Wandong Fire Brigade Wandong Fire Brigade has been busy assisting at a number of largeish fires this month including at Donnybrook, Wallan, Caveat and Tarcombe. The fire season is NOT yet over and it is important to remain aware of conditions and be prepared to enact your family fire plan if necessary. We are always grateful for the support from our community. You may have seen us on the long weekend at BP southbound rattling tins … so if we ran into you, thank you for your support!

Wandong Fire Brigade Trivia Night You might like to save the date for our second ever Trivia night which will be held on Saturday 25 th May at the LB Davern reserve hall. Tickets are $20 and it will be a guaranteed great night out. Check out our FB page for details as they come out. For tickets, contact Shane on 0430 003 941

Joy FM Our Captain Yorin Miller was recently invited to speak on the GLLO Show on Joy 94.9 FM along with the Emergency Management Victoria Commissioner Andrew Crisp on the current fire season and diversity within the CFA. Wandong Fire Brigade prides themselves on welcoming members from all backgrounds and maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all members and their families. This interview may be heard via the GLLO show website.

Wandong Fire Brigade will be recruiting new daytime firefighters! Wandong Fire Brigade is a 100% volunteer brigade made up of people living in the Wandong / Heathcote Junction area. Recent Total Fire Ban days on weekdays have highlighted our need to increase our daytime firefighter numbers again. We are currently looking for new people who are available during weekday daytime hours to join the brigade and train as firefighters. All training is provided, and is nationally accredited. There is no financial expense to volunteers, just your time and commitment. Uniforms are provided and it is a great way to meet new people and form friendships, develop new skills and have greater involvement in your local community. Active members also have the opportunity to gain valuable transferable qualifications including first aid certificates and truck licenses. If you are interested in hearing more about becoming a firefighter with Wandong Fire Brigade please call Captain Yorin Miller 0418 568 598 or Lt Liam Edwards on 0424 896 824.

Total Fire Ban (TFB) days There have been a number of Total Fire Ban (TFB) days already this season. On TFB days, No fire can be lit in the open air, or be allowed to remain alight between 00:01AM and 11.59PM. For further info search for ―CFA Can I or Can’t I?‖ on what is permitted regarding fire sources on TFB days and during the fire season. Victoria has had over 2,500 grass and bush fires since December 1. Many have been controlled quite quickly, however we now have a number of larger going fires. These are requiring the moving of crews from other areas to help support local crews. This is the hottest start to Autumn in 30 years, following the hottest Summer on record. Stay aware of your surroundings and if you’re travelling or in unfamiliar places, make sure you are aware of the local risk. Know how to stay informed and never rely on one source for emergency information. Look after yourself in the heat. Drink plenty of water and check in on others. Look after those most at risk in the heat – your neighbour living alone, the elderly, the young, people with a medical condition and don’t forget your pets.

Fire Information in an Emergency During an emergency, Wandong Fire Brigade is not always able to update their facebook page immediately as our admin are all volunteer firefighters, and their priority is to attend to the incident. Updates will be made as soon as practicable. Check out these sources for official information during a fire or other emergency.

The WHJCG sincerely thanks the eleven volunteers who helped on Clean Up Australia Day Sunday 3rd March. The hot weather was against us but we still managed to collect 32 bags of rubbish and other junk from our town and surrounds but if we had more volunteers we could have done so much more.

During the past very hot months members have had to water many native plants that they placed on Rail Street and St Michaels Catholic Church. We do not believe the Shire is giving equivalent watering to 50 pin oak trees they planted last winter and it looks like we may lose some.

We have also met with Shire officers regarding grass mowing in Wandong because the Parks and Gardens staff are not mowing all areas that were mowed a year ago. We had some wins but also some hand balling to VicRo-ads and Victrack. We are still waiting on the Shire to remove the trees sitting on the mesh fence along Rail Street and to remove the dead branches. We live in hope but like much maintenance in Wandong we will probably have to do this work ourselves.

Please support our major fund raiser for the year by buying tickets in our Easter egg basket raffle. Members have ticket books or visit us on Saturday mornings at the IGA sausage sizzles.

