Coach Estus HonoredCAK Girls Soccer Coach Ried Estus was recently named 2009-10 TSSAA Girls Soccer Coach of the year. This puts coach Estus in the running for the Southeast Section Coach of the Year and potentially National Coach of the Year.

“Our entire soccer program shares in the award,” Estus said. “We had 27 players contributing daily, two assistants coaching every day and I had the best seat in the house because I got to sit back and enjoy the fruit of our labor.”

Estus led the Warriors to the Class A-AA State Cham-pionship and a No. 27 national ranking last season.

“We prayed before every practice and match that we would use our talents to honor and glorify God and to use our soccer as a ministry,” Estus said. “I’m confident one day we’ll know how the Lord used us last year to affect change in the lives of our oppo-nents.”

Two teams = 1 BIG Difference!

Library NewsCAK is pleased to welcome two new librarians to our school.

Kristie Buckner joins us in the Elementary School. She has over eight years classroom experience and has taught everything from Kindergarten to 8th grade. Her Bachelors Degree is in Early Elementary Education from Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga. She also has a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Specialty in Reading from Tennessee Technology University and a Masters of Library and Information Sciences degree from Trevecca Nazarene University. Her hope is to instill a love of reading throughout the elementary school and to make the library the center of learning. She and her husband, along with her two sons, feel blessed and honored to be considered part of the CAK family. It is Mrs. Buckner’s hope and prayer that she will be able to watch her own children grow in the Christian love and traditions of CAK.

Todd Fife joins us as the Middle School Librarian. He has worked in libraries for 9 1/2 years, 6 1/2 years at Johnson Bible College and 3 years at the Sevier County Public Li-brary System. He graduated from Johnson Bible College in 2002 with a B.S. in Bible, specializing in Youth Ministry/Preaching and from North Carolina Central University in 2009 with a M.L.I.S. He attends Woodlawn Christian Church where he plays guitar in the worship band and volunteers with the middle and high school ministries. He is married to Britiney and they have one cat, Tigger.

We are planning some exciting events for the CAK Library Program. Watch this space for more information about activities, programs, and ways to get involved. If you are interested in volunteering in any of our librar-ies, please contact Diana Holden, Library Director at ext. 124 or [email protected].

raise $12,223.80 for the Hope Resource Center through the recent “Battle of the Bottles” fundraiser. Each school was given 1,000 baby bottles and asked to fill them with spare change or bills. On September 1, the bottles were gathered and the money was counted.

“This is very exciting and a blessing to this ministry,” said Lisa Hardin, Executive Director of the Hope Resource Center. “The Baby Bottle fundraiser is one of my favorites because it involves families. ‘Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it’ (Pro 22:6). Each time children add their change it’s an opportunity for parents to teach the value of life and pray for those who serve in this life-affirming ministry.”

Blue Crew a big hitIf you’ve attended a CAK sporting event this year, you may have noticed a rather large contingent of CAK students, standing, cheering loudly and wearing blue t-shirts.

These students make up a new club at CAK, called the “Blue Crew.”

Jamie Petrik, CAK’s Leadership Program Coor-dinator and Varsity Volleyball Coach, started the club to increase school spirit. It has taken off from there.

“The best thing about it is the students are embracing it,” Petrik said. “A few people have really taken on the leadership for the blue crew and that’s really fun for me to watch.”

The Blue Crew meets periodically to work on cheers. The goal is to make it out to all CAK sports by the end of the year.

“We want to have school spirit and we want to lift it up for Him,” Petrik said. “We want to pick up a player that’s down, we want to cheer in the right way and we just want to have fun.”

A NOTE FROM THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT:

Bleed BlueIf you have ever watched a golfer in competition, you understand the complexity of their mental calcula-tions. Often times it is difficult to comprehend the courage required to defeat the nerves and act so independently. There is a steady strength pumping through the veins of these champions. It is rewarding to witness!

