Bishop Neumann Central Catholic Jr./Sr. High School 202 South Linden Avenue, Wahoo, NE 68066 (402) 443-4151 Volume XXX Number 2 October 2019 Over the past few weeks and months I have heard a phrase used multiple times that I thought was an interesting phrase – Isnt that why we send our kids to Catholic schools?I cannot speak to the intention behind the phrase, nor can I speak as to why each individual family decides to send their kids to Catholic schools. However, I would like to express why I hope each family sends their kids to our Catholic schools. I hope you send your children to our schools because you want them to get an excellent education. Year in and year out, we consistently see a high level of educational success for our students. We regularly get reports that our elementary schools are at the top of standardized tests scores, and our ACT scores are always above the state average. While standardized scores are not the be-all-end- all of education, they do help us to see how we compare to other schools. This does not surprise me since we have excellent teachers and the strong family support of our teachers makes it much easier to actually teach the students. I hope you send your children to our schools because you want them to be involved in extra- curricular activities. We have had a great deal of success in extra-curricular activities. Whether it be the girls winning the 2018-2019 NSAA Cup for class C (and the school getting the runner up for girls and boys combined) or the musical receiving the NHSTA 2019 Outstanding Musical Theater Production award (the highest award you can get for a play in Nebraska), we have seen enormous success in our extra-curricular activities. However, I hope that the main reason you have your children participate in extra-curricular activities is not for the great success (although that is nice) but for the high level of discipline that our coaches help to instill in your children. Discipline breeds success not just in activities but in your childrens future lives as well. Most of all I hope you send your children to our schools because you want us to help you in raising your children in the Faith. That is ultimately what sets us apart from public schools. While I think we outshine them in academics and extra-curricular activities, the truth is a person can get both at a public school. What they cannot get is the Faith. Having the Faith be a central component to our schools is what truly sets us above what other schools can offer. With that said, however, I hope nobody sends their kids to our school as a replacement for what they provide at home. Parents are the first educators of the faith and if they are not helping their children to grow in the faith, then there is little that we can do here. We only give your child a chance to thrive in the faith when we are an extension of your familys values. I see so many Catholic school families striving to practice the faith in all aspects of their lives. Keep doing that! Your efforts, with the support of our Catholic schools, are what will ultimately help your children to choose to be lifelong disciples of Jesus. Fr. Matthew Zimmer

October 2019

Over the past few weeks and months I have heard a phrase used multiple times that I thought was an interesting phrase – “Isn’t that why we send our kids to Catholic schools?” I cannot speak to the intention behind the phrase, nor can I speak as to why each individual family decides to send their kids to Catholic schools. While standardized scores are not the be-all-end-all of education, they do help us to see how we compare to other schools. This does not surprise me since we have excellent teachers and the strong family support of our teachers makes it much easier to actually teach the students. I hope you send your children to our schools because you want them to be involved in extra-curricular activities. Discipline breeds success not just in activities but in your children’s future lives as well. Most of all I hope you send your children to our schools because you want us to help you in raising

your children in the Faith. Parents are

the first educators of the faith and if they are not helping their children to grow in the faith, then there is little that we can do here. We only give your child a chance to thrive in the faith when we are an extension of your family’s values. I see so many Catholic school families striving to practice the faith in all aspects of their lives. Keep doing that! Your efforts, with the support of our

Catholic schools, are what will ultimately help your children to choose to be lifelong disciples of Jesus.

Campus Ministry Sixty Campus Ministry students attended Pro-life day at Pius High School on September 17th. Students joined students from Pius and Aquinas to listen to Scott Klusendorf, president of Life Training Institute, where he trains pro-life advocates to make a persuasive case for life in the public square. Students later prayed the rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at Planned Parenthood.

Spiritual Direction is being offered to all sophomores and juniors. Students meet once a month with a priest, sister, or trained faculty member to talk about and grow more deeply in their relationship with Jesus.

Bishop Neumann’s pro-life group, Torch, continues to meet the 1st Wednesday evening of the month. Students learn about and discuss pro-life issues from birth to natural death. Discussions are also held on current topics relating to the faith.

2020 March for Life Registration is now open for the annual March for Life in Washington D.C. January 22 is a day which hundreds of thousands of ardent pro-lifers, Catholic and non-Catholic, attend the National March for Life in Washington, D.C., the unfortunate anniversary of the legalization of abortion by the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. It is a peaceful and prayerful way to give a voice to the voiceless unborn children.

Each year the Diocese of Lincoln participates in standing up for the right to life. The trip is open to all high school students. The trip includes round-trip transportation, housing, some meals, and touring of Washington D.C. monuments and other sites. Dates: January 21-26, 2020 Registration Cost: $450 Trip must be paid in full by December 1, 2019. Registration is open to all high school students. Buses will 6 p.m. from Good Council Retreat House in Waverly on the afternoon of January 21. Arrival back at John XXIII Center will be approximately 5 p.m. on January 26, pending weather and traffic. Chaperone Cost: $250. Must be 21 or older. Contact the Diocesan Youth Ministry Office for additional information at 402-473-0625 or register at https://www.lincolndiocese.org/M4L. Space is limited.

The next Neumann FIRE meeting will be at Bishop Neumann on Sunday, October 20th, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Neu-mann cafeteria. Students will listen to Husker football player, Matt Masker, give a talk on his faith journey and his experi-ences being a part of the University of Nebraska football team. There will also be time for adoration and confession. This is open to all high students.

Bishop Neumann March for Life Scholarship The Bishop Neumann High School March for Life Scholarship is available to students in grades 9 -12. Two $250 scholarships, funded by the Specht-Hoven Family in honor of the sanctity of life, are available annually. The scholarships will be awarded based on financial need, participation in pro-life activities, and the completion of a scholarship essay. The typed essay should include: 1) why attending the March for Life is important, 2) ways the student has supported pro-life issues, and 3) how this pilgrimage will impact their spiritual life. Deadline: November 15th Applications returned to: Gery Kenney
