You are invited! The WHCA Annual Convention is an exciting time to network, learn, and share. Join us this year for an exciting line up of educational sessions, networking opportunities, social events, fundraising for the WHCA-PAC, and Brain Dating! A new feature for this year’s convention, Brain Dates are about sharing knowledge. They are a one-on-one or a group conversation that you book with other participants and business providers while you are at convention. The Brain Date platform will launch on May 1 for all providers registered for convention. At that time, you will be able to build a profile—it is simple—and begin reaching out to make connections during the convention. We are providing four hours of time during the Tuesday and Wednesday schedules where you will not have to miss education to engage in Brain Dating. As well, you can connect via Brain Dates at any time during the convention, but we made sure you do not have to sacrifice educational sessions to do so. This year’s convention will feature up to 21 continuing education units in addition to Brain Dating time. Educational tracks include Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, Leadership, Quality, Safety, and General Audience. The WHCA Annual Convention would not be complete without some fun in the mix! Join us on Monday for the WHCA-PAC Spring Golf Invitational or the Wednesday evening Moulin Rouge WHCA-PAC Fun Night event. We have left Monday evening open for Dine Around so you can meet up with friends, customers, and business partners for dinner! Spokane has several great restaurants to enjoy! We are looking forward to a great time in Spokane. We hope you will register today, reserve your room, and make plans to enjoy, engage, and be enriched by your WHCA convention experience. If you have questions about registration, please contact Sandy Ostergard at the WHCA office. You can reach her at (800) 562-6170, extension 102. Sincerely,

Matt Fleming WHCA Convention Committee Chair

Brain Dating Since 2011, e180 has transformed world-class events into vibrant collaborative learning hubs with partners like C2 Montreal, Airbnb, TED, Cannes Lions and Salesforce. To do so, e180 deploys their unique social technology which generates thousands of brain dates– knowledge-sharing conversations that event participants book with each other while they’re at an event. Their recommendation engine curates an individualized selection of brain date topics for each participant, based on their behavior and interests.

This May, e180 brings brain dates to the WHCA Annual Convention, so that exhibitors and providers are able to connect outside of an exhibitor hall and build deeper relationships. We are looking forward to this new approach to meaningful and mutual connections as a replacement to the traditional Expo Hall. We have carved out four hours in the agenda that you can use for Brain Dating and not miss any CEU opportunities. You are welcome to set up a Brain Date at any time throughout the convention, and we will have a Brain Date Lounge set up on Tuesday and Wednesday to accommodate meetings. Thank you to our Brain Date sponsor:

The Convention KEYnote!

Wednesday, May 23, 2018 | 10:30 a.m. Jason Lyle Black, "The Backwards Piano Man®", is an award-winning pianist, composer, entertainer, and speaker, known for his performance on the Ellen Show and for his 30 million music video views worldwide. Black entered the music industry in 2004 with a self-produced album of original music, Flood of Keys. Five years later, he made his debut on YouTube and began performing and speaking to business and community audiences. In 2015, Black created a music video of Disney's Frozen that went on to be featured by Huffington Post, Good Morning America, and other national news outlets. This video was followed by a music video of Pixar's UP that also reached millions worldwide. The following year, Black released Piano Preludes, an album of original music, with label Stone Angel Music and producer Paul Cardall, which debuted at #1 on iTunes and #2 on the Billboard music charts. Critics called Piano Preludes "masterful...overflowing with grace, reverence, and heart." Black now works full-time as a national corporate entertainer, speaker, composer, and public touring artist. He is a frequent guest on television and radio programs, and he shares his keynote message Upside Down: It's a Matter of Perspective on how small shifts in strategy create huge impacts for individuals and organizations.

Educational Sessions

The WHCA Annual Convention educational sessions are split into several tracks and marked so you know the intended audience for each.

