We are preparing for our annual monitoring from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce. They will here for one week. They will review all programs that are funded by ODOC. Our annual monitoring from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services DD Division completed their monitoring visit with no problems. They also bragged on how we oper-ate our programs. We also received a perfect audit report with no findings and no exceptions. They also bragged on our financial de-partment staff. Our funding at the federal level continues to remain flat. President Trump has zeroed out our CSBG and Weatheriza-tion Programs in his proposed budgets but the Congress re-stored them. Our Head Start Programs will receive a slight increase. The state legislature has not indicated what our state budgets will be. We are hoping for at least flat funding. Remember that we are the voice of the elderly, handi-capped, poor, and needy in our service area. Keep up the fine work that you are doing each day. As you enjoy this beautiful spring season with your family and friends please remember the brave men and women who wear the uniform of our country who are now in harms way. Please pray for their safety and pray for the leaders of our nation.

The Healthy Living Program has been busy educating youth in the Haskell/Latimer County area about how "Big Tobac-co" companies are losing thousands of customers daily from tobacco related diseases. In order to continue with profits they have to get "Replacement Smokers". "Big Tobacco" look at our youth as numbers for their own profit. The kids in our community are being taught to help make a stand against cigarettes, Vapors (e-cigarettes) and smokeless (dip) tobacco. We are against the "Big Tobacco" companies not the smoker. We know how hard it is to quit, we advocate for "Be Smart, Don't Start!". Vapors are targeting our youth with sweet flavors and getting them hooked at an alarming rate. "Big Tobacco" companies call these sweet flavored e-cigarettes and cigars, "Starter packs". Our goal is to be the first generation to be tobacco free. For more information see: https://www.tobaccofreekids.org/ or join your local SWAT/ YAB youth group. The SWAT /YAB groups meet once a month. For more information on joining your local group, call Kathy Healy or Denice Daniels at 918-967-9992 or Latimer County contact Jen-nie Skimbo at 918-465-3381.

Legal Assistance...No Longer a Barrier With a grant through the Victims of Crime Act, Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma (LASO) partnered with Domestic Violence (DV) Programs across the state to establish embedded attorneys in DV shelters. LASO is the provider of civil legal services to low income persons across our state. In February, attorney Jared Snedden joined LASO and the KI BOIS Domestic Violence Shelters in Stigler and McAlester as a full time attorney. Jared is a native of Sherman, TX and is new to the McAlester area. He began practicing law in 2013 working for the Oklahoma Indigent Defense System and has worked in private practice as well. He is recently married and has a 5 month old son, Jason, named after his late brother. “I’ve spent most of my career helping indigent individuals,” Jared said, “I’ve found, based on my experience, that it is really difficult for an abused woman to prosecute her case.” Legal issues for survivors of domestic violence goes beyond protection orders and in-cludes custody/visitation, division of property, debts, housing, employment, immigration, taxes, access to health, education and more. In 2016, LASO saw a need for access to legal help for victims of domestic violence and proposed to provide a full time attorney to be embedded within the KI BOIS shelter locations. LASO recognized that for many survivors getting to a lawyer from a shelter post violence was not easy. It is intimidating, expensive and what if someone sees her at the attorney’s office. “One of the most common unmet needs for the victims that we serve is the lack of re-sources and funds for legal issues. A victim often won’t leave their abusive partner simply because they may not have legal custody of a child. The abuser may have told them they will take their child or their home and money. That is a scary feeling and only one of many scenarios that would keep a victim in an abusive relationship. So, to have access to free, immediate legal assistance is no longer a barrier for victims in Haskell and Pittsburg counties” said Anne Peck, KI BOIS Domestic Violence Program Director. Simply put, Jared stated he joined the LASO team “to help people”. We believe he is going to be a valuable asset to the Domes-tic Violence Shelters and LASO team.