GOOD MANNERS - GOLDEN RULES

Hello readers, I shall continue on from last months article about wise instruction reminding us of the olden GOLDEN RULES of the Children's National Guild of Courtesy. Comparisons today are just so blatantly obvious how much the degenerating attitudes and disrespect for people or belongings are being displayed. Sadly this is shown in the daily media where we see so many gruesome images. So let's just turn back the clock for a while, again having a look at some more of these good habits, that may even seem infantile to some of the younger generations. Some need to be instilled into our various lifestyles which may be advantageous..

Never be rude, always paying attention to anybody whether older or younger, richer or poorer, than yourself. Do not make fun of old or crippled people, but be particularly polite to them, as well as to strangers and foreigners. Many of us still need to work on this more. Always mind your own business. Be punctual. Be tidy. Remember to respect people's privacy and space, knocking first before entering. Always be courteous, giving a seat or what is needed or necessary wherever you find yourself. So in every possible way, save them trouble.

Matthew 5 verse 43: Love your neighbour as yourself in the Bible reminds us of this.

Do not push nor run against people. So many victims over recent times because of this have lost their lives, escalating into driving cars into others.. Do not chalk on doors, walls and gates. Unauthorised graffitti is prevalent. Now we see how proud the youth are as they leave their own tag on all kinds of public property, sometimes performing dangerous acts to achieve this.Do not throw stones or destroy property Not just stones, but all kinds of weapons affecting many people's lives bringing in great fear. Do not annoy shop keepers by loitering at their shop doors or window. In the night hours we see some of the youth even in Mitchell Shire hanging around, sadly some asking for various drugs. Do not make slides on the pavement or throw orange peel or banana skins there, dangerous accidents often resulting from these practices. Wouldn't it be wonder-ful if life was still that simple?

Matthew 5 verse 44: is the hardest for all mankind to carry out as it is asking us to Love your enemies and bless them. In our own strength and humanism we all find this difficult living amongst a violent world with many retaliating .But God says that He can help us if we only ask in prayer. So let's keep asking.

KILMORE GOLF CLUB

WANDONG HISTORY GROUP This month on Sunday March 24th the History Group is holding its annual “Back to Wandong luncheon” at the Australiana Restaurant. The luncheon has been running for many years previously organised by Marie Elson. Not wanting to see it stop the History Group has taken over the running of it, which is very pleasing to the ones who want it to continue. They look forward to the annual visit to catch up with old school mates. Many hearty laughs are heard as they reminisce about old times living in Wandong. This year we have two guest speakers Ron and Lawrie Pickett. Sounds like a very interesting day. If you have any sporting memorabilia of Wandong bring it along. The girls at the Australiana put on a delicious smorgasbord, for $34. If you want to attend let me know ASAP for booking purposes.

Update on Gwen, she is now home from her recent surgery and on the mend. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

GARDEN SCENE WITH GAIL

Ladies: FRIDAY MORNING, 9am to 12 noon

DROP IN FOR A CUPPA & A CHAT (during term times)