Assisted Living Skilled Nursing General Audience Safety Leadership Quality

Monday, May 21, 2018 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Abuse/Neglect Reporting in Assisted Living Elena Madrid, Lori Heiner, Amy Abbott Washington is recognized for being proactive and responsive in the protection of our vulnerable adult population. An integral part of abuse and neglect prevention and resident protection resides with the assisted living facility providers and the employees serving these individuals. The role of each and every provider, executive director, nurse, and employee is directed and reinforced in state laws and regulations. Failure to appropriately respond to abuse, abandonment, neglect and exploitation places vulnerable adults at risk and brings significant regulatory reprisal, including citations and enforcement actions. Unfortunately, there remains confusion and frequent citations regarding reporting abuse/neglect and the lack of thorough investigations. In this session representatives from DSHS/Residential Care Services and WHCA’s Lori Heiner and Elena Madrid will provide an overview and refresher to assisted living facility providers and employees regarding the requirements and expectations of Washington State related to Mandatory Reporting and Investigations. Providing Professional, Person-Centered Life Enrichment Services for Residents with Dementia Sarah Kneisler Recent research indicates that not only is the population of those over age 65 increasing, so is the prevalence of dementia. Currently five million individuals have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and that population is expected to increase to 13 to 16 million by 2050. Further research indicates that 95% of the residents in skilled nursing facilities, 90% of those residing in short term rehab units, and 90% of assisted living residents have a diagnosable cognitive

impairment. Nationally there has been a focus on reducing the use of off-label antipsychotic medications and increased attention has been given to the use of non-pharmacologic interventions. Skilled nursing facilities in numerous states have been inspected using the Focused Dementia Surveys based on the Focused Dementia Toolkit. Phases 1 and 2 of the Requirements of Participation and the Interpretive Guidance have been accomplished. Phase 3 changes will take effect in November 2019. This session will explore how the surveyor worksheets (Focused Dementia Care Toolkit) can be utilized to assess facility compliance and enhance optimal functioning for residents with dementia who are cared for in skilled care facilities. Focus will be given to the changes to the Requirements of Participation and Interpretive Guidance that effect the person-centered provision of life enrichment services. Specifically, this session will involve participants in a variety of programs designed to maximize the participation of the elders they serve in interventions that promote meaningful engagement and cognitive stimulation related to assessed strengths and cognitive challenges. Seeds of Trust Bev Parnell Among all the attributes of the greatest leaders of our time, one stands above the rest: they are all highly trusted. You can have a compelling vision, rock-solid strategy, excellent communication skills, innovative insight, and a skilled team, but if people don’t trust you, you will never get the results you want. Leaders who inspire trust garner better output, morale, retention, innovation, loyalty, and revenue. Mistrust fosters skepticism, frustration, low productivity, lost opportunity, and turnover. Trust affects a leader’s impact and the company’s bottom line more than any other single thing. In this session, you will become equipped with evidence-based, practical strategies to forego the time-killing, bureaucratic check-and-balance processes so often deployed in lieu of actual trust. There's Nothing Fine About Fines Brent Olson Employers can go for decades without ever having a visit from a Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Compliance Officer (CSHO). Because it could potentially happen at any point and without advanced notice, it is important to understand the process, what to do, and what to expect. Not only are the penalties associated with inspections going up, the number of inspections each year with penalties over $10,000 has increased approximately 45% since 2014. In this session,

Page 14: Washington Health Care Association Annual …Washington Health Care Association Annual Convention May 21-24, 2018 The Davenport Grand Hotel | Spokane, Washington You are invited! The

the presenter will identify common reasons why a compliance inspector would show up at your community. Attendees will receive updates to the regulations that affect the penalties associated with these types of inspections and tips to help navigate the inspection process. This session is sponsored by Employer Resources Northwest.

Monday, May 21, 2018 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Abuse/Neglect Reporting in Assisted Living, continued… Elena Madrid, Lori Heiner Providing Professional, Person-Centered Life Enrichement Services for Residents with Dementia, continued… Sarah Kneisler Taming the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the Workplace: Defeating Criticism, Contempt, Stonewalling, and Defensiveness Bev Parnell Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness and Stonewalling—the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse—can wreak havoc in your work life! Do these words sound familiar? Do you find yourself or team stuck in patterns that leave you exhausted, frustrated, or puzzled? Learn how to use down-to-earth antidotes to guard against the "cost of incivility" to stop these Four Horsemen in their tracks. What's in it for you? Targeted strategies to more effectively influence partnerships, teamwork, engagement, and service with world-class results.

