Water Safety Plans

Training Workshop 25-27 June 2013

“The most effective way of consistently ensuring the safety of a drinking water supply is through the use

of a comprehensive risk assessment and risk management approach that encompasses all steps

in the water supply from catchment to consumer.” WHO Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality, 2004.

Why this course?

Since 2004, a number of documents have been published by WHO and the IWA, promoting the philosophy of Water Safety Plans (WSPs). These culminated in the publication of a WSP manual (2009). The accompanying training course (2012) was written by Cranfield University, working with WHO and IWA.

WSPs are a risk based approach to better protecting the quality of public drinking water. They have now been adopted worldwide; in the smallest community managed systems to the largest utilities. In several countries, including the UK, WSPs are now legally required and yet there are still aspects of the WSPs that are not fully understood by all stakeholders. Therefore face-to-face training is considered an essential component of successful WSP implementation.

Cranfield’s Water Sciences Institute offers this three day training course on Water Safety Plans. Cranfield developed this course with World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Water Association (IWA).

10% of the total global burden of disease could be prevented through better management of water, sanitation and hygiene risk factors. The significance of WSPs is not only in developing nations, but in developed nations where preventable ‘accidents’ still lead to deaths, when people have consumed unsafe water.

What will I learn?

You will benefit from Cranfield’s wealth of expertise in water quality risk management and WSP implementation. Cranfield Water Science Institute staff have worked closely with the IWA on the WSP implementation agenda, delivering toolboxes and training packages for water utility professionals internationally, including UK water utilities.

Bringing together aspects of water quality risk analysis, risk management and risk governance, this training workshop will prepare participants to develop and manage a Water Safety Plan. Training is highly interactive; with case studies, exercises and presentations running throughout the three days.
