SpeedlimitsBuses and Parking major problem for child care centres

By Aaron Meredith

Speeding buses and a lack of parking are two of the problems facing teachers, parents and children in early childhood centres in Wainuiomata.

There is little to no road signs outside of many centres in the valley warning drivers to slow down.

Jack and Jill Kindergarten has been fi ghting with New Zealand Buses for many years, fi nally asking Hutt South MP Trevor

Mallard for help.It is only since he got involved

the bus company has responded. The kindergarten has two signs

warning drivers of the centre, but these were only put up after a child was hit by a car a few years back.

“It is only a matter of time before someone gets hit again.” says head teacher Chris Moses.

“I understand the drivers are on a schedule, but they are going so fast.”

By Aaron Meredith

The Wainuiomata Summer Pools offi cially opened at the weekend, signalling warmer weather is well and truly on the way.

Last Saturday close to 800 locals took advantage of the pool’s annual open day and as part of the celebration, entry was free.

As always the hydro slide proved to be a popular attrac-tion, with children and adults alike taking the fast ride which weaves its way through the surrounding native bush.

Continued from page 1 Club chairman, Taz Buchanan, said it was

a “privilege” to be hosting the tournament. “We didn’t expect it to be here. It gives

us a level of confi dence. It’s good for the community.

“It will remind New Zealand that Wainui is a powerhouse in New Zealand rugby league,” he said.

Kaumatua Jackie Awa agreed and said it would remind New Zealand of Wainuio-mata’s long standing presence and strength in the sport.

He said hosting the tournament would be an “important historical event” and important for younger Maori boys in the community.

“It gives them confi dence and a chance to showcase their talent,” Jackie said.

Taz and Jackie said they hoped to focus on the younger members of the club in the tournament.

In their preparations for the upcoming tournament club secretary/treasurer Kylee Matenga said the club’s main focus was to get the backing and sponsorship from local businesses.

She said it would be a good chance to showcase themselves to the many people coming from across the country to watch

the tournament.Taz estimated nearly 40 league teams could

end up in Wainuiomata for the tournament.“It will be good for the economy,” said

Julie Paterson and Clive’s Chemist Pharmacy celebrated their tin anniversary last week.

On May 5, the Clive’s team thanked Julie for her ten years of work.

She fi rst began at the ‘Happy Chemist’ in 2006.

The pharmacy announced the anniversary on Facebook, thanking and congratulating Julie.

The pharmacy described her as “one exceptional lady; she’s kind, compassion-ate, and genuinely one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet”.

While serving the community, Julie has become friends with many local residents, a “perk of the job”.

Julie recalled, “I think my favourite memory was serving that first person, and still serving them today, having them continue to come in, and getting to know them.”

She said the people at Clive’s Chemist are its biggest virtue.

“The thing I enjoy most is coming into work with a great bunch of staff, a great boss, and working with all the good people of Wainui.”

Clive’s Chemist thanked Julie for her dedicated service with a trip to Queenstown for her and her husband.

A local man received a special award at the end of last month.

Frank Jones received the French Legion of Honour and became a Chevalier on April 27 for his participation at Normandy during WWII.

The Legion of Honour is the highest French order for military and civil merits.

On the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landings in 2014, the French president Francois Holland, announced all surviving D-Day veterans would be presented with the

French Legion of Honour as tribute to their work in France.

Mr Jones was one of seven English born New Zealand men who were given the award at a “very nice” cer-emony at the French Embassy a fortnight ago.

“It was fantastic. Very, very nice. Low keyed with no pomp.”

Mr Jones said he was “de-lighted” to receive the award 73 years after the landings took place.

“I’m very humbled,” he said. He said he still regularly

caught up with the other men

who received the Legion of Honour.

Mr Jones sa id he was 16-years-old when he signed up for the Navy, and was 17-and-a half-years-old when the Normandy Landings took place.

“Normandy was rough and quite a number of my friends are still there. War is not good. Nobody really wins,” he said.

Last week’s article on Ocean Star stated the takeaway store was located on North Street. Ocean Star’s correct address is 35 Norfolk Street. In the Menz Shed article it was published that the club was started by the Pencarrow Lions when in fact it was by the Riddiford Lions. Community win but it’s not over yetBy Emma McAuliff e

Locals have spoken – they want to put a stop to the prospect of new liquor stores opening their doors in Wai-nuiomata.

A public meeting was held at the Wainuiomata Community Hall on Monday, to discuss the future of liquor stores in

the valley and the possibil-ity of the Hutt City Council putting a local alcohol policy (LAP) into place.

This comes after news broke late last month that the coun-cil had received an application to open a new liquor store on The Strand.

However, following public backlash, those behind the

Sisi Tuala- Le’afa, Trevor Mallard and Keri Brown celebrate the community win with a cup of tea outside where the bottle store would have been.

proposed liquor store de-cided to pull the plug on their proposal.

Council has said it would now be meeting on May 24 to discuss the LAP which would set trading hours of on and off licences around the Hutt Valley.

