Waiariki Institute of Technology is one of the fastest growing and fastest improving tertiary institutes in New Zealand, according to the government’s latest Education Performance Indicators report released in July 2013.

High quality qualifications range from certificates, diplomas and degrees to graduate and postgraduate qualifications. Our new Master of Management can be undertaken with an optional endorsement in Business, Hospitality, Information Technology, or Health in order to tailor your studies.

The main goal of the institute is to create work-ready graduates who have the tools to become successful in their chosen field, are satisfied yet challenged in their careers, and able to contribute to their local economy. The government report shows this goal is being met as more of our students are completing their studies, achieving qualifications, and progressing further either in their studies or careers.

Each year our friendly, knowledgeable staff teach approximately 8,000 future nurses, teachers, IT or communications experts, artists, business owners, tradespeople, chefs, tourism or hospitality operators, fashion designers, farm managers, forestry or wood manufacturing specialists, to name just a few areas of the possibilities here at Waiariki.

Our main campus is located in beautiful Rotorua, the country’s tourism capital. Additional campuses are located in Taupo, Tokoroa, Tauranga and Whakatane. The institute is distinctly bicultural, honouring the country’s Māori heritage.

What industry opportunities are there?To become a successful artist, you need to have a good level of artistic ability in your chosen medium, whether it is drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, carving or another area.

More than half of artists are self-employed, however, many find work with museums, galleries, schools, advertising agencies and printers. The internet also allows artists to market themselves directly to potential buyers in New Zealand and overseas.

New Zealand contemporary art, craft and design with strong Pasifika or Māori elements are growing in popularity. Digital art and graphic design are also growing, providing many vocational opportunities to work for established companies or on your own.

Qualification DetailsThis certificate introduces students to specific aspects of Māori visual culture within the context of ngā mahi whakairo.

Translation of ngā mahi whakairo and the use of the terms in this context relate to the creation of ideas in various media that has a Māori essence. “Ngā” means plural, “mahi” describes the work or activity involved and “whakairo” is the making or carving of objects.

Ngā mahi whakairo does not specifically state any particular media as to restrict the scope of the course.

WHITECLIFFE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND DESIGN PATHWAY

Take your art to the next level. Waiariki Institute of Technology has an agreement with Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in Auckland which provides an excellent pathway opportunity for Waiariki graduates.

Waiariki students who successfully complete the Diploma in Art and Design Level 6 (or equivalent) and the Diploma in Art and Design (Advanced) Level 7 can pathway into Year 4 of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with Whitecliffe. This means you have the option to remain living and based in Rotorua and continue to study and be supported through Waiariki.

Adrienne WhitewoodDIPLOMA IN FASHION TECHNOLOGY

Adrienne Whitewood is a Rotorua clothing designer with her own label. When she heard about a fashion design event hosted by Waiariki Institute of Technology that was not your run-of-the-mill competition, she jumped at the chance to participate. Competitors were required to purchase items from Rotorua Hospice shops and convert, or upcycle, them into a garment for the runway. The list of prizes included a one-year fashion design scholarship at Waiariki.

“Initially I entered the Op Shop to Catwalk fashion competition as I love upcycling and I felt the show was for a good cause,” said Adrienne.“On the night of the competition I was blown away with the level of construction shown in the students’ garments so I knew then that the quality of the fashion lecturers was extremely high. Then when I found out I had won the scholarship I couldn’t wait to start studying, knowing I would gain high industry practice which I believe is critical in perfecting our craft.”

What industry opportunities are there?The fashion industry is very diverse and offers a wide range of careers in areas such as design, merchandising, product development, production, manufacture, textiles, buying, coordination of garment of fabric ranges, retail, textiles printing, soft furnishing, styling, alterations or one of the design services such as made-to-measure.

There are opportunities to start your label and we recommend that you initially gain some experience working in the industry. Working in retail is a great way to learn what customers buy which helps you position your design with a target market in mind. This can be a great option to undertake while you are studying.

In the fashion industry you may find yourself working alongside many other creative people such as graphic designers, photographers, stylists, models and journalists, so the variety is enormous.

The employers in this industry can also range greatly, from small boutique designers to large apparel manufacturers, retail stores, film, television, media companies or self-employment. If you want to absorb yourself in an exciting and interesting industry, there’s a career waiting for you.

Pathway to Study Overseas

In order to prepare students for the cutting edge of the global fashion industry, Waiariki has created an exclusive international partnership allowing students to pathway to further training in Australia.

Students are able to enhance their fashion education by completing the Advanced Diploma in Applied Fashion Design and Technology at Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE, Mooloolaba Campus, in Mountain Creek.

