The government via the Nigerian Export Promotion Council has announced plans to drive the nation's non-oil export sector through the deployment of e-commerce.The Trade Promotion Advisor, NEPC, Ganiyu Gbolagade, made this known during NEPC's Export Day at the 9th Ogun Chamber of Commerce, Industry Mines and Agriculture Trade Fair in Abeokuta, Ogun State.According to the council, the move is part of its efforts to complement the Federal Government's plan to diversify its economy away from oil.Gbolagade said that in line with the present administration's focus on achieving the zero oil plan, the council as part of its promotional activities, partnered a leading African online e-commerce enabler, Mall for Africa, to drive Micro Small and Medium Enterprises in export business in the most convenient and pocket-friendly manner. He said, “This platform will create the enabling environment for mutual relationship between the MSMEs and the MFA where they can contribute to the growth of the nation's economy. The MFA has a shopping app that offers access to over 200 United States and United Kingdom online stores from Africa.”Also speaking at the event, the Export Manager, MFA, Liz Oluwadare, said Nigeria had potential to access the global market, saying that the way forward was to get the right connection to help these small businesses get access to the global market.“We are coming in as an e-commerce agent that has set up a technological enabled online platform for sale of products across the world,” she said.According to her, trading in large volumes was still a challenge to the MSMEs due to inadequate funding
and lack of market access.Excerpt: Punch
The Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) says the Nigerian rice is gradually capturing African markets, just as Nigeria is fast becoming Africa's rice production hub.Alhaji Aminu Goronyo, the National President of RIFAN, said in Abuja on Thursday that the feat was as a result of the Federal Government's innovative policy on rice production. He noted that the quantity and quality of Nigerian rice had increased significantly in recent times, adding that various international groups had attested to the achievement.Goroyo said that many entrepreneurs and some African countries, which had recognised the efforts of RIFAN to champion rice development initiatives in Nigeria and Africa at large, were now willing to be part of the rice revolution. He added that some international agencies were also linking those countries that were interested in rice development initiatives with RIFAN.He stressed that the Nigerian rice revolution had

the action had restored sanity and brought great relief to residents and motorists. NAN reports that the Commanding officer, Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT, Commodore Okon Eyo, had in March issued a 48-hour ultimatum to truck drivers to vacate the roads and bridges leading to Apapa port.As part of measures to end the gridlock, the Nigerian Navy introduced a “Call up Card System'' for the trucks loading at Apapa ports. The call up card system allowed only trucks that had business inside the port, while those without call up cards were turned back at the foot of the bridge. In commending the efforts of the Navy, Taiwo said that the order had prevented mischief makers from taken advantage of the chaotic traffic situation. He said: “We hereby commend the intervention of the navy which made the impossible to be possible that such respite can come within a week. “Although, the intervention may not be a permanent one, yet, it is a big relief to the road infrastructure in the state. “The intervention is also a relief to everyone, but it is not over yet as there is still room for improvement. “I am also commending everyone that contributed to the compliance – the police, LASTMA and others – for bringing sanity to Apapa and its environs.''Excerpt: The Eagle Online
Nigeria's monthly export target of 480tonnes of yam to the United States, Canada, United Arab Emirates, as well as key European countries is under threat by the rising insecurity in Benue state, in Nigeria, BusinessDay investigations has revealed.Yam, a staple food virtually consumed by every household in Nigeria, is predominantly grown in the North Central region of Nigeria.Nigeria flagged off campaign on yam export on June 29th 2017 aimed at generating additional foreign exchange revenue of $10 within four years. The country is the world's largest producer of yams, with more than 25 million tonnes consumed entirely on the domestic market. Ghana, the second largest yam producer with 3.25 million tonnes, makes an average of $5 billion annually exporting yams.Sadly, the country's projection is now being threatened on the rising spate of insecurity forcing local farmers in Benue to seek refuge in Internally Displaced Peoples (IDP) camps, as Fulani herdsmen unleash mayhem on Nigeria's Yam base and food belt region of Benue state. The state has been under persistent attack through farmers-herders crisis ,as the situation has left the state with over a 100 000 Internally Displaced in the state many of whom are farmers.Confirming this development to BusinessDay exclusively, Simon Irtwange, who heads the Federal Government's Technical Committee on Yam export Programme said:”The farmers-herders clash has affected harvest and successful evacuation of yams into storage in Benue state. Irtwange also confirmed that the yams in the farms are being destroyed, burnt and also used to feed cattle. According to Irtwange, the Fulani herders call yams “indomie” for the cattle. The seed yams for the next planting season have also been destroyed along with the ware yams.Excerpt: Business Day

The regional coordinator, South West, Nigerian Export Promotion Council, (NEPC), Mr Babatunde Faleke has harped on the need for exporters to understand the basics of the exporting business, especially ensuring that their exports are targeted at specific markets.Speaking at a meeting of stakeholders in the export business, in Ibadan, Faleke listed other imperatives for exporters as the need to improve quality and packaging, standardize produce, have a grasp of documentation and embrace pre-shipment and post-shipment incentives. He, however, said the nation faced a challenge of the inadequate quantity of agricultural commodities and manufactured goods for exports, hence noted the need for farmers to scale up production and cultivate the nation's free land.He said the country must focus on exporting products it had a comparative advantage in like rice, shea nuts, shea butter, cocoa, yam, melon, cassava and cashew.“What we are struggling with is quantity. We need to scale up production, improve the quantity, scale up cultivation. Free land should be cultivated. We are not exporting enough yet we have several products we can export. For example, we should export rice, shea butter. Exporters must understand export basics such as targeting their products to a particular market,” Faleke said.Excerpt: Nigerian Tribune

On a final note, I will like to submit that, the current challenges of forex in Nigeria is indeed a great blessing in disguise for all affected importers. This is because, it is forcing smart ones to start export businesses in order to create their own forex, create more jobs, generate more income and stay competitive in the same import business.
For questions on this thought, you can reach me via email to [email protected]
In the same vein, all the traders importing items into Nigeria simply for sales should see the exportation of agricultural commodities as the rst option to be considered as they venture into export business in Nigeria to generate their forex. This is because they neither have any equipment needed for the manufacturing of any product nor do they have any machinery for mining of solid minerals.
On the other hand, any engineering company that imports into Nigeria (especially those into civil engineering) should first consider mining solid minerals and then exporting them. This is due to the fact that they already have a number of equipment that will be of great use to them in the mining, processing and exportation of solid minerals like lead ore, zinc ore, copper and manganese ore out of Nigeria.
