DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to the Theatre 40 production of The Sound ofMurder, an obscure British play that came and went

in 1959, and has barely been seen since. It was a Peter Cush-ing vehicle, directed by the American actor Fred Sadoff, whohad recently been invited to be the first American to direct atStratford Upon Avon. The show opened at the Aldwich The-atre in London, but Cushing left the show after just twoweeks. He was working on a movie and could barely makehis call time. Sadoff left for the US either just before or justafter opening night and the show soon closed after poor re-views finally sealed its fate.Wait! Don’t Leave! Artistic Director David Hunt-Staffordhas discovered a hidden gem. The play was perhaps doomedby being the wrong sort of play at the wrong time. Britainhad just started a cultural revolution in the theatre whichswept across the nation, namely the emergence of the"kitchen sink drama". Look Back in Anger opened in 1956and changed everything. If a play wasn’t about angry youngworking-class men, it was largely dismissed. And so we’redelighted to bring to the Theatre 40 community a play withnot a single character resembling Jimmy Porter: The Soundof Murder.

- - Adrian Cohen

The Audience’s RoleYou are the featured player in tonight’s performance. Here aresome reminders of how you can play your role with style, graceand professionalism.

• There is no louder sound in a theatre than the rattle of cel-lophane. Please unwrap candy or cough drops before theplay begins.

• If your companion can hear you whispering, other mem-bers of the audience, and the actors, can hear you also.

• Please turn your cell phone, digital alarm watch or pageroff, or set it to vibrate.
