A Season of

Kindness

In March, the Nurture and Evangelism Committee invites us to share kindness. They hope we will practice kindness, share kindnesses others have offered us, and talk about the benefits of being kind. Who knew that being kind was good for our blood pressure or mental health? Kindness is at the heart of Jesus’ teaching. Jesus calls us to reach out to everyone around us in love. And yet, we get busy, we become angry, we worry about what someone else is doing or not doing and we often neglect to be kind – to those we love and to those we do not know. Practicing kindness is a good way to approach Lent which begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6. Ash Wednesday reminds us just how human we all are. The ashes signify that are lives are temporary. We will all die one day. The ashes help us focus on living and living kindly in each present moment. Each week during Lent, we’ll have an opportunity in worship to share anonymously kindness we may have offered or had done to us. Sermons will focus on kindness. We will talk about how to practice kindness and how just trying to be kind can change us. We will think about how we might extend kindness to offer mercy to other people, and we will take time to ponder the wonder of God’s grace for us. Each of us can practice kindness. Some people find it comes easy. Others must work at it. Wherever we find ourselves, let’s take time this Lent not to give up something for Lent, but to take on kindness in our congregation, our community and in our world as our Lenten discipline. Class for Lent Join us in the parlor during Lent for the DVD series Entering the Passion of Jesus with Amy-Jill Levine. Author, professor and biblical scholar A-J Levine delves into history and literature surrounding the last days of Jesus’ life. In this six week series Dr. Levine sets the story of Holy Week in historical context and analyzes the risks and motives of the story’s characters. We will begin our Lenten study on Sunday, March 10 and conclude Palm Sunday, April 14. Bring your coffee

The Greater Salina Community Foundation's 8th Annual Match Madness is Thursday, March 21st at Salina Fieldhouse, 140 N. 5th. Be a champion for causes you care about! On this day, your dollar—and your impact—will stretch even further when you donate to participating organizations' endowed funds at GSCF. Every endowed donation will be matched up to 50% with cash for the charity's immediate use!. LENTEN ACTS OF KINDNESS

March 17th is National Kindness Day. We are encouraging all mem-

bers to concentrate on Kindness for the Lenten season. The sermons

during Lent will deal with kindness and we ask that you think of spe-

cial ways to extend kindness or notice someone extending kindness

and share that with the congregation. Each Sunday there will be slips

of paper in the bulletin where you can write down the kindness deed

that you either extended or observed. You need not sign your name.

Then four or five will be read each week to encourage others to per-

form acts of kindness. The more you do, the more it becomes a habit

to extend kindness to all you meet each day.


Sunrise Mariner’s News MARINERS POT LUCK

Mariners come join us for a St. Patrick Celebration, Sunday, March 10 at 12:30

pm for a Pot Luck. Bring a dish to share. Wear something green or you might

get pinched.

FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN

Twelve members of sunrise volunteered their time to pack-

age meals for children in the world. Each bag prepared

will feed six people, and includes rice, dried vegetables,

soy meal, and a vegetable/seasoning mix. The Sunrise

team created enough packages to serve 4,320 meals.

FOOD BANK NEEDS FOR MARCH March needs are: canned tomatoes, cold cereal,

spaghetti sauce, hot cereal (oatmeal), toilet paper, laun-

dry soap, dish soap, toothpaste, razors, paper towels and

kleenex.

CPR/FIRST AID TRAINING On March 31 at 12:00 pm there will be a CPR/First Aid Training. If you

would like to attend there will be a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board.

Cost is $40.00 a person. It will last about 2 hours.

Here’s a family-friendly opportunity to work alongside others who care about our community. The pro-jects include: clean-up of sculptures, clean-up on the YMCA trails and Smoky Hill River Channel, building 5 porches, landscaping and painting homes and medallion placement on storm drains in the North Town District, clean-up in alleys and planting flowers in Salina Downtown, clean-up on the outside of the Salina Innovation Center located at the Masonic Temple, and Move that House initiative and yard work for Ashby House. There will also be a drop off and recycling of car batteries overseen by Exide on the corner of Hamilton and Ninth St., and the City of Salina will have a free landfill day.

Tools are provided except for gloves. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

APRIL LINGERIE SHOWER FOR ASHBY HOUSE AND DVACK Often when the young women arrive at Ashby House or DVACK, they are badly in need of

underclothing. So, in April, Sunrise Presbyterian Church will collect lingerie for them.