Welcome to Autumn and here’s hoping that we get some good rain during this season to boost a little growth, water our gardens, provide a big drink for the mature trees (native and introduced) and fill water tanks. Let’s hope that it’s widespread and all the areas that need it, get it. It’s been a very dry Summer and because of this some soils can become dry and powdery, resisting and repelling moisture which in turn can result in the root of the plant becoming dry and in quite a few cases plants wilt and die. Once roots dry out for a length of time, they may not then be able to absorb moisture. These fine fibrous roots that feed our plants need to be kept moist and encouraged to go deep into the soil where it is cooler and hopefully a bit damper. That’s one reason that our furry friends like to dig a hole and lay in it, it’s cooler. It would be a good idea coming in to Autumn to top-dress our soil, gardens, lawns and potted plants with a wetting agent and follow up with a liquid fertiliser such as well-rotted cow manure and then mulch well. If your potted plants have flowered, it may be time to refresh the potting mix and give them a light prune. If they are in flower leave it until they have flowered and it’s really a good idea to do this in the shade or cooler part of the day or on a cooler day. Dig out the old potting mix around the edge of the pot as much as you can without disturbing the roots of your plant. Get yourself some good quality potting mix because don’t forget, this potting mix needs to provide your much-loved plant with all the nutrients and good stuff until next time you repot. Pop the fresh potting mix into the areas that you have taken out the old potting mix and water the plant really well then follow up with a solution of seasol for a couple of weeks. It’s also a good idea to keep the refreshed plant in a shaded area out of the hot sun until it has fully recovered and if this is not possible pop a light-coloured shade cloth over it to enable light to get through but not too much sun. An umbrella is fantastic if you can keep it anchored from the winds. N.B Only put the used potting mix onto your garden if it doesn’t have any mould or mildew showing on it. If you are wanting to up size your plant into a bigger pot try to do this in the shade, cooler part of the day or on a cooler day if possible. Ensure that you have your good quality fresh potting mix handy, (water crystals and fertiliser if you are using these) a bucket bigger enough to fit the root ball of the plant, secateurs, seasol and water. An hour or so before you start repotting, water the plant in its pot, really well before you take it out and follow up with a seasol solution. When the plant has been well watered and the seasol solution has been absorbed lay the pot on its side and gently tap the side of the pot all the way round to loosen the plant. If this doesn’t work because the soil is too tight or just that the plant doesn’t want to budge, get a garden fork and gently work the plant/soil away from the side of the pot until it will come out easy. Once free of the pot fork away as much of the old potting mix from the root ball without exposing too much of the root system, do not let these roots dry out. Pop the plant directly into your bucket of water and seasol solution and probably more excess potting mix will come away from the plant and that’s okay. Now prepare the new pot with fresh potting mix, fertiliser and water crystals if you chose to use them and whatever the depth of the plant root ball bring the potting mix up to that depth in the up sized pot. If the old potting mix is still tight around the root ball using the garden fork again loosen as much as possible before you pop into the upsized pot. Water well and then water in a seasol solution and use a seasol solution again in a week. Keep the newly up sized plant in a cool area for a short time while it is getting used to its new home. Try to be water-wise and if possible use water from your washing machine on your plants if you are washing with an environmen-tally suitable product.

Have a fantastic March, bye for now,

Gail Mains Kendrick

WANDONG PUBLIC HALL Finally we have arrived at autumn, my favourite time of the year in Wandong, but if we don’t see some rain soon all our efforts to enhance our hall garden may be in vain. The committee are keen to install a watering system, this would reduce the amount of water we use and make better use of the water we do use. At this point in time we do not have sufficient funds to do it but hope-fully we can get it done before next summer.

We would love a few more regular groups using the hall, so if you have something that work well

in our space contact us, we are happy to work with locals to ensure they are getting the best use

out of their hall.

Our regular user groups are: The Craft group attend every Monday, it’s an informal group, bring along some lunch, and something to do if you feel like it.. What’s been happening in February? Quite a bit actually.

The bushfire recovery commemoration was a big event in Wandong and many of our members attended. Lions were in charge of the catering and Ray, Hugh and Ron flat out at times with snags and drinks. Bill and Marie Forbes also looked after the jump-ing castle and Jeanette Kenny was busy making fairy floss. We had so many mem-bers working hard that I was able to swan around and look important, which I do very well.

Lion Marilyn Moore’s wool project is still in full swing. Marilyn is supplying wool to be knitted into beanies to be distributed to a number of worthy causes. There are several community groups and many individual knitters involved. To date she has received over 400 beanies, well on the way to the target of 500 by April. If you would like to get involved you could contact Marilyn on 5783 1810 or text her at 0411 470 581. She would love to hear from you.

On Saturday four of our members, Dianne, Cliff, Sonia and Dave helped out the Nagambie club for the Lake Nagambie colour run. The idea is to throw coloured corn flower at the participants as they run past. Judging by the photos that I saw Dianne and Cliff must have been throwing the stuff at each other. Well done people.

That is about it for this month. We have done several bbqs and have several more coming up and the onions are still going on the bottom.

What does being a good neighbour mean to you? Having neighbours you can trust, who will help you out when needed, or keep an eye on your place when you're not around, is enormously reassuring.

It doesn't take much for us all to be good neigh-bours and create a happier, safer, more harmoni-ous community. So next time you see someone who lives next door or across the road, say "hi" and wave hello. Let's watch out for each other.

