By Laura Levinsky“It’s a tiny solution to a huge

problem,” says Ken Craft. He can state that with

authority. Craft, CEO of Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission, has made it his life’s work to feed, clothe and house the homeless.

He is overseeing the installation of a row of cabins or “tiny homes” in North

Hollywood, the latest effort to get the homeless off the streets and into shelter.

Craft, the Los Angeles City Council and many organizations believe that cabin (tiny) houses could be the answer to homelessness in the San Fernando Valley.

Cabin homes are not meant to be permanent housing. At 64 square feet, they are too small for long-term housing. But they are a start. They have room for a bed, and shelves to store personal items. Most importantly, they have a door that locks. The worry about leaving items outside or having them stolen is solved. The ability to leave belongings someplace safe is overwhelmingly important to people experiencing homelessness. How do you go for services or a job if you don’t know that what little you have is safe and will be there when you return? Doors that lock. A simple thing that makes a

huge difference. Each unit also has electricity, heating and air conditioning.

The cabins are made of materials that will not rot or deteriorate over time. They can be sprayed or hosed down – important points if they are to be

reused in an era of COVID-19. They can be completely sanitized before the next person moves in to the housing.

As of now, there are two sites scheduled for cabin homes in the west valley. One is in the parking lot directly behind Councilman Blumenfield’s office at Vanowen and Yarmouth. Fifty cabins are planned for that location. Another 75 cabins will

I get it.You either love Dennis Zine’s

Rantz & Ravez or you hate it.For every person that

denounces his admonition to “buy a gun” there is someone who applauds his recognition of the growing crime problem and issues at city hall.

I get the letters. I hear you.And I respond. You need to

know I’ve asked every single reader who has complained to write an editorial. Explain their position.

I’ve offered the same editorial space to every single person who has a counter argument to Dennis’ acknowledged right-wing, hard core stance.

To a person, they’ve declined.We are not a one-sided paper.

Over the last 40 years we’ve had plenty of editorial contributors on both sides of the aisle, liberal and conservative, sympathetic to the homeless and ready to run them out of town, pro-gun and anti-violence.

Lately, however, it seems no one wants to put their money where their mouth is. No one wants to put pen to paper.

It’s easy to complain. It’s easy to attack. It’s harder to back up those arguments.

You’ve got to give it to Dennis. At least he has the courage of his convictions. He’s not afraid of the backlash when he gives his opinion. Which is why we love him. We may not always agree, and believe me we’ve had our differences of opinion, but given his background as a cop and a city councilman he can make some strong arguments.

He’s very rarely politically correct, and never subtle, but he gives us his opinion, and we clearly label it as such (read the publisher’s box below that states “Opinions expressed in articles are those belonging to the article’s author and do not necessarily reflect the view of the Publisher or its advertisers. Submissions are welcome and must include name, address and phone.”)

So give us yours. Speak up. Give me a point-counterpoint

to Dennis’ assertions. Of course we’ll print it.

And if you don’t - well okay. I’m lining up some folks from another point of view to counter-balance. I’ve got at least one who’s agreed to step up to the plate and take on Dennis in print.

Frankly, I’m just glad that the nay-sayers are reading. We have a lot of good information in all the other pages of the paper. Skip page 4 if you’re so inclined.

I believe in free speech. I may not agree with what you say (or he says) but I’ll defend your right

to say it. And encourage it.So keep reading. And if you

dare, start writing.

Letters to the Editor:

Amid the unprecedented difficulties of COVID-19, I broke my arm, forcing me to be on disability. Unfortunately, without surgery, I cannot return to work and I am at risk of losing my job. Making matters even worse, I have diabetes, which leaves me particularly susceptible to COVID-19.

With cases in Southern California surging faster than most other places and my own health concerns, I have been forced to delay my surgery until the pandemic eases up. But time has gotten short and I need to return to work—despite Los Angeles now being at the epicenter of the pandemic.

