D iskeeper 2008 introduces substantial improvements to thecore of the product—the defragmentation engines. Theengines are defined as the processes that make the deci-

sions of how/what/where/when with respect to file and freespace defragmentation.

To properly evaluate Diskeeper 2008 (especially in comparisonto Diskeeper 2007) it is vital to look “under the hood” and eval-uate the higher performing engines up close. The best way to dothis is by testing the software specifically in the complicated envi-ronments which the new improvements are designed to solve.

This paper will describe the defragmentation engine improve-ments and will present development testing results and sum-maries regarding those results. Specific experiments were exe-cuted with set purposes. In many cases the processes are eas-ily reproducible, but in a few of the cases, due to the specificrequirements (such as evaluating the in-progress perform-ance), the results were acquired by proprietary DiskeeperCorporation development tools.

I. Enhanced VSS-CompatibilityOverviewWindows 2003, Windows Vista™ and Windows 2008 include apopular new data backup service called Volume Shadow CopyService (VSS). This service supports the mechanisms to createpoint-in-time copies (snapshots) of data known as shadowcopies. The Microsoft® Windows provided “writer” employs acopy-on-write method, storing only data believed to havechanged. However, due to the operational behavior of this fea-ture, the typical 4KB cluster size (default on volumes less than2TB) can cause unnecessary data snapshot activity in VSS,resulting in excessive data storage.

The brief explanation is that VSS operates at a 16KB clusterlevel, and on volumes that use cluster sizes less than 16KB(e.g., 4KB), VSS will think that non-VSS-aware defragmentation

is actually a change to data. This is due to an “incompatibility”with VSS and the Windows “MoveFile” API (FSCTL_MOVE_FILE)that can cause an unnecessary increase to data storagerequirements and the possible purging of valid VSS data.

This situation can become increasingly relevant for customersemploying Microsoft Data Protection Manager (DPM), as thisalso incurs increased network traffic as the shadow copies aretransferred to the DPM server.

To support Microsoft’s VSS implementation Diskeeper 2008introduces the new VSS-compatibility mode. This option signif-icantly reduces the excess overhead that defragmentation cancause to VSS.

Test ProcedureThe purpose of the tests is to isolate the impact of defrag-mentation to the System Volume Information folder (hiddenfolder in which VSS data is stored). The tests are not designedto evaluate or report on speed or thoroughness of defragmen-tation by the tested products.

1. Fragment (files and free space) a 10 GB non-boot volumeusing a proprietary Diskeeper Corporation utility. This canalso be accomplished by copying numerous files of varyingsize to the volume and randomly deleting some of them.

2. The process used in these tests created roughly 80,000fragmented files into about 330,000 fragments.

3. Install Diskeeper making sure to disable AutomaticDefragmentation.

4. Enable VSS on the test volume.

5. Change security on “System Volume information” (perMicrosoft Support Article ID 309531) in order to view VSSstorage space used.

6. Using Diskeeper 2008, analyze the volume before defrag-mentation, and save the Job Report to text file.

If satisfactory results are not achieved initially with the VSS-Compatible mode (e.g., free space consolidation), it can be dis-abled temporarily and, after thorough defragmentation, re-enabled for Real-Time defragmentation maintenance.

II. Defragmentation ImprovementsOverviewA key enhancement to Diskeeper 2008 includes substantialimprovements made to Diskeeper’s ability to handle severecases of highly fragmented files and situations where the freespace available on a volume dips very low. This includes thesevere cases of 500,000 fragments on a volume with 8% freespace to the equally ridiculous extremes of 3 million fragmentson a volume with 5% space or, 3,000 fragments on a volumewith .00625% available free space.

Diskeeper 2008 also introduces improvements to the approachDiskeeper takes when defragmenting a volume. Rather thanusing a rote or one-size-fits-all approach, Diskeeper 2008inspects a volume and makes intelligent decisions as to whatunique defragmentation approach to take to restore perform-ance as efficiently and effectively as possible. The results ofthis technology are evident in in-progress evaluations of thedefragmentation effort.

To effectively test these improvements, multiple and variedtests are used.