Clonbinane Rural Fire Brigade Fire Danger Status

We have been fortunate that this fire season has not produced many CFA turnout responses in our own area. Clonbinane CFA wish to acknowledge your vigilance and fire prevention work that you have carried out so far this season. The fire danger season is not over taking into consideration that there has been very little rain since the middle of last December. There is many leaves falling from trees due to heat stress. Consider another check of your gutters and around your home. Do you need another clean up?

The cooler mornings indicate that autumn is approaching; however be aware that bushfires can still occur and spread quickly in the cooler months due to fuel load, wind and the low moisture content of that fuel. We have experienced some big fires over the years at this time of year. These fires have not necessarily been on warm days and are often driven by a strong southerly wind.

Campfires

Clonbinane CFA recently conducted a spot check of campsite fireplaces in the Mt.Disappointment State Forest on a Total Fire Ban day. We found four fireplaces where hot coals remained. We found one campsite that was not in a camping area and the fire had been lit very close to flammable items and bush. It was hot windy weather and this fire had hot coals.

If you are camping over the Labour Day Long Weekend or Easter and have a fire, you must have an area cleared in at least 3 metres in all directions and have water available to extinguish a fire. In National and State Parks, campfires and barbecues may only be lit in designated constructed fireplaces provided. A ring of rocks is not considered a fireplace under these terms. Do not deposit glass, aluminium, plastic, rubbish or scrap food products into your campfire. Please take these home with you. Leaving these items at your campsite is littering and subject to on the spot fines. A responsible adult must attend to supervise a solid fuel camp-fire or barbeque at all times. In attendance means being within 50 metres and having line of sight from the outer perimeter of your solid fuel campfire or barbecue. You must always fully extinguish your campfire with water, not dirt scraped over the top of it. You cannot leave any hot embers remaining in your campfire. Remember, if your campfire is cool to touch, it is safe to leave.

Check CFA and DELWP websites for further details on the rules and law related to campfires.

Please contact the brigade if you require any information or check out the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au

Cheers

Wandong Junior Football Club Inc.

WJFNC are looking forward to another season, however we need our local community to support us. We have coaches for all age groups U10-16 but need players and their families, friends and relatives to come and lend a hand. We’ve got children who’ve been with us and may not get to play their 100th game with us this year if we can’t rally up the support for our U16s and put a complete team on the field.

With last years strong committee leadership and fundraising efforts a new electronic score-board has been purchased for the oval, new Warrior apparel is available for players, family and the community to purchase, so come on down on either Tuesdays or Thursday training and grab a hoodie ready to cheer on your local community footy team.

We have numerous affordable sponsorship packages for local businesses, volunteers are always welcome at training and on game days. We’re a family oriented club where our little ones play together while their siblings are taking the field and we ALL play at the same ven-ue regardless of age group.

Our summer season has almost finished with only one round to go. All junior teams (5) and

senior teams (2) will all compete in the finals. Hopefully we will bring home a few flags.

Night tennis is still going strong with all our teams doing well.

Tennis coaching is available at the club. If you are interested please contact our coach

Jesse on 0423 382 268 or email the club. New members always welcome.

Pre-season skills training with Leanne Ross was very successful with over 40 participants from all age groups attending each week. We can't thank Leanne enough for her generous donation of time and knowledge, the kids have really enjoyed the sessions and their skills

have definitely improved.

Off-season fitness training with Michael Delaney was yet again a hit. His weekly sessions since the end of the 2018 session to March 2019 have kept the older players in form and

physically challenged so they are ready to take the courts in 2019.

We are now commencing weekly team training. Teams have been announced and coaches appointed. We have x2 U9 & U13 teams, x3 U11 teams and x1 U15 & U17 teams.

TEAMS ARE NOT AT CAPACITY, SO ANY CHILD WHO WISHESTO PLAY CAN STILL DO SO.

Wandong/Heathcote Junction And so we say farewell to summer. February was generally very warm, although the bureau states that thirteen days of the month were below 30⁰ and unusual in their statistics.

Rainfall at 7 mls for the month was extremely low but better than the previous year at 5 mls. Indications appear to be that March will continue to be hot while we await decent rain to refresh the ground and house tanks.

Flicking cigarette butt from car window a severe fire danger and environmental risk: EPA, fire and rescue services say.

