By Emily ElliottThe Food Bank has more food in their

cupboards for Christmas after NZCU Baywide Wainuiomata donated a bin of food on Friday.

NZCU Baywide Wainuiomata set up a collection bin in their branch during

the month of October as part of a lower North Island initiative to help Communi-ties called CAN DO!

Team Leader Mani Malaeulu says the response from locals has been awesome.

“We went out and approached local businesses and our own members that

Mani Malaeulu presents the collection bin to Christine Phillips and food bank volunteers, Michael Harris and Penny Hargraves.

Food Bank receives donationcome into the branch.

“They’ve all been really supportive,” Mani says.

Mani says the Wainuiomata branch raised the most amount of food out of every branch that participated.

The collection was so successful that the branch is making it an annual event.

“We raised around 146 items. We’re looking to double that next year.

“Members of the community have said it’s a great cause to get behind,” Mani says.

Mani is grateful to Mayor Ray Wallace who has been helping the Food Bank for eight years, and Councillor Campbell Barry and Josh Briggs who helped to raise awareness through their Facebook profi les.

He is also thankful to many of the Queen Street businesses who donated regularly.

Wainuiomata Community Centre manager Christine Phillips appreciates the donation and says it means they can stay afl oat.

“It becomes increasingly diffi cult at the end of the year, so this is helping us to provide for people in need.

“It means kids can get a bit extra over Christ-mas,” Christine says.

Christine says that any families who are in need can come and get help.

“Don’t be too proud to get help.”

Continued from page 1“It does save lives, there’s no two ways

about it.“They can’t get down the Coast Road in

three minutes.”The group donated $20,000 to the Wel-

lington Free Ambulance for the equip-ment, as part of the Angela De Boer fund.

The fund was set up in 1987 to raise money for Angela, who needed a heart transplant in Australia.

She died before the transplant could take place so the group decided to put the money towards other people in Wainuio-mata who needed transplants.

This was later extended to organ trans-plants and equipment.

Robbie says the machines are a tribute to Angela.

“The money was raised here and it should be spent here.”

The club have been working on the idea for three years.

“It’s come to fruition now.” Another three heart defi brillators will be

installed in the central Wainuiomata area before Christmas.

Robbie says they want to be careful where

they put the equipment because of vandalism. They want to put one in the mall.“It’s an ideal spot.”He says they are self explanatory and

anybody can use them. Each unit has a code that must be entered

to access the machine. The code can be accessed by calling 111.

“They are guarded against minor vandal-ism,” Robbie says.

Ambulance tutor Corey Burrowes says they are very happy to be putting the equipment in Wainuiomata.

“Increasing the chances of life is what the defi bulators are doing.”

Cory says anyone could need CPR. “It’s not just the old people anymore. “The boxes are checked every three months. Cory says they plan to give training

because a lot of people can feel daunted by the machines.

“It’s pushing the button people get afraid of.”

By Emily ElliottA number of locals voiced that

Wainuiomata needs positive change, and have stepped up to do something about it.

Grow Wainuiomata is an initiative that focuses on what members of the community can offer to others, no matter what their skill.

The Hutt City Council is now back-ing the initiative, but Hutt City Council Environmental Sustainability Advisor, Sandy Beath-Croft, says Grow Wai-nuiomata is ultimately for the people of Wainui, by the people of Wainui.

“I want to support the people of Wainuiomata who wish to see positive change for Wainui.

“The vision is positive change, and under that comes planting, growing, and keeping Wainuiomata beautiful,” says Sandy.

Sandy says that Grow Wainuiomata encourages locals to do what they are passionate about.

“We want people of Wainuiomata to do something they’re passionate about, something that’s positive for the community,” Sandy says.

One way that Grow Wainuiomata aims to work is through community gardens.

“Gardens are currently located all over the place.

“We don’t just want it in one location, we want everyone to feel a part of it,” Sandy says.