Test Procedure and ResultsTest Case 1 (50 GB Volume):

Percent free space = 3.7% Fragmented Files/Directories = 10,475Total Excess Fragments = 263,746

7. Record “System Volume Information” folder contentsbefore defragmentation to note space used by VSS.

8. Image the volume using a disk imaging program.

9. Run Defragmentation program (Diskeeper 2008).

10. Analyze the volume after defragmentation, and save theJob Report to text file.

11. Record “System Volume Information” folder contents afterdefragmentation.

12. Restore drive image and repeat test with Windows DiskDefragmenter.

ResultsNote: The purpose of VSS-compatible defragmentation is to min-imize impact on the VSS storage area. This is represented in theresults as a lower percentage increase in size (lower is better).

On Windows Vista Ultimate (Test A)System Volume Information:Before Defragmentation = 307,200 KBAfter Diskeeper 2008 = 716,800 KB or an increase of 233%After Windows Disk Defragmenter (WDD) = 1,024,000 KBor an increase of 333%

On Windows Vista Ultimate (Test B – 49% free space)System Volume Information: Before Defragmentation = 512,000 KBAfter Diskeeper 2008 = 921,600 KB or an increase of 180%After Windows Disk Defragmenter (WDD) = 3,174,400 KB oran increase of 620% (and 64 remaining excess fragments)

On Windows 2003 ServerSystem Volume Information: Before Defragmentation = 307,200 KBAfter Diskeeper 2008 = 409,600 KB or an increase of 133%After Windows Disk Defragmenter (WDD) = 716,800 KB oran increase of 233%

Summary and Additional InformationDiskeeper 2008’s new VSS-Compatibility mode affords greatlyreduced impact to stored shadow copies. As noted, it does notcompletely eliminate activity. However, the fragmentation lev-els depicted in the test typically require a period of time toaccumulate and the increases to the System VolumeInformation, although minimized, would mostly occur only onthe first use. Regular (e.g., Real-Time) defragmentation in VSS-Compatible mode will effectively mitigate unnecessary growth, providing a tenable long-term defragmentation solution forVSS enabled systems.

It should also be noted that VSS-Compatible mode might resultin less-thorough defragmentation as it focuses on file defrag-mentation and minimizes free space consolidation efforts.Limited availability of free space can also hinder the thorough-ness of this option. Therefore it is recommended that sufficientfree space be kept available on VSS-enabled volumes.

F or the first time in its history—andthe first time in the history of anysoftware program—Diskeeper is

completely automatic with no intrusionon system resources. No scheduling isneeded and no human intervention isrequired. Just install Diskeeper anddefragmentation begins immediately andundetectably. Systems run faster andmore reliably—period.

Here is why you should deploy Diskeeper2008 on every system you manage:

Diskeeper runs undetectably to restoreperformance and reliability: Coined fromthe words “invisible” and “multi-tasking,”Diskeeper 2008’s InvisiTasking™ moni-tors resource consumption on a Windowssystem and injects Diskeeper processinginto the unused portions—and only intothe unused portions. Diskeeper willnever slow down systems during defrag-mentation—EVER.

InvisiTasking is so good that it is all but impossible to detect whetherDiskeeper is running. That means nomore scheduling chores for you becauseDiskeeper can run at any time with noperformance hit whatsoever. (You maybe skeptical at first that InvisiTaskinghas virtually no impact on system over-head. For this reason, you can scheduletimes when Diskeeper is prevented fromrunning. Eventually, we’re sure you’ll beconvinced and this type of lock-outscheduling will be forgotten.)

Immediate real-time defrag: defragmen-tation is virtually immediate and on the

fly with no drain on system resources—providing a constant level of maximumperformance and reliability. Diskeeperworks only when needed, only when sys-tem resources are available, to keepsystems fragmentation-free.

NEW Frag Shield™ 2.0—the first andonly technology to prevent system filefragmentation—gets even better. Nomore need to run a manual and resource-intensive process to get the performancebenefits. The Frag Shield MFT fragmenta-tion prevention technology is now fullyautomatic and rewritten to operate invis-ibly using InvisiTasking technology.

Terabyte Volume Engine™ 2.0 (TVE) pro-vides fast, safe and thorough real-timedefragmentation of large volumes (over60GB) containing millions of files. TVE pro-vides the only unobtrusive way everdesigned to allow thorough free spaceconsolidation on busy 24/7 servers pro-viding optimum performance with no over-head and dramatically reduced cost ofownership. (Available in EnterpriseServer.)