With North East Victoria’s fire danger period projected to continue into May, EPA, Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade are calling for cigarette butt litterers to check their habit, and for

members of the community to report this kind of littering. Given that most human-cause fire incidents in Victoria are caused by lit cigarette butts, the potential cost to the community and environment is extreme. “EPA counts on members of the public to report people who flick their butts out of car windows,” said EPA North East Region Manager Emma Knights. “Flicking lit cigarettes out your car window is a serious fire hazard, as recent fire tragedies across our state have shown. “And cigarette butt litter pollutes our roadsides and chokes our waterways,” Ms Knights said. The CFA regularly attends to fires caused by cigarettes, and some of Victoria’s worst bushfire tragedies were sparked by cigarette butt litter. CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington said roadside fires pose a “significant danger to drivers not only from smoke, but flames or falling burning trees or branches, and there’s high potential for tragic consequences.” Mr Warrington said more than half of Victorian bushfires are deliberately lit or caused by reckless behaviour. “One of the most common causes is inappropriately disposing of cigarette butts. “Recklessly caused fires are often viewed by the community as accidental, but in reality, the potential for injury, loss of life, property damage and drain on resources is the same as that caused by arson.” Mr Warrington said. MFB Chief Officer Dan Stephens said that firefighters respond to more than 10 fires caused by carelessly discarded smoking materials every month across the Melbourne metropolitan district alone. Last financial year, EPA handed out over $5 million in fines to more than 11,000 Victorians for discarding litter, mostly cigarette butts, from their vehicles. EPA litter fines range from $322 for a small piece of rubbish or unlit cigarette up to $645 for a lit cigarette. People can report littering via EPA’s website, through its smartphone litter app, or by calling 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842).

Hi from the WHJSC Committee, What’s happening at the Reserve?

The Month of March is continuing to be hot and dry conditions and.now entering our Autumn weather will come unseasonal Storms, so please be aware when walking along the G’Day trail, our creek through the Reserve can flood and our friendly local snakes are still about. This also includes sightings of wombats, so please be vigilant when walking through the Reserve.

It’s good to see more of our locals heading and utilizing our great recreational facility down at the Reserve, so please drive carefully down in to the carparks as lots of kids will be about. When parking down in the Stadium carpark, please don’t park in front of the storage areas of the User groups, these areas are signed keep clear.

Fair Play Code - Be Fair Play Fair – It’s Your Code All our Sporting Clubs at the Reserve must comply: Sport and Recreation Victoria has implemented the Fair Play Code to encourage appropriate standards of behaviour to enable every Victorian to be involved in sport and recreation that is safe, welcoming and inclusive. The Fair Play Code sends a loud and clear message that bad behaviour, violence, cheating, and intimidation has no place in sport and recreation in Victoria. At the heart of the Fair Play Code are the five core values that will encourage fair play for all:

Integrity Respect Responsibility Fairness Safety

These values apply to everyone involved in sport and recreation in Victoria, no matter what, For further information, resources and training for clubs please follow the below links. If you suspect any breach, contact your local council, sporting club or police Sport and Recreation Victoria website <www.sport.vic.gov.au> https://www.playbytherules.net.au/

Victorian Child Safety Standards: All our Groups at the Reserve must Comply: From 1 January 2017, the Victorian Child Safety Standards will apply to sporting organisations that operate and provide sporting services to children within Victoria (including National Sporting Organisations). There are seven different requirements which make up the standards, and with which sports will be required to comply. The standards relate to child protection within your organisation and include requirements to have practices, procedures and policies in place. In the lead up to implementation, sporting organisations should now be starting to look at reviewing their compliance with the standards and considering if the culture and environment within their organisation is supportive and protective of children. Wandong Primary School We have continued the fantastic start to term one, with students showing focus and enthusiasm towards their learning. Each classroom has a wonderfully warm atmosphere and it is great to see teachers and students building positive relationships and dedicated learning communities.

In February, some highlights were:

Black Saturday Memorial Service: We held our 10th anniversary commemoration service, in memory of the Black Saturday Bushfires of 2009. The event allowed us to reflect on the impact of the fires, but also to recognise the growth and unity which came in the days and weeks after. We were honoured to hear from those who led, supported and contributed to the recovery efforts after Black Saturday and the inspiring messages of resilience, commitment and friendship that have led our school and community forward. Many members of our school community painted or created artworks to share their experiences and these were displayed in a gallery overlooking the service. Parents, students and staff members also created a colourful riverbed of rocks, with memories and messages of gratitude which we hope to establish perma-nently within our school grounds.

