Ambulance delay ‘worry’■ Dani McDonald

‘[Two or threeminutes] may not seema long time lost undernormal circumstancesbut in a life-threatening

situation it is.’ALEXCONNOR

A Wainuiomata resident hasraised concerns after aWellington Free Ambulance call-out to Wainuiomata resulted inthe ambulance having tobacktrack due to the FitzherbertRoad closure.

However, Wellington FreeAmbulance says it was fullyinformed of the road closure, butblamed the incident on acommunication breakdown.

Local resident Alex Connorsays an ambulance drove toWainuiomata around 10.20pm on

Monday, December 19. Theambulance attempted to drivedown Fitzherbert Road to get toits destination. Upon realising theroad was closed, the ambulancewas forced to drive back aroundParkway to get to the call-out.

Mr Connor estimates around atwo or three-minute loss in thecallout.

‘‘[It] may not seem a long timelost under normal circumstancesbut in a life-threatening situationit is,’’ he told Wainuiomata News.

Wellington Free Ambulanceexecutive manager Peter Cainsays the association was notified

of the road closure by Hutt CityCouncil via email. However, thatemail was not communicated tothe appropriate recipient and, as

a result, the paramedics on dutythat day were not aware of theroad closure, Mr Cain says.

He notes that all staff atWellington Free Ambulance arenow fully aware of the roadclosure.

‘‘As far as we are aware this isthe only closure notice that hasnot been passed on and we arecurrently investigating how thishas occurred to ensure it does nothappen again. All staff have beenreminded of the proper procedureto follow with regards to roadclosure notifications,’’ Mr Cainsays.

The Southern Crossing of the Tararua Ranges can range from a fairytale Lord-of-the-Rings style hike to a literal deathtrap. AndrewBonallack sets out to experience the three-day crossing from OtakiForks to Kaitoke.

DAY ONEOtaki Forks to Kime Hut — 5hours

My brother-in-law helpfullydrops off our tramping party atOtaki Forks on December 27, on hisway to a golf game in Otaki. It’s thefour of us: my father John, brotherDan and Dan’s partner Jen. We’veopted to advance our three-daytimetable by 24 hours, inanticipation of bad weatherapproaching Wellington. Right nowthe whole thing seems like a fairytale: no wind and painfully hot.Trampers who start late in the daytarget Field Hut as their night spot, three hours away, but it’s 10am andwe’re aiming for Kime Hut, fivehours and around 1300m of climbfrom where we’re standing. We’reall fit and have all the right gear, apart from a GPS that has suddenlydecided not to work. I’m more

worried about getting hungry. Danand Jen worry about water, although the weight of our packsreminds us we have plenty. Notmuch worries my Dad.

Field Hut is an uncomplicatedbut hot bush hike along Judd Ridge, and a useful spot to top up on water.Daytrippers and a couple of dogsare chilling out on the porch of theelderly hut when we arrive. I fill inthe hut’s intention book while weeat a packed lunch. One commentremarks: ‘‘No wind — is this theTararuas?’’

We get moving as another fivetrampers show up, also heading forKime. We have a tent, but we’drather score some early mattresses. In moments we reach the bushline, and suddenly it’s an alpinegardener’s dream, if you’re intoNorth Island edelweiss or mountaintoatoa or that sort of thing. Theviews span from the Otaki River to

Wellington harbour to the SouthIsland. More sobering is where thetrack splits off to the east, along themain Tararua ridgeline. In 2009 TePapa chief executive SeddonBennington and his friend MarcellaJackson wandered in that directionin a winter storm and died akilometre short of Kime Hut.

Kime Hut is tied down withcables, a testament to the weatherthe Tararuas can dish out. We doget our mattresses at Kime, but inthe end we have squash up a bit, with 16 trampers and two well-behaved dogs taking up residencefor the night (dogs are technicallynot allowed in huts). Stoves areunpacked, with everyonestudiously concentrating on theircooking while checking out whatothers have brought. Ours are theexpensive but quick freeze-driedmeals, while one family has packed

CHANGE OF SCENE: DanielBonallack (left) and JenSandman throw on warmergear as the weather closes inon the peaks between Kimeand Alpha Huts.

EARLY START: Trampers share atable for breakfast at Kime Hut.

WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THE SOUTHERNCROSSING?

