As I wr ie his, al l I have o show or being he new Wavelengh edioris his one senence.

And i couldn' eel more like home. Abou en years ago or so I was a fedgling paddler on a press ouro Discovery Island couresy he now-deunc Oak Bay Beach Hoel.

Alan Wil son, hen-owner o Wavelengh Magazi ne, happened o bealong or he ride as well. While being boaed in comor in a yach ona paricularly windy day across Plumper Passage, I remember chating wih A lan briefy abou he amazingly ligh carbon bre paddle he hadalong or he rip. I seem o recall el ling him abou how I was planning on buying my rs kayak inhe nex ew weeks.

Who would have hough, a decade laer, here I'd be, inheriing A lan's legacy. And wha anincredible decade i has been, all han ks o kayaking.

Wavelengh couldn' be a beter place o end up. My rs sroke o luck was being ranserredo Vancouver Island in 1993. I ound mysel in he mids o his oudoor recreaion heaven, sonaurally hik ing, hen kayaking , became my passion. In 2003 I ook a chance by aking hesummer o work o paddle he ouer coas o Vancouver Island. Eighy-six days o paddling and alo o research and wriing laer, I had a publisher or Te Wild Coas, a guidebook or he wes coaso Vancouver Island . Whiecap Books quickly asked i I'd like o ex plore he coas some more orsome ollow-up volumes. Who could reuse? So in subsequen years volumes 2 and 3 o  Te WildCoas series were born. Ten a series o coasal alases.

Wih one more proessional dream le o ull l, a bi earlier his year I launched my owncreaion, Wild Coas Magazine (you can read i a www.wildcoasmagazine.com; asue readersmay noice some Wild Coas rais creeping ino Wavelengh, or which I oer no apologies. Ihink he wo magazines creae a grea amily). Around he ime he rs Wild Coas Magazinecame ou I began an email exchange wih on and Diana Mumord, he nex owners o

Wavelengh Magazine aer A lan reired. A ew more emails and a cup o coee laer we had a deal,

and so here I am. K nowing wha I know now abou magazines, I mus hank Ala n, on and Dianaor all he hard work in geting Wavelengh where i is oday. So i's wih a bi o repidaion and alo o exciemen I'm puting my own humbprin on Wavelengh. Firs is he change o agenda orhis issue, rom warm-weaher paddling o general ineres. (Sorry, I had oo many oher sories oell his issue. Wach or hose aricles soon.)

Some new hings o wach or: more advenures; regular aricles on ecology and conservaion(wo subjecs close o my hear); a new Day rip eaure aking a pracical approach on whereo paddle (o evenually creae a apesry o rips across he coninen); a look a amazing people(saring wih Jon Bowermaser); a Healh and Nuriion column (welcome Bruce!), and a new eaure called Opions, which looks one sep beyond he regular kayaking milieu o ouriggers, sails, wh iewaer, pedals or wherever else invenive minds a ke sel-propelled waerspors.

O course, he many alened regular conribuors o he magazine will remain Wavelengh's

backbone. Wach or somehing or jus abou any ineres – rom new gear o kayak shing. So welcome o he laes incarnaion o Wavelengh Magazine. I have a eeling i's going o be

my bes kayaking rip ye.

a look at how thepeninsula is evolving

increasing numbers o

tourists.

(The numbers match the

were taken. )

In June and July

1999 Bowermasterwas part o a three-

Russia and Alaska

on the Aleutians to

a an area o active

volcanoes the Aleuts

called 'the birthplace

o the winds.' Two

21-oot kayaks carried

everything the our

needed or ve weeks.

The search or water in one o

the driest places on earth in

South America meant days o

pulling kayaks rather than paddling,

including across southern Bolivia's

Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest

salt lake, once the ocean oor and

later an inland lake.

Learning o read char s is one o hose simple ye oddly engrossingskills anyone can pick up in an hour or so. Writen, mainained andprined or disribued via a variey online and prin sources by he U.S.Hydrographic Service and he Naional Ocean Service, chars are a wonderul rip planning resource.

eading hem as is much ar as skill . Wih a litle pracice, you canuse a char o creae richly-deailed rip plans ha exend o being ableanicipae where shorelines will be landable, where waves are likely o bepowerul and idal cur rens swi, and where o ake cover in a sorm.

Here, hen, is a brie guide o some o he more useul char symbols:hose ha mark major lighs and la ndmarks, boa or shipping channels, and wha kinds o coasl ine, rom sand o clis o boulders, you canexpec o come across anywhere you paddle.

Te inormaion is or NOAA chars . For Canadian chars use Char1, Symbols Abbreviaions erms. Te principles are generally he same.

Te inormaion below is rom NOAA Char No. 1. Te in ormaionin bold ype and brackes corresponds o he secion heading on heNOAA download page, i you wish o dow nload jus ha porion.