It would also give the op-portunity for communities to have a cap on how many on and off licences could be in their area.

Hutt South MP, Trevor Mallard, led the commu-nity’s movement against the store and said he had a “frank discussion” with the owners who then backed out.

He said he would like to see a “sinking lid” policy for Wainuiomata.

This would mean no more off or on license outlets for Wainuiomata and if a current outlet was to close it would not be replaced.

The LAP has been in discussion since 2013 and

many of those at Monday’s meeting said they wanted to see tighter restrictions on the sale of alcohol in Wainuiomata.

Locals also criticised the Wainuiomata Community Board for not supporting a LAP when it was initially considered three years ago.

Hutt City Councillor Campbell Barry, who was on the Board at the time, admitted members had “dropped the ball”.

However, he defended the Board’s decision and said at the time members did not want to prevent another supermarket from replacing New World after it had shut down.

Other issues raised in-cluded alcohol related youth issues and violence issues.

Do you think their needs to be tighter restrictions on the sale of alcohol in Wainuiomata? Send us an email at [email protected]

A group of Wainuiomata elders may fi nd themselves on the pages of glossy maga-zines after taking part in a photoshoot for Enliven’s Woburn Home and Apartments.

The Wainuiomata locals attend the home’s day programme, which has been set up to support elders living in their own homes or with family to get out of the house, to keep active and to socialise with others at a similar stage of life.

Woburn Home manager Stewart Clark explains Enliven, which is part of Pres-byterian Support Central, features “real people” in the marketing wherever possible.

“We asked residents and day guest programme attendees if they wanted to be models for the day and many put their hands up to help. It’s great because it means the photos refl ect real life and real people at Woburn.”

The photographer, Mike Heydon from Jet Productions, captured what a typical day at Woburn Home is like, says Stewart.

“It was a busy day, like any other at our home, with plenty going on,” Stewart explains.

The day included visits from family and friends, card games, bowls, gardening, music, soup making and much more.

“The photoshoot was very exciting because it’s something we don’t do often, so it was a great way for residents to be involved with the promotion of their home,” says Stewart.

“The photos will truly represent what a typical day is like here, and the residents, day guests and their families will get great photos to cherish.”

Woburn Home and Apartments is operated by Enliven, part of the not-for-profi t organisation Presbyterian Support Central, and offers a full continuum of car. This includes independent retirement living, rest home, hospital and dementia care, short-term respite and health recov-ery care, and a popular day programme. Woburn Home is situated at 57 Wai-iti Crescent in Lower Hutt.

For more information about Woburn Home call 0508 365383 (that’s 0508 ENLIVEN) or visit www.enlivencentral.org.nz.

Residents will have the chance to colour in the streets next weekend thanks to a competition set up by Hutt City Councillor Campbell Barry and Community Board member Josh Briggs.

The fi rst Chalk Wainuiomata Competi-tion will be held next Sunday, May 15 on Petrie Street to light Wainuiomata up with creative chalk creations.

Campbell said he and Josh had come up with the all age’s event to get neigh-bours together and to “utilise areas in our community not usually seen as an asset”.

“It’s something really special [and] unique across the country,” Campbell said.

“It’s a chance for neighbours to make

friends and get some colour into the neighbourhood,” Josh added.

Campbell said the two were aiming to host the event Wainuiomata wide so were looking for “street champions” to be a host on their own streets.

“[A street champion is] anyone who wants to be the lead person in their street [and] encourage their neighbours and friends.”

He said judges would be making trips across Wainuiomata to see particularly special creations and prizes would be awarded to the best chalk scenes.

For more information head to the “Chalk Wainuiomata Competition” event page on Facebook or email Campbell at [email protected]

Tihei Rangatahi will be celebrat-ing New Zealand Music Month with something special this year.

The youth group will be recording songs at the community centre for an album to be launched later in the month.

Tyna Keelan, one of the organisers at Tihei Rangatahi said he had a lot of youth with a lot of talent come through the doors and an album would celebrate this.

He said the album would also

celebrate Youth Week, which takes place from May 21 to 29.

“The album is going to be pretty special. It’s taonga for them,” Tyna said.

He said there would be a “celebra-tion for the community” album launch at the end of the month.

Tyna said the album launch would also be a chance to re-launch the ra-dio station at the community centre.

He said the opportunity to make music was important because it helped the youth express them-selves.

“When it’s on your terms you can charge everything into music.”

17-year-old budding artist, Waka Te Hira, will feature on the album.

He said music was a way to talk about his past.

“It’s a good way to get it all out,” Waka said.

New Zealand Music Month is held annually in May by the New Zealand Music Commission to cel-ebrate homegrown talent across the country. Do you celebrate New Zealand Music Month? Let us know at [email protected]

Time to say goodbye

Janice Denney will be leaving Wainuiomata “for good”

By Emma McAuliff e

Wainuiomata will be losing one of its favourite shop keep-ers this week.

