At the Wax Museum, the third graders, in character, stand quietly until someone steps on their start button. Once their button is activated, the character comes to life, telling about his/her childhood, adult life, claim to fame, and Christian testimony. The PRAY CAK team is excited to announce the opening of the CAK PRAYER ROOM which will give all members of the CAK family a place to go and be silent or to throw concerns at the feet of the Lord.

The Prayer Room is located behind the middle school and beside the elementary school, in the modular building. It is the third room on the left and it is open to everyone during regular school hours.

Laura Ingalls Wilder, Pocahantas, Davy Crockett, Abigail Adams, Jesse Owens, Paul Revere, Helen Keller, Abraham Lincoln, Colin Powell, Mother Teresa, Daniel Boone, George Washington, Martin Luther King

Jr., Mary Lou Retton, Florence Nightingale, Ronald Reagan, Kurt Warner, George Washington Carver, Tony Dungy and Theodore Reoosevelt.

These are just a few of the lives represented during the annual “Heroes of our Faith” Wax Museum, put on by the third grade at CAK last month.

Through this event, students had the opportunity to select a “Christian” character to read about and research. They had to write a report, cre-ate an information tri-board poster, and present orally, dressed as their characters, to family members, other grade levels, and guests. This project required the use of the library, technology, language research skills, writ-ing ability, creativity, and the art of oral expression.

At the Wax Museum, the third graders, in character, stand quietly until someone steps on their start button. Once their button is activated, the character comes to life, telling about his/her childhood, adult life, claim to fame, and Christian testimony. Bye Bye Birdie!CAK’s High School Musical Theatre has chosen Bye Bye Birdie for its annual musical, April 14th, 15th, and 16th. The show features a cast of 38 with additional CAK students involved in tech production and in the show’s live band. Kyle O’Connor will play the role of Conrad Birdie, the rock ‘n roll singer about to leave for the Army. Cast as the recipient of his “One Last Kiss” is Kaylee Verble as Kim Macaffe. The role of the singer’s manager, Albert Peterson, will be played by Micah Rob-inette, with Amanda Murphy as Rosie, his “girl Friday.” Alli Acuff will portray the role of Mae Peterson, Albert’s overbearing mom; and Travis Blackwell and Stephanie Lee will star in the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Macafee. Play-ing the role of Hugo Peabody will be Pete Cates.

Written by Edward Padula, Bye Bye Birdie is a musi-cal comedy based on a book by Michael Stewart with music by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams. The musi-cal was revived on Broadway during the 2009 theatre season. It is a delightful musical comedy which will appeal to all ages!

CAK High School Musical’s production of Bye Bye Birdie is also a “revival” of the musical on our campus! This show was the first high school musical theatre produc-tion presented by our high school. Our cast and crew would like to invite the first Bye Bye Birdie cast to a reunion celebration after our Saturday evening perfor-mance on April 16th. All former “Birdie” cast members mark your calendars! Contact Mrs. Filyaw at [email protected]. We would love to hear from you!

Chess Match: An inspiration to all

By Rose SwangerCAK Chess coach

Having been to chess tournaments (individual and team) for four straight years, I thought I had seen it all. The emotions after a round of chess can be summa-rized in four categories: elation, weeping, silence, and indifference.

What I never anticipated was the fighting spirit some CAK parents and I witnessed this year—a determina-tion to win.

The young Warrior is Cole McDaniel, a fourth grader from Mrs. Burnett’s class.

Chess club is a relatively new activity for CAK children. Unlike other well-established local school chess clubs, we just celebrated the first birthday of CAK chess club. Needless to say, we have few experienced players, but that did not stop CAK children from competing in the annual individual chess tournament.

As always, the most crowed section is the Elementary level, which consists of grades from 4th to 6th. This year there were 65 children competing in that section, and Cole was one of them.

Cole McDaniel had a piano recital the same day. His original plan was if he lost many rounds early on, he would skip the last two rounds in order to go to the recital. (There are usually six rounds at the elementary level.) He got up early that Saturday morning to prac-tice piano just in case. Unfortunately for Cole, he lost four games at the beginning, but instead of leaving, he told his dad that he wanted to hang around until he won one game.

Then in the fifth round, Cole tied his opponent. His face lit up like the sun finally came out of the clouds and his eyes showed the renewed enthusiasm of antici-pation.

When the final round was announced, many CAK par-ents began to cheer for Cole. We watched his combat with anxiousness, we held our breath with each of his moves, and we applauded him when he captured his opponent’s Queen leading to victory.

As soon as Cole exited from the competition area, we surrounded him with hugs and congratulations. We told him how proud we were of him, and Cole was beaming with a huge smile from ear to ear.

The story is not as dramatic as Hollywood would produce, but it touched my heart deeply. I was very impressed by Cole’s determination and perseverance. It reminded me of the story of the little engine that could. I know I have learned and been inspired by Cole, and I hope you will be too.

A new requirement for High School Graduation is completion of the Capstone Project.

