WelcomeThere are so many positives about beinginvolved with the hospice. There is a satisfaction of knowing that we carry out care that is almost universally appreciated by our patients and their families. Then there is the pleasure of working with staff, trustees and volunteers. Everyone is so enthusiastic and dedicated to doing their very best and determined to make further improvements to offer an even better service.

The theme of continuous improvement is important to me. When I look back over almost 30 years hospice history, I congratulate those who created something so valuable from nothing. I am delighted to have played a part in building on the early years successes to the point where we can be proud today that we are a highly profes-sional organisation.

Readers can be assured that the pioneering spirit is still there. We are not resting on our laurels and will continue to strive to extend the quality and range of services on offer and to provide the necessary resources to support them.

Recent fundraising events I have attended include the magnificent Hospice Ball and the highly entertaining Colour Dash at Marl Pits. The reality is that a vast amount of effort goes into their planning and organisation and I have seen first hand how stressful it can be for those involved.

I am sure this is also the case with many independent events put on by our supporters across the Valley. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has put on an event to raise funds in someway. We are very grateful for all their efforts.

The same point might be made aboutrunning the hospice.

Being a trustee can sometimes be very demanding – there’s so much at stake. Why do we do it? It’s the satisfaction of knowing that we provide a valued service that has developed much over time. It gives us the energy to carry on, hopefully to even greater things.

I look forward to seeing some of you at hospice events over the forthcoming months.

Geoff Summers,Chairman.

Introducing...

Nicola joined us earlier in the year and brings with her a wealth of experience gained in her Nursing Career, within the NHS, spanning 20 years. Suffice to say she brings strong clinical and leadership skills to the role.

Having lived in the Rossendale Valley throughout her life, Nicola is delighted tohave been given the opportunity to enhance the care developed and delivered at the Hospice and within her local community.

Nicola and her team are also going to be out in the community giving local people the chance to find out more about the hospice and answer their questions about our services.

Nicola Whittaker

Our new Clinical Services Manager Nicola Whittaker.

You would be surprised how far people travel to get to us, not forgetting our local customers who pick up real bargains from our great range of stock, which is updated on a regular basis, thanks to the support of the community who donate some great stuff to us, and have done since we opened.

Did you ever wonder what happens totransform donations and our window displays...

Shop til you drop!We are incredibly proud of our 3 shops in Rawtenstall,Haslingden and Bacup, which over the past 4 years havegone from strength to strength.

Here’s how…..Every item donated is checked carefully to make sure it is in great condition and saleable.

Then out comes the steamer and within minutes every crease has disappeared.Next it’s price time and we have really knowledgeable staff and volunteers who know how much things cost new, to beable to label something with a fair and reasonable price.

(We even get lots of donations of items still with the original price tag on...!)

If you are able to, we could really do with some help!

All this goes on behind the scenes; most people aren’t even aware of the process that takes a donation from bag to shopfloor – apart from the staff and volunteers who beaver away behind the scenes to bring our customers some tip top bargains!

It’s really interesting seeing stock as it comes in and it’s a job that never stops, so if you havean hour or two to spare and can help us within our shops we’d be really grateful......in fact we’d love to hear from you asap!!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP?

Did you know that you can also support us by shopping in the Co-op? All you have to do is pay a £1 to join their membership scheme.

When you purchase Co-op products & services you receive 5% cash back to spend on further purchases and a further 1% is allocated to the charity of your choice.

Rachel Hall, Area Manager, told us “shoppers can become a member of their Co-op.

They have an opportunity to make a difference simply by using their membershipcard when they shop with us, this will then raise much needed funds for charities who contribute to improve local life.”

So next time you are in the Co-op in Haslingden & Waterfoot please enquire about the membership scheme.

Did you know?

You might be really creative and love to get involved in our window displays…

You might have a real eye for vintage or high end fashion; you might simply want to lend a helping hand to keep our shops well stocked and looking fab, which in turn raises money to pay for the service we provide, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

We need VolunteerDRIVERS: To collect stock from our 3 shops (Rawtenstall, Haslingden and Bacup) to return to the storage unit – Saturday’s for a couple of hours.

WINDOW DRESSERS: Have you got an eye for fashion and design? Come and share your talents with us!

ART & CRAFT FANS: Do you enjoy crafting? We have some fabulous Art & Craft materials which have been donated to us, just waiting to be transformed into things we could sell in our shops!

Give it a go; if you’re not sure speak to Caren Cookson Shops Manager, come and see what it’s all about, we really need more volunteers in our shops.

Losing a loved one is one of the most painful experiences we’ll ever go through. It’s hard enough to deal with as an adult, and for children, experiencing a bereavement can be even more difficult to understand.

Death is a difficult concept to explain to children and just like we adults, there is noright or wrong way to grieve. Everyone deals with it in their own time, at their own pace.

It is really important to encourage conversations and for emotions to be released, particularly when adult members of the family are grieving at the same time.

You might not know that we can help and offer bereavement counselling to children as well as adults.

We have recently been awarded a grant from Rossendale Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Forum Grant which has

enabled our bereavement counselling service to buy much-needed resources for working with children and young people.

The team are very grateful to now have new, current materials relevant to the individual child or young person to work with in counselling sessions.

