Achieves Tier 4 Interim certification with SCR Emission

Control Technology LAS VEGAS — Case Construction

Equipment introduced the new 621Fwheel loader model at the World of Con-crete 2012 show. The new machine pro-vides up to a 10 percent increase in fueleconomy over the previous model, whiledelivering faster acceleration, quickercycle times and higher travel speeds.

The new Case 621F wheel loader, likeother models in the product line, evolved from the company’s E Seriesmachines. To meet Tier 4 Interim emis-sions standards, the Case F Serieswheel loaders use selective catalytic re-duction (SCR) technology, which resultsin lower temperatures in the exhaustsystem while optimizing combustion.

“Case wheel loaders already led theindustry in fuel economy, but the ad-

dition of SCR technology in our CaseF Series wheel loaders expands thatleadership position,” said TimO’Brien, brand marketing manager,Case Construction Equipment. “Atthe same time, we’ve added morepower and responsiveness to providecontractors with the combination ofperformance and economy they needto compete successfully.”

The Case 621F wheel loader featuresa 6.7 liter Tier 4 Interim certified en-gine that delivers up to 162 hp. Classi-fied as a 2.75-cubic-yard wheel loader,

the Case 621F has an operating weightof 26,641-pounds.

“The Case 621F wheel loader deliversthe best fuel economy and perform-ance in its class size,” O’Brien said.“Like other F Series models, the 621Foffers four programmable power modesto save fuel and increase availablepower. These easy to program powermodes — Economy, Standard, Maxand Auto — give operators flexibility inmatching engine power to their jobs.”

which include green-house gas verification, environmental footprint-ing and environmentalmanagement systemsregistrations.

NSF earned accredita-tion in 2010 to providethe testing portion of theBPI program. Now as thenew administrator, NSFSustainability will pro-vide all aspects of the cer-tification process from

the initial application, product reviews, testingand verifying complianceto the BPI program re-quirements. Actual li-censing for use of theCompostable Logo will re-main BPI’s responsibility.

The BPI developed theCertified Compostableprogram for plastics toapply science based testmethods developed bythe American Society of

Testing and Materials(ASTM) to verify a materi-al will compost in a mu-nicipal or commercial fa-cility, leaving no toxic orlingering plastic. Producttesting mimics whattakes place in a typicalmunicipal or commercialcomposting system. Topass these ASTM tests, aproduct must:

• Disintegrate quicklyleaving no visible

residue that has to bescreened out;

• Biodegrade fully orconvert rapidly to car-bon dioxide, water andbiomass;

• Result in compostthat can support plantgrowth; and

• Not introduce highlevels of regulated metalsinto the soil

Certified com-postable items range

from compostable bagsand foodservice itemsto packaging materials, widely distributed con-sumer products andeven wax and shellaccoatings. The BPI Com-postable Logo identifiesproducts that havebeen independentlytested and verified tobiodegrade and com-post quickly, safelyand completely in mu-nicipal and commercialcomposting operations.

“The BPI CompostableLogo is widely recognizedby consumers, com-posters and municipalofficials throughoutNorth America as thepreferred trademark toassure compostability incommercial facilities,”said Steven A. Mojo, BPIexecutive director. “Asmore consumer goodscompanies recognize theimportance and value ofcomposting, and the im-portance of responsiblemarketing claims aboutbiodegradability andcompostability, we antic-ipate even more growthin the years ahead. Thisnew partnership withNSF will create a strongfoundation to supportthis anticipated growth.”

“NSF’s expertise andrecognition in both prod-uct certification and sus-tainability will increasethe credibility of theBPI’s effort,” said TomBruursema, NSF Inter-national Sustainabilitygeneral manager. “NSFSustainability’s partici-pation will help to ex-pand the Certified Com-postable program andprovide consumers, in-stitutional, commercialand government pur-chasers even more ac-cess to compostableplastic products.”

The BPI awarded thefirst “Compostable Logo”in 2002 in an effort todistinguish compostableplastic applications fromones made of traditionalnon-degradable plastics.Since then, more than230 products made bymore than 130 globalcompanies have earnedBPI certification.

