Volume 5 – Issue 6 Message from the Executive Director Jean-Pierre Beaulieu An outstanding golf season

2017 was my 10th season as Executive Director of Golf Québec and it was, by far, the most exciting. Throughout the summer, we celebrated golf in so many ways, from honouring our most legendary players, amateurs and professionals, and industry builders to celebrating the victories of our provincial golfers, or actively promoting the participation in this great game for which we all share the same passion.

Induction of Debbie Savoy Morel in the Québec Golf Hall of Fame The development of golf is not magical. It requires a vision, it requires efforts, and it is made possible by the hard work accomplished by numerous contributors who all have their own personal strengths to share. In Québec, many have a passion for golf and contribute to the betterment of the game through their actions. This summer, Golf Québec honoured three of them. In June, Bob Vokey, the master of wedge manufacturing, was inducted in the Québec Golf Hall of Fame. The reputation of this Verdun native echoes around the

world. In August, the exceptional competitive and volunteering record of Pierre Archambault, an amateur player who has practically won everything, was celebrated at the Kanawaki Golf Club. Finally, the induction of the very first woman to act as the Head Professional of a 36-hole facility in Canada, Debbie Savoy Morel, gathered the golf industry from here and elsewhere at Golf Le Mirage to recognize her achievements. View the commemorative video clips: Bob Vokey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJub1fnDt-Y&list=PL-6lJXYj8hjSUB0sM6HIMegZMBdMQA05U&index=3 Pierre Archambault: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YD2dtmfT7BM&index=2&list=PL-6lJXYj8hjSUB0sM6HIMegZMBdMQA05U Debbie Savoy Morel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enDvfwlU7mY Québec golfers also were in the limelight with amazing performances on our courses. We obviously had great hopes for the Canada Games, in August, but we never dreamed of a clean podium sweep.  In the girls’ division as well as in the boys’, individually and as a team, the Québec athletes captured the gold in every category. The cherry on the top was a silver medal in the boys’ individual competition. As a matter of fact, Christopher Vandette and Céleste Dao, who both won their respective competitions, are also the provincial junior and amateur champions. Moreover, Vandette is also the Canadian juvenile champion. This truly was a dream come true for these two Summerlea junior members who are leading the Canadian Junior Order of Merit and were recently appointed to the Golf Canada Development Squad.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the inter-provincial victory of our Québec team at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. Comprised of Hugo Bernard, Marc-Olivier Plasse, and Étienne Papineau,

our team dominated the competition and won the Willingdon Cup with an 11-stroke lead. Such performance had never been seen. On the international stage, the competencies of Diane Barabé led her to be recognized as one of the best rules officials. As such, she worked at the Augusta National, Erin Hills, Royal Birkdale, and Glen Abbey golf clubs. Anne-Catherine Tanguay is another woman who fills us with such a sense of pride. The young Québec City golfer reached her optimal goal and earned her 2018 LPGA Tour card. What a great role model for our younger players!

Finally, I said it and I will repeat it, the Golf Québec team is proud of the Get Out, Play Golf campaign. Golf Québec and its industry partners were instrumental to the communication campaign under the theme “Get out, play golf. Over 300 courses await you.” It was implemented and ably delivered by Oasis communication. Throughout the season, this campaign truly created a buzz within the industry. People talked about it. It caught the attention of new and occasional golfers and incited them to play more often. Many thanks to our two ambassadors, Daniel Melançon and Philo Lirette, who actively shared and promoted the campaign on their own social networks. We cannot ask for more and truly hope that 2018 will be as exciting as this golf season. Enjoy the off season, take a little break, and be ready to get out and play golf once again next April. #getoutplaygolf

11th Golf Québec Fundraiser Tournament $67,477 to introduce children to golf

The 11th edition of the Golf Québec Fundraiser Tournament was held on October 2 at Club de golf de la Vallée du Richelieu. Mr. Stéphane Dubé, Past President and current Governor of the club, as well as Constant Priondolo, Head Professional of the club and President of the PGA of Canada in 2014-2015, were Co-Honorary Presidents of the event. This traditional golf celebration was the pinnacle of the “From School to the Golf Club” fundraiser in which $67,477 was collected this year.

http://www.golfquebec.org/pages.asp?id=985 The presentation of this event was made possible by the contribution of key partners including RBC Royal Bank, Park Avenue Group, and Petrie Raymond, accredited professional accountants. For Golf Québec, it was a privilege and an honour to work with RBC at Club de golf de la Vallée du Richelieu and more specifically with Mr. Dubé and Mr. Priondolo. “Our Honorary Co-Presidents accepted the challenge raised by Golf Québec with great enthusiasm. Both of them share a passion for the game of golf. True to high standards in their professional lives, these inspired gentlemen were committed to making a difference and facilitating the transition of children to our golf clubs. They truly were instrumental to the great success of this fundraiser,” confided Jean-Pierre Beaulieu, Executive Director of Golf Québec. From School to the Golf Club Following its tradition, Golf Québec is promoting junior golf development on the theme “From School to the Golf Club”. The main purpose of the Fundraiser Tournament is to raise the money required by Golf Québec to pursue golf development initiatives specifically designed for children and families. The collected funds will be used to pursue the initiatives that facilitate the transition of children from their Golf in Schools introduction program to actually playing at the golf club. This can be done

through golf professional visitations in teaching establishments and Future Links Field Trips to the club. Through eleven editions of this key fundraiser, over $695,000 was collected to promote the sport development of new young golfers.