Pictures and words which are easilyunderstood are a great trigger forconversation and have proven really successful for many children and young people in the area.

Many people say ‘It takes a special person to provide hospice care’. Denise & Julie can tell you about the difficultjourney of dealing with a terminalillness, speak of the many patients and families that stick in their hearts and minds and tell you how the power of human touch can be vital for those they support. They can tell you this and more, but what does the Hospice at Home team do?

They start their 12 hour shift at 9 am and arrive for their first visit. The team make sure their patients are comfortable, pain free and feel good about themselves. “It’s all about making sure their quality of life is as good as possible” says Julie.

Every day and every visit is different and each patient needs to be assessed before giving care. We answer some of the most difficult questions, which requires us torespond respectfully and with empathy.

We can be assisting patients with bed baths or into showers to help them feel refreshed. It might also be as simple as making them a nice cup of tea.

We are also there for their carers and wider family who come together to support the patient.

In the afternoon we are back out in the community; checking in on the patients wesaw in the morning to make sure they are settled and comfortable. At this point it will be checking and monitoring their pain control and making positional changes.

“It’s all about making sure patients are clean, dry and comfortable to see them through the night.” says Denise.

We build a rapport with each patient so we can establish trust from the outset. Some patients call us ‘part of their family’ as we have entered their lives at such a difficult and emotional time – it puts youin the centre of it too.

“It’s a hugely rewarding job knowing that youhave played a small part in enhancing their quality of life in the last few weeks. It makes every moment we give and everything we do worthwhile” says Denise.

If you know of someone who would benefit from the Hospice services please contact the Hospice at Home team on 01706 253633.

Rossendale Hospice’s Annual ball was a spectacularaffair showcasing aerial acts, fire eaters and stilt walkers, which was enjoyed by more than 270 guests who helped raise a magnificent £35,000!

Pupils from thirty two schools have supported Rossendale Hospice’s annual ‘Inter-School Penny Challenge’ raising £4,375!

Each school had six weeks to fill their boxes with all the pennies they could. It is the fourth consecutive year that Haslingden High has won the high school category with Helmshore primary regaining the trophy for the primary school category. The winning nursery/pre-school was a new winner, Little Stars pre-school. Each winner receives the challenge trophy for twelve months and all

participating schools receive a certificate of appreciation.

In addition, the challenge would not be possible without the support of our volunteers who deliver and collect the boxes to the schools and count all the pennies received – a mammoth task over a few days. We’d also like to thank Farrow and Farrow Estate & Letting Agents for sponsoring our boxes and Natwest Bank for their involvement and support too.

The Colour Dash held at Marl Pits Leisure Centre attracted almost 550 participants and has raised over £20,000 for the Hospice. Keen runners to gentle walkers, all dressed in white, adorned with rainbow wigs, lei garlands and multi-coloured sunglasses followed a 4-kilometre route, passing through six colour stations where colour dashers were covered with powdered paint that created the ultimate rainbow effect.

The colour stations were generously sponsored by local businesses; Keenans Estate Agents, Woodcock, Haworth and Nuttall Solicitors and Bigtank Productions.

The event attracted groups of friends, familymembers and teams of colleagues. A team of twenty ladies who called themselves ‘The Real Lancashire Housewives’ dressed in pink tutus took part and collectively have raised over £2,500 in sponsorship. Our local MP Jake Berry also joined in the fun with this team and wore a tutu!

Jeanna Hilton and 18 of her family members took part in memory of their mother-in-lawBarbara Hilton, who was cared for by the Hospice at Home nurses earlier this year. Jeanna and her family organised an event after the Colour Dash, which took place at the Red Lion pub in New-church and raised £1,560.

Woodcocks Howarth & Nuttall Solicitors’ charitygolf day has raised £6,170 for the Hospice, which adds to the grand total of £47,000 raised over the last ten years.

The day saw nineteen teams tee off at Rossendale Golf Club. Handlesbanken won the competition while golfers from Barclays, Peel group, Moore & Smalley, Best Supportive Tenancies and Lancashire Trade Frames were all treated to dry weather and picturesque views of the surrounding Pennines as they completed the 18 hole course.

I WOULD LIKE TO HELP ROSSENDALE HOSPICE

We are delighted to announce that Rosso Bus decided to repaint one of their buses and feature Rossendale Hospice in the design. The bus will shortly go out into the community and help raise awareness of the Hospice.

The panels inside the bus will give more information about the different hospice services available.

Brendan O’Reilly, Commercial & MarketingDirector of Rosso Bus said “I was thinking

about how I could support the local hospice and realised I can help by raising awareness. We decided that a bus would be a perfect way to get this message out into the community.”

Putting Hospice awareness in the community

The bus will tour the streets for at least five years. This is an amazing opportunity to make more people aware of the services. It is a great gift in kind to the Hospice.

We would like to thank the following for their support; • Ted Robbins • Alder Grange School • LAF Media Productions • ‘Dance Like Nobody’s Watching’ •

Rossendale Rotary Club • JJO Plc • HD Signology • Beta Group • Rossendale & Pendle Mountain Rescue • Rossendale Rugby Club • Rossendale Self Storage • Tricketts Insurance Brokers • Joshua Warwick •

Bradley Jake • Rossendale Leisure Trust • and many more.