Municipal yard waste recycling centers have comea long way in the past twenty years or so. Oneexample of that is the Virginia Peninsulas PublicService Authority (VPPSA) Compost Facility inYorktown, VA. With more than 20 acres of asphaltpaved space available for receiving leaves and yardwaste, it is an asset in which the communities ofHampton, Poquoson and York County can take greatpride. The facility has successfully developed andgrown over the years demonstrating that theircomposting facility is extraordinary.

VPPSA is a ten city and county solid waste author-ity,” said Donald “Donnie” Bonivich, the CompostFacility supervisor for VPPSA, after he dismountedfrom the facility’s Komptech Topturn X-60 CompostTurner following the turning of one of the facility’s 12windrows. Members include the Cities of Hampton,

Poquoson, Williamsburg and the Counties of Essex,James City, King and Queen, King William, Mathews,Middlesex and York. The Towns of Tappahannock,Urbanna and West Point are also included.”

The facility receives material from residents, communities and businesses, and includes leaves, grass and brush. Brush can be up to 10-feet in lengthand up to 24-inches in diameter. This past year, thearea experienced considerable storm damage fromHurricane Irene, which prompted VPPSA to keep thefacility open for an extended period of time to helpmake storm clean up go more smoothly. “We weretaking in storm debris seven days per week for sixweeks,” he said. “There was a lot going on from thefirst of September until mid-October.”

Bagged materialDonnie said that he gets exceptional support from

Stephen Geissler, executive director of VPPSA, andDavid Magnant, the director of Operations, when itcomes to overseeing changes and improvements atthe facility. They are the first to recognize the need forconstant improvements and the importance of work-ing together as a team to keep the facility in first classcondition.

Recently the facility began accepting bagged leavesfrom several of the communities. Bagged leaves willbe accepted from any member community as long asthey are in the approved plastic bags. (Clear, no drawstrings and are 0.7 millimeters or less in thickness)There has been an excellent response to this newprogram, and staff has been experimenting with waysto debag the leaves in increasingly successful ways.”

Bonivich said that Mid-Atlantic Waste Systems thecompany from whom VPPSA purchased theKomptech Topturn also assisted them in modifyingan existing piece of equipment to debag the leaves.“We are in our second year of doing this,” he said.“Cutting knives were installed in an older Komptech(Mustang) trommel, and it has been working reason-ably well. We can process 200 to 300-yards of baggedleaves per hour.”

material is initially ground using a tub grinder andthen stockpiled so it can cure for a minimum of threemonths. During the curing process temperatures inthe stockpiled mulch can reach 180 degrees. Thisprocess kills off any larva and weed seed that mayhave been in the material when it arrived, alsoensures that the material will be safe to place arounda customer’s property. The stock piled mulch goesthrough the tub grinder once more and is thenscreened into mulch fines and reground mulchproducts.

The compost facility accepts leaves and grasswhich is used for making compost. The material isground in the tub grinder and placed into windrowsthat are several hundred yards long, 20-feet wide andabout seven-feet tall. The windrows are monitoredover the next six months to ensure consistency.

Donnie said that the facility’s Komptech Topturn X-60 self-propelled compost turner really comes inhandy for keeping the material aerated and process-ing properly. “With each windrow containing 1500-yards of material, there is quite a bit of compost that

needs to be turned on a regular basis,” he said. “Mostof the compost that goes out has been processing atleast eight months. We measure the internal temper-atures of the windrows and turn them regularly.”

When the composting process is complete and thematerial is ready for sale, they process it through aMcCloskey 733 trommel before it is sold tocustomers.

The compost facility offers four products for sale:reground mulch, mulch fines, compost and a soilblend. This can be a busy place.

The facility hopes to offer colored mulch in the nottoo distant future. This product was offered severalyears ago, but with the economy people were leaningtoward the lower prices offered on regular mulch. There seems to be the interest now to offer it again.VPPSA is a member of the U.S. Composting and thenewly formed Virginia Composting Council. For moreinformation about the VPPSA compost facility contactthem at 757-898-5012 or for information about all ofthe VPPSA programs visit them on line atwww.vppsa.org.