Watching a golfer double-bogey a hole and then respond with a string of birdies requires a rare confidence and focus that was witnessed at the TSSAA DI Regional Championship. CAK freshman Sophia Schubert suffered a double-bogey on the 14th hole, but finished with three birdies and a par on the remaining holes. Her final score was a 72 (par) which lead her team to a Regional Championship and state appearance. The boys’ team finished with a Regional Championship and will pursue a back-to-back State Championship bid.

There are a lot of good schools and strong athletic programs; plenty of options for families. But we are blessed at CAK. So often, we make choices based on perceptions. Sometimes we fail to recognize the truth in front of us. CAK is a great school with excellent leadership and educators. The coaching staff is blessed in their ability to teach their sport and to provide spiritual support. The facili-ties are some of the best. The teams are steadily adding to the trophy case. CAK is recognized nationally among Christian schools. CAK Athlet-ics has the potential to become renowned as one of the top athletic programs among Christian schools in the southeast-ern region.

BLEED BLUE. Be proud of who we are. Be confident in why we do what we do. Celebrate success. Encourage when necessary. Recognize Christ in and through us. It is rewarding to witness!

I Thessalonians 5:10-12 (New International Version)10He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

A NOTE FROM THE DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT:

Different approach to fundraisingAt CAK, students are not asked to go door-to-door selling wrapping paper, magazines or cookie dough. Parents are not asked to bring catalogues with them to work. We do not hold car washes, candy sales, or bake sales.

Instead, we take a different approach to fundraising: We just ask.

Because this might be a new approach for some of you, we wanted to take the opportunity to answer a few questions about CAK’s fundraising efforts. The questions below are based on an article from the National Association of Inde-pendent Schools, “Gifts that Give Back.”

Q: Please explain to me the different opportunities that I have regarding giving.

Annual Giving Fund - The school’s checking ac-•count: Money for the school’s operating budget for that academic year. It is the money that makes up the difference between what tuition revenue produces and the cost of educating your child and running the school.

Capital Campaigns - Funding the building of ad-•ditions to our school: Major gifts are designated to meet a specific need. Often the needs are for building or facility enhancements. These capital campaign gifts are frequently large in size and are often donated over a period of several years.

Endowment Gifts - The school’s savings account: Gifts to this •fund help continue CAK’s plan for the future. When a school receives distributions from the Endowment, the principal is kept intact.

Planned Giving - A retirement account: A gift to the school •through a trust, annuity, insurance policy, or, as is most com-monly done, through a bequest. Please contact the Devel-opment Office for more information about planned giving.

Matching Gifts - A “buy one, get one free” opportunity for •the school: Over 500 American corporations who match or sometimes even triple their employees’ philanthropic gifts offer matching gifts. Check with your employer or visit our website at Employer Matching Gifts to determine whether your company participates. A matching gift form obtained from your employer may be sent to the Development Office for processing.

Q: Are gifts to Annual Giving tax deductible? Yes! Gifts are fully tax-deductible and you will receive an acknowledgment from the school for your tax records.

Q: Can I charge my gift to my debit or credit card? YES! Your gift can be charged to Master Card, Discover, or Visa online at www.cakwarrior.com/advancement/index.html.

Q: Can I make a gift of stock? Yes, please contact the school office for stock transfer information.

Q: My family is already paying tuition. How does my child benefit from my gift? Your gift supports the people and the programs that make Christian Academy of Knoxville such a special place: talented teachers, great facili-ties, and additional resources for academic courses. On a daily basis, your child receives personal attention, intellectual stimulation, challenges, and a level of freedom to take risks, dream dreams, and try things beyond the parameters of a rigid curriculum.

Q: Christian Academy of Knoxville has beautiful grounds and many other features. It does not appear as if the school needs money. Why should we give? It is easy to look at the school and see the wonderful facilities that God has already provided to us through the generosity of donors in previous years. However, we are a growing school, and the current facilities here are limited. In addition, annual giving helps support a robust financial aid program, technology enhancements, and facility improvements/updates.
