EDITORIAL (These are the personal views of the Editor hopefully representing the views

of the residents of Cherry Willingham, feel free to challenge them– I will publish any comments. )

Parking—still thoughtless parking is taking place in the Rudgard Avenue /

Dale Avenue vicinity. It also seems that the threat of £30 fines and

implementation of those fines in the past month by our local Police group

have had little effect as more vehicles than ever seem to be straddling the

pavements and yet we have a good number of mobility scooters and also a

blind resident in the village and this is very difficult for them to get around .

CW2020 Group —Having visited the lower reaches of Lady Meer's Road I was

very impressed with the style of the houses ,complete with vehicles, which

lead me to believe that we must have a new sprinkling of executive talent in

the village. These are the ideal people, with their business acumen and ’how

to get things done’ abilities, that we encourage to volunteer to be part of the

CW2020 Group. A group whose role is to come up with ideas to make Cherry

Willingham a place that has a few more facilities than it currently enjoys. The

village has been somewhat dormant while surrounding communities have

shown initiative and bagged some substantial government grants to improve

their aspect. Our own District Councillors have steadily obtained grants and

we are grateful for that but we need big ideas to attract big grants. Even short

-stayers would see property values increase if the village appeared more

dynamic and an even more desirable place to live. The current CW2020

group appears to be only eleven and we need more involvement ( a bigger,

more representative group to decide future outcomes). This group have

stepped up to the plate, however, and tried to extract the details of what the

village would like but due to public apathy their results represent only small

percentage of households. In such cases there is a danger of resulting

suggestions emerging out of the desires of this small group rather than the

community as a whole, so please step up you ‘technocrats’ and show us how

to get representative results. Professional skills were utilised in Horncastle

and they even passed the blueprint to us to save a lot of ‘how do we start’

posers but I do not see evidence of it being taken advantage of. We need this

‘steering group’, since that is its purpose, to coordinate other little groups

tackling the issues raised by the community as a whole…………………………..

PLEASE GET INVOLVED ! YOUR VILLAGE NEEDS YOU!

Labour of Love: would anyone like a labour of love? We are struggling tokeep the Churchyard as tidy as we would like it. The grass is cut by Veolia, but there are flower beds to keep on top of and generally we know it needsto be kept in better order than it is. The PCC would be grateful to know ifthere is anyone who would like to help out? Please contact Revd Penny inthe first instance.

‘Last year you might remember that I wrote in my blog about ‘The

Journey’ .... a walk through the nativity with Jesus, staged in Lincoln Castle

grounds. It is on again this year on 14th, 15th and 16th December at 6pm

and 8pm. Do take the opportunity to draw aside for the 40-45 minutes that it

takes and ponder on the mystery and the wonder of the birth of Jesus....it is

something quite special. Contact me if you want more details.’

Parish Council Matters

Summer Gala: A small group of residents have met to discuss ideas for acommunity event for the summer of 2013, with dates of 13th or 14th Julybeing suggested. Members of the Gardening Club, in particular, havecome up with some brilliant suggestions. The Parish Council have agreedto support a Village Gala in principle, but we need a team to organise it. Ifyou would like to get involved as an individual or you belong to a villageorganisation that would like to take part in some way, please come andshare your ideas at an open meeting in the Millennium Hall at 7.30 p.m. onMonday 12th November.

Library changes: The Parish Council has agreed to continue negotiationswith LCC over the future of library services in the village and thedevelopment of a Community Hub. Due to printing deadlines, a full reportwas not possible this month but will be included next time.

Weather disruption: Cherry Willingham Parish Council is once againmaking contingency plans for the coming winter. We have a supply ofsnow shovels positioned throughout the village, which are available for useby residents to clear drives and walkways for vulnerable people and theCadets have offered help in the way of local shopping. The Parish Councilwill retrieve messages for either service during periods of extreme weatheron 01522 753398. Our flood warden is constantly monitoring the floodsituation and recent works undertaken seem to have improved the situation.