The ABCs of reading charts

NOAA Chart No. 1 detail. It's the end o an era. NOAA no longer prints Chart No. 1 in

book orm. It’s now available only online as a

pd fle. Download it at http://nauticalcharts.

noaa.gov/mcd/chart1/chart1hr.htm.

Nature of the shoreline symbols, page

14 (natural features section). Note the

extent to which charts represent the kinds

o shore (and thus the types o landing

challenges and camping challenges we can

expect) anywhere along the coastline o

North America. The symbols above also are

useul or helping you fgure out where you

are. I you see dunes, hills or a boulder-strewn

shoreline on the nearshore horizon, look or

that shoreline on your chart to fgure out

where you are – or where you are not!

Shoreline contour detail, page 15

(natural features). Charts also give the

contour and spot heights o the shore. Using

these symbols and phrases, your chart willdescribe prominent visible shoreline eatures

like ridges, mountaintops, clis, etc., and the

spot height o visible stands o trees or orest.

They’re doubly useul to such advanced

navigation skills as such triangulation,

creating ranges to compensate or tidal set

and drit, and drawing LOPs (lines o position)

i you keep a log to mark your location over

time.

Light symbol detail, page 61 (lights).

O particular interest to ocean kayakers are

major and minor lights, whether onshore or

o, all marked with the lavender exclamation

point above. Lavender exclamation point

symbols or a major light are always ollowed

by a code that spell out the light’s color

(white unless otherwise remarked), how

oten the light ashes, in what kind o

pattern, and the light’s height and range.

The simple alphanumeric codes are easy todecipher, as you’ll see in the next example:

Light period, elevation, range, page 64

(lights section). These codes that ollow

the lavender exclamation point are or major

lights only. They describe the light’s period

(how oten the light ashes) its height above

mean high water level in either eet or

meters, and fnally the light’s range, or rom

how ar away it is visible at night.

Light color codes, page 63 (lights). A

major light code will also include the light’s

color. The code isn’t tricky. W means white,

R equals red, and so on. Fortunately, most

lighthouses throw a white light, which makes

them easy to distinguish rom other ashing

navigation lights in the area. Other than

white, green and red are the most commonlight colors you’ll see at night. Both colors

may be visible at the same time at night,

when two buoys close to each other mark a

channel. Other times you’ll see red or green

only, otentimes at the edge o a channel

or to mark the preerred route around a

headland or other hazard.

Flash light types descriptors, page 62

(lights). Lights are also distinguished, and

coded, according to their ash pattern. To

get a grip on those various ash patterns,

scan the table columns above rom let to

right. The two let-most columns give the

coded abbreviation or the ash patterns to

look or. The third, middle column gives the

light’s description with a variety o technical

terms. Finally the right-hand column shows,

graphically, what those dierent ashes

actually look like at night. Being able to

distinguish one type o light rom another isespecially helpul at night.

A complete lighthouse code, page 64

(lights). Putting all those elements together

is not all that di cult; indeed, here’s what

a ull coded lighthouse description looks

like. First note the distinctive lavender

exclamation point, then the code:

FL (3) WRG 15S 21FT 11M

In the example above, the light in question

ashes white, red or green three times every

15 seconds (FL (3) WRG 15s). The light is 21

eet tall (21 FT) and is visible at a range o

eleven miles (11M), not including its looming.

To fgure out the period and pattern o a

light you see on the horizon, a simple count

will do. Count the number o ashes, then

count one one-thousand, two one-thousand

to time it. Instantly you are much more aware

o where you are than you were a moment

ago.

Bells and Buoys detail, page 75 (Buoys,

Beacons section). Here are the symbols

and words used to describe bells, gongs

and whistles buoys you’ll come across both

inshore and o. Each type is wave activated:

as they move up and down in swell or

waves their bellows or clangors create a

distinct, some would say reassuring sound.

The symbols in the two lowest rows shown

above (the starboard and port buoys R “2”

and “1”) are used to mark, respectively, the

numbered red nuns and green cans you’ll

see on water. I a nun or can makes a sound

or is lit, its code will say so. (The pictured

black can doesn’t exist anymore.) Red nuns

and green cans mark the channels we as

kayakers should stay out o, should crossin tight, easy-to-detect groups, or cross in

limited visibil ity a ter making a tra c control

security call. Keep in mind the mnemonic

or boat channels: red right return, which

means that boats returning to harbor will

leave red nuns to the right (starboard), green

cans to port (let). Remember too that wave-

activated bells, gongs and whistles, mark

either hazards or channels. Their clangs and

hoots can be reassuring to hear at night and

in og.

Depth contour line detail: Depths are also

o great interest to sea kayakers, especially i a

shallows abuts great depths and the wind or

sea are up. I the sea or wind are up, shallows

adjacent to depths will be lively with swell,

breaking waves and whitewater, surge or

overspill. Depending on your skills and

interests, those kinds o conditions will be

either un or nightmarish.
