Mario’s Love Life: An Epic Journey

Oh Peach, why must your love be a hassle?I trampled King Bowser; now he is dead!

Why must you be in another castle?I should have been a good plumber instead.

Now I must conquer seven more bases,So that I can find my lovable girl.

But you are not there, there are no traces!“Mama mia!” My head starts to whirl.

Could this be true? Is the Princess okay?Hopefully she did not suffer from death.

Did she find someone else to save her day?I can no longer even take a breath.

I found her! I found her! She is just fine. She is safe! She is safe! And she’s still mine.

ReflectionI chose Mario and Peach to be the character’s of my love poem because they are

considered childish cartoon characters, which makes describing their love for each other to be more comical than that of two real people who are in a relationship. In addition to this, I already had a fair amount of prior knowledge about the Mario franchise, which made creating my poem easier. The tone of my poem to is distressed and hopeless because it emphasizes all of the things that Mario suffers through in order to find his true love, which is a comical way to think about Mario’s adventures. My poem emphasizes the determination of Mario and the overall absence of the princess to show how Mario works so hard to earn the princess’s love, whereas all princess Peach has to do is wait for Mario to find her. My entire sonnet is an example of situational irony because one would expect Mario to be depicted as a brave hero who conquers all his foes with ease; he is instead depicted as a stressed out lover who grow weary of conquering kingdom after kingdom without finding his princess. “I can no longer even take a breath” is a hyperbole because Mario could still breath, he was just very worried. Making each line 10 syllables was a challenge for me because there were some things that I had to insert/delete things in my story, which was not what I would prefer. I enjoyed this activity because it allowed me to make a humorous spinoff of one of my favorite games.