Locals are able to weed gardens, plant seeds, make art and sculptures for in the gardens, or do other things to help.

“We need people are not scared to get dirty.”

Sandy believes that residents should be able to maintain gardens for a small price.

“I don’t want people to feel that they have to spend a lot of money to enhance their gardens,” she says.

Community local Stuart Forest is helping to organise Grow Wainuio-mata and believes that locals are the ones who will action the initiative.

Grow Wainuiomata sparks development

Mechanic Sean Herbert has three kids and is passionate about Grow Wainuiomata, and has helped Stuart Forest to develop the initiative that provides a future for children.

He says they have set up a charitable trust, and Grow Wainuiomata is registered in the charities commission.

“There is a current garden behind the Com-munity Centre that has been operated for two years,” he says.

“We’re helping empower people to help themselves.”

Stuart says they want to bring people into the gardens so that they can learn, and believes Grow Wainuiomata is not just for a certain group of people, but the whole community.

The current vision considers nine different areas in Wainuiomata that can be developed.

Stuart has says he is passionate about the initia-tive because it’s for the future of Wainuiomata.

“I have lived in Wainuiomata for ten years, and I have two sons, and I want to see a future for them.”

Stuart also aims to help at-risk children by providing learning and job opportunities.

“We want to give people who don’t have much help get into a pattern of things - get up,

have breakfast, get into the garden, and have a working routine.

“This is a starting point for kids to decide where to go and fi nd their feet,” Stuart says.

Stuart says they are hoping local businesses, schools, and churches will get behind the ini-tiative, either by providing land, eqiupment, or seeds and plants.

“We’re hoping that some people may have land or gardens that they will allow us to help maintain.”

Stuart and a team of people have been working on the idea for a few years, but now they are opening it up to local response and ideas.

“We’d like people with ideas to share and bring them together in one place, at one time, so we can see what Wainuiomata would like,” he says.

There will be a Grow Wainiuomata meeting at 7pm on Wednesday, November 20 at the Baptist Church.

All residents are invited to share their ideas and contribute to the development of Grow Wainuiomata.

By Rhiannon McConnell Young men previously struggling with school

and self confi dence have passed NCEA this year thanks to an early morning exercise and life skills programme.

Twenty-eight students received certifi cates from the Futures Programme at the break-up breakfast last week.

The programme, run by locals Bill Sharp and Heston Patea, aims to keep young men out of trouble and in school.

The boys get together twice a week at the college at 5am for breakfast, a training session, homework and a life skills lesson.

Heston Patea says the boys have achieved a lot this year.

“I’m just proud of the guys. “There have been some good things happening.”Heston says they have seen success this year as a

lot of their students are passing NCEA and heading to tertiary education.

“They seem to be making better choices,” he says.Bill, 73, is recovering from cancer, but he does not

let that stop him from helping. “There are a lot of guys like this who need guid-

ance.”

He has been volunteering in Wainuiomata for 47 years.

“We need to put something back into the com-munity.”

He says people often ask why they run the pro-gramme so early.

Bill knew a lot of the boys would be busy with sports on the weekends and after school so decided on the early morning time.

He says the early mornings prove to him the boys are committed.

He says one week they did not run the vans that usually pick the boys up.

He thought they would have to cancel the pro-gramme but the boys still came.

“Some of them left their house at 4o’clock and walked to get here.

“That was them telling me they were committed.” Bill says they aim to give new pathways to the

young men. They tried to keep the group to 20 boys but at their

height it reached 50. The programme has fi nished for the year but will

start up again when school does. Bill says next year will be even better. “I am always looking for something better.”

By Rhiannon McConnellA Wainuiomata woman says her husband

would be proud of the social housing built on the street named after him.

Noeline Colman visited Fraser-Colman

Avenue last week to see the new social housing development opened by Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith a few weeks ago.

Noeline, along with councillor Campbell Barry and Community Board member Josh

Social housing area named after local man

Councillor Campbell Barry, Noeline Colman, and Joshua Briggs with Ellie Briggs (2).