Tuesday, May 22, 2018 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. Special Session for Associate Business Partners Increase Your Sales and Impact for Associate Business Professionals Lou Ann Brubaker There is one primary differentiator between companies that are increasing their market share with senior care centers and those that aren’t: the successful ones more substantially understand what keeps senior care providers awake at night and more capably align their solutions as the answer. During this session, Lou Ann Brubaker will share insight with business partners who serve post-acute providers on the things that challenge providers and share how to become a solution for providers.

8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. An Outward Mindset Opening Ceremonies and Kick-off Presentation Mitch Warner There are two distinct mindsets from which people and organizations operate—a self-focused inward mindset and an others-inclusive outward mindset. The Arbinger Group has done extensive research and work to help organizations shift to an outward mindset. Developing and implementing an outward mindset equips individuals with a set of self-awareness tools that help them see when they might be operating with an inward mindset; mindset-change tools that they can apply to turn their mindsets outward; accountability tools that help them to operate in their roles with an outward mindset; and collaboration tools that teams can deploy together in order to operate with an outward mindset. During this session, learn more about an outward mindset, how to operate with an outward mindset, and how to deploy this concept throughout your organization to create a culture that positively influences change. The opening ceremonies Kick-off Presentation is sponsored by Optum.

Are you working on a new construction project? Are you thinking about one? Representatives from Construction Review Services will be onsite throughout the WHCA convention to answer your questions or review plans with you. Set up a Braindate with them!

9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Standing Out and Fitting In - Culture in the Workplace Vicki McNealley We all know that people differ in their personalities, attitudes, and values. For example, some people like to spend their free time doing extreme sports, while others would rather don a Sith costume and attack their friends with light sabres at a science fiction convention. However, what many don’t realize is that individual differences aren’t just for playtime – an understanding of our individual personality is profoundly important in maximizing our happiness and productivity at work! We spend a third of our lives at work, and in our fast-paced world, people are moving around from job to job more frequently, seeking a company that allows them to maximize their potential, earn more money, or achieve a better work-life balance. Whatever our priorities, work feeds into many different aspects of our lives – it influences our self-identity, self-esteem, and opportunities for personal growth. During this session participants will learn about their personal communication style and how they blend into the workplace culture. This fun and interactive session will provide insight on how to better communicate and enjoy the culture and co-habitants of your workplace. The Art of Conversation Meagan English, Kathy LeVee Health care staff are constantly faced with the challenge of providing a service that everyone hopes to avoid, under circumstances that are (generally) less than ideal. Coupled with the responsibility of taking the best possible care of our residents, staff are often faced with navigating challenging, sometimes even critical, conversations. In this one hour session, we will talk about why people typically do what they do when navigating complicated conversations, and subsequently how to manage ourselves, and manage the dialogue in order to not only face the conversation, but handle it well.

