    INSPIRING SUCCESS

Dear Parents/Caregivers, Students and Friends of Reynella East College,

The term is rapidly coming to a close, reports

have been sent home and parent interviews

have been completed, while year 12students are making preparations for their

nal assessments and exams. In this last

reporting period, teachers in Maths, Science,

English and History have begun using the

Australian Curriculum grades. As you know,

all States across Australia have nally agreed

to developing and implementing a National

curriculum from years 110 the Australian

Curriculum. I have to say that I am delighted

with this development and hope that the

new Australian Government will continue the

development of a truly national curriculumacross all year levels.

One of the signicant changes in the

new curriculum has been the setting of

standards for each year level and in each

subject that students must reach before

they be given a C grade. The standards

encompass a wide range of knowledge and

skills within each subject that must be tested

in a variety of ways before teachers make

a nal judgement at the end of the year

whether students have met the requiredstandard or not. To help teachers make

    that judgement the Australian Curriculum

    Assessment and Reporting Authority -

    www.acara.edu.au has provided a

set of exemplars for each subject and

for each year level. All of the curriculum

materials can be accessed online at

    www.australiancurriculum.edu.au.

As you will be able to see from the ACARA

website there is still quite a bit of work to

do before the entire curriculum can be

implemented in our schools, and as a

consequence teachers will be involved in

    considerable training and development

for some time to come so that they can

accurately make the judgements about the

    students attainment of the standards.

In South Australia, the Australian Curriculum

has had an immediate impact on the Maths

and Science curriculum across years 79

as the new curriculum has included at year

7 many of the areas traditionally taught in

year 8. The reason is that in South Australia

grade 7 is part of Primary school and not

part of High School. It appears that the

other States, grade 7 is already or about

to move into secondary schooling. We are

fortunate at Reynella East in that our Grade7s can very easily become more closely

    linked with the secondary program.

While we are in the midst of this major

curriculum change, we are also and nally

nearing the end of our building program.

We are still waiting for the four new

classrooms for the Primary section of the

school, but all of the other buildings have

been completed. The majority of the work

recently has been on the grounds with the

tennis courts and the eastern roadway the

nal works funded in the Education Works

program. This is not likely to be nished

until the end of January/early February

2014. Never-the less, we have scheduled

the opening of the buildings at the end of

November 2013. Through all of this I have

been delighted with the behaviour and

forbearance of our students as they have

coped with room changes, yard restrictions

and mud so much mud this year- and

have still got on with the job of learning.

    MUSIC NEWS

    Music Night

The annual combined College Music Night

was held in June this year. Students worked

hard to prepare a variety of items for their

    parents, teachers and friends.

The Band, Primary and Secondary school Choirs performed, along

with various soloists. Both Year 9 and 10 class bands displayed

songs they had learnt in Semester 1 and the Percussion

Ensemble, conducted by David Hopgood, presented a popular

snare/tom tom work. The new music uniforms were worn for therst time at Music Night this year and displayed our students in

    a very professional way.

    SNOW TRIP

    REC 2013 Snow Trip

During the second week of term 3, 22 students and 3 sta

(Karen Pearce, Geo Whitford and Lauren Green) headed

o for a week in Howmans Gap, Falls Creek. After the long

14 hour bus trip we were greeted by beautiful, white snow.

The weather on the rst day wasnt overly ash; a thick fog had blown in overnight and we

could barely see our hand in front of our face! Although everyone managed to get some

    skiing or snowboarding in.

The next three days were much better, with sunshine and clear skies and we were able to get

in alot more skiing/snowboarding. With the help of lessons, everyone improved and with theweather on our side we were soon going down some of the harder and more challenging runs.

Unfortunately our luck ran out on the last day and the fog came back but still we managed to

get some runs done. Aside from a couple of injuries, the snow trip was very successful, with

everyone enjoying themselves and many looking forward to going again next year.

    MULTI-ARTS PRODUCTION

    Multi-Arts Production 2013

This years Multi-Arts Production held at the Hopgood

Theatre on 22nd August celebrated the Music, Drama,

Dance, Media and Visual Arts from both the primary and the

high school. Our paper plane theme was used as a symbol

of hope and personal journey and the image of the paper

plane appeared as a dramatic device throughout the show.

The Year 7 Wakakirri dance One World, One Hope, One Dream was

performed early in the evening and combined dance story telling with

backlit projections to show global journeys. Other highlights of primary

school performances included the Festival Choir songs, Aboriginal danceand a short lm about what makes a good friend.

The school band led by Ms Rykroft, played their upbeat Moves Like Jagger

and other current repertoire followed with soloist Siobhan Flemwells Born

to Try and the Year 10 Vocal Ensemble with piano accompaniment by Mr

Helps and Ms Harding. Media clips interspersed the live performances,

highlighting our Arts on lm and the collaboration between drama, dance

    media and the visual arts.

Mr Trebilcos Year 11 drama scene California Dreamin was presented as a very funny comedy

sketch and captured the energy and talent in our drama students. This was contrasted with a

poignant scene of newly found love and friendship in the short drama Boy Meets Girl whichintroduced the choir song Lucky. Drama and music collaboration continued with the Man

in the Mirror combined choir song set to lmed images of Year 8 masked drama. Ms Jarvis

conducted both the primary and high school choir and supported her students even though

she was ocially away on leave!

Featured soloists included Lucy Riletts Faure Flute solo and Elika Erginas vocal solo A

Thousand Years. Solo dancer Patti Pradzynska and the Gravity Dance Group also punctuated

moments of vibrant Hip Hop dance. Larger ensemble performances included the high energy

Year 9 dances, the paper plane masked drama scenes and the Stage 1 Creative Arts dance

duo and trio who delivered an excellent standard of contemporary dance.

The night could not have been possible without the dedication of our students who rehearsed

diligently to prepare for the event. Our student sound and audio visual operator Tom Jacksonenabled the show to have smooth transitions in between items with his precise cues.

The Visual Art student display provided by Mr Scholed, Ms Chai and Ms Wilson was also

appreciated by families in the theatre foyer on the night. Thank you to all of our families who

supported the students in their preparation. Many thanks to the teachers who volunteered

before and after school, and during lunch times in the lead up to this special event. Well done

to all who participated as it was truly a night to remember!
