Watch Journals outstanding success of the past few years is attributable to more than just the quality of the publicationthe

product of a top-notch design team and an editorial staff with deep and wide knowledge of the watch industryit has to do withdistribution altitude. Thats right, Watch Journalreaders enjoy these pages at higher altitudes than any other watch magazine,

bar none. And thats no accident. We know that many of the watches we cover are not within the reach of the average consumer.

So, weve gone to great lengthsand heightsto put WJin the hands of

    ultra-high-net-worth individuals.

And who are they? When wealth is defined as liquid assetsthat

is, cash available for investingthose with liquid assets of between

$100,000 and $1 million are often classified as sub-high-net-worth

individuals. These are the affluent people that many magazines claim

as readers. High-net-worth individuals are defined as those with invest-

able assets of $1 million to $5 million. We believe that most readers of

watch magazines fall into these two categories. They can well afford a

great Rolex, for example, and they are fairly elite compared to the aver-

    age American consumer.

Moving up the scale, those with liquid assets of $5 million to $30 mil-

lion fall into the category of very-high-net-worth individuals. No doubt

there are some VHNWIs reading this magazine, and some of them may

pick it up at newsstands where other watch magazines can be found.

But the wealthiest people in the world are those with liquid assets in

excess of $30 million. These ultra-high-net-worth individuals are not

your typical newsstand shoppers, and I dont know how many sub-

scribe to watch magazines, but there is one surefire way to reach them.

When these high flyers travel, they zip around in private jets, which

offer both privacy and convenience. This is why Watch Journals most

focused and most important distribution is to private jet travelers. They

are among the wealthiest people on the planet, and many of them love

watches as much as our newsstand buyers and subscribers. No doubt

these readers can afford just about any watch we write about. So, Watch

Journalis distributed through exclusive company-owned magazine racks in 200 of the top private jet airport lobbies across

America. How many copies of Watch Time, IWor Revolutionare distributed in the same private jet airports? Zero.

Regardless of which category of affluence you fall into, we sincerely hope that you enjoy this issue, whether on the

    ground or in the air!

Were always rushing. Always in a hurry. Always wanting to get from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible. When we

reach the end of our lives, are we going to wonder if we could have squeezed in one more meeting? I dont think so. Wehave to remind ourselves to take the time to appreciate our lives and to spend time with family and friends, cherishing

that time and realizing how precious it really is.

I have three sonstwo are grown, and the

other, Jake, has just turned five years old.

With the way time rushes by, it seems like

only a few years ago when Kalen and Evan

were Jakes age (they are now 30 and 28), and

it seems like only yesterday that Jake was

born. You would think that the way my first

two boys childhoods seemed to fly by,

I would have learned by now to cherish

every moment of Jakes early years. Im try-

ing as hard as I can, but Im as busy as ever if

not more so. And slowing down is alwaysa challenge.

This is why Im thankful to have a watch

that can remind me of how valuable time is.

When I look at the face of one of my favorite

watches, I am reminded of the person who

gave me the watch or on what occasion I

purchased the watch, and it makes me stop and

think a bit about the passage of time. In a way,

    these reminiscences, these contemplations, suc-

ceed in stopping time, if only for a moment.

So, next time you are hurrying from home to

work, or from school to home or to the mall and back, take the time to look out the window, smile at someone on the

street or momentarily appreciate a beautiful view as you rush past it. As individuals, we are only on this earth for a

relatively short time, and, if we allow them to, our watches can help us to enjoy every minute!

    SPECIAL PROJECTS

    Ball Watch has announced the

release of a new limited edition

    Engineer Hydrocarbon watch

that is both a tribute to one of

    its champions and a charitable

    project benefiting his family.

    The Engineer Hydrocarbon

    Spacemaster Captain

    Poindexter ($3,699) commemo-

rates the life of naval officer

    and NASA astronaut Alan G.

    Poindexter, who wore a similar

Ball watch into space in 2010 as

    captain of the shuttle Discovery

and died in a tragic accident

in 2012. A portion of proceeds

from sales of the new watch

will be donated to the Samuel

    Pfeiffer Poindexter Special

    Needs Trust, established to

    fund care for Poindexters

    younger son, who suffers from

    severe autism. The automatic

    watch is a certified chronom-

    eter incorporating technologies

    that provide shock resistance,

    water resistance and magne-

    tism resistance.

    TRIPLE THREAT

    Watches by Swiss maker Milus

    are once again available in

the US as a result of a recently

    established partnership

    between Milus International SA

    and American watch distributor

Totally Worth It. Milus is per-

    TriRetrograde watches with

    triple retrograde seconds dis-

plays. The maker has plans to

    introduce new materials into

its line in the near future. Milus

    CEO Cyril Dubois comments,

We are excited to cooperatewith Totally Worth It, whose

    CEO, Alexis Sarkissian, is more

than a business partner; he is a

friend, a compatriot and, like us,

    was bitten by the watchmaking

    bug early in his career.

