The South Side UCC churches have been meeting since last fall to determine how we might help feed the hungry, especially school age children, this summer. The usual hurdles faced us: how will we fund it, who will staff it (translation: how many volunteers will be needed AND how many volunteers can we expect) and the mountain of details of actually doing it. We had a working model from a small church in Cahokia. We had a number of committed clergy and lay people from Carondelet, Grace, Mt. Tabor, Trinity, Epiphany and Eden. The major stumbling block, though, centered around the facts of handling and serving food. Health Department kitchen certification? Yes, 1 or 2 options were present. Park Department permits? Depended on the park. Do we buy prepackaged food? Can we partner with St. Louis School Districts (yes, then we don’t know, then probably)? Do we….? The bottom line is we have partnered with the Department of Human Services’ Youth Summer Program. The advantages of this has been food supplied at no cost through a USDA program and recognition of the program throughout the city, smoothing the path for city park use permission. However, food safety and record keeping training is re-quired and the logistics of receiving the meals on a daily basis has had a bump or two in the road. Nonetheless, thanks to yeoman’s work by Rev. Carole Barner, the first week of deliv-ery hiccups have been weathered and we are off and running. Carondolet, Grace and Mt. Tabor have served; Trinity is up next. Eden and St. Paul (City) will team up the week of August 1. There are several open days in mid-July as well. I encourage you to look for our sign-up sheet in the Upper Room and help out a day or two (or more!), from 11 am – 1:30 pm at the playground area shelter of Benton Park (near Arsenal & Missouri). Even if you have not received food safety training, your help is needed and appreciated to play some games or read some books or just lend a hand. We are hopeful that our experience this year will guide us for the possibility of serving at more than one site next summer. Pastor Paul

Pastor Paul

In the last month, I attended the Affton Christian Food Pantry board meeting, the ACFP strategic plan meeting, the ACFP Executive Board meeting, food safety training for the South Side church summer lunch program and two days of the Missouri Mid-South Conference Annual gathering. I also dropped in on the South Side Summer Lunch program at Benton Park one day to see how it runs.

I officiated the funeral and burial of Alyce Ficken and conducted a memorial service in the sanctuary for the family of Kay Klodt (attended briefly some years back and indicat-ed her wishes for a service at Eden). We also received into membership Rev. Bruce Moeller. I made seven pastoral visits.

Tammy Kutrip, Susan Solsten, a number of other volunteers and I conducted our first Book Fair at the ACFP. We served 60 children and distributed over 150 books. The Lit-tle Free Library has been registered and a sign will be posted on its face. Also, yard signs have been ordered to be placed on the appropriated street corners and parking lot entrances directing folks to the library. The remaining inventory of books will be used to stock our LFL and we have offered some to Grace UCC in return for their do-nation of the library to us. We plan on submitting another literacy grant application this Summer to fund these efforts in the coming year.

Miscellaneous items: The mesh has been removed from the front of the organ pipes. We are awaiting a

bid on replacement and will discuss then next steps. A “New This Week” header has been added to Mid-Week announcements to facili-

tate a quick read of the email. We are in the final stages of ordering a plaque for the new stove. I have initiated a meeting of the ramp committee.

A Brief Financial Update Through May 31, 2016:

Year-to-date (YTD) actual expenses of $56,168 are ~$7000 below budget; Remember, though, budgeted expenses, are higher than last year (pastor at full time, health insurance premiums, etc.); YTD, General Fund member giving through envelopes is 98.6% of last year’s giving through May;

the General Fund balance is -$5248; YTD, the Building Fund (profits from our rental houses) is +$5416.

Our financial position has stabilized and at the moment, our income (offerings & rental property proceeds) meets our expenses. We do have a significant air conditioning system repair in front of us. Helping to offset that will be $2000 in unbudgeted building use income through the remainder of the year.