If you’ve already completed the Diploma in Fashion Technology at Waiariki this advanced diploma will enrich and extend your creativity with practical and theoretical skills and knowledge required by international and domestic fashion design industries.

This qualification focuses on developing design, technical and commercial expertise for a career in fashion, including advanced skills in pattern making, draping, costing and commercial visibility, business planning, marketing and selling your range.

The programme culminates with the presentation of your personal design collection and fashion marketing and business strategy to a panel of fashion professionals. Upon successful completion you’ll have gained advanced skills in fashion design and production, design management and product development.

Carla BindonCERTIFICATE IN HAIRDRESSING (ADvANCED)

Always wanting to be a hairdresser, Carla Bindon confesses to practicing on her brave friends when she was younger.

Enrolling at Waiariki Institute of Technology, Carla began studying toward the Level 4 Certificate in Hairdressing (Advanced) qualification. She has moved from strength to strength, her tutors say, and grown and learned a lot in her year here. Carla credits her achievement to those tutors.

“I didn’t really get on with teachers at school,” Carla says, “but I have a great relationship with the tutors at Waiariki. They are really supportive. I don’t think I would have got very far without their help as the course is quite intense.”

There have been many opportunities for Carla to perform and showcase her skills throughout her two years at Waiariki. Highlights, she says, have been the success and the encouragement she received in competitions. In 2011 Carla was awarded first place and the title of Top Student for the Rotorua campus in the Waiariki Dolly Competition and then won fourth place in the Pre-apprentice Night Hair category at the 2011 Regional Fashion Hair Design Awards held annually in Tauranga. Carla also put her study to good use by participating in the Wearable Arts competition, designing and styling the models’ hair for the event.

During her two years of study Carla worked part time at a local salon where she was then offered an apprenticeship.

Waiariki Academy of Singing and Music offers talented singers and musicians the opportunity to prioritise and enhance their music career. Our motto is ‘Dream, Believe, Create’.

Two New Music QualificationsThe academy was launched in 2011. Highly successful as a scholarship-based academy through 2012, it has continued to expand and now offers students the opportunity to study toward two new music qualifications.Professional musicians need a range of skills. The Certificate in Contemporary Music Performance is great place to start gaining those skills and students will be encouraged to continue their pathway in music study by enrolling in the Diploma in Contemporary Music Performance.The courses are taught by staff with extensive, real-world experience working with singers and musicians at the highest level in the industry both nationally and internationally.

Meet Your Academy InstructorsAcademy programme area leader Richard Anaru has an impressive list of musical achievements that has spanned more than 30 years in the industry and seen him perform all over the world. Richard has produced critically acclaimed shows and recordings both here

and overseas, the most rewarding, he says, were Sir Howard Morrison’s Australian Tour in 2000 and the Rotorua Millennium Celebration on New Year’s Eve 1999. He is now busy directing and composing music for Tv productions such as Māorioke and the ever-popular My Country Song.

Music and audio tutor David Grindley is a musician, programmer, audio engineer and producer. He has extensive experience performing, has written and produced advertising, musical theatre and albums within Australia, Singapore and New Zealand, and worked

as a musical director, technical director,

post production and has lectured in music performance, song writing, recording and music technology. David holds an Associate Diploma in Creative Arts, majoring in Contemporary Music, and a Certificate Iv in vocational Training.

The academy’s vocal specialist is Elisha Hulton, a mezzo-soprano from Palmerston North now residing in Rotorua.Elisha has performed as a soloist with the Auckland Choral Society, at the finals of the Westfield Style Pasifika, been a Becroft Grand Aria finalist and performed the role of

Serse in Handel’s Xerse with the Handel Consort and Quire. The 2009 Iosefa Enari Memorial Award recipient has performed in Fiji and at the opening ceremony of the South Pacific Games in Samoa, and is a current member of Operatunity, the renowned opera singing ensemble of Australasia, and Pure voice, a women’s singing trio. Elisha holds a Bachelor of Music (Performance) and a Postgraduate Diploma (Performance), both under the tutelage of Dr Te Oti Rakena at the University of Auckland.

Dame Malvina MajorIt is with great pride and honour to include Dame Malvina Major, GNZM, DBE, ATCL, LTCL, LRSM, Hon D Litt (Massey), Hon D (Waikato), as one of the patrons of the academy. Her contribution and services to music in this country are second to none. An international performer, she resides in New Zealand while balancing her academic teaching duties with her singing career.

What we offerSingers and musicians will have access to workshops on business skills, music theory, vocal training, audio visual training, song writing and media.
