NEXT MEETING

ISSUE: June/July 2014

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Our 40th Birthday was a lovely event to celebrate, the buzz in the room at the Hillarys Yacht Club warmed my heart as you enjoyed the fellowship and rekindled old friendships in the Ballroom overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean.Foundation and Life Member Ken Waugh told of the early days and problems they had to overcome with mounting Exhibi-tions. Unfortunately not much has changed. An important part of our 40th Birthday was the granting of Life Membership to 5 Ladies. When you join a Social Club, you do so for many reasons and one is having something in common with the other members. In our case it’s Art. To belong to the same Club for 40 years is a wonderful achievement. In appreciation of their loyalty and support the committee has chosen to honour 5 ladies with Life Membership to Wanneroo Joondalup Art Society. The Mayor of Joondalup, Troy Pickard presented these spe-cial ladies with their Certificates; Rita Peters, Judith Jordon, Wendy Latham and Noreen Essex. Vera Makse was unfortu-nately unable to attend. Congratulations ladies.Artwork evokes memories and at the 40th lunch, one of our Guest Speakers, The Mayor of Wanneroo, Tracey Roberts, kept looking at a painting by Graham Dowley, this beautiful Pastel Painting of the Rottnest Basin. Tracey’s sons have enjoyed many happy moments swimming in The Basin during family holidays. I introduced Graham to Tracey and a deal was struck. Congratulations Graham.I received the sad new this week that the President of the Trigg Art Club, Denis Hird aged 60, died suddenly. Condolences from WJAS have been sent to the family. Many of our members belong to both clubs and I offer my sympathy to those affected. The successful May Exhibition and AGM are now behind us and we move forward to the September Exhibition.Happy Painting.

June Demonstrator: Julie Silvester Julie was both entertaining and inspirational. I am sure she convinced some of our members to try painting with pastels and those that already use the medium, were given inspiration on how to be brave and experiment even more than they are currently doing.Julie’s demonstration was of the salt lake at Rottnest, which showed the pink glow, water and rough terrain of the lake. She demonstrated the use of pastels on a texturedsurface and the advantages of working on a primed sur-face apposed to paper. Julie uses the reverse side of a matt board with 2 coats of pastel prima (Art Spectrum Prima – Deep Ultra). The matt board is acid free and you can usually get off cuts from various places. You can add grit to the prima for extra texture and/or paint the primain different directions using a stiff brush. For a smooth finish, brush in one direction.Julie’s message to us all was:Paint something that excites you. Enjoy painting it and repeat it over, if you enjoy it.Enjoy textures and use photos you love. When taking pictures to paint, look at the area and study it at different times of the day and use the pictures as a reference only. She stresses the use of composition and colour as well as touching on how important tone is to make a painting from being dull!Points to note:Break things down into 3 tones (sky – select 80-84 Blue - Mount Vision)Buy a set of colour fromlight to darkMount Vision Pastels are good value (buy online)Purchase pastels in sets (i.e. Landscape set – Mount Vision)Use Masking tape to get a straight horizon (Panda from Bunnings)Use a hard rubber to rub backThink of the finished look before you start (ie start with a rough/smooth surface)Take time to work out what pressure to use with your pastelUse a stiff brush to remove unwanted or smooth out edgesMake more texture in the foregroundSmooth areas can be deadThe more you overlay, the duller it gets however,Build on layers with use of different colours under each layerUse a damp sponge to remove pastel areas and then go over to rework rather than over working the area. Even go back to re-priming the area and start again. Most of all, have fun and don’t feel fearful!Thank you JulieTrish Wheatly who did the Article for Brushnotes, thankyou

The South African Gospel Choir singing in their amazingly bright outfits entertained the guests

The Mayor of Wanneroo Tracy Roberts gave a talk including the works on show, especially one beautiful painting of ‘The Basin’ at Rottnest Island

July Demonstrator Julie StittDemonstrated ‘Daniel Smith’ (DS) watercolours and other media for WJAS on a Fredrix mixed media board. Also on display was a work in progress on 340gsm WC paper of flowersJulie prefers to use sable brushesWood, glass, canvas, fabric, lucky stones, papers etc can be primed with DS Primer for Watercolours or just sec-tions of a work for detail. Also available is a translucent primer for watercolours. Using these primers allows for normal styles of WC painting including wet on wetand for other paint including oil paint. Note: all waterco-lours should be framed behind glassAnother great product on show was DS, WC real paint samples with labels and squeezed onto handy small sheets in 3 sizes, so you can sample all or some of DS colour before you really spend buying tubes of colour- each sheet will do about 3 paintings. Jacksons sell them for less than $5Julie did not actually paint a lot of her work in progress as questions on DS products were answered. Julie likes to work on small individual areas of her work creating gentle colour graduations slowly spreading the colour with a small damp brush and a drier brush. Inktense pencils were also employed in her workvery carefully as they are strong colours and can be overdoneThank you for your demonstration Julie