APPROVED FOR USELuminox has announced its

    toughest piece of timekeeping

gear yet. The new ANU series

    is inspired by the demand-

ing criteria of World War II

    maritime commandos, who

    used only equipment that met

    the ANU (authorized for Navy

    use) standard for reliability.

    Designed for both durabil-

    ity and reliability, Luminoxs

first ANU watch, the 4200, is a

    45-mm time-and-date model in

    PVD-coated steel with crownprotection, a 200-meter water-

    resistance rating, a Ronda

    Swiss quartz movement, micro

gas light tubes on the hands

    SHARED PASSION

    Linde Werdelin announced an

    official partnership with profes-

sional skier Jon Olsson last fall.

    The supercar lover and Gumball

    3000 regular owns Linde

    Werdelins SpidoLite II Tech

    Gold ($19,300), the brands first

    timepiece made of forged car-

bon and its special Alloy Linde

    Werdelin (ALW). The strong

and lightweight case is ideal for

    Olsson who designed his own

    carbon-bodied Rebellion R2K

car. An 18-karat rose gold bezel

and crown add the warm gleam

of precious metal. Its yet to be

    revealed what Olsson and Linde

    Werdelin may do together, but,

according to the brand, it is

likely to have something to do

    with their shared passion for

    outstanding performance.

    Stay tuned.

    AUSTRALIA BOUND

    The watches of UKbased

    watch brand Bremont were

    first introduced to Australians

on the wrists of television per-

    sonalities, such as Bear Grylls

    (Discoverys Man vs Wild).

    Now the country that shares

    Bremonts penchant for adven-

    newest retail market, since

    Bremont opened its first retail

    account with Sydneys Gregory

    Jewellers on October 1. Bremont

    co-founder Giles English says, I

think the classical style and rug-

    ged design of our mechanical

    watches have a strong appeal

    for the Australian man. When

we enter new markets, it is criti-

cal for us that we find the right

partners to work with. I strongly

believe we have done this, and

we are pleased to be launching

    This programmable rotating

IN FOCUSBEST OF BOTH WORLDS | DIOR ON THE OUTSIDE, ZENITH ON THE INSIDE

    The decade-long collabora-

    tion began when Dior Time-

    pieces launched the Chiffre

    Rouge I01 mens watch,

    equipped with a Zenith

    automatic chronographmovement, dubbed the

    Irrductible movement, a name

    that connotes an unchanging

    quality. Ever since, Dior and

    the Le Loclebased Zenith

    manufacture have continued to

    expand their partnership with

    numerous watches using two

    distinctive movements. Select

    Dior Chiffre Rouge mens

    watches continue to use both

    the Irrductible chronograph

    movement and Zeniths famous

    thin and reliable Elite

    movements, and numerous

    womens watches have been

    created using variants of

    Zeniths Elite movement.

    I R R D U C T I B L EQ U A L I T I E SZeniths Irrductible Caliber

    400 is a COSC-certified auto-

    matic chronograph movement,

    developed by Zenith especially

    for Dior. The complex caliber

    comprises 278 individual com-

    ponents and measures time

    to one-tenth of a second,

    thanks to the balance wheels

    oscillation frequency of 36,000

    vibrations per hour. In this

sense, it is not unlike Zeniths

    famous El Primero, the first

    automatic chronograph move-

    ment, which was a revelation

when it was introduced in 1969

and still stands apart as the

    most precise series-produced

    automatic chronograph in

the world. The IrrductibleCaliber 400 is currently found

    in the limited edition Chiffre

    Rouge I02 and I03 timepieces,

both of which use hands and

    markers that meet extremely

    stringent tolerances and

    complement the precision of

    the Irrductibles indications.

    E L I T E S T Y L EThe Elite family of move-

ments by Zenith is thin, reli-

    able and precise. Zeniths first

    Elite movement was launched

    in 1994, following three years

    in development, and was the

    first Zenith movement to be

    developed using computer-

    assisted design technology.

    Todays Elite movements range

between 2.84 and 3.46 mm thin

and power a wide range of

    beautiful watches. Watches

in Diors La D de Dior Col-

    lection use manual-winding

Elite Caliber 631 or Caliber 655

    movements. Dior Grand Soir

    watches use automatic Elite

    Caliber 671 or 681 movements.

    And the limited edition

    Chiffre Rouge C03 mens

    watch contains an automatic-

    winding Elite Caliber 691 with

    big date, moon phases and

    small seconds.