Tramper MarkWatson, formerly of Wellington, has been trampingin the Tararuas since the age of six, and did his first SouthernCrossing at age nine. ‘‘It’s so accessible to Wellington,’’ he says.‘‘You’re only six kilometres from the city. Next thing you know, you’re on the top of a 1500m high peak. It’s got a bit of everything, from regenerating forest to top quality bush to alpine. It’s anunspoiled natural environment and I think that’s a big deal.’’ Hesays it’s not an extreme tramp by any means.‘‘But it’s challenging, definitely. I think for a lot of people, it’s theirfirst slice of an alpine adventure.’’ He says the Tararuas can be a bitof a secret to Wellingtonians.‘‘You can see these peaks, but you don’t knowwhat’s really upthere.’’

■ From P4a load of chilli con carne. Anotherguy is cutting bacon and carrots.Kime has no stove — there’s nofirewood at that height — and areputation as a very cold hut. But16 people in the summer turns theshort night into a sweat box. Mybrother breaks out the earmuffsas the snoring starts.

Day twoKime Hut to Alpha Hut — 5hours

It’s like the lights have gone outon our idyllic hike; it’s cold, foggyand blowing a serious wind fromthe north. We opt to hold off for abit, hoping it’ll lift. Most of the hutis heading back towards Otaki.

‘‘Have you done the SouthernCrossing before?’’ someone asks us.There’s some doubtful looks whenwe say it’s our first time.

We don’t get far beforeunpacking and breaking out theheavy clothing and windbreakers. The ridgeline path meanders like athread among a jawline of jaggedteeth, with steep drops on bothsides. Visibility is about 20 metres.I’m thankful for the warratahs andthe rock cairns marking the trail, and I dutifully place extra rocks onthe cairns as I pass. In snowconditions it would be scary. Thewind is nearly gale force, but itcould be worse; there are stories ofpeople almost crawling the route.Incongruously, we pass a pair ofhome made snowshoes, lyingabandoned on the side of the trail. The war memorial cross at MtHector, the highest point on thecrossing and the second highestpeak in the Tararuas, is passed withindifference, with no chance of thefamous view.

But shortlyafter Alpha Peak, about halfan hour from Alpha Hut, we dropbelow the clouds and suddenly theWairarapa Valley, from Mastertonto Paliser Bay, is visible. We dropinto a moss-covered beech forest, and discover the hut is moderatelypalatial — it has a deck and onlytwo other trampers for the night. Italso has a stove, which is fortunate, because we’ve just realised we’veleft our gas cooker, billy, coffee, teaand tube of condensed milk behind.

There’s cellphone coverage atAlpha Hut, and I update my wife. Infact, there was coverage for much ofthe day, owing to the height.

While we wait for the stove topwater to boil, we discover theprovenance of the snowshoes inAlpha Hut’s intention book. MikeJacobson of Porirua explains howhe had camped out on the south sideof Mt Hector in July after ‘‘a fairlyepic trip of waddling and ploddingand crawling and face-planting’’ inheavy snow. He had abandoned theshoes when he encountered ice.Other comments describe how theyencountered snow up to the cross

bar of Mt Hector’s monument, which would be about a metre indepth.

Day threeAlpha Hut to Marchant Rd — 9hours

Blogs frequently describe this asthe ‘‘boring’’ part of the crossing, but it’s a very pleasant way tofinish. It’s basically a long downhilljourney, mostly along MarchantRidge through mossy beech forest. The ridgeline occasionally pops itshead above the bush, giving viewsof Wellington and the Hutt Valley. For this leg, we make sure everyspare water bottle is full, which isjust as well — we end up consumingthree litres each on the last leg. Thereverse journey would be a toughway to start the Southern Crossing, and it’s clear why people prefercoming from Otaki and finishinghere.

Alana Estate rieslingproves a real delight

‘Alana viticultureandwinemaking

practices are hands-on—handpicked,

hand sorted,handcrafted’

Welcome to the first Wainuiomata WineClub Column for 2012. We hope that youhave enjoyed some fine wines over theChristmas and New Year period, and arepleased to note that as we had hoped, therewere very good specials on sparklingwines available during December.

Wine of the Month: Alana EstateRiesling 2011

This wine was released inNovember and follows thestyle of the 2010 Riesling, being slightly sweeter thanthe earlier off-dry vintages.

Handpicked, the grapeswere harvested into bins andpassed over the sorting tablebefore being destemmed, andtransferred by gravity intothe press.

The juice was held for 24hours at a cool temperature, and then followed a coolfermentation to extract thebest flavours. The wine, softgold in colour, was aged instainless tanks before beingfiltered and bottled.

Aromas of lime and honey entice thenose, and an acid balance with sweetnessmakes this wine a perfect accompanimentwith Asian cuisine. It can be enjoyed as anaperitif or with food, now and over the nextfive years.

