How many of you would like your chapter membership to grow more that you could ever imagine? DKG has a membership plan that can help you. Please make sure that your Second Vice President/Membership Chairman or representatives from your chapter attend the Leadership Development Workshop in Pineville on June 4. The new Guidelines for Chapter Membership will be presented. Completing forms properly will also be presented as well as due dates and where to send the forms. See you in June!

Spring 2016

Gwen Traylor, State Recording Secretary

I had such a wonderful time in Bossier City. Dolores, Martha, and their committees planned an outstanding convention. I was especially proud that thirty-two of our fifty-two chapters earned key chapter status. Congratulations to

each of you. Be at the Leadership Training June 6 so I can help more chapters qualify in 2017.

First Timers

Meshel Frasier and Carrie Brock, Zeta chapter

As the Zeta chapter worked together to put together our “Celebration Basket” for the state convention, anticipation began to build in us. This was the first Delta Kappa Gamma State Convention Carrie and I would attend. At our meetings each of the other members would try to explain all the different activities in which we would participate, but even those explanations weren’t enough to prepare us for the fun filled weekend. When Carrie and I arrived at the convention, the Alpha Sigma chapter greeted us enthusiastically. We were directed to the First Timers room where we received a light breakfast and a goodie bag. After visiting with different first timers, Judy Rongey, and Dr. Beverly Helms, we decided to look at all the “Celebration Baskets”. We were astounded by all the different extravagant fun filled baskets. There was such a variety it was hard to choose just one. Thankfully, there is not a limit on how many baskets you bid on or how many tickets you may purchase. After purchasing our tickets and writing our names on EVERY SINGLE ONE, (Note to self-make labels for next year) we found the baskets that we wanted the most. Carrie and I placed our tickets in the bags and hoped for a win!

Next, we went to the information table and found envelopes with our names on them. Debney Biggs from our chapter had left us each a rose sticker for our nametags. As time drew closer for our meeting to start, Carrie and I went into the conference room to find seats. It was very inspiring to see all the different members of Delta Kappa Gamma in attendance. There were several that were unable to attend due to the recent flooding in our state. After the meeting, we had different workshops we could choose to attend. Carrie and I chose to attend two different workshops on music. Both of the workshops were useful information we could pass on to our teachers. Then, we settled at the table for the Birthday Luncheon. Although the menu was lacking for vegetarians, we enjoyed our time visiting with those at our table. The skits were so much fun. During this time a collection was taken up for some of the flood victims. One of the things I love most about Delta Kappa Gamma is the way we are always looking for ways to help others. This experience was very enjoyable. We look forward to next year!

Celebrating Our PastCelebrating Our PastCelebrating Our PastCelebrating Our Past----Advancing Our FutureAdvancing Our FutureAdvancing Our FutureAdvancing Our Future A Message from State President Judy Rongey

CelebratingCelebratingCelebratingCelebrating!!!! We made it through the rain to Bossier City for the 82nd Epsilon State

Convention. With 162 members able to attend, we had a convention that definitely will be a “Celebration to

Last throughout the Years!” As I turned into the Pre-Function Hallway of the convention, tears formed in my eyes as I saw how DKG members worked together to make the necessary program adjustments, making this convention one I will always remember. Our celebration began with wonderful fish at the Friday Night Fish Fry. A quorum was present at the Executive Board Meeting, allowing us to take care of Epsilon State’s business. Our International guest, Dr. Beverly Helms, made it from Florida through the storm and greeted us warmly. Afterwards, we socialized while enjoying music and tasty goodies at the Louisiana Hayride. On Saturday morning, nineteen first timers joined together for a breakfast to celebrate their first convention. The First General Session began with the Haughton High School AFJROTC presenting the colors with precision. Epsilon State’s Friend of Education award went to Dr. Ralph Abraham of Monroe, who electronically accepted the award and thanked us. Exciting invitations, including a video featuring International President Dr. Lyn Schmid, were extended to the 2016 International Convention in Nashville, the fall district meetings, and the 2017 Epsilon State Convention at the New Orleans Airport Hilton. After the general session, we enjoyed seven informative workshops about gardening, singing, early childhood movement, computer apps, birthday cakes, newsletters and websites. During our Bayou Birthday Bash, we celebrated forty-seven members for their dedication to DKG for twenty-five years to over seventy-two years of membership and over thirty individual members who received professional awards. The Haughton High School cheerleaders graciously served our birthday cake! At our Saturday Night Gala, thirty-two chapters who received Key Chapter Awards and thirty-six chapters who received the Newsletter Award really celebrated! Our immediate Past State President, Martha Turner, was honored with the 2016 Epsilon State Achievement Award. Alpha Lambda chapter was honored with the Fleur

de Lis Service Award for the project “An Evening with Great Authors.” Dr. Beverly Helms, our keynote speaker, delivered an enlightening presentation about our space in DKG. On Sunday morning at the Celebration of Life, we remembered fourteen members who passed since our last convention. A delicious “Brunch at Louisiana Downs” ended our celebration. Thanks to everyone who made this a convention to remember, especially the convention chairmen, the state officers, the Northwest district chapters, the district directors, the committee members, the presenters, and all of our DKG members present and at home.