10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Achieving Your Occupancy Goals in Assisted Living Lou Ann Brubaker The National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC) measured average assisted living facility occupancy as roughly 87%–yet some operations nationally are in the mid-to-upper 90s. In this marketing DEEP DIVE we’ll explore how assisted living leaders drive higher occupancy in terms of both external AND internal factors. This isn’t a ‘theoretical’ marketing discussion but one built upon effective best practices for 2018 and beyond. You’ll leave with immediately actionable strategies to jumpstart your occupancy efforts upon your return to your community. Qualifying the IMPACT of Clinical Interventions with CARE Item Set Tracy Fritts, Amy Hobbs, Ellen Strunk The goals of the Improving Medicare Post-Acute Care Transitions (IMPACT) Act of 2014 were to improve care, promote health, and support smarter spending. CMS has initiated the collection of functional data items with this aim in mind. Items from the CARE Tool have become CMS’s preferred method for collecting patient data related to functional improvement. The speakers will describe a case study company-wide initiative to not only collect, but also analyze and act on clinical outcomes using the CARE Item Set. Speakers will share the results of internal studies that utilized EHR and therapy software data to measure patient’s functional improvement in relationship to cost and length of stay. In addition, results demonstrating the impact of utilizing specific treatment interventions related to fall prevention, chronic condition management, identification of cognitive status, and biophysical agents will be revealed. This session is sponsored by Consonsus. The 5-Star Rating System - Overview from a Financier and Buyer's Perspective Jason Dopoulos, Bradley Granger The Nursing Home Compare website features a quality rating system that gives each nursing home a rating between 1 and 5 stars. Hospitals and ACOs are continually looking to build relationships with the highest rated providers. While many of us understand the output (or rating), it is difficult to understand the input and variables that make up the final rating. We will look to provide background on the rating system as well as recent changes that took place in 2017 and how future ratings are impacted. Expertise on the rating system will be provided by Brad Granger as he will dive into ways that you could look to improve your rating during your next survey. In addition, Matt Lindsay will explore the ways that financiers are viewing the rating system and ultimately what constraints this may have on your financing capabilities. Lastly, we will look at how potential buyers are using the system, especially those from outside the U.S. Specifically, we will look at how the quality and staffing metrics may affect how a buyer perceives the facility and ultimately how they bid on a prospective opportunity in the marketplace. 2:30 p.m. - 3:20 p.m. Time Management vs. Priority Management Amy Schmidt Every day we are pulled in and distracted by things that seem “urgent,” but are these tasks always as “important” as we think they are? The temptation for all of us is to deal with what is right in front of us—emails, demanding customers, phones ringing. While we focus on the immediate issues and demands of our role, we miss opportunities or become overwhelmed with not enough time in the day. In this session we will focus on the third habit of highly effective people—Put First things First—from Stephen Covey’s book, 7 Habits for Highly Effective People. When you say yes to something, you are always saying no to something else. We need to prioritize those things most emotionally or professionally valuable. To focus on the important things first, you must organize and manage time and events according to the priorities you have pre-established. The key to success is learning to focus on what is most important, while staying out of the urgent box. What if you are always able to effectively prioritize your tasks and hit deadlines, but customers demand your immediate attention? How do you find the balance between their needs, your relationship with them, and your tasks? Join us to learn more about time management v. priority management. Promoting Health and Healing Using Nature Therapy Orla Concannon Assisted living and skilled nursing providers have the opportunity to make a profound impact on the well-being and health of those for whom they provide care. This session will focus on Nature and Horticultural Therapy as a link to good health and healing. Over 200 evidence-based studies in healthcare settings show a significant link between nature and healing that can help reduce medications and healthcare costs, while giving residents new purpose. During this interactive session, you will learn how to create a healthier environment for residents and staff using nature and horticultural therapy. This therapeutic approach to care can aid in reducing unnecessary antipsychotic medications, intervene with behaviors, and contribute to optimal outcomes and life enrichment for residents. Not only is gardening great exercise, but the act of taking care of a living organism is stimulating and healing. You will learn about the many alternative therapies that can be incorporated to increase health and happiness in your community.

3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Developing and Implementing an Outward Mindset, continued… Mitch Warner Want Better Answers? Ask Better Questions Amy Schmidt The best “sales people” are NOT the ones that spin the information the best, they are the ones that ask better questions. Many senior housing marketers have been trained to “Sit-Tour-Sit” when meeting with prospective residents and families. The questions that the community representatives ask during the first “sit” will greatly impact the resulting tour and follow up. Our community representatives and marketers should really be focused on discovering what is driving the family to investigate senior housing options and what features are their biggest priorities. The purpose of the discovery is NOT to assess a resident’s level of care. Are you asking the best questions to uncover needs? To offer a solution, we first must identify needs. Our clients do not want to hear our laundry list of services, they want to share their unique concerns but often do not know how to begin. If we ask more questions about what a family hopes to gain or change, then we better know what services fit their vision. We can offer specific solutions and highlight advantages and benefits. It is true that a family often starts looking for housing and care options as a result of a health crisis, but there is more to their decision than just meeting their level of care. Our questions should go beyond level of care. Join us in this session to learn more about asking better questions in order to provide the best answers. Enhance Care Coordination and Strategic Priorities by Leveraging Rehabilitation Services Through Care Transition Process Ron Scharff Care model priorities are quickly changing as organizations assess outcomes and performance, work with various stakeholders and strategic partners, deal with constantly-changing patient needs, and balance financial and resource constraints. Rehabilitation services prove critical in constantly assessing patient transition and recovery. This session will explore rehabilitation services’ role across system-wide processes that shape recovery trajectory, patient experience, and overall financial performance. This session is sponsored by RehabCare.

