Wearing white clothes during Yom Kippur

By Rabbi Rami Pavolotzky

People customarily wear white clothes on Yom Kippur. Some peo-ple dress completely in white, some people wear a kitle (a white robe) on top of their clothes, and some people try to wear something white, like a shirt, a blouse, a tie… or at least a white kippa! Rabbi Daniela and I would love to have the synagogue filled with congre-gants dressed in white clothes on Yom Kippur. Let me explain to you why.

This custom is a very old one; as it appears first in the Jerusalem Tal-mud, “Jews on Yom Kippur… wear white and cover themselves in white” (Rosh Hashanah 1:3, fol. 57b). However, why do we wear white clothes in Yom Kippur? There are many traditional reasons. Let’s review the most well-known of them:

1) White is a symbol of purity: On Yom Kippur our sins are hopefully forgiven by God; thus, we emerge from it without sins, as pure souls. As it is written in the book of the prophet Isaiah (1:18), “If your sins be like scarlet, they shall be white as snow”. We wear white to show how we feel inside, or how we hope to feel inside when Yom Kippur ends.

2) To resemble the angels: Rabbi Moses Isserles, in his commentary

to the Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim 610:4) explains that it is the Ashkenazi custom to wear white to resemble the angels. Actually, there are other laws and customs that we observe on Yom Kippur that make us look like angels, like not eating and drinking, standing during much of the services, saying Baruch Shem aloud, etc.

3) To dress as a dead person: The Kitel, and in general simple white clothes, are similar to shrouds Ac-cording to Rabbi Isserles, dressing like the dead on Yom Kippur helps us to feel humble and to regret our sins. Other sages explain that because on Yom Kippur our fate is decided, we are virtually like dead people until Yom Kippur ends. Only when we are forgiven and pardoned, do we regain our lives.

4) To show we are joyful: White is also the symbol of joy, as opposed to black. We dress in whites because we are confident that God will forgive us during Yom Kippur. As the same source from the Jerusalem Talmud quoted above says, “Generally, when a man knows he faces judgment, he wears black [clothing], robes himself in black, and lets his beard grow, for he does not know the outcome of the judgment. But not so Israel, who wear white [clothing], robe them-selves in white, shave their beards, and eat and drink and are joyful, knowing that God, blessed be He, per-forms miracles for them.” Of course, the eating and drinking is reserved for before and after Yom Kippur (!).

There are other reasons that were given to explain why we wear white clothing during Yom Kippur, but I be-lieve these are the most important and significant ones. It is worth noting that not only do we wear whites, but we also use white ark cur-tains, white Torah mantles and white table covers on the High Holy Days,

and especially on Yom Kippur.

Joy, humility, purity, willingness to elevate our souls… these all are great qualities that we want to ex-perience during Yom Kippur. The prayers, the melodies of the pray-ers, the fast, etc., help us to feel these emotions. I do believe that wearing white clothes also tremen-dously helps us to achieve our spir-itual goals during Yom Kippur. What a beautiful experience it is to pray in a synagogue where every-body wears white clothes!

Therefore, Rabbi Daniela and I want to invite you to consider wearing white clothes during this coming Yom Kippur. What could you do? You could buy a Kitel (you can easily order it online!), use the white clothes that you already have, or at least try to dress in something white, as I mentioned before. Of course, nobody will criticize you if you decide not to wear white clothes. This is not a policy, but rather just a suggestion.

So please consider wearing white during this Yom Kippur, or even for next Yom Kippur, if this article ar-rives too late for you to alter your clothing this year. I hope you enjoy the unique feeling of “praying in white” on Yom Kippur, as I enjoy it every year.

Bebirkat Ktiva Vechatima Tova!

May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year!

Rami

MESSAGE FROM RABBI RAMI

Volume 69, No. 2 High Holidays October 2016 Temple Beth El Page 3

Dave Ehrlich Gary Kogon Before looking ahead to the New Year, we want to look back to the end of August when we held our synagogue open house/meet the Rabbis event. It was very success-ful. Many of our members turned out for an afternoon of food and socializing and several new faces dropped by to learn about Temple Beth El. Many thanks to the mem-bers of the Membership Outreach/Retention Committee for planning the event and the Communications Committee for publicizing it. October promises to be a busy month with Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot all occurring this month. We are looking forward to spending our first High Holidays with Rabbis Daniela and Rami. We are pleased that Rabbi Chaim Galfand will return again this year as Cantor.

Preparations for the High Holidays require much volunteer effort. Spe-cial thanks to members of the Exec-utive Committee for preparing the High Holiday information packet that you received in the mail and for planning the meal events. We are also grateful to the members of the Religious Practices Committee for planning the services and distrib-uting the honors. These are neces-sary and time-consuming tasks and we thank everyone involved. We would be remiss in not thanking our staff members Janet Lefever and Carol Kappen for all that they do to ensure that we are ready for the

High Holidays.

Also in October, there will also be a Beth Pomerantz Education Series pro-gram on October 22 featuring a movie and dinner.

In other synagogue news, repairs to the retaining wall at our cemetery began. The wall had deteriorated and the repairs being done should stabilize it for many years to come. Thank you to the Cemetery Committee for attending to these much needed re-pairs.

Finally, your Board of Directors took the first step in identifying the goals and objectives that we want to achieve this year. This will give us direction and focus. We will share these with you in a subsequent bulle-tin.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy and

sweet New Year. Shana Tovah

u’Metukah!

Classes have started for Sunday School and Hebrew School. We welcome our returning families as well as our new families to anoth-er exciting year here at

Temple Beth-El Religious School. We are very excited be-cause we have enthusiastic students and teachers. Our revamped curric-ulum has helped our teachers devel-op more purposed lesson plans and are taking every opportunity to make learning fun and meaningful to all the students. The flexibility that our small school offers allow us to adapt better to the student's needs and abilities, making their learning more focused.

Throughout the year the students will be doing their Mitzvots. Be on the lookout for students that are showing random acts of kindness or respecting others. If you see any, please share that with me or one of the teachers so we can recognize them for living what they are learn-ing. Rabbis Daniela and Rami are putting their caring and thoughtful touch onto many important aspects of the temple. One of them is their desire to include the children in as much as they can. This includes their dedication to the school with both of them teaching a class and leading group activities during the class time.

On a different note, our Religious School continues to collect Box Tops for Education, so if you have any we would gladly take them off your hands. There will be a box set on the table outside the principal's office. that you can drop in. Also be on the lookout for our upcoming HaKaFoT-A-Thon fundraiser we hold

Congregational Thanks Being chosen with Deena Hertz to be Sisterhood’s Woman of the Year was truly an unexpected honor. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Sisterhood and the brunch committee for planning such a beautiful morning. It was so nice coming together and seeing so many of our synagogue friends to enjoy very tasty food and a fun game too. Thank you Rabbi Daniela for the lovely davar torah and Rabbi Rami for blowing the Shofar for us. Responding to congregant’s re-quests for Sisterhood cards has nev-er been a chore because I know the money raised is used to fund our religious school as well as other syn-agogue needs. Once again I’d like to thank you for bestowing this honor on Deena and me. Beverly Rubin Thank you to our friends at Temple Beth El for remembering us on the occasion of our anniversary.