The X-Series windrow turners from Komptech arethe only turners on the market with optionalscraper bar mounted behind the drum. This patent-ed device allows the turner to pick up all of thewindrow, even the very bottom three to four incheswhich other turners leave behind. It’s in these threeto four-inches where huge odor problems start forcomposters. Because this layer never gets turned, itgoes anaerobic and begins to smell. When thewindrow is turned the bottom, smelly layer isexposed and odors are allowed to escape.

The removable scraper bar rides on the groundsurface and picks up this layer preventing any partof the windrow from going anaerobic and thuspreventing nasty odors.

Mid Atlantic Waste Systems has been working withVPPSA to develop a trommel application that will shredthe plastic bags that are used to haul yard waste to thecomposting center. A closer look at the interior of thetrommel (inset), reveals knives around the drum.

A loader operator moves bagged yard waste onto the composting facility's stockpile of material.Donnie Bonovich nears the end of this windrow ofmaterial in the Komptech Topturn X-60 windrow turner.

by Dave Whitelaw - TheGrinder Guy

One of the best ways toget rid of sorted woodand general residue froma C&D recycling line is togrind it to fuel size andship it to some sort ofCo-fired Plant or Kiln af-ter removing the un-burnables, dirt, brick, block, concrete andsteel. Also, it is impor-tant to remove the hardPVC plastic and circuitboards. Once that itdone, a producer can de-termine the size of the

fuel he intends to mar-ket. That can differ fromplant to plant and stateto state.

Generally, wood firedplants can handle a 6-inch minus product. There are some kilnsthat use a 3-inch con-veyable material andmany others that use a1-inch blowable materialto mix with their coal.

Typically, BTU values ofthe C&D residue are of-ten 5,000 to 10,000BTUs, depending on thematerials being recycledin the systems. By com-parison coal is 12,500BTUs or thereabout.

In many of these recy-cling facilities, there isone costly piece of equip-ment that I find continu-ally, and that is some

sort of high speedgrinder at the end ofthese systems to grindthe wood waste into afinished product, usuallyinto a fine, shredded ma-terial. More importantly, these grinders are prob-ably the most costlyparts of the operations.

STOP! Why does thematerial need to beshredded so finely? The

only time you can makea case for a high speedgrinder is if you are ship-ping a 1-inch product.Even when your finishedproduct material is thissize, a grinder of thiskind has an infeed ratethat is so low, there is noneed for a unit of thiskind with a big diameterrotor and all its expen-sive parts and all that

wasted horsepower.A slow speed shredder

with a small screen sizecannot only make theproduct you want, butreduce your costs by us-ing less horsepower andlimiting the wear toabout one-fourth of whata high speed grinderwould offer. The hum of

that high speed rotorspinning, whether elec-tric or a diesel driven, iscosting you all your prof-it on the fuel product youare creating and proba-

bly everything else too.Another area of sav-

ings is to screen yourmaterial before grind-ing. Screens are cheapin comparison to

grinders. You reallyneed them to removethe dirt fines from yourproduct to reduce yourash content anyway. So if you have some

oversized material thatneeds to be removed, scalp it off too anddrop out those fineswhile you are at it.You’ll get more money

for the biomass fuelyou are making.

One model of screensto consider is a starscreen. Star screens gota tarnished reputationfrom some of the earlyyears in the industry, buttoday’s models are noth-ing like its predecessors. They create less dustthan trommels, theydon’t plug up like flatdecks, you can adjustthe sizing in seconds andyou can create the multi-ple products with thesame deck. By splittingthe deck, you can removethe dirt fines that don’tburn and screen the restof the product to a specif-ic size for your customer.

We recommend thatyou review your opera-tions. What if your grind-ing costs were reducedby over 50 percent andyou were paid more foryour fuel? Wouldn’t thatbe an improvement?

Need some help, give usa call. Got a question?Drop us a line. DaveWhitelaw 813-421-2757or e-mail [email protected].