There are various numbers available in the case of weather emergenciesand Lincolnshire County Council will open their main switchboard 01522782070 to re-direct calls as appropriate. Radio Lincs are sure to run a fullyinformed service so please listen for updates. The Red Cross is usually onhand in an extreme emergency and the Community School have offeredaccommodation if we are in real need. We also hope that the Village Hall,Primary School, Public Buildings and Religious Communities will offershelter in the event of a major catastrophe.

Contacting the Clerk: In person between 10am and 11am on Tuesday andFriday mornings, by letter to the Millennium Hall, by email [email protected] or by phone on 01522 753398 (answerphoneavailable). The next Parish Council meeting will be held in theMillennium Hall on Monday 19th November at 7.30pm.

Three years ago this month, I had the privilege of spending some time in Israel.

It’s strange that even as a Christian, I had never hankered after going there, but an

opportunity presented itself and I decided it was one that was too good to miss. I

didn’t really know what to expect. When you read the Bible you conjure up

images of what things look like. First impressions were of a country much smaller

than I imagined (about the size of Wales), very dry (it hadn’t rained for months),

very cosmopolitan, and with a slight tension in the air at times, particularly

around one or two of the rather disputed sights, such as the wailing wall.

There were, however, times of absolute bliss. These were in places that I

sometimes describe as ‘thin’ places – places where the gap between heaven and

earth seem imperceptible. Two come to mind very easily. One was Sunday

morning at the top of Mount Tabor, purported to be the place where Jesus took

Peter, James and John and where they saw Him transfigured, His body changing

in appearance in front of their eyes. We managed to get up there quite early, it

was a beautiful day. In the place of the transfiguration a church has been built,

with a wonderful dome, and there we sat under the dome, singing with others

from other nations, humanity united together in one voice… an image of heaven

itself for me.

The second place, was less inviting to begin with. The place where, the Bible

tells us, David fled to escape Saul who was seeking to kill him. It is a desert area,

stony and arid. On the day we were there, the Israeli version of Anglian Water

were laying pipes, so there was dust everywhere, it was boiling hot and I couldn’t

understand the attraction of this place…. until we got to David’s Falls. David

wrote a lot of poetry that is recorded in the Bible. It is poetry that speaks of His

humanity, his relationship with God, and how He perceives God to be. Sat at this

waterfall he wrote: ‘As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after you, O

Lord’…. As I called to mind that psalm, I couldn’t help myself wade through the

water and stand fully clothed under the torrent of cold, refreshing, clear, cleansing

water – another touch of heaven in the midst of the desert. I am sitting here

writing this and remembering that today – a day when I feel weary and in need of

refreshment: that I worship a God who is always ready to fill me with the

refreshing life of the Holy Spirit – it doesn’t take a trip to Israel – all I have to do

is ask.

May God refresh you as you seek Him – Penny

What is your 2020 vision for Cherry's future?

Since the Community Gala, themembers of the CW2020 SteeringGroup have been busy analysing yourvery many helpful responses to theabove question and believe that wecan begin to sum up your vision forCherry Willingham looking towards2020 as:

“Building on all that is good about thevillage and community now, to createa friendlier, greener, safer, healthierplace to live; with enhanced facilitiesand services which meet the needs of

all residents; and supported by avolunteering community, vibrantvoluntary organisations and strongpartnerships with other agencies.”

As a result of the summer holidays ithas taken us longer than weanticipated to work through yourmany helpful ideas so we will nowcomplete drafting our report by theend of the year. Once we have donethis we will arrange furtheropportunities for you to comment onit before it is finalised.

If you have any comments on thedraft vision above, or want to knowmore about any of this, pleasecontact us via the Parish Office or [email protected].

During the month leading up to the October meet-ing many of our members have taken part inactivities with other WI groups. On 21September some of us enjoyed the Ladies ofLincolnshire Lunch at the Farmers, Welton Hill. The speaker was Sue Hickson - Marsay, the lady

pilot of the Humber Lifeboat, who gave an interesting insight in to herwork.

The following Friday we entered two teams for the WI Quiz Night at NorthHykeham and the team comprising Hazel Larcombe, Gene Dainty andNorma and Debbie Shaw was the winner. The next day a small group ofmembers enjoyed a Lincolnshire Evening which was organised jointly byFiskerton WI and St Clement’s Church social group at Fiskerton VillageHall. After an excellent meal using Lincolnshire produce we wereentertained by Ivor Akester with his dialect monologues.