Thankfully, if I absolutely need to go in for surgery, I know that my local hospital, as well as all hospitals across Southern California, are committed to keeping patient safety and care a top priority, from reducing entry to their facilities, to enforced, screening to free Covid-19 testing. And now they are at the forefront of distributing the vaccine.

Especially during a pandemic, it takes a special kind of person to be a healthcare worker, and I am thankful that local hospitals are putting our care as their highest concern. As vaccines start to roll out, I hope every member of the Latino community who is reading this makes an appointment to take the vaccine, as soon as they can.

Will you stop giving Dennis Zine a platform where he tells people to buy guns. What is wrong with you? There are too many guns on the street now. Too many people who should not have them who do. Was the attempt on our capital not enough for you to realize there are violent people out there. Some of these people are regular type citizens - military, cops, business owners, etc. Do YOU really want more guns on the street and in the hands of even “regular” people who can be incited to act violently? I cannot stand that you allow this. It’s not the occasional letter to the editor that is needed to make your paper a fair publication - it’s a regular columnist - just like Zine. Perhaps you could alternate each edition to make both halves half happy.

- Ellen Hudes•••

By now your readers and I know your allegiance and political loyalty to Dennis Zine. It is clear that despite my previous suggestions you add a column alongside his you’ve shun this approach. I speak not about a rebuttal but a consistent opposing column! A newspaper that does not exhibit side by side opposing column views does not demonstrate the “free speech” of the other 81 million. There are endless community members whose opinions the other half would like to read

alongside Dennis’ get a gun politics. Our local “Next Door” is a perfect example of our divided community which craves side by side “free speech” two- column format pro and con. And I speak not about letters to the editor or rebuttals.

By Miri RossittoIn business, the topic

of effective processes and procedures might seem a little bit dry, but it doesn’t have to be. These days there are numerous seamless tools, apps and platforms that make working on your business easy and fun. Time is always your greatest resource and streamlining your processes and procedures will not only save you time, but it will also increase another resource you love, money.

Successful businesses have solid foundations. A company’s foundation is made up of its mission, vision, and values. These core elements dictate the who, what, where, how and why of the organization and thus the way that everything moves forward. How does everything and everyone move forward in a synchronized, consistent, and healthy way? Clear processes and procedures.

We don’t have all day to talk about the thousands of different ways that you can transform everything through organization. But we can cover some nuggets that might get you thinking about where you can tip toe into becoming more efficient and effective.

• Your company handbook. Or as we at Cowe call it, your business binder. This is not

Business Organization: Three Transformational Techniques the same binder that holds your LLC documents and your business license. This binder is the centralized hub for how your business runs. It contains everything, from your mission, vision, and values, to every role and their corresponding responsibilities, to logins and passwords to what to do in case of various emergencies. Now, not everyone has access to the

business binder. There are some elements that are public and there are some that are private, but the point is, there needs to be a business binder!

Also, you do not have to have a physical business binder. All of this can be stored online in a secure, password protected location. Just have one. And most interestingly, if you don’t have one, the moment you start to make one, your business will become stronger, better, and faster immediately.

• Your CRM. CRM is an acronym for “customer relationship manager” or “client relationship manager.” Whether you have 10 clients or 100,000 customers, CRM’s can be a

that cost a lot. I mean a LOT. But if you are paying the equivalent of a mortgage payment for your CRM, then your processes and procedures are focused elsewhere. That’s right folks, the fun never ends (insert wink here).

• Your people. People are at the heart of everything that you do and yes, you need to organize them. But you also need to be able to have open, honest, and timely conversations about what they need to be organized. Trust and autonomy are two priceless gifts to give your crew. How can you get there? First, you need to create spaces and times to have those conversations. Calendar regular meetings with your team, individually and collectively, to

magical place where names, addresses, phone numbers, birthdays, likes, dislikes, logos, sizes, invoices and a million other details can be saved. If you want to scale, you need a CRM. If you want to remove friction from your sales process, you need a CRM. If you want to use your time wisely, you need a CRM. There are free CRM’s that you can test and play with and then there are CRM’s

talk all things business operations. (Pro tip- these conversations uncover much more than just day to day challenges and wins so listen deeply and connect with your people during these meetings.) Secondly, give your people a career path. They will stay loyal and connected to your business and brand if they know that you are invested in them. Inquire about their dreams and

then try to build a path for them through the business. Lastly, Empower your people. Stand behind them, support them, give them constructive feedback, and inspire them. Best. Feeling. Ever. I promise.