The Québec City golfer was able to address the participants through a live video conference from Florida where she was playing in her last tournament of the year. In her interview with Daniel Melançon, Anne-Catherine admitted to being very stressed out as she was fully aware that this final event was conditional to earning a place on the LPGA for the 2018 golf season. To do so, she had to finish in the Top-10 of the tour’s money ranking, which was successfully confirmed a few days later.

21 members join forces to make a $10,500 donation La Vallée du Richelieu, take 2! http://www.golfquebec.org/en/News_voir.asp?CodeN=1210

In the month of June, Club de golf de La Vallée du Richelieu and Golf Québec announced that, for the second consecutive year, a $10,500 donation was made by a group of 21 members of the club to support the “From School to the Golf Club” fundraiser.

With this commitment, La Vallée du Richelieu, its management, and members wish to renew their active contribution in sports development initiatives targeting children and families of their area. Altogether, a total of twenty-one members are donating $500 each in order to support existing programs. This is a meaningful way for the club to contribute to the development of golf participation towards youth of the Ste-Julie area. A first donation of $10,000 was collected and announced last year. Many activities were conducted since then, including numerous Future Links introduction clinics gathering over 70 children, golf lessons for youths presented in partnership with the municipality, the adoption of a local school, as well as an outing of the Golfmobile at the Ste-Julie Family Day. More recently, the golf club organized a special celebration for Father’s Day. Extended families of the club members had the opportunity to discover the game of golf and play together. Over 550 persons took part in this exciting activity. Club de golf de la Vallée du Richelieu was also recognized as one of the Junior Golf Development Centres by Golf Québec / Golf Canada. It is one of the most dynamic centres in Québec with a very extensive golf program designed specifically for children. https://youtu.be/2nRkNeTyxmk In 2017, a new Future Links facility project is under way. Rain or shine, it will provide infrastructure where golf introduction activities will be conducted to promote the development of junior players at La Vallée du Richelieu.

Members donors of La Vallée du Richelieu Golf Club with some of their juniors and Golf Québec representatives Make the difference in the region and at the provincial level “Our club has always had the sports development of its member golfers and future players at heart. We feel that it is crucial for our establishment to actively contribute to the expansion of golf in our region by fostering new participants and have a provincial impact as well. We would be thrilled that other golf clubs follow in our footsteps and also grow the game in their communities. Golf Québec is a dynamic corporation that invests a lot of time, money, and energy in implementing programs and supporting golf clubs in their own development structures,” mentioned Stéphane Dubé, a past President and now Governor of La Vallée du Richelieu who is behind this project.

Fundraiser The crucial impact of donations

At the beginning of a new season, you surely are eager to visit your golf club. And you are not the only ones! Many children discover the game in the cold season through the Golf in Schools program and other initiatives, and they just can’t wait to explore it furthermore. That is exactly what we are looking for: more children on the golf courses!

This is why Golf Québec intends on working twice as hard to roll out its golf introduction initiatives designed for children in their schools and municipalities. Key programs supporting this strategy include Golf in Schools, Future Links Field Trips and First Drive, an initiative that facilitates access to the game. Up to now, offensives of the past golf season have had a significant impact. Thanks to the contribution of numerous donors over the past years, we now see 526 elementary schools and 74 high schools where golf is thought within the Phys. Ed. curriculum. In addition, about forty golf clubs are using Future Links driven by Acura. A donation to facilitate the transition “From School to the Golf Club” It is now your turn to make a difference when you will register in a tournament or visit our website. Make an online donation and contribute actively to introducing many children to the game of golf. www.golfquebec.org/donations More than ever, this is why we need the financial support of golf amateurs to stimulate and supervise our youths furthermore. Aside from golf introduction activities targeting children in their daily environment, we also need to facilitate their transition to the golf clubs. This is why your donations are so vital. In the facts, for each donation cumulating $500, we will be able to:

• Equip the school of your choice with the complete Golf in Schools teaching kit and adapted material.

• Organize a Future Links Field Trip in a golf club, enabling many students to have a positive experience on the course.

• Organize an in-school visit with a golf professional, in a special event or city activity.

For each financial contribution of $25 and more, Sports-Québec will remit tax receipts corresponding to the eligible donation on behalf of the Québec Golf Federation. Any donation of $25 and over can also be matched by the Gouvernement du Québec as part of the Placements Sports program. By filling-out this form, you confirm and accept that your donation will be used to support the operations of the Québec Golf Federation.