Members brought generous donations for the Community Larder to thismonth’s meeting and, after the usual business, we were pleased to welcomea new member, Janet Brooker.

The speaker, Christine Sheriff, talked about Country Markets, aco-operative which regulates members and ensures that their wares areproduced in hygienic conditions and that proper packaging is used. It wasinteresting to see the various types of packaging available to keep itemssafely and to present them attractively. Country Markets are held at variousvenues in the county including St Peter’s Hall in Woodhall Spa on alternateFriday mornings. Christine then gave a demonstration of chocolate makingand we were able to sample some she had made earlier.

The results of the competition ‘An Advertising Poster’ were: 1st AnnieRadcliffe, 2nd Anne Driver and 3rd Noreen Morrison.

14th November’s meeting will include a Bring and Buy and a Line ofScarves. The speaker will be Anita Botterill on Christmas Cards and thecompetition will be A Sentimental Christmas Card.

Cherry Willingham

Football ClubSince the last issue we have only played three cup

games. We took on old rivals Saxilby Athletic in the Challenge Cup andcame out worthy winners 4-1.

Then in a County Cup game we entertained CGB Humbertherm aLincolnshire League team from Grimsby when the lads put up acreditable performance and outplayed them in the first half to lead 1-0well into the second half but then gave away two soft goals to eventuallyget beat 4-2. Brendan Foster-Mattheison scored to bring his total to sevento be with the league’s leading scorers. In the other game we wereknocked out of the Amature Cup by a good Metheringham side. On apositive note we are fielding a full squad of players for all games andyoung players from the village are being given a chance and getting in thesquad. Stuart Brammer seems to have claimed the left back position andMax Cawthorn and Steve Stallard made their debuts last week. We hopethey will continue to show their commitment in the future. On anunhappy note we are sorry to lose Neil Robinson, a good defensiveplayer who broke his leg in a training accident. We are still havingtraining sessions on the 3G floodlit pitch where other players arewelcome for a small charge to cover the cost. At the moment they are onTuesday evenings but is subject to change, possibly on Thursdays.

Winter Garden WasteThe garden waste shutdown for this year starts on 3 December 2012and collections will resume again on 25 March 2013.

Following comments from Councillors and residents the shutdown is amonth later this year.

Suspending garden waste collections during the winter enables WLDC toreduce costs and work within the reduced budget from centralgovernment whilst continuing to provide vital services.

As before, WLDC are encouraging residents to try composting theirgarden waste. Composting is the best environmental option, andsubsidised composters, starting at £16, are available by contacting0844 571 4444 or by on line at www.lincscc.getcomposting.com.Alternatively, residents can use their local Household WasteRecycling Centre (HWRC) and further information is available atwww.lincolnshire.gov.uk/hwrc, residents can also store smallamounts of garden waste in their green bin until collections resume.

WLDC are also introducing a bespoke service this year for those

residents who can't make use of either of the above options and still

require a kerbside collection service of garden waste during the winter.

WLDC will offer a service whereby residents can purchase sacks and

book a collection slot. These sacks will be collected via our bulky waste

service which means they can be kept separate and sent for composting.

The charge for collecting sacks will be £7.25 for every 5 sacks

collected.

When do I use it? People should use the NHS 111 service if they needhelp or advice urgently but it's not a life-threatening situation. Youshould call 111 if:

• you don't think it can wait for an appointment with your GP; or

• you don't know who to call for medical help.

For less urgent health needs, you should still contact your GP or dentistin the usual way, and for immediate, life-threatening emergencies, please continue to call 999.

Why should I use it? NHS 111 is a fast and convenient way to get theright help -whatever your need, wherever you are, and whatever thetime. It can also help us to free up 999 and local A&E departments sothat they can focus on emergency cases.

What if I have already been given a number to call for a condition Ihave? If you are already receiving healthcare and a health professional hasgiven you a specific telephone number to call when you are concerned aboutyour condition, please continue to use that number.
