RCIA – Instruction in the Catholic Faith (at St B)

Classes will resume in early 2015!

NO WEDNESDAY MASS

There will be no morning Mass this Wednesday (New Year’s Eve). The normal weekly Mass schedule will resume next week.

Coats Needed!

As every year, we have noticed several children coming to our youth program not dressed appropriately for the weather. Coach Murphy would like to be able to offer jackets to them. Please talk to your family and friends and take up a collection of no-longer-needed children’s jackets for the church; they will go to good use!

NEW YEAR’S EVE/DAY SCHEDULE HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION

(last holy day until August!)

Plan ahead so that you can fulfill your religious obligation! Missing Mass on a Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation is objectively a mortal sin (Catechism of the Catholic Church # 2181), requiring sacramental confession to be forgiven.

Wednesday-Thursday, December 31-January 1

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

Mass at Holy Rosary: 8:30am New Year’s Day

Masses at St. Barnabas: 6:00pm New Year’s Eve 7:00am & 8:30am New Year’s Day

NEW! Birmingham – Statewide March For Life

You are invited to participate in the Birmingham March For Life on Saturday, January 17. The day will begin with a Respect Life Mass at 9:00am at the Cathedral of St. Paul, 2120 3rd Avenue North, and will continue with the march beginning at Brother Bryan Park, 22nd Street & 10th Avenue South, at 10:45am. More information can be found at http://www.BirminghamMarchforLife.com.

NEW! Christmas Is Just Beginning!

In the Church’s liturgical calendar, Christmas is celebrated until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which this year falls on Sunday, January 11. In some places (such as parts of Italy), the decorations traditionally stay up all the way until the Feast of the Presentation (February 2), making it a full 40-day season, following an ancient custom. Others celebrate just the traditional “12 days” (ending on the Epiphany, January 6). Whatever tradition you choose to observe, Christmas is just beginning. Resist the worldly tradition of having Christmas end on December 25!

Knights of Columbus News

The Knights of Columbus are collecting children's coats, reading materials, and flash cards. The drive will end this weekend – December 27/28. We will collect both new and gently used coats and learning materials.

Contribution Statements

Fr. Jerabek will prepare and mail contribution statements for 2014 for your information and tax purposes, sometime in early January. It is only possible to prepare statements for those who have donated via check; or if by cash, with an envelope; or for those who have donated in-kind gifts or services. Please be sure to pick up your Offertory Envelopes, if you have not done so already, and use them faithfully in the coming year, so that you can be sure to receive a contribution statement for 2015! Thank you!

Father Jerabek Time Off

From Christmas Day until New Year’s Day, apart from regularly-scheduled Masses/confessions and emergencies, Father Jerabek will be unavailable. Please never hesitate to call for a sacramental emergency.

NEW! Homilies Online

Did you know that Father Jerabek’s homilies are online? Currently, they may be downloaded from the St. Barnabas web site. As our Holy Rosary web site continues to develop, they will be available there as well. For now, check out http://barnabascatholic.com, clicking the link for “Father Jerabek’s Homilies” on the right-hand side. Of course, the weekly bulletin for Holy Rosary may always be accessed at our own site, http://www.holyrosarybirmingham.com.

We’ve Got Mail

We recently received some mail from an old friend, Sister Rita Vogelsang. Here is a scan of her original note, as well as a transcription.

Dec. 9, 2014

Hello Everyone! As often as I think of many of you, you would receive a card/e-mail one to two times a week. Your helpfulness and kindness will not be forgotten — working in and for the Youth Center, Pantry, and for other parish needs. Am fine, working mainly as a volunteer in a local hospital and here in the office, a HUD facility. Enjoyed reading the article in One Voice describing your 125th anniversary. God Bless You! Sincerely, Sr. Rita Sr. Rita’s Address

If you’d like to send Christmas greetings to Sr. Rita, you may do so at:

First Friday Mass & Holy Hour at Holy Rosary

Our First Friday Mass and Holy Hour will take place this week (Friday, January 2), starting with Holy Mass at 1:30pm. The Holy Hour will go from 2:00–3:00pm. (This is a reduction in adoration time with respect to the recent past, due to lower participation.)

First Saturday Mass at St. Barnabas

St. Barnabas will host its monthly First Saturday Mass this coming Saturday, January 3, at 8:30am. All are welcome!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
