Waratahs’ Luke Harder takes a mark in the match against Wanderers at Gardens Oval Picture: JUSTIN SANSON Wanderers in tough victory NTFL By GREY MORRIS We worked our way back to nullify the margin and come away with a win, which was good WANDERERS won a tough, no-nonsense NTFL match yesterday when they beat Waratahs by eight points at the Gardens Oval. The 14.11 (95) to 13.9 (87) win also meant that the Eag- les won the Foundation Cup for the eighth time in veteran Shane Thompson’s 150th game in his beloved blue and gold jumper. It all looked a lot different in the first term when Tahs kicked the first five goals of the match. Spearhead Luke Harder, Paddy Heenan and Tim Mos- quito ran rampant in the first 20 minutes as Tahs made light of their underdog tag. But the strength of Wan- derers at stoppages and poise of Marlon Motlop and Josh Cubillo when in possession of the ball wore Tahs down. The Eagles kicked eight of the next nine goals after Tahs’ bright start and looked in to- tal control when Motlop kick- ed a long goal at the start of the third term. But some undisciplined acts by the Eagles, where they gave free kicks away behind the play, let Tahs back into the game. Waratahs kicked five goals to two to grab a 10-point lead at the last change and seem- ingly all the momentum. ‘‘Waratahs set the standard at times which was a bit dis- appointing from our end,’’ Motlop said. ‘‘But we worked our way back to nullify the margin and come away with a win, which was good.’’ Motlop, who won the Foundation Medal for his club, has moved back to Ade- laide after three seasons in the WAFL with Swan Dis- tricts and Peel Thunder. Cubillo showed his import- ance to Wanderers with a bulldozing second half of foot- ball, highlighted by a superb goal when he broke through a pack in the last quarter. And returning Eagles, Bobby McCallum in the ruck and the Maningrida Marvel, Jerry Wilson, showed they will be better for the run. Harder, easily Tahs’ best on the day, said his side would gain a lot of confidence from the loss. ‘‘The pressure was pretty intense out there,’’ he said. ‘‘Wanderers are like St Marys and Nightcliff, there are a lot of class acts and older heads in their sides. ‘‘But our first and third quarters were very good.