The latter is an exampleof an extraordinary level of

    collaboration between the two

    houses. More than five years

    of research and development

    were devoted to refinements

    aimed at perfecting this move-

    ment for the Chiffre Rouge.

And many of its aesthetic ele-

    mentsincluding the appear-

ance of its moon phase and

    big date displayshave been

    customized by Dior designers

    to ensure that they perfectly

    reflect the established codes

    of Dior Homme. For example,

    the oscillating weight that

    winds the movement and is

    visible through the exhibition

    caseback has been finished

with black lacquer, just like the

    watchs dial.

    Those looking for timepieces

    with both a refined fashion

    sense and world-class mechani-

    cal movements will be hard

    pressed to find anything that

    surpasses the watches pro-

    duced by Dior in collaboration

with Zenith. Its truly a best-of-

    both-worlds arrangement.

    dior.com

    Diors stature as a globally-renowned

design house is well known even to those who dont necessarily follow the fashion

world. And Zenith is known the world over for nearly a century and a half of manu-

facturing innovative watch mechanisms of superlative quality. What many may not

know is that the two entities have been collaborating to produce incredible watches

for both men and women since 2004.

the F40, the F50 and the Enzo.Simply dubbed LaFerrari, and

    limited to 499 examples, the

    race-developed model features

    the ultimate in aerodynamic

    styling and a Formula Oneprov-

    en hybrid powerplant good for

    950 horsepower and 664 pound-

    feet of torque, shocking perfor-

mance metrics by any standard. At

Basel a month later, Hublot unveiled

its companion piece to LaFerrari in

    its Masterpiece series. The MP-05

    LaFerrari is a manual-winding tourbil-

lon with an unprecedented 50-daypower reserve. Designed and developed

completely in-house by Hublot, the watch

is limited to just 50 pieces, retailing for

    $345,000 each. With 11 series-coupled

spring barrels stacked front and center, the

unorthodox design is closer to a concept

timepiece than a standard wristwatch, but,

as Biver explains, MP-05 had to look like a

Ferrari V-12 engine. That was the task, and

that has been 100 percent achieved! For prospective customers looking to

spend a bit less on a Ferrari watch, Hublot

added three new pieces to the Big Bang

series: the Ferrari All Black ($29,800), the

Ferrari Carbon Red Magic ($32,100), and

the Ferrari King Gold Carbon ($43,600).

While the first two pieces are limited to a

series of 1,000 examples each, the last is an

    edition of just 500 units.

Sponsoring 80 Ferrari events this year,

including Formula One grand prix entries,

Ferrari Days customer races, marque club

gatherings and various auto salons and

concours delegance, Hublot has seem-ingly reached a level of commitment to

    Maranello that eclipses the automakers

arrangements with its recent spate of

partners. One can only hope the current

    partnership continues to bear positive

fruit, because the worlds greatest sports

car company inarguably deserves a timing

    partner worthy of the task.

    S T O R I E D P A S T

It all began in April 1891 when two trains in Ohio col-

lided head-on and it was determined that the cause of

the accident was the inaccuracy of the watch used by

one of the engineers. Seeking to avert future losses,

the countrys largest railroad companies appointed

Cleveland jeweler Webster C. Ball as chief time inspec-

tor for the federal railway system. In addition to estab-

lishing regular testing of the watches used by railroad

employees, Ball instituted a time standardization sys-

tem. The watches he certified bore a BALLs Standard

logo. Todays respected COSC chronometer standards

are based in part on Balls timing tests. Along the way,

he founded the Ball Watch Company to manufacture

watches to his own certification standards, and as a re-

sult, reliability, precision and innovation became hall-

    marks of Ball watches.

Todays Ball Watch Company is committed to con-

tinuing in the tradition of its famous founder. Ball has

always been an innovator, and we will continue to strive

to live up to the innovative dreams and the path that

Webb C. Ball created in the late 1800s, says Jeffrey

alvatore Ferragamo is a household name in fashion, but the

company is relatively new to watches. It began producing

timepieces in a licensing arrangement with Timex Group Luxury

Watches a little more than six years ago and debuted its first watches at Baselworld in

spring 2008. Today, US distribution of Ferragamo Timepieces is handled by the Gevril

Group, and the brands US president is Paul Ziff, a figure who brings the credibility of

a career spent in the watch industry to the new venture.

In the fashion world, Ferragamo is known for its signature Italian style; however, the

company was actually started in California in 1923, when migr and brand namesake

Salvatore Ferragamo bought the Hollywood Boot Shop and started to make shoes for

Hollywood film stars. Phenomenal success followed, and, today, the company has more

than 500 mono-brand boutiques around the world.