By Theda Kleinhans ReichmanLet’s just say that the latest buzz about Netflix’s most watched

series to date would have Lady Whistledown racing to the presses. The Regency period drama “Bridgerton” has caught audiences by storm. “Bridgerton” is set in the Regency period of British history (1811-1820). Mad King George sits on the throne and in this romantic concoction, love has social rules and marriages are arranged. However this does not suit the lovely Daphne, eldest daughter of Lady Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) who has eight children who must eventually marry. To her mother’s dismay, feisty Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) is determined to wed for love, not money. Good luck with that.

Daphne is pursued by countless suitors she finds unsuitable. To keep from being betrothed to any one of them she makes a pact with the very handsome Simon, Duke of Hastings (Rege Jean Page). They pretend to be courting one another, until she finds the man of her dreams. However, as time goes by she finds herself falling in love with him. It is obvious that he too has feelings for her, but they will unfortunately go unexpressed. But why? This is a question that will eventually be answered for us all watching--and for the lovely Daphne as well.

The mysterious Lady Whistledown, the gossip extraordinaire, whose society papers shed light on the scandal of the society season, narrates each episode. Julie Andrews who lends her voice to the narrator, adds the perfect amount of humorous class to the over-the-top salacious escapades she details. But who really is Lady Whistledown? That’s the question that keeps everyone on their well-mannered toes.

“Bridgerton,” created by Chris Van Dusen, is based on the romance novels of Julia Quinn and it’s projected that like the novels, each season will focus on the romantic tales of a different Bridgerton sibling. Bridgerton is available to Netflix members. Enjoy!

By Allie PrioreCan you believe we are

coming up on one full year of pandemic living? There is no doubt that COVID fatigue has set in for many of us, as people begin to venture back out into the world, I wanted to take a moment to remind you of simple ways you can boost your immune system and keep yourselves as healthy as possible. Below are a few of my favorite products that are great to take on a daily basis:

1. Multivitamin - make sure you are taking a quality multivitamin - check the ingredients to make sure there are no random ingredients thrown in (such as artificial coloring, xanthan gum, lead and mercury to name a few). A lot of companies use fillers in their products and casings, so I always steer myself toward organic vitamins to avoid any sneaky, harmful toxins. Make sure it includes vitamin C and zinc, two properties crucial in building up immune support.

2. Probiotic & Prebiotic - these will help your gut health. You want to ensure you have a healthy gut to properly process and clean out your

Vitamin Vitality: Small Steps to Boost Your Immunity

internal system. Too often we overlook our gut health, and it is so important to make sure it is getting the proper bacteria that our bodies need, while ridding it of the toxic bacteria. A prebiotic will help the probiotic absorb better into your body, but you do

not need to take one every day. You can absolutely do so but if you have a queasy stomach when taking pills, try taking it once a week to start and then increase to three times if you can! If you have to choose one over the other go with a probiotic.

3. Mushroom Capsules - I love taking a mushroom supplement. Do not fret if you do not like the taste of mushrooms because these do not taste like them. Mushrooms are one of the best foods you can consume for

immune support. They aid in inflammation of the body and hypertension, can calm nerves and serve as a great anti-aging property! Adding this into your daily regimen will increase your immune system and help to strengthen it.