Alana Estate was founded in 1993 by Ianand Alana Smart, on Puruatanga Road inMartinborough, almost opposite the famedDry River Vineyard on the north edge ofthe Martinborough Terrace. The first

vintage was produced in 1997.Planting started with pinot noir,

chardonnay, riesling and sauvignon blancon the upper terrace of the vineyard in thedeeper soils of the block. From 2000additional blocks were planted of the samevarieties in the shallower soils nearer theedge of the terrace. Differences in the twosoils, clone selection and vine age give

slight variations in fruitflavours enabling theproduction of complex singlevineyard wines.

Conversion fromconventional viticulture toorganic management iscurrently in process and whencomplete will further enhanceAlana Estate’s reputationoverseas as a producer ofpremium wines.

Viticulture and winemaking practices are hands-on — hand picked, handsorted, handcrafted. A state ofthe art gravity-fed wineryallows for gentle handling ofthe fruit with grapes arrivingin the winery and being

processed within 20 minutes of picking.Alana wines have won a number of

international awards and trophies, including the best boutique pinot noir atthe 2010 Los Angeles International WineShow.

Tip for this monthIf you have a screw-top bottle which isdifficult to open, try holding the whole ofthe top in one hand and turning the bottlewith the other. This should bring success.

For a Wainuiomata family, itwasn’t Santa Claus’ reindeerthat dropped by with presents, but rather a giant yellow truckplastered with Smiths City onthe side.

Karate academy shows off techniques

Whether it’s confidence ordiscipline you’re after,Wainuiomata’s karate academyopen day this Saturday can showyou all the things karate providesfor its students — while havingfun.

The Wellington Region KarateAcademy, held in the samebuilding as Life City Church onParkway, will open its doors at10am for students and the public tojoin in on some light karatetechniques.

Club administrator LyndaMacKenzie says the public can

also sit in and watch.‘‘Basically they get a bit of fun

and an idea of what our karatestyle is,’’ Lynda says.

The day will also include abarbecue, face painting, cake stalland a car wash.

The proceeds from the car washwill go towards Life City Church, with the rest going towards thenot-for-profit karate academy.

Lynda says the academy’skarate style, GoSoku Ryu, whichmeans hard fast style, heavilyincorporates Japanese tradition.

She says there is a lot ofdiscipline involved in the style, and shows results with many of

the younger children having moreconfidence and respect to theirpeers and teachers at school.

‘‘You can see it in the way theyinteract with each other and theadults in the class. They go fromnot wanting to acknowledge anyone, but after a few classes they tellyou all about their day or theirweek,’’ she says.

Students vary from four yearsto the oldest member aged 56.However, the sport isn’t limited tothe younger generation, with somekarate masters peeking in their80s, Lynda says.

Lynda’s husband, Scott, is theinstructor at the academy.

The academy opened in Junelast year and has now more than 60students from all ages involved. The club originated in Scott andLynda’s home, but interest becameso large that they had to move.

They built their currenttraining area up from scratch, importing mirrors from Dunedinand extending the building.

For a Wainuiomata family, itwasn’t Santa Claus’ reindeerthat dropped by with presents, but rather a giant yellow truckplastered with Smiths City onthe side.

The Buttenshaw familyfeatured in Wainuiomata Newslast month after they wereselected as a finalist in ClassicHits radio station’s onlinecompetition for Wellington’sNext Top Family, in conjunctionwith Smiths City.

Five families from around theWellington region gatheredvotes through the Classic Hitswebsite and in store votes fromSmiths City stores.

Each week, the family withthe least amount of votes left thecompetition before receiving$1000 for their efforts.

Elise Buttenshaw, 19, enteredher family into the Classic Hitscompetition, and says winningthe ultimate prize of $10,000worth of Smiths City vouchersfelt ‘‘ecstatic’’.

The family learnt of their winon Monday December 12 bylooking out their window to see agiant Smiths City truck parkedoutside.

‘‘We were all screaming andyelling when the truck turned up.

‘‘I was shaking with adrenalin. The relief of it was intense,’’ Elisesays.

The family divided up the moneyand brought each other Christmaspresents including Singstar, iPhonesand a surround sound television.

Local Breakfast Showcommentators Dave Smart andCamille Guzzwell, from Classic Hits, say they enjoyed seeing all of thefamilies working together towards acommon goal.

‘‘It was an incredible promotionto be involved with and watching theButtenshaw family run out of theirhouse once they knew they had wonwas something special,’’ MsGuzzwell says.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Thoughtless acts impact on whole communityTo the tall girl with blackpointy hair I saw writing on alamp post label defacing theStrand end of the mall I say,"You are a leader. Two others

followed your example. Youare teaching them to disrespectWainui, to give East-side a badname."

