DISTRICT XIII 4-H LIFE 3
Michelle Barrientos – D13 President
How many years have you been in 4-H? This will be my 9th and final year.
What is your project study this year? My final project study is Citizenship, Leadership & Community Service
What is your favorite 4-H event and why? My all around favorite 4-H Event has to be State Legislature because it gives youth a chance to step out of their comfort zone and have new experiences learning all about our government and the legislative process... all while meeting incredible 4-H'ers and making new memories!
What is one important thing you’ve learned while being a part of 4-H that you will be able to use in the future? While this may not be the answer everyone is expecting, one important thing I've learned in 4-H that will help me tremendously in my future is that you're not always going to get what you want, and there will be times when you fail and you're going to have to accept that and go on with life.
Why did you choose to run for the D13 Officer position you presently hold? My 4-H career really took off when I joined 4-H and I wouldn't be the leader I am if it weren't for everyone in 13. I ran for President as a chance to give back to the district that gave me so much... one last time. What goals do you want to fulfill as a District Council officer? As President I want to fulfill all the goals we set out to accomplish but my #1 goal would be to make sure we have a successful year as a council while making new memories with each other!
What club, county, or state positions do you hold? This year I am serving as your District President as well as an executive board delegate. What advice would you like to share with other 4-H'ers in District 13? Appreciate the amount of work and effort that goes into running our council to be the absolute best. Say thank you to all the adult volunteers, be grateful of your officers and committee chairs, do everything you possibly can in district because before you know it you'll be graduating high school and you're going to want to have so many incredible memories to look back on. Tell us a couple of fun facts about yourself (favorite color, hobby, holiday and why) Something not a lot of you would probably know about me is that one day, in the near future, I hope to travel the world.
Eva Ducanis – D13 Vice-President
How many years have you been in 4-H? I have been in 4-H for 9 years.
What is your project study this year? My project study this year is Healthy Living.
What is your favorite 4-H event and why? My favorite 4-H event is District XIII Mock Legislature because it introduced me to the legislative process. I also learned debating skills and how to value other people's opinions.
What is one important thing you’ve learned while being a part of 4-H that you will be able to use in the future? Through 4-H, I have learned the importance of teamwork in accomplishing common goals.
Why did you choose to run for the D13 Officer position you presently hold? I chose to run for a D13 office because I wanted to serve the 4-H program by offering my unique set of leadership skills for the benefit of the Council.
What goals do you want to fulfill as a District Council officer? My goal this year is to assist the President achieve our District XIII goals.
What club, county, or state positions do you hold? I hold the position of historian of my club, as well as Secretary of the Florida 4-H state
council.
What advice would you like to share with other 4-H'ers in District 13? I would tell other 4-H'ers in District 13 to take advantage of the activities and programs within the 4-H program, because it will benefit you in countless ways.
Tell us a couple of fun facts about yourself (favorite color, hobby, holiday and why) I really enjoy running: it's really relaxing and it clears my thoughts. My favorite food is cake.

Broward by Danielle O’Connor
Broward held their first County Council meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the Broward County
Extension office. The county council's event planning committee is in the process of planning Broward's 2015-2016
Achievement Night, which will be held on Friday, October 21, 2016. The council voted to approve a county wide
Operation Christmas Child project called "4-Hundred Boxes of Love", and is encouraging Broward clubs and District XIII
members to get involved. On Tuesday September 20th, Broward will hold a National Youth Science Day (NYSD) training
for intermediate and senior 4-H'ers interested in being facilitators at four scheduled Broward National Youth Science
Day Events during the 2016-2017 year. Club Highlight: The Nutty Nutritionist club is excited about starting their
second year as a 4-H club! With five members attending Broward's three day officer training camp in August, and three
members attending the first county council meeting, they sure are off to a great start! Broward 4-H'ers, Danielle
O'Connor, Shane O'Connor and Madeline Rowe will compete at the 4-H State Tailgating Championship in Gainesville this
Saturday September 10, 2016. Our next Council meeting is scheduled for October 4, 2016.
Miami-Dade by Felicity Akers
Miami-Dade County elected Felicity A as President, Esther C as VP, Samantha H as Secretary, Lorenzo H as Treasurer,
Christian B as Chaplain, and Joseph B as Parliamentarian. Currently the offices open are Reporter, Historian and Sgt. at
Arms. Samantha and Lorenzo H, Michelle B, and Felicity A were appointed to the Executive Board. We held our first
officer training on August 13th, where we covered the responsibilities of the officers, expectations from the agent, our
goals for the year, parliamentary procedures, and the art of time management. We had a representative from Dominos
discuss the benefits of fundraising with them. Club Highlight: On Saturday, August 27, 2016 Mr. Jeramy, Miami-Dade
County Agent, and Miss Alex, Broward County Agent, taught our West Kendall 4-H Club and our Miami -Dade president
how to teach Animal Science in the schools. This class was held at Bill Sadowski Park. All the participants are excited to
be able to teach this subject in the coming months. Our next County Council meeting is September 12th, where we will
install the new officers.
Palm Beach by Mackenzie Viau
A great summer topped off another awesome year for Palm Beach County 4-H. Youth attended 4-H Legislature, 4-H
University as well as Leadership Washington Focus in Washington DC. A variety of summer programs were also held
including Maker Camp and Marine Biology Camp. Two youth from Japan were hosted by Palm Beach County 4-H
families during the Florida 4-H Summer Exchange Program. In addition, two teacher/volunteer trainings were
conducted 1) Indoors and Out: Environmental Science Training in partnership with US Fish and Wildlife and 2) 4-H STEM
Institute in partnership with Miami-Dade and Broward 4-H. Youth participation during the 2015/2016 4-H year
increased dramatically from 8,000 during the previous year to over 14,000. The summer ended on a fine note with the
4-H Achievement and Appreciation night. Over 130 youth and their families attended for project awards, outstanding
member recognition, officer installation and recognition of New Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and
Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer. Efforts are currently underway to develop a sister “county” exchange program with the
Stora Skuggans 4-Hgard program in Sweden.