I’d absolutely recommend Diskeeper. It’s done a phenomenal job of maintain-ing system performance on our serverand workstations. Setting Diskeeper toautomatically defragment and optimizehard drive space has actually improvedresponsiveness on every computer, regardless of system size or age. UsingFragShield has helped identify, correct, and prevent page file and MFT problems. This also makes a marked difference inperformance.

Several other factors make Diskeeper agreat tool:

• Because it runs silently in the back-ground using only idle resources, users never see Diskeeper doing itsjob. They only see the benefits inimproved performance.

• Diskeeper’s automatic functionalityalso means that as an administrator,I “set it and forget it.” Diskeeper doesits work with no intervention from me,so I spend significantly less time oncomputer performance management.

• Our recent upgrade to Diskeeper2008 went quickly and smoothly. The web-based upgrade tool workedflawlessly.

• Because Diskeeper does such agreat job of disk optimization, ouroverall storage usage decreased. This negated the need for expensiveserver and storage upgrades.

We are a client server environment, run-ning Windows Server™ 2003 and WindowsXP Professional workstations. We run amulti-location WAN using broadband inter-net and VPN connectivity with wireless andsatellite backup. Applications we use

include the Microsoft Office suite of tools, plus specialized software such asMicrosoft Visio® and Adobe Acrobat. Inaddition, we run an industry-specific data-base application called Firehouse, whichis served via our WAN to all of our loca-tions (stations). We also use our serverand WAN to deliver full motion, interactivecomputer-based training.

Diskeeper is easy to use, efficient, andtrouble free. It functions without glitchesor trade-offs, making our IT systemsfaster and more stable. Diskeeper hasgiven us a tremendous return on invest-ment by reducing our overall IT mainte-nance and expansion costs. I won’tdeploy another computer withoutDiskeeper.

Years of IT experience have made mecynical about most applications, butDiskeeper keeps on delivering. It’seither one of the best applications I’veused, or the best magic trick I’ve seen.I’m leaning toward the former.

I’ve been using Diskeeper for about ayear and a half now. I have nothing butgood things to say about it. Diskeeperhas taken the worry out of my life whenit comes to keeping my HDD defragged.

I just upgraded to the latest version ofDiskeeper… figuring it gets better witheach release. And I have recommendedit to several of my colleagues who haveall purchased Diskeeper.

Prior to using Diskeeper I was always run-ning at an average fragmentation level of

25%. I have a lot of files (over 100GBsworth) and am constantly adding/delet-ing files and programs day-to-day. With abusy schedule it’s hard to remember ortake the time to defrag my machine;plus, when I did run defrag, I had to makesure I ran it at night before going to bedas it would kill my machine’s perform-ance when it was running.

With Diskeeper, I don’t have to worryabout any of that. It runs in realtime, isalways keeping my machine defraggedand doesn’t slow down my machine atall. Now I average a fragmentation levelof about 1% and don’t even think aboutfragmentation on my HDD now that Ihave Diskeeper installed. You install itonce and then forget about it and yourfragmentation problems.

What could be better than that?

Thanks for a great product.

I was using Diskeeper 2 generationssince v10, so this upgrade is great. Inoticed a great increase in defragspeed and better background integra-tion. Bottom line, since it works betterand I don’t have to do anything to it ona daily or weekly basis, I really like thenew Diskeeper product.

I keep working with clients who havehard drive problems and failures due inpart to totally overworked hard drives…and needless failures, in my opinion. Thetotal cost to businesses that allow thisto occur is substantial, taking intoaccount the downtime and loss of criticaldata, which often cannot be recoveredfully, as backups are notoriously "old" oras I refer to them "absurdly latent." There are a rare number of products stillout there that have grown "better withage" rather than merely grown bigger.

I was impressed with the degree ofautomation now in effect and with howsmall an impact Diskeeper has on nor-mal system performance in terms ofbeing able to run in the background andeffectively maintain disk health on a mul-titude of disk systems. I purposely testedthis on systems with multiple disk arrays,RAID, USB drives, SATA and IDE drives…and really, I could not believe thatDiskeeper was doing anything.

However, after auditing each disk, eachwas shown to be nearly perfectly defrag-mented, in perfect health; and at nopoint was I, as the user or administratorasked to intervene, restart or do any-thing.