Please donate lingerie. There is a lovely lingerie chest (made by Steve & Jeanne

Sebree) for the collection point. Often Walmart and Kohls have very nice things in their

SUNRISE MISSION COMMITTEE NEWS Hello Sunrise,

I am writing this after church February 17th. I heard Sun-rise Members talk about their mis-sion trip last October to Galveston. I heard Pat Breeding talk about Salina Grace Rescue. Two great examples of what Sunrise does. Mission in our neighborhood! No matter where the neighborhood is, we are groundskeepers! The mis-sion committee wants to invite eve-ryone. If you know of a need, let us know!

In 2019, we will continue support to The Ashby House, DVACK, Emer-gency Aid Food Bank, Salvation Army and Salina Rescue Mission. This year we will support CAPS monthly. The help of Pat and Patti Breeding and Jim Gile we will sup-port Salina Grace Rescue monthly!

End of the school year is approach-ing. It is scholarship time. A special offering will be taken March 10th to raise funds for our scholarship

fund. Last year we gave $200 scholarships to seven of our young people. Information will be out and applications will be due by April 30th.

March 20th will be another free Government Commodity Distribu-tion.

We are continuing to collect good clothes for The Ashby House Ca-reer Closet. These good clothes can be hung on the coat rack by multi-purpose room, but let Jean, Paul or Carol know so we can get them. The clothes rack may not always be visible. The spring linge-rie shower collection for DVACK and The Ashby House will be in April.

Sunrise accepted and surpassed Clark’s challenge of collecting 1,000 cans for the Souper Bowl of Hope. You donated over 3,000 cans. The city wide count for Souper Bowl of Hope will be later.

12 Sunrise Members helped build meals for Feed My Starv-ing Children January 21st. Our team built 4,320 meals.

The One Great Hour of Sharing Special Offering will be taken on Easter April 21st. 32% goes to Presbyterian Disaster Assis-tance, 36% goes to Presbyteri-an Hunger Program (reducing hunger) and 32% goes to Part-nering in Progress (Self Devel-opment of People).

HUNGER ACTION CONGREGATION

Your mission committee wants to tackle hunger a little more. We do already, but want to do more. PCUSA has a plan for congregations that want to be a Hunger Action Congregation. The purpose of the Hunger Action Congregation to 1) acknowledge and celebrate the faithful work of Presbyterians happening around the country to alle-viate hunger and end its causes and 2) to encourage these ministries to be even more holistic and justice-oriented. Step 1 is to form a Hunger Action Team. This is where you come in. If you are interested in this, let us know. We will be inviting members of the congregation to join us in this endeavor.

PRESBYTERIAN DISASTER ASSISTANCE In 2017, PDA responded to 22 countries outside the U.S.- plus at home a plethora of hurricanes, floods, tornados, wild-fires, storms, human-caused disasters and refugee crisis. PDA made grants totaling $4.2 million and 7,136 blue-shirt vol-unteers gave more than 200,000 hours of volunteer labor. Your church is doing God’s work!

Spring Break There will be no Sunday School March 10 due to

Spring Break week, March 11-15. There is also be

no Wednesday Activities on March 13. All activities

will resume Sunday, March 17.

ITEMS ON COAT RACK The items on the coat rack have been there a long time. Please

check to see if you have anything there. Building & Grounds will dis-

pose of the any items left on April 1.

HELP I AM LOST

I am a purple plastic lid that fits a nice sized plastic bowl. I was

left behind after a church potluck dinner. I have been lost several

months during the kitchen remodel and I would really like to make

my way home and back to my bowl, whom I am sure misses me.

If you have a nice sized serving bowl who is missing it’s lid, please

come to the Lost & Found cabinet in the kitchen and claim me

before I am tossed away forever.

SUNRISE PER CAPITA Per Capita is $31 per member for 2019. Per Capita pays the administration

expenses for our denomination. If every Sunriser paid their per capita, it

would really make a difference at Sunrise! Don’t hesitate to pay your

family’s per capita in installments. Mark you check, “per capita.” Thanks!

Sunrise will have Heartland Traveling Day Camp on June 10-14. Camp is

open to kids who have completed grades Kindergarten-6. Camp is free for

Sunrise kids. There is a $50 fee for non-members. In order to register go to

SUNRISE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 1 All youth who have been active participants at Sunrise are

eligible for a post-secondary education scholarship from the church. Students who have graduated from high school and who will be enrolled in career and tech ed programs, colleges or universities for the 2018-2019 school year are eligible. Pick up an application at the church; call Edie in the church office to have one emailed to you or find a link to the application on our facebook page. Applications must be re-ceived by the church office by April 1. They may also be emailed to Carol Viar at [email protected].

SPECIAL OFFERING FOR SUNRISE COLLEGE STUDENTS It is time to think about our Sunrise College Students. Sunday March 10, a special offering will be taken to help fund scholarships for our Sunrise Students. You can write the check to Sunrise Presbyterian and write scholarship fund on the memo line.
