Guidelines for Flu Shots

While the Centers for Disease Control and P r even t i on r e c o m m e n d s a yearly flu vaccination for nearly everyone-starting at 6 months of age-only about half of Americans get one. While vaccination rates last year were highest for children under 5 and for seniors, hospitalizations were highest among healthy adults ages 18-64, a third of which routinely choose to skip the shot all together.

A flu shot is equally as important for pregnant women. It can be given during any trimester and also protects the baby during the first few months of life.

The CDC states that there are no signs of dosage shortages or delays this year and that there are a variety of vaccination methods to choose from in addition to the regular shot.

There’s the FluMist nasal spray (for healthy children 2-8 and healthy people to age 49 who aren’t pregnant); the egg-free shot (for those allergic to eggs); a high-dose shot (for those 65 and older whose immune systems may require an extra boost); and, finally, a tiny-needle shot that just penetrates the skin (for those who are fearful of larger needles).

The CDC is also urging people 65 and older to get a one-time pneumonia vaccine in addition to their flu shot. It’s important to make an appointment with your primary-care physician as soon as possible to discuss your vaccination options.

Now that fall is here and winter is just around the corner, the pharmacists and staff at Bloomfield Drug Store are here to work closely with you and your physician to help keep you as comfortable as possible during the coming “cold and flu” season.

West Penn Hospital Begins Free Lung Cancer Screening Program Smokers and former smokers are targeted in an effort to reduce Lung Cancer Mortality; National Groups recommend screening for at-risk patients.West Penn Hospital, part of the Allegheny Health Network, is now offering a free screening program to patients at risk of lung cancer in hopes of catching the disease in as many patients as possible at its earliest and most curable stages. Screening is based at West Penn Hospital’s Esophageal and Thoracic Institute as part of a pilot project, with future plans to implement the program throughout the Allegheny Health Network. Physicians from the hospital’s thoracic radiology and pulmonary medicine divisions are also providing multidisciplinary support to the initiative. The CT screening test itself requires no preparation or contrast injections. “The program is designed to make screening simple and effective”, Dr. Schumacher said. Patients can schedule an appointment by calling 1-844-AHN-LUNG. They will be then contacted by a lung cancer Nurse Navigator who will educate them on the screening process and the implications of test results. The Navigator will guide patients through follow-up care if necessary as well as on critical disease prevention measures such as smoking cessation classes. Part ic ipants are not obligated to return to an Allegheny Health Network facility for treatment or follow up. Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the leading cause of cancer death. Smoking is the cause of about 85 percent of all lung cancer cases, and the risk increases with age. About 37 percent of U.S. adults are current or former smokers

Tri-Ward Baseball Recapby Corky McCabe After a few rough moments, Tri-Ward Baseball had another successful and great season! We had eight teams this year and they all did a great job! In our Minor League, Bloomfield Drug Store and West Penn Hospital ended up tied for 1st place. In our Little League, Angelo’s Pizzeria took 1st place with an undefeated season. This season our Pony League also did an awesome job. They went to the playoffs and were just one game away from the final. We ended our season with a banquet at Idlewild Park. It’s always a fun day. This year everyone had a chance to attend a Pirate’s Baseball Game. The kids even got to go down on the field. We had a great night watching the Pirates win. We tried something new this year by having a fall ball clinic. It gives the kids a chance to learn some extra baseball skills and instruction. We would like to thank all the players, parents, sponsors, and boosters who helped make this season a success. A special thank you to the dedicated coaches who share their time and enthusiasm by coaching the kids. We couldn’t do it without you!