Briggs, were very impressed with the tidy homes that will house people with disabilities.

Noeline says her late husband would be absolutely over the moon.

“He was just so involved with peo-ple.”

Noeline says she was very impressed with the homes.

She thinks the level quality will make a big difference for the people living in them.

“They have got enough to cope with without having yuck places to live.”

Noeline says the houses take up space that was empty for a long time.

“They have taken four sections that weren’t being sold.”

The $1.2 million Accessible Proper-ties development received $480,000 of funding from the Government’s $139 million Social Housing Fund.

“These four new community social houses in Wainuiomata will provide good quality low-cost housing for ten-ants with disabilities and low-income families in need,” housing minister Dr

Nick Smith says. The two and three-bedroom brick

homes will house tenants with issues such as intellectual handicaps and physical disabilities.

The homes were developed with easy access and so people can live together but with relative independence.

They are close to transport and local shops.

Hutt City councillor Campbell Barry says he wants to see more of these homes being built in Wainuiomata.

“It’s great to see. “We have got quality homes for

people.” Community Board member Josh

Briggs agrees and says he is glad the social housing is integrated into the community.

“Having them in the community and supported by the community is really important.

“It’s something we should be prais-ing and celebrating.”

Futures Programme member Duch-aun Clarke, 15, has attended for two years.

“When I fi rst started I didn’t have many friends.”

He says he has now gained more friends and gets better marks at school.

“They boost me up every day. “I am getting quite high marks

because of this.” The programme was formerly spon-

sored by the district health board and known as Healthy Eating and Healthy Activity.

After sponsorship was cut and a few of the key leaders left, Heston and Bill stepped in to keep the programme running.

Bright future ahead

By Rhiannon McConnell Public speaking used to make Diane Ish-

erwood feel physically sick, but last week she received the highest individual award in Toastmasters - the Distinguished Toastmaster award.

“I know fi rsthand what Toastmasters has done for me,” she says.

In 1994, Diane joined for fi ve weeks and ran away physically sick.

“I couldn’t do it.” Ten years later she came back because her

career was stagnating. Diane has come a long way from the shy

woman who felt sick at the mention of public speaking.

She now regularly speaks in front of large groups and in 2004 she spoke in front of 300 people as the national Toastamsters treasurer.

“I felt really proud.” Diane has looked after 50 clubs and has even

started one at her workplace. She says she has learnt a lot about leadership

through being part of the group, “I just get in and do it. “I never thought I had any leadership skills.” Diane has started fi ve clubs and is a member

of seven. But her allegiance is to the Wainuiomata club.

She and her husband Neville started the Wainuiomata club together six years ago.

“It’s our hobby and what we enjoy,” she says. Her husband Neville says he joined Toastmas-

ters for his wife. “I joined Toastmasters to see more of my

wife.” Neville has started two clubs and is a member

of fi ve. “She’s two ahead of me at the moment,” he

jokes. Neville says he used to play sports but now

does Toastmasters instead.“It’s an ongoing personal development

programme. It’s addictive.” But Neville has not just learned to speak. “I’ve learnt to listen and I’ve also learnt to

shut up.”The Wainuiomata club has 23 members

ranging from a nineteen year old to someone in their 80s.

Diane has achieved the Distinguished Toast-master award 4 times in the last 9 years.

She currently holds the following District roles, area governor, overseeing four clubs, and assistant to the division governor for Training and Education –South and responsible for or-ganizing and running club leadership training.

Owner Clive Cannons says he was blown away by winning the excellence in retail and excellence in leadership awards.

He says he was not going to enter but decided to after being nominated.

“I wasn’t expecting to win at all.” Clive is well-known around Wainuio-

“I try to work really hard to promote a good experience when people shop here.”

The retail section focused on planning, fi nances, staff and management.

“It was a whole weekend of work,” Clive says.

The leadership section was based on personal vision, community involvement and staff development.