Simply stated, the Capstone is a service project or internship students begin their junior year. The student comes up with the idea, obtains a mentor, completes the project and gives a professional presentation during his/her senior year. Each month, the Warrior News will highlight a couple of students as they walk through the process.

Here is a brief introduction to the remaining two of the four students who will share “A Day in the Life of the Capstone” in the coming months:

WN: What is the planned focus of your capstone project? LW: “I want to focus on the entire process of what it takes to buy a house (find a house / realtor, be able to pay for it / mortgage bro-ker and closing the

deal / title company). “

WN: What have you done so far to begin work on your project? LW: “I already know much about the mortgage busi-ness because I worked as a receptionist at a mortgage company this past summer. I don’t actually know how the system works, but I know some. I have also grown up with realtors in my family so I also know much of what goes into searching for homes, etc.”

WN: What impact do you plan to make through your project?LW: “I hope to provide an impact of integrity among jobs that can be known for being “scam artists” (loan sharks). If these businesses improve their integrity more people will trust them in the future with their money.”

WN: Favorite Bible Verse?LW: Galatians 2:20 - “I have been crucified by Christ and I no longer live but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

al Honor Society)

WN: What is the planned focus of your capstone project? AK: “I am working with CDC, CDCA and PreK CDC Students at Westhills Elementary

School. I work with individual students to help them with their school work and other everyday tasks.

WN: What have you done so far to begin work on your project? AK: “I have served 8 hours at Westhills. I journaled my experiences after these two days and I have written a letter to four of my teachers and Mr. Snider requesting permission to miss my morning classes once every 2 weeks.”

WN: What impact do you plan to make through your project?AK: “I plan to make an impact on each individual stu-dent. I also want to make an impact on the teachers. I want them to notice something different about me because I’m a believer.”

WN: What is your biggest fear/concern as you enter into your project?AK: “It is a new experience to be an authority figure in the classroom and it is intimidating. Sometimes I don’t know how to react with certain things the students do because they are special needs. It is also a little bit frightening because you never know what these kids will do.”

CAK Girls team at 2010 Spring Fling Track Meet

For a full report on CAK’s success in the 2010 State Tournament, visit www.cakwarriors.com/athletics/teams/track/index.html

Following the most successful season in school history, the CAK track teams will have their work cut out for them this season. Af-ter winning both the boys and girls Sectional Meet Titles in Kingsport last May, 16 athletes went on to represent CAK at the Spring Fling Track Meet, bringing home numerous state championships.

Consisting of only nine athletes, the girl’s team placed fourth out of 41 schools. They were only five points away from being the State Runner-Up. The boys followed up with three state championship titles and two new school records. The boy’s team, consist-ing of seven athletes, placed fourth out of 42 schools.

Returning to the 2011 season for the girls team are State Champions: Laura Foster, Abby Holt and Laura Morse. Returning senior Samuel Cunic hopes to find his way back to the state meet this year. Cunic was on the 4x800M relay team that finished fifth in the state meet last May. Other returning ath-letes looking to leave their mark on the track this year are distance runners Abbie Schout-ko and Chris Millis, sprinters Kiah Allen and Cody Brooksbank, and multi-athlete John Burkhart. There are also several newcomers that are displaying their talents early in the season.

In addition to all who graduated last spring, CAK will be without seniors Hannah Cox and Marcus Walker this season.

Cox, who recently signed with the University of Louisville, suffered a season-ending ACL tear last winter while training for the pole vault with the Olympic Gold Medalist Tim Mack. Cox holds four school records at CAK in the long jump, pentathalon and as anchor on the state 4x200M relay team.

Walker is unable to compete this year due to the TSSAA’s age eligibility rules. After only starting to com-pete in sports his sophomore year, Walker turned 19 a mere five weeks prior to the date of eligibility. Walker has signed with Carson Newman College to participate in football and track and field next fall.

Elementary School Supports Mission of HopeThe CAK Elementary School has chosen to support the Mission of Hope throughout this school year.

“We at Mission of Hope are truly honored and humbled by the support we receive from CAK Elementary (and from other levels at CAK as well) at Christmas and throughout the year,” said Shirley Plant, Mission of Hope Operations Manager.

As 2011 rolled around, the focus of this project turned to collecting food items. With that, a weekly schedule went out to CAK’s Elementary School families, asking them to “prayfully consider” how each family might be able to help those less fortunate.

On Feburary 25, the school completed its week of collecting Cans of Soup and Mac ‘n Cheese and it was evident that God had provided. The table in the lobby of the Elementary school was overflowing with the requested items.

“This is such an easy way for our families to share their blessings with others,” Elementary School Vice Prin-cipal Jan Kitelynn said. “We are very pleased with the response and are anxious to get started on our next list of requested items.”

Jesus said in Matthew 25:40:

“I tell you the truth, whatever you did

for one of the least of these brothers of

mine, you did it for me.”

Next collection (March 21 - 25)Oatmeal (instant or Quick), Flour (5 lb bag), Sugar (4 lb

bag), Rice(2 lb bag) and Cornmeal Mix (5 lb bag)