Janice Denney, owner of Vil-lage Herbal and Health until it shut in 2014, will be returning to the United States on May 12 to spend more time with her family after 20 years of living in the valley.

She said she would miss Wai-nuiomata and its community a great deal and wished to say goodbye before she left.

“The only thing I won’t miss [about Wainuiomata] is the wind,” she said.

She said she had come to know a lot of people through her manning her shop and said she would miss the friendliness and warmth of the people.

“Even the people I don’t know were saying ‘it’s sad to see you go’. [Wainuiomata] is a strong community. It’s a proud community… It’s stunningly beautiful,” Janice said.

She said since she had been in Wainuiomata she had seen the

town grow “a lot more pride”.Although a fan of the commu-

nity, Janice said she would not be returning to New Zealand and would be spending her time in the States “sitting quietly”.

She said she had some advice for the community she had become so fond of.

“Travel. See the world and come back to Wainui to see how beautiful it is.” Do you have fond memo-ries of the Village Herbal and Health? Let us know at [email protected]

The younger members of the community have the opportunity to learn something new this Friday at the Wainuiomata Library.

To celebrate Sign Lan-guage week the library will be having a special visit from Deaf Aotearoa to teach children sign language as part of their weekly ‘Storytime’.

New Zealand Sign lan-guage week takes place from Monday May, 9 until Sunday, May 15 to celebrate and raise awareness of New Zealand’s deaf community and the language they use.

The Wainuiomata library had a preliminary sign language ‘Storytime’ last Friday.

Children and teens librar-ian, Alexia Herrera, taught children from Jack and Jill Early Learning Centre the signs for “Hello” and “I love you”.

She said she had a great response to the event and was looking forward to see-ing more faces this Friday.

Sign Language for children

Children from Jack and Jill Early Learning Centre practice their signing

‘Storytime’ runs in the Children’s section of the Wainuiomata Library every Friday from 10.30am.

LETTERS to the editor

Dear Ed, I have been a resident in Moohan St for an excess of 40 years. Part of the essentials of living in suburbia is the delivery of water to the dwelling. Wellington Pipelines Ltd

are currently introducing new water mains to our locality, which I suspect is quite a major challenge for any accomplished contractor. Continued vehicular access has been

made possible with the use of temporary traffi c lights, a sea of cones and barrier fencing. O.S.H. would be delighted. The workers appear to be very focussed on the project

and at the conclusion of each day, dual car-riageway is restored. All credit must be given to Wellington Pipelines Ltd.

Jacob PageSports talk with…

Here’s to you, Leicester City.Their maiden English Premier League football crown on Tuesday could well be the greatest sports story of 2016.That’s a lofty statement given the Rio Olympics are just around the corner but if an athlete wins gold having been ranked a 5000-1 outsider at the start of the season, then we may have a contest.Stories like this are not meant to happen in sport, yet alone the richest and most watched sporting league in the world.Leicester rank 17th out of 20 when it comes to money spent on players this season in the EPL.Their key striker Jamie Vardy was barely earning seven fi gures a year at the start of the season and now he’s a champion.

This is a feel good story, from a manager, in Claudio Ranieri, who bought his players pizza after their fi rst clean sheet of the season, to players who have been with the club when they weren’t even in the premier league. It’s the fi rst time since 1978 that a club has won its maiden EPL title.Leicester had to wait 132 years to achieve it.We, as Kiwis, are pre-conditioned to cheer for the underdog so this story should live long into the memory.Spare a thought for second placed Tot-tenham Hotspur who haven’t won a title since the 1960s. They have a skilled, young team and they’ll be odds on to go one better when the new season starts in three months time.

The best sports story of 2016?

By Emma McAuliff e

Wainuiomata Boxing Club had a successful beginning of the month with two wins at an annual Hastings tournament.

Raymond Seumanu, 15, and Aisea Lealea, 22, both won their rounds at the Hasting Giants Boxing Acad-emy tournament on April 30.

Aisea said the pair was pleased with their successes and came home with “funny little trophies”.

Both of them have been boxing

with the academy for years. Coach Craig Bennett said the club

took three boxers to the tournament but only two got matchings.

He said the club would be taking the pair to more tournaments trough out the year including the Manawatu champs and the Wellington champs.

Boxing brilliance

Wainuiomata hockey had a mixed week-end with a successful win and a disappoint-ing loss.

The Premier 3 team came away with an 11-0 win over Hutt on Saturday.

The win gave them another bonus point which has made them the leaders of the Premier 3 competition.

It also guaranteed the team a spot in the promotion/relegation games coming up in a fortnight.

If the team are successful in reaching the Premier 2 grade this year they will have moved through three grades in a little over

one season, an incredible journey for the club since reintroducing a women’s team last season.

The team will be playing in Kapiti for their fi nal grading round game this Saturday.

The reserve 3 team had an unfortunate loss in their grading semifi nal, losing to Northern 5-1.

The score did not refl ect the game as the team created many scoring opportunities and were unlucky to not have put more goals away.

The team will remain in the Reserve 3 grade for the season.
