o garbagebagwithedgescutsoitisonelargerectangleandafewstudents’shoesand/orbackpacks,or
o apieceofpaperperstudentandamarker• Spraybottle(s)withwater• Pipecleaners–sometheoriginallength,somecutinhalf,somecutquarterlength
MethodforwatershedactivityYoucandothisasonelargegroupwithaplasticbagandspraybottleofwaterorhaveeachstudentcreatetheirownwatershed(morefunforeveryone).Ifyou’redoingthisasalargegroup,layoutalargeplasticbagwhoseedgeshavebeencutsoitisnowonewide,longsheetofplastic.Havekidscreatealandscapeunderitusingtheirshoesandbackpacks.Makeitrainonthelandscapeusingaspraywaterbottle.Foreachstudenttocreatetheirownwatershed,haveeachstudentcrumplesuptheirsheetofpaper(nottoomuch!)andthenun-crumpleit.Onceyoursheetofpaperisopen,marktheridgesofyourpaperortopsofthemountainsofyourwatershedwithamarker.Thenseewhathappenswhenyouspraywateronthelandscape(again,nottoomuch!).

DiscussionSeewhathappenstothewater–wheredoesitgo?Wherearethehighpoints(mountainsandridges)andwherearethelowpoints(valleys,riversandlakes)?Canyoumapoutthewatershedofoneofoneriverorlake?Methodforactivitywithpipecleaners Haveeachstudentorsmallgroupsofstudents(2or3maximum)maketheirownfractaldesignwithpipecleanersthatwouldmaximizetheareacoveredbypipecleanersonyourdesk.Eachstudentgetsfourwholepipecleaners,eighthalf-sizedpipecleanersand16quarter-sizedpipecleaners.Afterwards,theclasswilljudgewhoorwhatteamcreatedthebestdesign.Usethedesignsintheworksheettohelpyoucreateyourdesign.
