Guy Fawkes Night

• Oftenreferredtoasbonfirenightorfireworksnight,GuyFawkesnightisapopularcelebrationintheUK. 

• Its history begins with the events of the 5th ofNovember1605whenGuyFawkes,wasarrestedwhile guarding explosives beneath the houses ofparliament.

The Gunpowder plot

• The Gunpowder Plot was a failed assassinationattempt against King James I by a group ofEnglishCatholics.

• The plan was to blow up the House of LordsduringtheStateopeningofEngland´sparliament.

Whydidtheydoit?

• They devised a plan to blow up the Houses ofParliamenttoprotestpoortreatmentandoppressionofCatholicsunderthereignofKingJamesI.

• TheProtestant religiondominatedGreatBritain in1603,whenKingJamesIbecameking.UnlikethemajorityofCatholicswhowereloyaltotheCrown,theyhopetooverthrowtheProtestantmonarchy.

• Thomas Percy secured a position as a royalbodyguard and purchased a house near thehousesofparliament

• They dug a tunnel as far as the mainfoundations of the House of Lords andtransportedbarrelsofgunpowder.
