Greetings from your Editor:Welcome to a shiny new year
full of possibility and fresh starts—the chance to improve what we are doing or possibly to do things differently with more purpose and attention. But, before we move on to what we're going to do in the coming year, we want to salute one of our local schools.
Even before we had a chance to savor that last nibble of our
Thanksgiving turkey, Salyards Middle School students were jumping into high gear full of holiday spirit. The fact is, Salyards may be a small school by today's standards, but its student body has a huge heart. Check out how its clubs, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Sew-2-Serve, and departments, Choir and Orchestra, went out of their way to make sure local children and families were not forgotten
at Christmas. While enjoying the Fairfield Community Gazette, you'll also want
to check out Fairfield Women's Club's "Yard of the Month" winner as well as the November and December "Honorable Mentions." Our Spotlight on Seniors column recognizes the immense contributions Fairfield's Gwen Ware has made to citizens not only of the CyFair area but also to people now residing across the nation.
Lastly, we at the Gazette want to thank all of you for your participation and support over the years. Our 2017 commitment to our readers is to represent you and to be your "voice." We will strive to cover issues and events we believe are of interest to you. Likewise, if we fail to publish something you think we should, please let us know. We enjoy hearing your thoughts and ideas. Please contact me at [email protected] for questions, concerns, or to submit stories.
For now, Happy New Year. Let's go out there and make this the best year ever!

members believed with the school’s help they could make some very s ick k ids have a w o n d e r f u l Chr i s tmas f o r children at MD Ander-son.
So who is FCA? It is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The Club is a student-led organization found in middle school, high, school, and on col-lege campuses across the nation. Its purpose is to serve the school and the community in the name of Jesus Christ. Salyards has FCA 28 leaders but typically 300 students attend each meeting. The way it operates is the leaders meet weekly and facilitate a monthly meeting for all the students usually the last Thursday of the month.
Their 2016 holiday project was to collect toys for MD Anderson. The FCA asked the students, families, and the Fairfield community to join together to make this wonderful cause a success.
Angie Buck, World Cultures teacher, and FCA Sponsor says, “some of the kids staying at the hospital are not from Houston, others don’t have a lot of family members around while they are at the hospital. Plus, the families that are with their children have stretched their finances to the limits getting the best medical care possible.”
The toys the students collected were donated to MD Anderson to deliver them to patients as they saw fit and to restock their playroom.

Around Fairfield
In the 1840s miners traveled to Cal i fornia shout ing , "There's gold in them thar hills!" Ironically, in 2016, that is what others are say-ing about Fairfield. Our gold has nothing to do with precious met-als, and everything to do with priceless people---Individuals that are active, involved and give selflessly of their time to make a bet-ter world for those
around them. Gwendolyn Ware is one of Fairfield's Golden Girls. Some would
say, she is the best of what the heartland of the United States has to offer. Gwen was born and raised in Farina, IL. Farina is about 340 miles from Chicago and just under 100 miles from St. Louis. Then as now, Farina is considered "small-town" Americana the hallmark of handshakes and hard work. Gwen's grew up helping her folks who operated a restaurant that catered to teenagers. Like her gregarious hard-working parents, she quickly embraced the art of serving others. But her life-long love-affair with dancing began when she was about five the first time someone dropped a coin in the jukebox. Her dream to become a Rockette began the day the teenagers took her by the hand and taught her how to kick up her heels and jitterbug across the floor. Life was idyllic, in that small town dancing, riding bikes, having picnics, swimming, and a safe place for kids to play.
When she was about 11, her father sold the restaurant and moved the family to a farm. Her sister Lisa was born, and her Un-cle Glen, a disabled WWII veteran, became part of the family. Gwen and her little brother, two years younger than she, learned how to assist with the planting and cultivating of the crops. Then in her mid-teens, life took another turn. Her father made another career change, studied

theology and became a lay Methodist min-ister. Gwen became active in the church and community, going so far to act as a modern day Susan B. Anthony canvassing door to door to keep alcohol out of her neighborhood and safely away from young adults.
Gwen was introduced to her future husband by his landlady when he was working a summer job before his last year of college. One Sunday at the Farina Methodist Church, Jim's landlady, decided to introduce him to some of the local girls and Gwen was first on her list.
After Jim graduated and Gwen had completed one year of college at Eastern Illinois University, they were married. They moved to Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and then Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri so that Jim could honor his ROTC commitment, and then they head-ed to Fairfax, Oklahoma. After fifteen years of blissful marriage, in her thirties, and three kids later, she went back to college focusing on Home Economics and P.E. She graduated from college, in Tahlequah, OK and soon became interested in the new trend known as Aerobics which was sustained exercises, like jogging, rowing, swimming, or cycling, that stimulate and strengthen the heart and lungs, thereby improving the body's utilization of oxy-gen.
She discovered that through aerobics you exercise to the point of working your heart and decided that was just what she needed since there was a long history of heart disease in her family
She enrolled in a class and then started teaching and demonstrat-ing Jacki Sorenson’s Aerobic Dancing to anyone willing to watch and listen. She ended up in public and on TV showing the im-portance of exercise. Then she became associated with Rhythmic Aerobics with it’s founder Nancy Kabriel, who was teaching at Oral Roberts University, where both Jacki Sorenson, and Dr. Cooper from renowned Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas had made presentations.
When she was living in Midland, Texas, some friends asked her to join them in line dancing and perform with them. Gwen then began assisting when the instructor’s health failed. Eventually, she was invited to take over leading the group. The group often competed