To the person who used astrong tool to cut away the

CONSUMER TIPS, TALES AND TITBITS■ Anita De Muth

‘The best thing is toremember the basics—usually when you buysomething the contract

is final’

Wrong size or colour . . . or youjust don’t like it, what are yourlegal rights on returns andrefunds?

The best thing is to rememberthe basics — usually when youbuy something the contract isfinal.

You do not have the right toreturn goods and exchange themor get a refund simply becauseyou have changed your mind oryour circumstances havechanged.

But there are exceptions . . .You are entitled to return an

item in the followingcircumstances.Store policy: Some stores have ano-questions-asked exchange

policy for customers who changetheir mind. This usually meansyou can swap for another item ora credit note. Occasionally astore returns policy allows you arefund but this is up to the store.

Special agreement: You canreturn a product if, beforepurchase, the shop agreed to aspecial deal that you couldreturn it if you changed yourmind. Usually tags must still beattached, boxes must still besealed and the item unused.Credit contract cooling-offperiod: You have purchased anitem under a store finance deal. They haven’t delivered it yet andit’s less than three days sinceyou were given your copy of thecredit contract. You can cancelboth the credit contract and the

contract to buy the item.Door-to-door sales: You haveseven days to cancel a door-to-door sale, but only if you signeda credit contract with the seller. This is extremely rare. Note:Paying a door-to-door seller bycredit card doesn’t trigger thisright to cancel.

Can a shop have a ‘‘Norefunds’’ sign? No, this is illegal, because it may mislead youabout your rights under theConsumer Guarantees Act, but itis legal for a shop to say: ‘‘Choosecarefully as we do not refund ifyou change your mind. If thegoods are faulty we will meet ourobligations under the ConsumerGuarantees Act.’’

If all else fails, negotiate!Just because you don’t have

the right to return the item or geta refund, you can still ask thestore. Many retailers are happyto oblige anyway, in order tokeep their customers happy.Faulty Goods: If an item has aserious fault then you areallowed to return it.

A serious fault means areasonable consumer wouldn’thave bought the product if they’d

known about the fault. TheConsumer Guarantees Act alsoapplies if the item can’t be easilyrepaired, is unsafe, doesn’tmatch its description or demosample, or is not fit for thenormal purpose.Exchange cards, how do theywork? If you are buying a gift forsomeone else and you don’tknow if they will like it, you canget an exchange card when youbuy the item. They can use theexchange card when they takethe gift back and exchange it forsomething else.

Exchange cards usually havean expiry date; make sure thatthere will still be time after theperson has received the gift forthem to return it.— Source www.consumer.org.nz

‘It was pretty cool just hearingmy name and them saying firstplace, instead of second or

third’JORDANRAMAKERS

The sweet taste of first place hasWainuiomata motocross rider JordanRamakers knowing that practice is whatworks best.

Jordan came first in the 2011 ManawatuO’Rion Club championships for ages eight to11 years in the 85cc section early last month.

It is his first win in motocross riding.‘‘I was just excited . . . It was pretty cool

just hearing my name and them saying firstplace, instead of second or third,’’ he says.

Jordan began riding a quad bike at threeyears old. He moved onto a 65cc when he wasseven, and practises on his friend’s farm inParaparaumu.

‘‘I just like riding around, getting in themud. It’s just fun going around NewZealand,’’ he says.

His win had him finish on 232 — winningby one point.

‘‘So I was lucky. I was a bit nervous,’’ helaughs.

Nearing the end of his race, and knowing

he was in first place, Jordan says he knew hehad to be calm and not fall off.

He says it was seeing his father’s joy thatconfirmed Jordan’s win.

‘‘I knew because my Dad was just like, happy as.’’

The down-to-earth 11-year-old, whoattends Our Lady of the Rosary school inLower Hutt, says practice and confidence iswhat brought his level of riding up.

‘‘[I] think about what I’m doing, where Isit on the bike, my positions, my lean — likepick the right lean around the track andaround corners. Just comes naturally.’’

A hobbit, a wimpy kid, Batman and BondIn amongst some questionable re-releases in 3D, the usual number of remakes and a heap of sequels, Kate Bleasdalefinds some films due for release this year that should be worth a trip to the cinema.