4. Elderberry - Taken in a syrup form, it is not the best tasting supplement, but it will do wonders for your immune system. It helps fight specifically against cold and flu symptoms (we love that!), protects your heart and can aid in in stress relief. Incorporate it a few times a week for that extra immunity boost. Try to avoid a syrup that is high in sugar if you can. If you have trouble finding low sugar syrup, I would advise to take the elderberry every other day.

While we know there is no absolute cure for COVID, adding the above supplements into your daily routine will ensure you are getting the proper vitamins and nutrients your body needs to help fight against infection and viruses. We can’t control much in this situation, but we can take better control of our health as best we can.

There are simple way you can boost your immune system and keep yourself healthy during COVID.

By Janey M. Rifkin2020 was a record year

for online purchases and for most consumers it was the only way! Shopping from home was convenient, but when the merchandise arrived, it was often not acceptable. Either too big or too small, poor quality, wrong color, or perhaps just not how it appeared in the catalog. Most often, whether the item was too expensive or too inexpensive, it did not make economic sense to process a return.

So, retailers have a new message for customers, “Keep it.” The relatively new approach was popularized by Amazon and adopted almost unanimously by retailers during the pandemic. It is often cheaper for them to refund the purchase price and let customers either keep the products or donate them to charity.

Chain stores such as Walmart, Target, etc. led the trend and it has continued beyond the holidays’ buying sprees, and into the new year. Costs of mail returns were a hassle for purchases and for the retail stores as well. E-commerce returns could total

Retailers Rethink Returns - Tell Customers to “Keep It”

as much as $70.5 billion for this past holiday season – a 75% jump over the previous year.

A Walmart spokesperson said the “keep it option” is meant for merchandise the store does not plan to resell and is determined by purchaser’s buying history, the value of the products, and the cost of processing the returns. The USPS handled a record three billion packages during this last holiday season, only to then handle returns and late arrival packages – good job, postal service.

Los Angeles County residents are experiencing what seems to be a never before seen rodent activity problem. With the city of LA ranking second in the most rodent-infested cities in the country, hundreds of thousands of homes are experiencing higher levels of rodent activity than ever before. Though it’s normal for rodents to move into homes in the winter, the COVID-19 lockdowns have led to an unprecedented surge in residential rodent infestations.

Without restaurants and food manufacturing facilities functioning normally, rodents no longer have the nutritional resources that kept them centered in commercial areas - forcing them to spread into neighborhoods to search for food, water, and shelter. With more people ordering delivery and takeout, rodents are finding it easier to rummage through residential neighborhoods, leading to the invasion of your home - whether it be in your attic, crawl space, garage, or any potential shelter in or around your property.

Rodents in the attic may contaminate your insulation and damage your electrical wiring. As they look for water, they’ll pick at both your water and gas lines, as they don’t differentiate between the two, and to keep warm they may take up space by your HVAC unit, damaging the electrical wiring and air ducts. Aside from creating more financial expenses necessary to repair your home, these home invaders can bring in rodent-borne diseases that are

hazardous to both the home’s residents and their pets.

So how can you prevent rodent infestation? We asked Titan Rodent Control’s President, Daniel Lamb, for some rodent prevention tips. “As a homeowner, there are a few things you can do to keep your home safe. Trimming and maintaining the branches of shrubbery in your home, and keeping them at least four feet above the ground, make it harder for rodents to find additional food sources and gain access to your roof. Closing off any possible entry points around the outside of your home will also go a

long way in keeping them out of your home.” However, for many homeowners, it may be too late to tackle the issue on their own. In this case, calling a professional is the best way to get rid of these home invaders quickly.

Many pest control companies have basic tools for dealing with small-scale rodent activity. However, one of the top rodent control companies in the Los Angeles area, Titan Rodent Control, has developed new, proven techniques to solve this age-old problem. Their highly trained and experienced technicians provide a free inspection of your home and the surrounding areas, often sharing tips for preventing future rodent infestations. With fast, reliable service at a fraction of the cost of other rodent-focused companies, Titan Rodent Control is a full service, one-stop rodent shop providing rodent proofing/exclusion, trapping, sanitation, and bait station services. LA may be the second most rodent-infested city in the US but luckily, Titan Rodent Control takes the number one spot for eliminating these creepy critters.