foundation for a very strong work ethic evolved for them. During their formative years a common thread linking the two previous generations was a philosophy of providing stability and staying close to LaFamiglia. Guido DeAngelis states, “My parents chose to live in Bloomfield to be with people who shared the same beliefs and family values. They felt Bloomfield was a safe and secure place to raise children and eventually had my two brothers and myself. My paternal Grandmother lived with us and taught me the Italian language as a lifetime gift. I studied and speak the language fluently today and it has been an invaluable skill to use over the years, helping immigrants in many legal situations to understand the law.” Anthony Mariani echoes emphasis on LaFamiglia stating, “I was always surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives with a feeling of living in a community where everyone had a high regard for each other and a sense of loving and caring. We didn’t know growing up, how valuable that would be in shaping our futures. We just thought this was the way it was supposed to be for everyone.” He is one of five siblings and his father still resides in his grandfather’s family residence in Bloomfield. While Guido and Anthony’s immediate families were shaping their lives in the home, together they became part of an external family that would teach them loyalty, laughter, and ingenuity among friends. As little boys the Judges lived within blocks of each other and played together almost every day of their lives on Harriett Street in Bloomfield. Their beloved neighbors, the Petraglia family, added their seven siblings into the mix and the energetic group of young children numbered 15, with 9 boys and 6 girls. Anthony recalls with fond memories, “there wasn’t a day we weren’t playing football or swimming in the Petraglia family pool, riding go-carts, or playing baseball for Rich Romano, our Little League coach. He really shaped so many lives of young men in the Bloomfield community. We grew up having so much fun.” Guido is quick to pick up on that note because the friendship also involved going to the same schools, from Immaculate Conception Elementary School to Central Catholic High School. He recalled that, “our parents volunteered at the cafeteria and the athletic activities. Our families were friends with each other and we shared the same Bloomfield buddies all of our lives.” When this writer sought to explore the thoughts of their dear friend Carmen Petraglia, he summed it up in this manner, “Anthony and Guido are a tribute to their parents – great people who gave stable, good parenting. I wouldn’t trade one minute of the times of my life with them for anything else in this world.” Judges Guido DeAngelis and Anthony Mariani have been on a journey of paralleling events that have created a tapestry woven so closely that their relationship is truly one of Brotherhood. Their lives, growing up in Bloomfield, proved to be the perfect foundation for their individual legacy’s within the Judicial System. For Judge Anthony Mariani of the Criminal Division, he will continue to promote confidence in the administration of justice by impartial and equitable application of the law to protect the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution. Judge Guido DeAngelis of the Family Division will resolve family legal issues, maximize access to the Courts and address the unique needs of children and families. These two men will carry with them the love and the sense of family that was learned before their professional careers began. They will never forget Bloomfield nor will they ever be forgotten by Bloomfield as they remain a vital part of our history.Janet Cercone Scullion

Pittsburgh, 1914100th Anniversary of VFW’s First Convention The first VFW Convention convened in Pittsburgh from September 14-17, 1914. They met at Pittsburgh’s most elite accommodations, the Schenley Hotel with 65 VFW Posts in good standing and a representation of 246 delegates. The first convention accomplished the desire for a name and an identity to sustain the organization’s solidarity well into the future of America. “Be it resolved, by this encampment, that we unite and consolidate with the said society heretofore known as the Army of the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico under the name of Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.” The first military parade, including VFW members marched to West Park, now part of Allegheny Commons. The VFW honored the war dead, including those Allegheny County residents who served in the Spanish-American War, thus beginning a 100 year tradition in Pittsburgh. The four Army Regiments of the original members were from the regular 17th U.S. Infantry, the 1st Colorado Infantry, the 10th Infantry of the Pennsylvania National Guard, and the 28th U.S. Volunteer Infantry. The VFW’s next National Convention will be held in Pittsburgh in 2015 when Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief John A. Biedrzycki, Jr., a resident of Coraopolis, PA, son of the late Ann Cercone, and stepson of Judge William Cercone, Sr. will take the oath of office for Commander-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. On its 100th Anniversary, the VFW came full circle but not without the strong support from Bloomfield in the person of Ray Fern for 30 years of those 100 years. He was also making history inside the organization.

Ray Fern, a U.S. Air Force Korean War Veteran joined the VFW in 1984 and became a Life Member in 1985. He understood the feelings of men and women who served with the U.S. Military and those who loved America and the principle of freedom for which it stood. He served two terms as Commander of Jene-Mager VFW Post 278. He then became an Allegheny County Council Member and County Commander. His achievements of being 100% in membership and programs during his tenures as Post and County Commander earned him the title of Outstanding Commander. His 100% achievements in the District earned him the title of All*American Commander. Ray Fern’s stewardship of service to veterans went deep into the heart by reaching out to hospitalized men and women as a leader in the Military Order of the Cootie (MOC), the Honor Degree of the VFW that is designated to the direct service of hospitalized veterans. In 1987 Ray accepted the invitation to become a member of the MOC and soared to great heights as the Grand of PA Commander for the new millennium (1999-2000). There was no stopping Ray as he became International Supreme MOC Commander in 2005. Ray continued to spend constructive and meaningful hours with the veterans. As a lung cancer survivor for the last 14 years of his life he accumulated more than 3,500 hours at the Veterans Administration Hospitals. He had a direct effect on the VFW affairs beyond Bloomfield, Pittsburgh, and Pennsylvania. Sound decision making, strong leadership ability, and incredible relationships with others who served their Country helped to sustain the mission of the VFW for the past three decades. Ironically, he did not take his last breath until Veterans Day 2012 was over. He passed away in peace the day after – November 12, 2012.

From the Desk of Principal Lisa GallagherWoolslair School Pittsburgh Woolslair Pre K-5 has submitted a proposal to become a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) magnet. It is our goal to increase enrollment by attracting students not only in our feeder pattern who have to choose other schools such as charter or private, but to also attract other students. STEAM is an interdisciplinary approach to education that strives to show children how things relate to the real world. It is a creative, innovative approach connecting learning concepts and strategies.