IDEAS
in contests and the Senior Games in Kerrville, San An-tonio and Temple, Texas, where they won several medals. They enjoyed competing, entertaining at nursing homes, showing oth-ers how to dance, and having the time of their life.
After Jim had retired, Gwen and Jim moved back to Gwen’s hometown in Illinois to help care for their Mothers. Soon, Gwen had started another line dancing group, and they were performing at Christmas parties and nursing homes. By the time that they de-cided to move to Houston, she had danced and entertained at 315 locations. After both parents had passed away, they decided to relocate to Houston to be close to family.
Retirement hasn't slowed Gwen one bit. She is now a member of the Fairfield Women's Club, attends the Sassy Lassies once a month, teaches line dancing at Good Shepard Methodist Church and is still performing throughout the area, instructs water aero-bics in the neighborhood, is a member of a Baylor study designed to ease the effects of Alzheimer's, sings in the choir and is a good friend to all.
When I asked our Golden Girl what life has taught her and what are her dreams for the future, her reply was, "Family is important, I've given my best, and touched others, I've tried to be a good Christian, loved God and loved my country. And when I meet my Savior I hope he will say, 'Good Job! You have done well!' "

YARD of the MONTHLinda and Charlie Acosta have lived in their home in the
Inwood Park Section since 1992. Their yard is landscaped with extensive flowerbeds, not only in the front yard but down both sides of their home. The flower beds contained colorful annuals and shrubbery with a variety of heights and various shades of beautiful greenery. Their home is located off of the main entrance to Inwood Park. Take the first left on to Hillside Park Way, this street curves, becoming Lone Star Circle. The Acosta’s live at the very end of this street, on the left. Take a look at their beau-tiful yard.
While driving each section, looking for Yard of the Month possibilities, the committee makes a list of notable yards. Once the drive is completed, the committee chooses the winner of Yard of the Month from those yards noted. For the yards NOT chosen, we pick Honorable Mention Yards. Since we are striving to encourage well-groomed landscaping, we would like to acknowledge all names, addresses of those chosen.

by Jackie DevineSew 2 Serve Spreads Joy
During the Christmas season, we sometimes get so busy we forget that there are people that can’t get out and about as free and easy as the rest of us. That wasn’t the case with Salyards Middle School's recently formed Sew 2 Serve Sewing Club. Bursting with the holiday spirit, they identified a local assisted living facility in the Cy-Fair area, saw a need, and went about filling it with their talented, creative hands.
Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, about 25 club members met twice a week under the supervision of their teacher, Juliana Gibbs, to make and fill over 50 stockings with goodies including travel size toiletries donated by Salyards students, teachers, and families.
The word is, they don't intend to stop there. The next project on their agenda is making pillowcases for cancer patients.

School NewsSalyards Choir Adopt-a-Child for the Holidays
Every Holiday Season, the Salyards Choir Department chooses an outreach project to give back to the community. Sa l y a rd s s tuden t s a re blessed in so many ways so teachers, Mrs. Moore and Mr. Acree, like to use the Holiday Outreach Project to demonstrate the importance of giving to others who may be less fortunate than many Salyards students.
For the 2016 holiday season, they participated in
the Cy-Hope Holiday Assistance Program. Cy-Hope partners with various elementary schools in the Cy-Fair area to identify students whose families may not have the means to provide holiday gifts and new clothes for their children. These students are made available to be "adopted" by organizations or families in the Cy-Fair area so that each identified child would be provided with clothes and a special
gift during the Holiday Season. The Salyards Choir Family adopted 22 students from Owens
Elementary! Knowing their students and parents have big hearts they took on the needs of an entire school. The students identified siblings as well so they would have a wide range of ages with which to work. All gifts and clothes were new. The suggested price range for each child was between $50 and $100 for all items together.
Donors were able to sign-up for as many slots as they wished. Each child received a "special gift (toy)" and at least one outfit of clothes.

Music to the EarsAccording to Glynnes Lanthier, Orchestra Director at Salyards
Middle School, the orchestra was extremely busy learning holiday tunes, col-lecting toys to benefit Cy-Hope and performing for the community. Af-ter the toy drive had ended, the Orchestra delivered them to the Cy-Hope's Hope Chest Center where students played Christmas tunes and spread holiday cheer.
On January 17th at 7 p.m. in the Cy-Ranch auditorium, the 8th grade will take part in a side-by-side concert with the high school. The pur-pose of the event is for 8th graders to perform with the high school Chamber Orchestra as a sort of preparation/induction into the world of the high school orchestra. The concert is free and open to the public.
Toward the end of January, the orchestra's focus turns to the CFISD Solo and Ensemble contest at Aragon MS. In that competition, stu-dents will perform solos with a piano accompanist and small ensem-bles for a judging. Then, they receive the judge's comments, ratings and (if the ratings are high) medals and ribbons. Students were still submitting entries when the Gazette went to press, so the total count wasn't in, but based on previous years, they estimate about 65 stu-dents will participate.
Pictured is Salyard's last concert. Cellos from their Symphony group are playing a piece which featured the cello section called "Cello Squadron."

At the event, the Jordan Merecka Caring Heart Award is presented recognizing the individuals who have experienced a traumatic situation and turned it into something positive, providing inspiration to their fellow community members.