District Swimming Carnival: Our students faced some really tough opposition but all did extremely well. A special congratulations to our six students who will go through to the next round of competition.

University of Melbourne Network of Schools (UMNOS): Late last year, as part of the State Government’s Black Saturday 10 year assistance packages, we put in an application to be part of the UMNOS and are excited that we have been accepted into this sought after program for the next two years. As part of the program, we will have access to world-class professional development and resources, and will work with other schools on an area of focus to achieve the best possible learning outcomes for our students.

Our new library: It is fantastic that work is underway on the block on our new library. The site has been cleared and earthworks have started to level the site. The new library is due to be completed by the end of November (hopefully sooner) and will serve our students well for years to come- very exciting!

Parent Information Sharing Session: We had a great response to our Parent Information Sharing Session two weeks ago. We have received such positive feedback from teachers and families about the value of the evening and students were most excited to welcome family members into the school to meet their 2019 teachers!

School Captain Speeches: Last week our grade six students presented speeches to their teachers and peers, to apply for the position of School Captain and School Vice-Captain. All students are to be commended on the quality of their presentations which demonstrated great leadership potential, insight and constructive ideas to support our school community. Many students pushed themselves well outside of their comfort zone in order to speak in front of the 100+ people present! After this we shortlisted candidates and held our interviews. At this week’s assembly we will announce our new leaders.

I look forward to updating you next month, Dave Warren

AROUND THE WORLD WITH NONI - EPISODE 35

Limerick and Galway

Tuesday 11 August 2015 Getting ready for breakfast, surprise, surprise on the news it said Scotland has just had the most rain from May to August with over 480 millimetres, for many, many, many years. Yes, we already knew that. We had a great drive to Limerick. Unfortunately getting into Limerick was a real test. It seems the Irish have a very good sense of humour. The maps don't match the roads. Now Vaughan doesn't like being lost. We went round and round trying to find either a name of a road or number. We certainly had a very comprehensive tour of Limerick. Vaughan didn't appreciate my giggles. Eventually, we found a road name I could locate on the map and we got onto the right road. Wonderful. I certainly didn't look forward to a night in the car!!! After lunch we walked into a now very familiar city. Over the river Shannon, around some pretty shops and pubs. Flowers blooming everywhere in pots. We visited St. Mary's Cathedral. Founded in the 12th century, it is the oldest building in Limerick. Grey stone and plain but beautiful. The grave yard dates back centuries. On to King John's Castle. The building started in 1212. By the 1500's it was a home for quite a large city. Now an impressive visitors must do, we climbed all over this old castle ruin. Excavations are revealing the foundations and above ground there are turrets to climb and boy what a view. Like Stirling Castle, people dressed in period costume were around to tell their tales. Fantastic audio/visual displays brought the history to life. Think I am getting over turrets and stairs. Ha, ha. We walked along the river back to our hotel. Another busy day.

Wednesday 12 August 2015 We left Limerick. Last night at dinner Vaughan said I had to write a limerick. So here is the result.

Vaughan and I went to Limerick, We soon found we were in the thick of it. Up and down, Round and around. Very quickly we found we were over it!

We had a good trip up to near Crusheen where we were diverted off on to a smaller road. This proved to be a great little detour. Taking us through villages that were not on our map. We came out at Gort and very quickly came to the outskirts of Galway. IPad at the ready for a reasonably straight forward trip past the city to the beachside at Salthill. Like yesterday the map wasn't quite as the roads were. Not as bad though. We certainly went in the right direction but the road just seemed to disappear and we found ourselves on the beach road a few miles before we were due to meet it. Don't laugh, it is not me, it is the jolly map!!! Another thing we have noticed going around Ireland. On the roads, obviously there has been people die in car accidents. Memorials are now set up there. Not a little wooden cross or flowers tied to a post but proper stone memorials. Beautifully engraved etc. just as you would see in a cemetery. We even witnessed a young woman who walked passed one, cross herself. Very thought provoking and grounding.