3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. A New Perspective and Approach that Equips Nursing Staff, Lowers Liability, and Saves Lives Judy Salisbury This exciting new workshop offers a unique, supplemental training from the perspective of not only nursing but also an EMS provider and POA. Discover the important missing elements in the current training of nursing staff, why they are missing, and how to fill the gap. Realize the dangers of semantics which can be helpful in some respects. Participants will see why semantics can also hinder quality care and endanger lives. This workshop also addresses the process of avoiding the task-oriented mindset only, to a more medically-minded perspective for caregivers and staff. Participants will have an introduction to rapid assessments; what they are, how they save lives, and how naturally they fall within the scope of practice of caregivers. Also addressed are emergency medical situations, including if the unthinkable happens and what your nursing staff can and should do to save lives—including their own! Emotional Intelligence: The Other Kind of Smart Meagan English, Kathy LeVee In the world of long term care, we spend 99.9% of our time in relationship with someone else, whether it is employees, patients/residents, family members, peers, vendors, or someone else! Emotional Intelligence first came on the scene in 1995, and since that time the discoveries reveal that having a strong emotional quotient (EQ) is responsible for about 58% a person’s overall job performance. In this presentation, we will talk about how to strengthen relationships with the people around us (specifically our employees) through Emotional Intelligence, Empathy and Expectations. It might be known as “the other kind of smart,” but it is critically important.

Wednesday, May 23, 2018 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Partner with Your Pharmacy for eMAR Success LiAna Tschen, Nica Erickson As a professional in an assisted living facility, you are working to attract new residents and keep them safe. A strong medication management program is critical to both of those objectives. Many of you have taken the first step by adopting an EHR and eMAR system and now you’re concerned that an integration with your pharmacy provider could be difficult, time consuming, and not really make much of a difference in the end. The reality is, the benefits of an integration far outweigh the risks. When your eMAR system is integrated with the Pharmacy, it enables your staff to be more effective and efficient in delivering care. Integrations allow medication orders to transmit between pharmacy and facility, resulting in reduced medication errors and improved medication management monitoring. In this session, you will hear from three unique perspectives – pharmacist, nurse, and eMAR expert – about their collaboration on integration transitions. First-hand experiences will be shared, including the successes and challenges from case study examples. At the completion of this session, attendees will be able to operationalize an eMAR integration process with Pharmacy to improve patient care and safety. This session is sponsored by Consonus. Fostering Employee Engagement Brady Carlsen One of the biggest challenges in the post-acute profession is retaining high-performing employees. The allure of jobs that promise higher pay, better work conditions, or greater benefits can attract employees and threaten an organization’s success. The struggle of working within a limited budget and balancing resources is real. Competing to keep talented staff can feel like a losing battle. In the face of this complex issue,

the key to increasing employee engagement and retention may seem out of reach. However, there are simple, practical steps you can implement to begin making lasting change in your organization's employee turnover rate. In this session, participants will gain a greater understanding of the hierarchical needs of their employees. They will learn how to infuse greater purpose into their teams. Through a study of feedback and data, participants will identify trends that can point to areas of operations where conflicts may exist that employees are not reporting. Finally, participants will gather an arsenal of practical strategies they can incorporate into their operations to increase employee engagement and improve employee retention. This session is sponsored by Pinnacle Quality Insight. Soggy Bottom Blues: Low-Risk Urinary Incontinence, Does It Really Have to be This Prevalent? Jeff West Over 6,000 long-term nursing home residents in Washington are "low-risk" for bowel or bladder incontinence. Over half of these "low-risk" residents are assessed to be frequently or always incontinent. Choice and Preference Toileting Assistance (CAPTA) is an evidenced approach to restoring urinary continence to nursing home residents. While not every "low-risk" resident will be able to achieve urinary continence, wide-spread adoption of CAPTA could radically reduce the prevalence of urinary incontinence among the "low-risk" nursing home population. There are considerable quality of life and health benefits for residents and their families in restoring urinary continence when possible, and a strong business case can also be made for focusing on restoring continence rather than providing “incontinence care.” During this session, learn the prevalence of low-risk urinary incontinence, understand the advantages of using CAPTA, understand how to access CAPTA resources, and understand how to sustainably implement CAPTA in your facility. Wait, are your L&I premiums going up? The clock starts when workers are injured on the job, and delays are costly to both you and your employees. Does your employee have injury-related restrictions? What can or will you do to get them back to work? Is L&I paying compensation benefits while you answer these questions? Key actions at specific points in a claim can dramatically reduce the