Visit MPI booth No. 16201 to see what’s new

Highland, MI — Mag-netic Products, Inc.(MPI), a worldwideprovider of both magnet-ic and non-magnetic ma-terial handling solutions,will display a variety ofinventive products atWaste Expo in Las Vegas,from May 1-3, 2012.

Products to be fea-tured in booth No. 16201include:

Eddy CurrentSeparators

MPI’s proven eddy cur-rent technology ensureshigher separation rates.State of the art systemcontrols and featurescombined with techno-logical advances resultin improved nonferrousmetal removal, particu-larly when trying to sep-arate smaller particlessuch as aluminium andbrass from non-conduc-tive waste streams. Aswell as offering free in-house product testing foreddy current applica-tions, MPI also buildseddy current rotors forcustomers who seek toupgrade their existingeddy current system per-formance or OEMs whobrand their own materialrecycling facilities andsystem equipment.

Metal DetectorsMPI offers recyclers a

complete line of metaldetectors, including Cas-sel next generation metaldetectors which featureexclusive “Four Quad-rant” technology. Built towithstand the severe ap-plication demands of therecycling industry whileproviding superior per-formance, MPI metal de-tectors protect process-ing equipment fromdamage and keep un-wanted metals from con-taminating final product.

Cross Belt SeparatorMPI suspended perma-

nent magnet and electro-magnetic cross belt sep-arators allow effective re-moval of unwantedtramp iron from heavyburden depths of materi-al being conveyed on fastmoving conveyor belts. They are ideal for sepa-

rating tramp metal fromwet or dry, fine or coarseconveyed materials inlarge or small volumes.Safe and assured trampiron extraction fromproduct streams pro-tects processing machin-ery, prevents fire or ex-plosions caused bysparks, and improvesproduct quality.

Magnetic Belt FeederMPI magnetic belt

feeders (MBF) trap fer-rous materials thatwould otherwise contam-inate final products. Themagnetic belt feeder, en-gineered to provide max-imum elimination ofmetal contaminants, consists of a belted con-veyor with an integratedmagnetic head pulley. Asproduct reaches the endof the feeder’s conveyor,it passes through a mag-netic field. Ferroustramp metals adhere tothe belt and are carriedaround the pulley to-ward the return side ofthe conveyor. Gravitycauses clean, non-fer-rous materials to exitand fall away from theMBF system.

From the time that Richmond Virginia’s S.B. Cox,Inc. began doing business in 1963 as a demolitioncontractor and construction service provider, thecompany has strived for excellence in every aspect ofits operation. Today, the family owned company hasgrown to encompass seven divisions that include aRoll Off Division, a C&D Landfill, a Crane ServicesDivision, a Portable Toilet rental service as well as aRecycling Center Division, in addition its originaloperation as a demolition contractor.

The Recycling Center Division consists of a facilityin Richmond that opened in 2008, and a new opera-tion in Yorktown, VA. With this kind of enterprisinggrowth, it comes as no surprise that S.B. Cox wouldadd the new recycling center in an effort to increasetheir capacity to divert recyclable waste from the

company’s Taylor Road, C&D Landfill nearChesterfield, VA. More importantly, with the additionof this new recycling center, S.B. Cox has been ableto offer a much needed destination for C&D wastematerial that was not there previously. Without thisnew facility, much of the C&D waste material gener-ated in Virginia’s Tidewater Region, had no otheralternative than being taken to other landfills servingthe area where it was ultimately buried.

“This is the only facility of its kind on the peninsu-la,” said Wayne Roskop, Recycling Manager for thenew Yorktown facility. During our tour of the center,Roskop explained that the building of the complexwas a team effort from within the company. He saidthat S.B. Cox workers did the site prep work on the10.2 acre complex, and they put up the 150 by 250-

foot containment building as well. S. B. Cox crewsalso did the concrete work on the ramps for the truckscale that monitors incoming and outgoing loads. Helikened the teamwork to that of a family gettingtogether to build a new house for one of the familymembers.

