Times are tough for small businesses on the Coast, and tradies in particular are feeling the crunch. But even with so many struggling to find steady work, there has been overwhelming support from tradespeople and small business owners who have begun pledging their time, materials and services to help with Wishlist’s newest project, Wishlist House. The house will be built by Ausmar Homes on land provided by Stockland, and auctioned with all proceeds directed to expanding the local ophthalmology service for public patients here on the Sunshine Coast. As construction gets underway, Tony Bryan of Ausmar Homes says he is overwhelmed by the offers of help that have been flooding in. “These guys are all struggling for work and not earning money in a very quiet market, but they’re still keen to work for free on a good cause,” he said.A great example of this is Darren Low, owner of D & K Carpentry who is donating his skills to complete all the carpentry work in the new house, despite admitting things have been tough lately. “The last two years have been shocking, probably the worst I’ve seen on the Coast,” Darren said. “Donating money is a tough ask right now, but I can give my time.” It will take close to ten days to complete the carpentry work, and although time is money, Darren said he was happy to be involved with the project. “I’ve got kids too, and count my lucky stars everyday that they are healthy,” he said. “If any of my family or friends get sick or need medical help, it’s great to know they will be able to be treated here and that all money raised is staying local.”

Acclaim Apprentices have also come on board and agreed to donate the time of the two ap-prentices working with Darren on Wishlist House. As for small business owners, they too have felt the financial crunch of late but are still de-termined to help any way they can. Shane O’ Donoghue, owner of Aawun Furniture Removals, said he heard about Wishlist House and immediately felt excited that this was something his family could get involved in. “As a small family business operating on the Sun-shine Coast, times can be hard, but we have been so well supported by the community that we feel grateful for this chance to give some-thing back,” Shane said. As a father of twins who were born a stagger-ing ten weeks premature, Shane said he was amazed and grateful that the babies were per-fectly healthy, as being so tiny there was any number of things that could have gone wrong. “Thinking of other Coast families who need ophthalmological help makes me realise how important this project is, and we are happy to volunteer our trucks, labour and time to what-ever is needed,” he said.