duration and frustration of worker's compensation claims. This presentation focuses on what you, the employer, can do to take control of your workers' compensation program. This presentation will shed light on timelines and deadlines that can seem baffling and mysterious and ultimately cost you money and morale. Attendees will receive tools to assess safety programs, to help identify where to start building a program or shoring up your program to make it efficient and effective for you and your employees. Together, we will identify what to do when injuries happen, how to get the word out to your employees so they know what to do and how to communicate back to you effectively. Time away from work is the most damaging outcome on a claim for both employers and employees, so we will discuss return to work—how it works and why it works. I will also give you some tips and identify your rights as you work through ongoing claims. If you are frustrated with workers’ compensation, are just learning the ropes, or want to brush up on some key points, this is the workers' compensation claims presentation for you. Strategies for skin care will be presented with an emphasis on new technology. This session is sponsored by 3M. How Artificial Intelligence Impacts Best Practices in Fall Prevention for Dementia Care George Netscher, Raheema Hemraj In this session, we will provide a description of the best practices in geriatric fall prevention and the limitations in dementia care. We will then give an easyto-follow description of how new techniques in artificial intelligence (AI) are addressing these limitations. We will conclude with results from a 100person ongoing study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation as part of research between the UC Berkeley AI Research Laboratory (top five AI research group in the world), four assisted living providers in California, and SafelyYou Inc. (a startup company with which both speakers are affiliated). The results from the first memory care community enrolled in the study showed an 80% reduction in the number of falls and have already been published in JMIR (#1 medical informatics journal). We will have results from all 11 communities available at the conference. The first part of the presentation will focus on best practices for supporting dementia care and highlight where best practices for geriatric fall prevention often fail in dementia care due to practical limitations from affected individuals and staff. The second half of the presentation will address how applications like selfdriving cars have become possible through a new class of techniques in AI called deep learning and how these techniques can be applied to support memory care. This session is sponsored by SafelyYou, Inc.

2:30 p.m. - 3:20 p.m. OSHA Hot Buttons – What is Federal OSHA Focusing on in Long Term Care Centers? Steve Wilder There are seven common areas of concern and focus in an OSHA Inspection in a post-acute care center. During this session, we will review those seven areas of focus and ensure providers understand how penalties will be assigned and how the system of penalties work when there is failure to comply. We will also spend time helping providers understand what to do when inspectors arrive at your site and what to do when they have left the building or grounds. The Role of Silver and Zinc Oxide Chelates for the Prevention/Cure of Bacterial Infections in Long Term Care Guerry Grune, Sue Honan The use of toxic, non-female mimicking hormone containing skin care products has been in use for at least six decades, since the end of WWII. Only recently has this issue become recognized as a real health concern not only for patients in assisted care and hospital facilities, but everyone who purchases these products. In health care facilities, the additional prevalence of both gram positive and gram negative strains of infectious bacteria such as pseudomonas, aeruginosa, staphylococcus, e-coli, streptococcus pneumoniae, etc., often can be lethal. The use of chelated silver oxide in biopolymer gels has been shown to essentially eliminate these bacteria when administered in areas where either topical or internal infections exist. More specifically, with the assistance of Ms. Sue Honan, director of Baypointe, Bremerton, Washington, clinical studies begun in 2016 have shown