LOOKALIKES?: Johnny Depp in 21 Jump Street and The Lorax from Dr Seuss.PHOTO/FILE

Sione’s 2: Unfinished BusinessThe cheeky Island boys are back in this

sequel to the 2006 local hit, Sione’sWedding. Now it’s five years later, and thegang has been ordered to find their friendPaul (David Fane), who seems to berunning around Auckland in disguise. Thestorylinemay not be as strong as the first, but there should be some good localhumour in there.Opening January 19

WeNeed to Talk About KevinCreated from the chilling novel by

Lionel Shriver, the story follows a first-timemother who doesn’t love her son, andhow he grows up to become amassmurderer. The book is quite intense andthe film seems to pick on the same vibe.Needless to say, it might put some peopleoff having kids.Opening February 19

Project XAn original film by first-time director

NimaNourizadeh, this time it’s the geekykid’s turn to throw amassive house party. While the plot sounds cliched, the wholething has been filmed in the first-person(think BlairWitch Project) andwith an

entire cast of unknowns. Apparently therewas a lot of secrecy around Project X, andcastmembers weren’t allowed to take thescript off set.OpeningMarch 1

21 Jump StreetIt looks like this remake has erred

more on the side of comedy than action. The film version of the 1980s action seriesstarring Johnny Depp (pictured incharacter) is written and starring JonahHill (Superbad). So there’s plenty ofR-rated humour. Two new cops findthemselves thrown back into high schoolto try and uncover a student drug ring.Keep your eyes peeled for a cameo by theDeppster.OpeningMarch 22

The LoraxDr Seuss’ children’s story of a world

with no trees is becoming ever relevant, and now it’s been turned into an animatedfilm. Featuring the voices of Danny Devito,Zac Efron (High SchoolMusical) andsinger Taylor Swift, the story follows ayoung boy who endeavours to find outabout the Lorax’s world to capture theheart of the girl of his dreams. From the

creators of DespicableMe.OpeningMarch 29

The Dark Knight RisesThis is the third and final of director

Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, taking amuch darker angle than the 90sfilms. In this instalment, Batman(Christian Bale) comes up against super-strong villain Bane (TomHardy) andCatwoman (Anne Hathaway).Opening July 19

SkyfallDaniel Craigmakes his third outing as

James Bond, where the focus is onM’s(Judi Dench) past and 007’s loyalty to her.M16 comes under attack, and Bondmusttrack down the threat. Javier Bardrem (NoCountry for OldMen) has been confirmedas the villain.Opening November 22

The Hobbit: An Unexpected JourneyThis is the one that’s been happening

under our noses for the past couple ofyears. Peter Jackson takes on Bilbo’s(Martin Freeman) epic adventure withGandalf (IanMcKellen) and a group of 13dwarfs to slay the dragon Smaug.

Opening December 14

The RumDiaryFollowing after 1998’s Fear and

Loathing in Las Vegas is anotherexperience of Gonzo journalist Hunter S.Thompson, this time of a stint in Puerto

Rico during the 1950s. Johnny Depp takeson the role of Thompson yet again, andembarks on an adventure fuelled bybooze, maniacal ideas and a dangerouslove triangle. No release date yet for NewZealand, but due to be out in the UnitedStates in October.

SHERLOCK HOLMES: AGAME OF SHADOWSCast: Jude Law, Robert DowneyJnr, Noomi RapaceDirector: Guy RitchieRunning time: 129 minsRating: M (violence)Reviewed by Francesca Rudkin

Guy Ritchie sticks to the formulahe used in his first rendering ofArthur Conan Doyle’s famousliterary detective; it’s again a21st century approach to a 19thcentury story, with plenty of slickeffects and outrageous action, all peppered with smart quips.A Game of Shadows might still bea crime thriller, but Ritchie hastaken it up a notch with a sequelthat is more action-based andless cerebral than the original.Behind all the bullets flying inslow motion is a simple plotabout Holmes’ nemesis, criminalmastermind Professor Moriarty(Jared Harris) trying tomanipulate Europe into war, sohe can profit from the impendingconflict.Sherlock is the only person on toMoriarty, and his obsession withoutwitting his arch-enemy andthe possibility he may beoutwitted makes him ratherunstable. Robert Downey jnramps up the camp unorthodoxdetective routine, with DrWatson (Law) there to keep himon his meds.Ritchie gets the chance todeliver each fight sequencetwice as Sherlock, in ameditative frame of mind, likes tovisualise each fight — in slowmotion — before it begins. Soeach scrap is essentially thesame fight done over, whichbecomes tiresome. Elsewhere,Ritchie’s boyish sense of humourpops up. There’s Stephen Fry’srandom nude scene asSherlock’s brother Mycroft,Watson’s disastrous stag do andwedding, his new wife beingthrown off a train, and Sherlock’shabit of making himself invisibleby dressing in a body stockingmatching the decor of a room. Allgood fun, but none of this addsmuch mystery or intrigue.★★