Clive says he was feeling nervous when his category was called.

now proudly displays in his chemist. “It’s a validation of what we do

and the way we do it.” Clive says the win is great for

Wainuiomata as well. Clive’s Chemist started in 1997

on Norfolk Street before moving to

Queen Street in 2000. In 2002 they moved to their cur-

Letters to the editorDear Ed, Well done to Wainuiomata resident

Mike Grigg and former long-time former resident Ngaire Lambourne for their efforts at the Local Government Commission meeting.

Both made excellent points to the Commissioners about the loss of the Hutt City Council’s legal status and the effect that would have on business development in Wainuiomata should a SuperCity be forced on us.

They both spoke extremely well,

appeared well versed in Local Gov-ernment law and emphasised to the Commissioners that a SuperCity is not wanted in the Hutt Valley.

Wainuiomata has much to lose under a SuperCity and I encourage residents to follow Mike & Ngaire’s example.

Congrats are in order Good healthDear Ed, It is great news that Arakura Kinder-

garten has got their gold Healthy Heart. I think it is so sad how many children

are obese these days because of food choices. Junk food is so cheap while eating healthy is hard.

More kindergartens should be promot-ing this type of eating and lifestyle.

Foundation students, Megan Rodden, Debbie Flanagan, Diana Wilson and Linda Judge catch up on old times.

Over 140 old pupils and former staff members registered for the Fernlea Jubilee last Friday.

A Meet and Greet was held in the school hall and most of those who registered turned up.

On arrival at the school on Friday evening those attending the jubilee were assisted to safely cross Lees Grove with Grace Elliott and Kayla Wilson on school patrol duty.

For many attending this brought back memories of their days on school patrol, however just as many lamented the fact that the old milk shed at the top of the drive had gone - school milk in the half pint bottles was a thing of the past.

During the Meet and Greet group photos were taken, and formalities were kept to a minimum giving those attending lots of time to share memories.

The 50th Jubilee cake, donated by the Wainui Cake Kitchen, was cut by Marian Park, one of the original foundation staff members at Fernlea, and Tracy Bognuda, the

hard working jubilee secretary. The hall was decorated by the jubilee sign

and jubilee quilt developed by Year 5 & 6 students as well as a photo display of all class photos over the last 50 years.

Lance Hotton, a former student at Fernlea and the owner of Fine Touch Catering, catered for all the events over the weekend and ensured all those attending were well watered and fed.

On Saturday afternoon all current students were invited to take part in races on the school grounds and a giant lolly scramble, before showing their parents and those at-tending the jubilee around their classrooms that had been decorated with aspects of the history of Fernlea over the last 50 years.

They then presented a short concert of songs, kapahaka and dancing for all the guests.

On Saturday evening a dinner was held at the Wainuiomata Rugby Club with music and entertainment provided by former students at Fernlea.

In 1958 Queen Street was a dusty and recently formed road, but within two years the building of shops had begun and it was not long before the entire west side of the street was a new shopping precinct.

Until then, local housewives had to make

the long journey, usually by foot, down to the Homedale Village Shops.

The shop, which today houses Clive’s Unichem Pharmacy, was originally a Bookseller, Beauty Salon and Hardware.

These shops were built by local builder

Norm Payne in 1959, with the block work completed by G N Mulder, Plastering and Bricklaying Contractors of Upper Hutt.

It was another 11 years before the Wai-nuiomata Shopping Mall was built.

The Museum is in the grounds of the Wainuiomata Primary School and is open on Sundays from 2 – 4 pm.

The same shops completed, 1961.

By Rhiannon McConnellUnsung heroes were celebrated

last Monday with an afternoon tea provided by Hutt City coun-cillor Margaret Willard.

Margaret says she decided to have the afternoon tea after win-ning a voucher a few weeks ago.

“I thought it was an oppor-tunity for councillors and the mayor to meet with people from the community... people who are just quietly giving to other people.”