Contact Titan Rodent Control at (818) 714-8053 or visit www.rodentcontroltitan.com

Restaurants and food manufacturing facilities being closed forced them to spread into neighborhoods to search for food, water, and shelter.

installations have reported no increase in any sort of crime in that area once the cabins were occupied. None. Not in any of the sites. Not in the valley. Not in Riverside. Not in other states. All the imagined horrible things didn’t happen. The residents of the cabins didn’t congregate and cause trouble. Other homeless people didn’t establish encampments around the cabins. The areas were kept clean.

The tiny homes are also cost effective. Each cabin costs $3000 (vs apartments that cost over $400,000). Yes, the apartments are larger, but they also take more time to build. With cabins we can begin to address homelessness and give individualized services in the interim.

So how do the city and county pay for all this? There all pools of money from city and county set aside for homelessness. There is also fundraising. The service provider, in this case Hope of the Valley, is being paid to manage the site and ongoing programs, but the amount they are being paid is less than the cost of running the program. So they are raising funds to cover their costs.

Private donors can be given credit for sponsoring a cabin. The Winnetka Chamber of Commerce took on the challenge of funding the cost of one cabin through member donations and chamber funds. The West Valley-Warner Center Chamber of Commerce is looking at plans to do something similar. It’s a great way to support your community - provide housing that can be used to house the homeless. Reusable, sustainable housing that allows people time and services to get back on their feet.

For the west valley sites there is a projected move in date of April. 2021 That is how quickly these communities can be completed.

Another aspect of the cabin communities that has gone largely unnoticed is who is actually doing the building. There is a contract with Palette Shelter to build the homes. It is the people that Palette hires that make it interesting. Part of their building staff are people who were formerly homeless. So they are employing people who have been there and are giving back to help others.

Homeless cabins being built by formerly homeless people. An idea whose time has come.Laura Levinsky is a lifelong valley resident.

EXCLUSIVE

By Kevin PikeI’ve spoken with so many

people asking me whether it’s safe to sell their homes while we’re still dealing with COVID.

They really want to sell, but also want to remain safe and alive! Naturally we ALL want to remain safe and so I explain to them what we as Realtors do to make sure all parties remain safe and COVID-FREE.

Although nobody can ever guarantee total safety, based on what we do know about the virus, I believe the protocols we follow are among the tightest of any industry. Since March, I can happily say that none of my buyers, nor sellers have tested positive nor have come down with COVID.

Our protocols are actually pretty basic, and include the following to assure the safety of all parties:

1. Open houses are no longer allowed and all showings require advanced reservations with the buyers signing a COVID waiver to legally protect both parties.

I only allow two tothree people into any property when I show it, and request everyone else wait outside until we’re

through. The home owners are also requested not to be in the property during showings.

All agents and their buyers entering a property must wear face masks, gloves and foot coverings. I actually ask my buyers not to touch any surface, and for them to ask me to open and close doors as requested.

I always make sure no buyers nor their agents contact my sellers to arrange their showings. I respect the privacy of all of my clients, and require all showings to go through me personally.

By following these simple, but tried and true tested steps we all can successfully show homes and sell them quickly while remaining safe and secure from COVID.

There are many additional ways I list my clients’ properties to assure the greatest level of

Is It Safe to Sell My Home During COVID?safety as possible. I’m always happy to discuss these methods with those who call and tell me their own personal concerns.

Governor Newsom signed SB 91 into Law. SB 91 provides financial assistance to qualifying housing providers and tenants. For providers, it can be as high as 80% of the unpaid rent accrued since March. SB 91 also extends the eviction moratorium law until June 30, 2021.

The $25 billion Federal COVID relief legislation was passed by Congress in December. It provides for direct financial relief to rental property providers. SB 91 establishes the rules on how the funds will be distributed in California.
