Message from the Director

/ 1 / WORCESTER ART MUSEUM | Annual Report 2015

My heartfelt thanks to all our donors, members, and friends who supported the museum in fiscal year 2015 (and will hopefully continue to do so) and who contributed to making the Worcester Art Museum a very special place!

Looking back on a year in lives touched and stories told, I am happy to report that nearly 100,000 visitors strolled past the

visiting Raphael, sipped coffee in the Stoddard Garden Court, played with costumes in Knights!, or met with friends to see a new photojournalism exhibit. For each, we know that the WAM experience gave them an additional sense of connection, just as their visit makes us relevant to the quality of life in the region.

Our staff and volunteers deftly crafted new connections in 2015, between pop culture and the ancient, between classic and modern. We surrounded each of these links with lively activities for all audiences, and saw tremendous response. The press found much to talk about at WAM, and our participation, in statewide initiatives in accessibility as well as local movements to create the Salisbury Cultural District, will strengthen our capacity to engage the city and make a difference, far beyond the artwork in our care.

The sky is the limit for what can happen at WAM, once we join forces with partners in the city and beyond. I challenge you to see yourself in our efforts, too. We have our eye on the twin prizes of relevance and sustainability, and we have the infrastructure and support that can take us much further than we have ever gone. My gratitude is to our donors, our Trustees, Corporators, and our staff for their ever-increasing passion for what we can do. Now more than ever, WAM is ready to help shape the future vibrancy of our city and the region.

Statement of Financial PositionA downturn in global markets, including a major market sell-off on August 24, 2015, just seven days before the close of our fiscal year, heavily affected the Museum’s Net Assets and Revenues for fiscal year 2015. Net Assets decreased by $6.6M (-5.6%) from $116.3M on August 31, 2014, to $109.8M on August 31, 2015.

Unrestricted operating revenue saw similar change: $8.4M in fiscal year 2015, vs. $12M in fiscal year 2014. Three elements impacted this area. First, the swing in investment return accounted for over $3M of that variance.

Second, in fiscal year 2015 there was a net loss on investments of $452K vs. a net gain on investments of $2.616M in fiscal year 2014. Finally, in 2014, the Museum was the beneficiary of a $1.5M bequest which – naturally! – was not replicated in 2015.

However, in 2015 there was an increase of over $765K in net assets released from restrictions,

particularly in support of Higgins to offset that generous one-time bequest. Despite these decreases, I am proud to report that there was an increase in unrestricted support from every corner, including individuals, corporations, foundations, and grants.

Their efforts created over $185K, which represents an increase of 16.25% year over year. Unrestricted operating expenses grew $238K (2.2%) from $10.7M in fiscal year 2014 to $10.9M in fiscal year 2015. This increase was modest considering the continuing work of the Higgins Integration and increased focus on creating a visitor-centric family focused culture along with other strategic plan objectives.

Going forward the Museum continues to focus on minimizing ongoing expenses while encouraging smart, strategic growth, and we look with gratitude on all our staff and supporters who make this work a success.
