Activity 1 - Assemblies and PresentationAssemblies are a great way to raise the whole school’s awareness of the stigma associated with mental ill-health and learning disabilities. Assemblies could be held by a staff member, an invited guest or even a group of children. You can use the presentation and video clips in this pack as a basis for the assembly.

Guide to using the presentationThe CD-ROM included in this pack includes a presentation for use on interactive whiteboards, along with some video footage of young people talking about how discriminatory words make them feel. The presentation includes explanatory notes for use by teachers.

The presentation includes slides on:

Slide 1 - Introduction

Slide 2 - What is mental ill-health?

Slide 3 - What is a learning disability?

Slide 4 - What is stigma?

Slide 5 - What names are bad?

Slide 6 - What names are good?

Slide 7 - How would you feel?

Slide 8 - We are all different

Activity 2 – Sticks and StonesThe aimTo get the children to understand that words can also hurt people’s feelings.

What you needPercussion instruments, if available.

How to do itGive small groups each a percussion instrument to play.

Teach the group the familiar rhyme with a twist:

“ Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can also hurt me.”

Create a song or tune for the rhyme with the group and ask each small group to take a turn at singing and playing their instruments.

Extension to this activityAsk the children to create their own short poem, song or rap which incorporates the Sticks and Stones rhyme.

Activity 3 - Bad Words SearchThe aimTo make the children aware of the discriminatory words that are sometimes used to describe people with mental ill-health and learning disabilities. The word search encourages children to cross out these words.

What you needStigma word search sheet (see the activity resources contained in this pack and on the CD-ROM) and pens.

How long it takes10 minutes.

How to do itGive everyone a copy of the stigma word search (activity resources contained in this pack and on the CD-ROM) and pens. Ask the children to identify the words associated with mental ill-health and learning disability stigma and when they have found them to cross them out with their pen.

Activity 4 - Human BingoThe aimTo get the group moving around, talking to each other and to find out what they know about stigma and discrimination. This activity also shows that we are all different in some way and that people should not be discriminated against because of this.

What you needHuman bingo sheets (see the activity resources contained in this pack and on the CD-ROM) and pens.

How long it takes10 minutes.

How to do itGive everyone a copy of the bingo sheet and a pen. Ask the children to fill in each box by talking to their peers. The first person to fill in all the boxes should shout ‘bingo’!

Activity ResourcesTitle: Activity 4 - Human Bingo. Location: Activity Resources.

Activity 5 - Right or Wrong? The aimTo get the children to identify words that are right and wrong.

What you needRight or wrong sheets (see the activity resources contained in this pack and on the CD-ROM) and pens.

How long it takes15 minutes.

How to do itGive everyone a right or wrong sheet and a pen. Ask the children to draw a smiling face next to the words that are right and a sad face next to the ones that are wrong (or discriminatory).

Activity 7 - Leave the RoomThe aimTo get the children to carry out a social experiment. The children understand how it feels to be left out or excluded; this can then be linked to the feelings that people who are stigmatised feel because of their mental ill-health or learning disability.

How long it takes10 minutes.

How to do itAsk for a volunteer or a group of volunteers who will leave the room. Meanwhile, talk with the remaining children about how that person may be feeling to be left out of the discussion – what feelings might this invoke, what could they be thinking? After some discussion, ask the volunteer to re-join the group. Ask the volunteer how they felt to be excluded from the group. Link the feelings discussed with the way people experiencing stigma or discrimination may feel.

Activity 8 – DramaThe aimTo get the children to work together to develop a short play about stigma – to educate others on how it feels to be discriminated against.

How long it takes20 minutes.

How to do itSplit the group into smaller groups. Ask the children in each group to develop a short play to show why stigma and discrimination because of mental ill-health or a learning disability is bad. One person could play someone being stigmatised, another could play someone using discriminatory words and another could be a friend or teacher saying why it is wrong.

Extension to this activityEncourage the children to show their short plays to a school assembly – to show others what they have learned and why stigma is bad.

Activity 9 - Making a Pledge The aimTo get the children to make a pledge or promise that they will not use words that are discriminatory.

What you needPledge form (see the activity resources contained in this pack and on the CD-ROM) and pens.

How long it takes10 minutes.

How to do itGive everyone a pledge form and a pen. Explain to the group why using bad words is wrong and hurtful to others – discuss some of the words that could be seen to be discriminatory.Ask them to complete the pledge form. For younger children askthem to draw a smiley face or write their initials.

Extension 1 to this activityAsk the children to design their own pledge forms to sign and ask others to sign too. This could be run as a competition for the best design.

You can submit any designs to:

Communications, North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Hollins Park House, Hollins Park, Hollins Lane, Winwick, Warrington WA2 8WA

You will be able to see your school’s pledge form designs on our website www.stampoutstigma.co.uk.

Extension 2 to this activityYou could ask the children to design their own pledge form using the computer – E

using any drawing or design software that you may have.

You can submit designs via email to [email protected].

You will be able to see your school’s pledge form designs on our website www.stampoutstigma.co.uk.

Extension 3 to this activityYou have been provided with a number of Sticks and Stones wrist bands with this pack. You could run a competition in the class to encourage the children to collect pledges – for every five or ten pledges they collect they can trade them in for a wrist band.