Thursday 13 August 2015 We went on a tour of Connemara and Cong. We were collected at our B&B and collected people along the way. We went through the centre of Galway. Here Vaughan and I realised how our avoiding the city was the best thing to do. Galway City centre is a mass of little, usually one way streets. Taller old build-ing gave it a darkness, making it a bit gloomy. To say the streets were crowded is an understatement. A bumper to bumper standstill. After over an hour of sorting our tour finally started. Moving out of the city we saw wonderful country again. Lots of bog areas, sheep and views of rolling hills. According to our guide there have been many films made around these parts over the last fifty/ sixty years. We saw many areas used for filming. Moving through the area we also came upon the "killer sheep". No fences by the roads, so yes, the sheep wander on to the road. The driver yells out, "mint jelly" and the sheep get off the road quickly!!! We passed the Killary Fjord. It is the only one in Ireland. Beautiful. But the locals also farm mussels and salmon in the still waters. Arriving at Kylemore Abbey and Gardens for our two hour visit. We had seen this walled garden on a TV garden show at home. It was everything and more. Everything from flowers, trees and veggies and so much more. Our only problem, not enough time to really see all. The Abbey was a 72 room mansion built in the 18 hundreds. It eventually went into disuse and at the start of WW1, a Benedictine Order from Ypres, in Belgium settled in it. They set to work cre-ating the gardens, then selling produce etc. to pay the mortgage. It is a very beautiful place but we could have done with more time. On to the Connemara area and stops at villages with cathedral ruins, streams and just lovely countryside. Wonderful tour.

THIS MONTH

Happy Autumn to you all from U3A Kilmore & District Inc. Sadly Summer is over; I hope you like Autumn; nothing can be done; it has arrived!

We held our AGM on 1st March. It was a successful meeting with only 1 committee position remaining available. The committee remains pretty much the same with only two very welcome new members. We were fortunate to have two guests from The Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) attend and following the meeting Leah Royle gave a very interesting and informative presentation. Hercompanion was Bianca Friend but Leah was the main presenter and her passion and dedication to wildlife conservation shone through her entire presentation. I cannot begin to relate all her presentation, but I will provide some of her information. Australia has the worst reputation in the world for the extinction of its mammals. One example is the Woylie, a bush tailed Bettong; in 2000 there were 225000; in 2012 there were less than 18000 on the planet. AWC wants to share their methods of conservation to influence changes to the management of all native parks, believing our unique flora and fauna will benefit. Over the past 20 years AWC has purchased 27 properties across Australia grossing 4.65 million hectares. They operate with 120 staff, 80% of whom operate in the field. Their properties and projects are situated in the Gulf of Carpentaria, The Kimberly, on the North shores of Lake Eyre, Cape York, some in N.S.W., S.A & W.A. It was interesting to learn that they have no current projects in Victoria because land is too expensive to buy here. Leah was particularly pleased to report the successes of AWC have led to them taking control of i) a government national park, ii) an area within the defence force control and finally it has been approached by one aboriginal managed park to assist them in the management of said park.

The two main causes of the destruction of our wildlife are feral animals and Fire. Fencing is an effective method to protect the ecology and aid in the elimination of feral animals from inside the fence. Fire also contributes to the loss of both flora and fauna. A raging Wildfire cannot be stopped nor con-trolled; it goes where the wind blows it, destroying everything in its path. AWC has proven that controlled burning early in the season reduces the risk of wildfires taking off. The reduction of flammable material available to a fire reduces the risk of it growing and growing into an uncontrollable monster.

Finally I want to describe just one comparison pair of the many photos Leah showed. The first photo showed a barren desolate scene of a dried up swamp area where the ground was cracked and dry, with a little patch of water showing in the far distance. There was no green showing anywhere. All up, it was an ugly photo. Leah then showed a photo taken at the same spot 4-5 years later and the difference bordered on the miraculous. The cracks were covered in water and streams of water could be tracked back into the distance where the original photo had shown a patch of water, and all around was green; Bushes and shrubs were in abundance. Now for the punch line AWC had done nothing in this area except Put a Fence Around It. As Leah demonstrated, our great land’s ecology (flora & fauna) will recover if we use wise human intervention to protect it from the depredations caused by human settlement: i.e. the introduced species allowed to roam and breed.