Page 22: Washington Health Care Association Annual …Washington Health Care Association Annual Convention May 21-24, 2018 The Davenport Grand Hotel | Spokane, Washington You are invited! The

that UTI and catheter-related infections in long term care facilities have essentially been eliminated with the use of 3rdRockEssentials' Nutrasporin(R) and Rashblock(R). In further human and animal studies, symptoms associated with bacteria-induced asthma, colds, and bedsores all have been either severely reduced or eliminated. Results of these trials will be presented. Many individuals suffering from the symptoms associated with insect bites, bee and jelly fish stings, poison oak and ivy, hives, rashes, as well as psoriasis and rosacea, do not understand the need to neutralize the acidic reaction occurring at the site of the affliction on the skin's surface. This presentation will also focus on the use of chelated zinc oxide formulations that immediately accomplish the neutralization of the pH at the afflicted site as well as the ability to sooth the area. In addition to soothing and healing with the use of 3rdRockEssentials Itchblock(R), information regarding how these same compounds provide the best possible sun care protection from UVA and UVB rays will be provided. This session is sponsored by 3rdRockEssentials.com.

Lasting Impressions: How to Build an Uncommon Leadership Approach Coyte Cooper This session is designed to outline a simple process that professionals can use to build a unique personal brand that radically enhances their leadership ability. It will show attendees how to create a core set of values that will build authenticity with others while driving uncommon results in key areas of their life. Unlike many leadership classes, this one focuses on your personal brand and how you portray it within the culture of your organization, both as a leader and a colleague. Practical Tips for Eliminating Inappropriate Use of Antipsychotic Medications Jeff West Antipsychotic medications are a treatment of last resort for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). The prevalence of antipsychotic use has steadily decreased in Washington post-acute settings as multi-disciplinary care teams have implemented better non-pharmaceutical approaches to treating BPSD. This presentation will review why antipsychotics are not the preferred method for treating BPSD and practical tips for systematically eliminating the inappropriate use of antipsychotics in nursing homes. Participants will understand the negative risk/benefit profile associated using antipsychotics for behaviors and symptoms related to dementia and be able to identify ways staff and residents and families can work together to identify root causes of behavior problems related to dementia. In addition, learn how to identify successful non-pharmaceutical interventions for treating behavior problems related to dementia and key organizational steps to systematically and sustainably eliminate inappropriate use of antipsychotics. This session is sponsored by Qualis Health. Unavoidable Pressure Ulcer/Injury, Kennedy Terminal Ulcer, Skin Failure: The Clinical and Regulatory Perspectives as We Know It Today Pamela Scarborough The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) agree NOT all pressure ulcers/injuries are avoidable. We now know, and CMS recognizes, there are situations where a person’s physiology begins to fail (multi-organ and homeostatic mechanism failures) and the skin, the largest organ of the body, fails in tandem with other organs at the end stages of life. This program will discuss the Kennedy Terminal Ulcer, the Unavoidable Pressure Ulcer/Injury, and Skin Failure. Are these terms synonyms for the same process, or are they different

8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Identifying Non-compliance, Systems, and How to Write a Solid Plan of Correction in Assisted Living Elena Madrid, Lori Heiner The regulatory environment for assisted living communities is not getting any easier. All the more reason for facilities to ensure they are able to identify non-compliance with the regulations, and be able to critically read a statement of deficiencies (SOD) in order to identify how and why the systems broke and led to failed facility practice. Identifying the why is imperative