Roskop noted that Continental Biomass Industries(CBI) was called in to design and build the materialsprocessing system. They chose CBI because of thesuccess that they had experienced at the RichmondRecycling Center. There, a CBI system has beenoperating reliably for the past several years.

When it was time to build the new recycling center,

As material comes off the incoming conveyor, a worker looks for cardboard to pull from the mix.

Ground wood waste is moved from the CBI grinder atthe far end of the system to the bin that is designatedfor wood waste materials.

CBI was a natural. He recalled that the new facilityhas been steadily increasing in volume since itopened on Sept. 7, 2011. The increased material flowmeans that they are accomplishing what we set outto do when the commitment was made to build thisfacility.

Eight products diverted from the landfillThe Yorktown plant is currently sorting out eight

different recyclable materials that now bypass thelandfill. For example, the cardboard, metal, plastic, copper and brass, are sold on the open market. Theconcrete is retained and crushed on site for sale tocontractors as a sub base material with the fine (1-5/8-inch minus) being used at S.B. Cox’s TaylorRoad Landfill as ADC.

Asphalt shingles sorted from the material streamare taken to a custom grinder who returns them to beused Asphalt mixes of other companies. The woodwaste is ground to create mulch products, boiler fuel, with a portion of the material going to a paper mill asbiofuel. “We are constantly looking at waste materialsthat are brought into our facilities, to see what elsewe can recycle,” he said.

“From the time our excavator operator places agrapple load of material into the input hopper untilthe remaining waste material goes off the far end ofthe conveyor, takes only three minutes,” he said.“That gives you an idea of how this equipment andour workers can sort out the incoming material.”

As material leaves the input hopper, it initiallycrosses a Taper Slot Screen where smaller material 1-5/8-inch or minus are removed and sent to a largestorage pit with an auger to keep material moving tothe front of the bunker. Larger wood waste is removedduring the picking process where it is dropped onto abelt beneath the work area. This takes the largerwood pieces back to the Grizzly where it is groundwith the other wood waste. During that process, woodwaste passes beneath one of two magnets where nailsand other metal debris is removed before goingthrough the grinder. The facility is open for inboundmaterial from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday throughFriday and Saturdays from 6:30 to noon. At the timeof this writing, the system was in operation eighthours per day, Monday through Friday.

Cardboard, plastics and vinyl siding is baledindividually, with an American Baler with the bun-dles heading to market when a truckload has accu-mulated. The baling takes place when a sufficientsupply of either material has filled their respectivestockpiles in one of the storage bins beneath the con-veyors. Cardboard bales routinely run about 1650-pounds while the plastic bales run approximately

1450-pounds each.Looking ahead

“S.B. Cox is a wonderful place to work,” Roskopsaid, reflecting on how long a number of the employ-ees had been working for the company. “I believe theaverage longevity of our workers is over 10 years. Weall work together to help get things done. We evenhave people working for the company for more than40 years.”

Roskop said that the current plant configurationallows for future growth with the potential for asecond production line sometime in the future. Hesaid that it might possibly include a trommel for siz-ing wood material as the markets for those productscontinues to grow. With the dedication that S.B. Coxhas to make certain that material does not end up ina landfill, the addition might come sooner rather thanlater! For more information about S.B. Cox Recycling, visit their website at www.sbcoxdemolition.com or e-mail Wayne at [email protected].

Wayne Roskop, recycling manager, operates the loader as he moves material into the stockpile that feeds the CBISorting System within Cox's Recycling Center.

An excavator outfitted with a contractor's grapple, places material into the CBI Sorting System's intake hopper.

Nails and other metal objects are pulled from the mate-rial stream by powerful magnets and dumped into oneof two containers.

The stair step design of the TAPER-SLOT Screen, givesit additional capabilities for removing selected materi-al from the material stream.

WEST FARGO, ND —The Doosan DX350LCexcavator is more thanjust interim Tier 4 (iT4)compliant. Improvementsspan from more enginehorsepower and torque toa turbocharger, upgradedcooling system and newhydraulic system.