Margaret says she was inspired by all the people who volunteer but dont receive recognition in Wainuiomata.

“There are a lot of people qui-etly just giving to other people.

“This is acknowledgement of everything they do.”

Ngaire Lambourn donated a trophy which was presented to Wainuiomata Intermeidate student Olivia Coffey, 12, for her leadership and excellence

at school. “I chose one that had been

not only good in leadership but also very helpful to other children who are struggling,” Ngaire says.

Olivia says she was very sur-prised when she was chosen to attend the afternoon tea.

“I thought I was in big trouble.” Andrew Mudge was one of the

volunteers celebrated. He picks up rubbish around

Wainuiomata to keep it looking clean.

But he does not think what he does is a big deal.

“The place needs tidying up.” Konini Primary School stu-

dent Ivy Beck, 10, says she was chosen because she is responsible.

“Ray Wallace actually gave me a personal invite.”

People were chosen from schools, organisations and the community.

MINUTES WITH: Joyce Lockyer

What is your favourite food?

What makes you smile?

Spending time with my beau-tiful grandchildren.

What’s your pet hate?

The word “compensation” which has now replaced “apology”.

Your favoured holiday destination?

Definitely UK where our daughter lives.

What’s your favourite music?

Nessun Dorma by Luciano Pavarotti.

What is one thing Wainuio-mata News readers would be surprised to know about you?

Nothing really - what you see is what you get!

A lovely Meat Loaf recipe that has been in my family for many years and is delicious hot or cold.

What’s next on your wish list?

To see the Wainuiomata Pioneer Church completely restored.

A saying you like to live by?

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

David Lange (if I could!) and Peta Mathias (hopefully Peta would do the cooking as well!)

Who would you invite to dinner?

Wainuiomata Pioneer Church Preservation Society

The fi rst high tea held by the Wainuiomata Pioneer Church Preservation Society was a great success.

The original plan to host the event in two marquees in the Church grounds had to be changed due to inclement weather but the newly renovated Wainuiomata Primary School Hall proved to be an ideal venue.

The 75 guests who were fortunate to obtain tickets (tickets sold out some 3 weeks ago) were most impressed with the attention to detail which the committee had given to every aspect.

There were white linen cloths on every table and all the beautiful antique china used was either on loan from committee members or from the Church Crockery Pantry (many members of the public have donated family china items to the Church for use in events such as this).

Flowers beautifully arranged by Susan Little adorned every table.

Each table had a menu detailing the items which would be served throughout the course of the High Tea and waitresses all attired in matching black and pink gingham aprons attentively made sure all guests were well looked after.

Appropriate food (minute lamb/mint

sausage rolls, mushroom vol au vents, asparagus rolls, scones with jam and cream, club sandwiches and an array of sweet cakes including pink velvet cup cakes) were made by some of the committee but the majority wre baked by Colleen Hira who was the driving force behind the whole event.

Music was provided by Loud Shirts who played gentle background music with guitar and violin.

Prior to the High Tea the Wainuiomata Museum had specially opened and were delighted to have a number of out of town visitors take advantage of the opportunity to visit there.

After the High Tea had fi nished at the School Hall, the Pioneer Church was opened and guests were able to view the interior and were also able to be entertained on a walk through the graveyard where one of our local historians, Vicky Alexander gave a very interesting talk on the history of the pioneers and their descendants who are buried there

Margaret Willard thanked the committee on behalf of the community and guests present and deemed the High Tea to be a huge success and one which should defi nitely be an event on the Wainuiomata calendar in the future.

On September 5, 1953, Joan Burdan (a descendant of the Burdan Pioneer family) married John Griffi n.

The photo shows them leaving the Wai-nuiomata Pioneer Church on the Coast Road.

Joan, or Aunty Joan as she is known to her many descendants still residing in Wai-nuiomata and the Hutt Valley, is a member of the Society dedicated to preserving this beautiful old Church.