to writing a solid plan of correction, ensuring compliance, and preventing uncorrected/repeat citations. Reading and understanding a deficiency report is key to determining how to correct the circumstances that led to the citation, as well as determining how to maintain that correction. Challenges arise when a statement of deficiencies is not clearly written or is difficult to understand. How can you fix an issue if you don’t understand what is required or where the department determined there was failed facility practice? This session will discuss the State- established processes for SOD writing in order for you to better understand how to read the facility’s statement of deficiencies. The session will further explore the key steps a facility should evaluate and determine in forming and implementing a plan of correction. Real-Time Care Coordination Across Organizational Boundaries: Opportunities and Limitations Ben Zaniello During this session, attendees will learn the importance of real-time care coordination across organizational boundaries in today’s healthcare environment with special consideration of the drivers propelling hospitals to engage with LTPAC organizations in this effort. This conversation is a must for those in post-acute care organizations involved in the development of care coordination efforts, and includes insights on ONC’s envisioned relationship between LTPAC and acute care providers, as well as an exploration of one acute care organization’s experience in engaging with LTPAC providers in coordinating patient care post-discharge. This session is sponsored by Collective Medical. Substance Use Disorder Among Health Professionals John Furman The National Council of State Boards of Nursing reports that drug abuse is among the most common complaints received by Boards of Nursing. Building Blocks for Antibiotic Stewardship Jeff West Phase 2 of the Requirements of Participation mandated antibiotic stewardship programs in skilled nursing facilities starting November 28, 2017. Stewardship programs are multi-faceted and pose challenges in several domains of nursing home operations including physician practice, nursing practice, education of staff, consultants, residents, and family members, data collection and tracking, Quality Assessment and Process Improvement (QAPI), pharmacy services, clinical documentation, and organizational policies and procedures. Fortunately, there are resources to address all these challenges. This session will review the seven core elements of an antibiotic stewardship program, the resources available to meet all seven core elements, and the experience of Washington skilled nursing facilities that have successfully used these resources to build antibiotic stewardship programs. This session is sponsored by Qualis Health.

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The Future is so Bright: The Intersection of Technology and Aging Jack York Today we utilize technology in virtually every facet of our lives. We are connected 24/7 to the world at large through email, Skype, smartphones, laptops, tablets, and a myriad of other applications and devices. Yet older adults living in senior living communities, particularly those individuals living with dementia, have been left out of this revolution. By highlighting real word examples of multimedia technologies delivered

through various adaptive computer systems, this presentation looks at how you can help change that reality. Learn best practices that have been identified by the early adopters to successfully implement person-based technology, including how to gain buy-in from staff, families, and the residents themselves. You will see examples of providers living in your state that have benefited from this type of engagement. This session is sponsored by It's Never 2 Late. Advocacy Update for Skilled Nursing Lauri St. Ours; Jeff Gombosky Your voice is more important than ever as we look to the 2019 legislative session, where we will be asking the Legislature to step up their investment in skilled nursing facility care. This session will focus on the strategies you can take to ensure your elected officials understand your challenges. This highly interactive session, led by the WHCA lobby team, will provide a brief overview of the legislative process, as well as tips and techniques for becoming an effective voice for your residents. Open to SNF staff at every level, we look forward to generating enthusiasm for legislative advocacy, and in helping you build confidence in your outreach efforts.

Jack York is co-founder of It’s Never 2 Late (iN2L), a company dedicated to helping older adults realize the full benefits of adaptive technology. Originally, Jack did not envision iN2L as a business; the impetus for what became the company was a philanthropic idea—to

donate computers to assisted living communities and nursing homes in southern California. With a 15-year background in the Silicon Valley, he saw a vast potential in fostering these connections but also saw that conventional technology was too difficult for virtually all of the residents to use in a meaningful way. As a result, in 1999, Jack retired as Vice President of Strategic Sales for Vishay Intertechnology and started what has become a successful gerontechnology company. He is a sought after national and international speaker on technology as a means to create personalized experiences that engage and connect residents to their loved ones and the world at large, specifically individuals with dementia. As of 2015, the company has a customer base of over 2,000 communities spread out across all 50 states. iN2L’s work has been recognized by the Wall Street Journal, NPR, and dozens of senior living publications. While at Providence Dr. Zaniello was the Medical Director of Population Health Informatics for Providence Health and Services in Seattle, Washington. He was responsible for the technical infrastructure that supports Providence’s work with the Boeing Preferred Partnership program, the Medicare Shared Savings Program, and other accountable care contracts. Prior to Providence, Dr. Zaniello led NIH-funded translational research in population health at University of Washington while consulting in healthcare technology, particularly EMR deployment and optimization. Previously, he worked at the early Java startup Marimba as well as the enterprise software company Trilogy in Austin, Texas where he helped build their Healthcare and Financial Services practice. Dr. Zaniello continues to practice in infectious disease in Seattle.