The DX350LC is pow-ered by a 281 hp, sixcylinder DL08K watercooled diesel engine thathas been optimized foruse with cooled exhaustgas recirculation (CEGR)system, diesel oxidationcatalyst (DOC) and dieselparticulate filter (DPF).The engines in this con-figuration are optimizedto reduce nitrogen oxidesand after treatment isneeded to reduce partic-ulate matter, to complywith iT4 emission regu-lations. The tur-bocharged 466-cubic-inch engine features acommon rail design withdirect fuel injection, elec-tronic control and fourvalves per cylinder.

The high pressurecommon rail (HPCR) sys-tem increases the effi-ciency of fuel delivery byincreasing the pressureto 26,100 psi. The in-creased pressure allowsthe injector to inject afiner mist into the en-gine, which results in amore efficient combus-tion as required by thelower combustion cham-ber temperature due tothe CEGR system.

Cooling system up-grades include two vari-able speed hydraulicfans. This allows the en-gine and oil cooling sys-tems to be controlled in-dependently, improvingfuel efficiency and pro-vides a quieter operatorenvironment. The newcooling system on aver-age has a 10 -15 percentgreater cooling capacity.

PerformanceThe improvements in

engine horsepower andtorque, coupled with thesix percent increasedmaximum pressure fromthe main control valve, mean increases in vari-ous workgroup functions.

Swing torque in-creased by approximate-ly 8 to 11 percent, whichallows the excavator toswing uphill more easily,

as well as improve back-filling trenches. Thisleads to decreased timeper foot of trench, im-proving productivity.Digging force has in-creased approximatelyfive percent, which al-lows for more power inharsh digging condi-tions, leading to de-creased cycle times andimproved production intrenching applications.

Lifting capacity in-creased by approximate-ly two percent, providing

improved power out ofthe trench, allowing themachine to lift and placemore material with eachcycle. The boom-upspeed improved by ap-proximately six percent, which allows for morework to be completedfaster, increased cycletimes, improved truckloading time and morematerial moved per hour.

A variable geometryturbocharger (VGT) isutilized to increase boostpressure at lower engine

rpm. Controlled by theECU, the VGT varies theamount of boost sup-plied to the engine to op-timize combustion overthe entire rpm range. The VGT also allows theengine to generate agreater amount of torquein a wider band in therpm range, increasingengine performance atlower engine rpm. Thisimproves machine per-formance in the stan-dard and economy powermodes while saving fuel.

The new closed centermain control valve withelectro hydraulic pumpcontrol, exclusive to theDX350LC, allows theECU to maximize enginepower. This leads to anapproximately 20 percentincrease in efficiency ofthe main control valve, which leads to improvedfuel economy. Workgroupperformance increasedapproximately 10 percentcompared to the Tier 3DX350LC model.Smoother control and

more accurate placementof materials is a result ofthe operator’s ability tocontrol the machine withmore precise movement.

Additionally, the newboom float option allowsthe boom of the excava-tor to “float” up or down, allowing the operator tofocus more on the taskwhile decreasing themachine workload andincreasing efficiency. The float mode allows

the boom to move freely up and downwithout hydraulic flow. The breakermode allows the boom to freely movedown, only without hydraulic flow. Atemporary reset button allows theability to momentarily disengage thefloat, allowing hydraulic flow to acti-vate the boom.

ComfortDoosan continues to focus on opera-

tor comfort with further enhancementsto the roll-over protective structure(ROPS) cabin. Both a seat height leverand tilting function for the seat cushionwere added to the seat to allow the op-erator to find an optimum seating posi-tion. The cabin mounting mechanismhas been improved with a thickeneddampening plate and a coil spring hasbeen added to reduce cabin vibration20 percent, allowing operators to worklonger days with less fatigue.