At the January celebration of the comple-tion of Stage One of the restoration project was Aunty Joan was invited to participate in the ceremony by turning the “offi cial” ceremonial key.

The Wainuiomata Pioneer Church is now available for weddings and other services and enquiries are welcome. Ring Joyce on 564 8135.

Winners of colouring competitionBen McLennan of Professionals’

latest Colouring competition winners were Jasmin McGregor Paul, aged 7, and Marcus Hewitt, aged 8.

They each took home a prizepack from the Warehouse. Well done to them.

Ben says the competition is growing each time with the halloween haunted house competition being the biggest turnout so far.

Look for the next colouring competi-tion soon and thanks Wainuiomata for all your support.

Letters to the editor

Dear Ed, Demonstrable support is a word that was bought up

at the local Government Commission consultation on Wednesday.

We as a community need to show that there is not support for a supercity, or Unitary Authority.

Ngarie Lambourn and myself put a very strong case to the Commissioner on what has happened and how business and has gone back since amaglgamation.

The commissioner told the meeting he was here to listen and fi nd out if there was demostratable support. He also said he would examin the status quo.

The status quo will be better for residential rate pay-ers as most of us have fi xed incomes, morgages, and we won’t be able to give ourselves a payrise.

But unity authority in Wellington will give us rates increases when Wellington businesses say they are paying too much in the way of rates.

So residential ratepayers need to say no to a Unitary Authority and support the status quo.

We need to community who will support our local communities by

making a submission to the local Commission. I hope the new community board will be proactive

in showing that we should stay with status quo.

Regards,Mike Grigg

Support local, speak for residentsDear Ed, My husband was recently assaulted while out

riding his bicycle. I think it is shocking that this happens. The government talks about wanting us to stop

using our cars so much but if public transport is so expensive and biking is so dangerous then what options are left?

I am disgusted by this type of thing happening.

Regards, Angry wife

By Rhiannon McConnellA twelve-year-old boxer is still unde-

feated after being named the Manawatu Champion in his division last week.

Raymond Seumanu has already won the North Island Golden Gloves and Wel-lington Championship earlier this year.

Raymond has been f ighting for 18-months and has won every one of his six fi ghts to date.

“It feels great,” he says. “It’s because I work hard.” He has one goal – to be number one. Manager of the Wainuiomata Boxing

Club Rob Cameron says Raymond pushes himself and deserves all the wins he gets.

The championship was his fi rst time fi ghting two minute rounds but the extra 30 seconds did not deter him.

“It’s a little bit more tiring but I think the hard work he put in prior to that did wonders,” Rob says.

Rob says Raymond works hard and motivates himself.

“He’s not shy of hard work.” Rob says Raymond’s hard work and

success is not going un-noticed. “He’s sort of making a mark in New

Zealand at the moment as well.“It’s been a stellar year.” He says the other boys in the gym look

up to Raymond’s success. “It’s great for us.“They will want it just as much as he

did.” Rob says the year started off slow but

now Raymond has fought six fi ghts and two exhibitions.

“Here we are, still going.” Raymond will have a six week break

from December until February when he will be back into the ring again.

His coach believes he will remain unbeaten at the National Championships in Hamilton in three weeks time.

“We are waiting for the day when a kid will stand in front of him and want to throw punches.”

Because of his championship wins, Ray-mond will be competing in the Nationals despite having to fi ght 10 fi ghts before qualifying.

Still undefeated after hard work

Twelve-year-old Raymond Seumanu remains undefeated after 18-months of boxing.

The Wainuiomata Bowling Club season is now in full swing, with Interclub, Pennants, and Club Championships all in action.

The Champion Singles were won by June Dougall and Merv Jakeman.

Club President Marie Walsh said the Mel-

bourne Cup Gala Day held at the club recently was a great success, and teams came from as far as Manawatu to compete.

Around 60 locals of all ages also enjoyed the fi rst of the weekly Community bowls and barbecue on Wednesday night.