Mindful of our sisters…I wish more of our members could have joined us, but know we were thinking

of you. Annette Carr spearheaded a collection for the Florence Amy Emergency Fund to benefit those members who experienced major loss during the historic rainfall and flooding this March. Thanks to the members at the convention who contributed over $1,200 to this fund. To assist in this recovery, Epsilon State and International have presented five of our Epsilon State members with financial aid.

Forward moving ever…We need to spring forward to advance our future. Our chapters are looking for

officers to lead them this next biennium. They need you. You may say “I’m not ready” or “I don’t know what to do.” DKG has many opportunities to help you develop your skills, gain the confidence to lead, and network with others with common goals. The Epsilon State Leadership Committee and the Epsilon state officers are planning an informative workshop in June to help you if you step up and agree to serve your chapter. The New Officers’ Training will be in Pineville on June 4th. The 2016 International Convention in Nashville in July will also have many workshops to prepare you in moving forward to advance your chapter, your state and DKG!

Let’s Keep Celebrating and Advancing…Together!

Congressman Abraham Recognized with Friend of Education Award Article and pictures submitted by Lori Myers, Theta Chapter

Representative Ralph Abraham of Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District was named the 2016 Friend

of Education by the Louisiana State organization of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. The award recipient was announced during the 82nd Annual State Convention held in Bossier City on March 11-13, 2016. Although Congressman Abraham could not attend the convention, he did send a video message conveying his appreciation for the award. Ashley Allen (Alpha Alpha Chapter), NE representative on the Legislative Committee, met with Congressman Abraham to present the award on Friday, April 1 in his district office in Monroe, LA.

Congressman Abraham, whose district covers 24 parishes in Louisiana, was nominated for the honor by the Ruston chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. In the nomination packet, Theta chapter commended Congressman Abraham for the character, integrity, hard work and dedication that he has exhibited through his professional and community service and in his first year as a U. S. House of Representatives member. During his first year, he has visited campuses and communities throughout the district to learn more about key education issues and their contributions to local, state, and national initiatives. He has spoken to students and faculty about the importance of hard work, education, and leadership. Further, Dr. Abraham’s positions on House committees ensure that students and educational institutions in the 5th District are well-represented. His advocacy efforts on issues directly and indirectly related to and impacting education are appreciated.

The Friend of Education Award was created in 2011 to recognize a legislator who is a proponent of education and one who supports teachers and students. Nominations for the Friend of Education award are accepted annually in January. The award recipient is named in March. Nominees must be a Louisiana Legislator at the local, parish, state or national level.

Start Screaming Sisters!!!

Beth Dawson, Epsilon State Legislative Chairman

Get involved with legislation because the laws that our legislators pass have a direct impact on all our lives. Think about it....schools, education, common core, salaries, and retirement to name just a few. The legislative committee feels it's extremely important that all of us and all of our chapters become Screaming Sisters.

The legislative committee would love to see all our sisters get involved with legislation. We want so see which Sisters (chapter) is screaming the loudest to help all of us. The loudest chapter will win the Screaming Sister contest. The Screaming Sister contest started at the 2015 District Meetings and will end in January 2017.

THE RESEARCH COMMITTEE WANTS YOU!!

The Research Committee has been compiling information about Epsilon State Past Presidents. If you attended State Convention, you got to see the display of each president and the theme used for her biennium and/or convention.

Now, they would like your help in learning more about the past presidents. What can you tell us about them? Do you know a hobby, a favorite past-time, a favorite food, musically talented (how), a writer, a poet, a teaser who most people thought was always very serious, or any other fun thing you can share about one (or more) of them? Can you share what made up their family?

We also want to know how they may have affected some part of education. What was their role in education? Did they work for teacher’s rights? Were they a member of special group? Maybe you have a special memory about a past president that you would like to share. Please share that with us in 25 words or less.

Please send your comments to [email protected].

A Thank you note from

Epsilon State International Guest Dr. Beverly Helms

I hope you will convey my deepest appreciation and heartfelt admiration of the members of Epsilon State Organization. Those who were able to join us in Bossier City for the convention are to be commended for their tenacity and courage for navigating the highways and detours to get there.. Those who were unable to get there, while disappointed, gained in the convention via emails, Tweets, and Facebook. Everyone felt their support, and thoughts. My thoughts and prayers are also with your members who lost everything in their homes due to the flooding. Adversity brings out the best in some people and that is what I witnessed in Bossier City! I shall always treasure the opportunity of being able to participate in “A Celebration to last throughout the years.” Dolores and Martha were outstanding in their coordination of convention activities and Judy provided amazing leadership. I am in awe of the professionalism that was displayed by all. Your example of the use of caucusing in regard to the International elected officers could be a model for other state organizations. I loved the First Timers efforts and to be able to fund your first timers to regional conferences and International Conventions is outstanding. Having my dear friend, Peggy King, introduce me so elegantly made me feel like royalty! It was an event that I shall never forget and I hope you will share my deepest and most sincere appreciation to all your members.

Thanks, Beverly Helms