The door window position slider nowlocks in various positions, preventingit from moving from its intended loca-tion. Both front and rear glass win-dows are also adjustable. The doorspace of the cab has increased by 1.8-inches, allowing the operator to get inand out more easily. The cabin sizehas increased 6.1 percent, providingmore headroom. The joystick angle hasbeen reduced from 25 degrees to 19degrees to provide a more ergonomicprofile and decrease interference with

operator’s legs.The DX350LC, like every Doosan

machine, is covered by an innovative48 hour parts guarantee. The programguarantees that if a “machine debilitat-ing” part is needed, Doosan will deliverthis part to the end user within two

The five Cat® K Seriesmedium wheel loaders —950K, 962K, 966K,972K, 980K — offer com-plete machine guardingpackages to help ensurereliable and durable op-eration in harsh indus-trial applications. To at-tain even greater reliabil-ity, Cat Flexport™ Tiresare available on four ofthe loader models.

Of course the loadersretain all of the produc-tivity, comfort and safetyenhancing attributes ofthe standard K Seriesloaders introduced in2011. The K Series medi-um wheel loaders offerexcellent fuel efficiencyand engines certified tomeet Tier 4 Interim andStage IIIB emissionsstandards in NorthAmerica and Europe.Other enhancements in-clude a new cab and op-erator station, which fea-ture a panoramic view, automatic climate con-trol and viscous mountsto reduce vibration.

The highly productiveK Series medium wheelloaders now offer op-tions specifically de-signed to enhance oper-ation in waste handling, recycling, scrap han-dling, demolition andother demanding indus-trial applications.

Purpose built guard-ing and componentsCat machine guarding

is purpose built to pro-tect major componentsand systems, and spe-cially engineered compo-nents are designed to re-sist damage in industrialapplications. For exam-ple, narrow, steel frontfenders fit close to theframe to help avoid dam-age, and the bottom andrear access steps in theindustrial loader pack-age are suspended byheavy duty steel cable.

Front frame guardsprotect the underside ofthe front half of the ma-chine. These guards pre-vent debris accumula-tion and damage to ma-jor components such asthe drive shaft and liftcylinders. Protecting theunderside of the rearhalf of the machine, bel-ly guards prevent debrisbuildup and damage tomajor components suchas the engine and trans-mission. The industrialpackage includes ahinged power trainguard and an optional, powered guard for allow-ing easy access to re-move debris. Axle sealguards provide protec-tion from wire or otherdebris that could wraparound the axle anddamage axle seals.

The optional heavyduty radiator guard pro-vides additional rear ma-chine protection. Theguard is hinged for easy

access to the airborne de-bris screen and coolingcores. To allow the cus-tomer to choose theamount of protectionneeded, three differentoptional guard designsare available to help pro-tect the cab glass. Thereare two front windshieldguard options and a fullcab glass guard available.Guards also are providedto shield the front, rearand roading lights fromdebris damage.

Hydraulic cylinders, too, have additionalguarding. Lift cylinderbaffles prevent debrisbuildup and compactionunder the lift cylinder.Hitch area guards pro-tect hydraulic lines andother components by en-closing the frame to re-duce debris entry. Steer-ing cylinder guards keepdebris off, and sliding tiltcylinder guards provideprotection from airbornedebris and from materialspilling from the bucket.

Optional variablepitch fan

An optional variablepitch fan helps clean thecooler cores from thebackside. The variablepitch fan enables chang-ing blade pitch to switchthe direction of air flow. The design delivers moreairflow in the reverse di-rection when comparedto a system that simplyreverses fan rotation,

and the system morethoroughly expels debrisfrom the cooler cores.

Flexport Tires available

Cat Flexport Tires area solid, ported design forflat proof operation in se-vere applications. Eachtire features ellipticalholes (ports) moldedthrough the outer ring ofthe sidewall for moreflexibility than a tradi-tional solid tire. The re-sult is less operator fa-tigue and less stress onthe machine. The secondgeneration Flexport tiresfeature improved, highquality rubber com-pounds for longer wear.In addition to the tread-ed design for unim-

proved surfaces, asmooth tread design isnow available for en-hanced durability in se-vere applications. TheFlexport tire is a com-plete assembly of rubberand wheel, which makesit quick and easy to in-stall a new set of tires.Caterpillar’s current

Flexport system is avail-able on the 950K, 962K,966K and 972K.
