Seeing the Invisible and Hearing the VoicelessFor some people, giving is a natural part of living. If government agencies cannot meet all the needs of those who are too ill or too isolated to take care of themselves, volunteers have to step up. But volunteering requires a big commitment of time and energy; it’s difficult to fit such good works into our busy schedules, and most of us can’t. But some people certainly do. What compels them to step forward and sign up to do challenging, mostly unremarked work for people whose situations have silenced them and made them largely invisible? We count ourselves fortunate to find to these amazing “friends indeed” living and giving so generously in our coastal communities, and we are pleased to introduce you to some of them.

Volunteers at Sherwood Oaks Skilled Nursing FacilityWho doesn’t have the fear of “ending up in a nursing home”? Promises are extracted to avoid this fate, and projecting the image of being forsaken by loved ones in particular and society as a whole. Yet many families must face the terrible truth that caring for the seriously ill or disabled can be impossibly hard at home, it’s simply not safe. Some have outlived their family, and now are too fragile to be alone.

But is it such a terrible fate? A failure of love and family loyalty to “end up” in a nursing home? Not at all. Especially in our own community’s Sherwood Oaks. The staff are hired for their competency, but can’t pass probation until they have shown compassion and tenderness in equal proportion. Still, it’s not enough. As activities director Jennifer Ryken so beautiful states, “Many of our residents have lived their entire lives on the coast, were active as students and parents, working and volunteering, but now are separated from their town. I want to bring the community to them. They would love to have visitors who live life as they once did. It would break the feeling of being isolated. Many here haven’t left the facility for years. The auxiliary program was created by those who visited a beloved who lived and then died at Sherwood Oaks. These members show appreciation for the care received by raising money to help buy needed equipment, and assist in social activities. Every Friday someone comes from a local church for gospel singing and Bible study. Others share music and laughter. We are so grateful to have such wonderful volunteers.”

About six years ago our local Mendocino Coast District Hospital hospice coordinator, Arlene Case, RN, began visiting hospice clients who couldn’t remain in their homes, requiring medical care of a nursing facility. She assigned hospice volunteers to follow them. Some of these volunteers still come to visit non-hospice residents each week. All the volunteers are willing to be important to people who may feel unimportant themselves. The small efforts and brief time work special magic because it carries the message that everyone who lives is important and deserves to be noticed as a unique being.

Of the seventy plus residents at Sherwood Oaks, some suffer dementia, but most are fully aware and get bored, despite the best efforts of staff. At a recent visit, the sound of laughter floated from the activity room. Live music is a favorite event, with people singing and calling out requests to outrageously talented musicians. Ice cream and, of course, bingo, are regularly scheduled. But wait, there’s more! Tai Chi and stretching, watercolor classes, Giants games, and pizza and a movie night, along with black jack. They think, they read, they sing, they dance, they gamble!

Since Jennifer started working as the activities director in January, her goal has been for residents to feel connected to their home place. “We need more people from the outside world, because new faces bring new feelings and activities. No special talents required, just the presents of your presence. Volunteers needn’t commit to a set weekly schedule, just share their time. To describe a movie or event they attended, to take someone for a walk on the grounds, read a story, or just listening to them is a huge gift. The people here would love to feel seen and valued by the community they lived in and loved for so many years.”

Jennifer wants everyone to know that the doors are open. People can just come and visit, play games, or help with daily activity. You are invited to call anytime at 964–6333.

Meditation in American Prisons Retired Mendocino High Math Teacher Ed Murrell Serves at Courses at Maximum Security Facilities in AlabamaAs a Vipassana meditator since the early 1980s, Ed Murrell learned of a program within the tradition that carries meditation courses into prisons. Vipassana meditation, as taught by S. N. Goenka, has been successfully taught in prisons around the world for the last twenty-five years; more recently it has found some acceptance in the United States. When Ed first started meditating, he noted that most adherents to the practice were White, mostly better educated, and mostly from a higher economic level. He wished the work could filter into other segments of the population, particularly to the poor and people of color. He felt that as a Black man, it would be good for him to serve at prison courses, and the Prison Trust agreed. Ed first signed up to serve at a ten-day meditation course at Donaldson Maximum Security Correctional Facility, near Birmingham, Alabama, in April, 2008, and discovered there work that he finds most satisfying in his life.

He says, “When you bring a small light into a very dark place, it seems to make a big difference. Donaldson Prison is a very dark place. When I saw the changes that happened in the students, they seemed much more pronounced than in the free world courses.”

The “light” that Vipassana brings is explained in a brochure for the Trust: “Vipassana is a non-sectarian technique of mental training and ethical conduct. This systematic process of selfobservation leads to increased awareness, self-control and inner balance. As a result, Vipassana meditation can actually change how inmates make decisions. Vipassana is presented in ten-day courses by experienced, volunteer teachers and course assistants, and is completely free of charge or compensation of any kind. The benefits of Vipassana are

“I’m able to deal with situations more calmly than before because now, I can see everything in a better perspective… Vipassana can make such a difference in the collective minds of the men here.”

Growing a Global Heart: Belvie Rooks and Dedan Gills Live from the Question, “What Would Healing Look Like?”Most African wisdom traditions hold the view that death comes in two forms. The first is the natural physical death that is a normal part of the life process. The second, and most dreaded, is the death and erasure that occurs when you are no longer remembered…

What Belvie Rooks and Dedan Gills call “Our African Journey” began in September, 2007, when they decided to leave friends and families to travel to Ghana to get married, a fitting tribute to their African American heritage as they began their lives as a couple. A few days after their ceremony in Accra, they headed to the Elmina Slave Dungeon on Ghana’s Cape Coast as a way of honoring and remembering the millions of unnamed and unknown ancestors who had passed through one of the more than one hundred slave dungeons along West Africa’s “Slave Coast.”

Belvie remembered, “As we stood staring out through ‘the-door-of-no-return,’ the last point of physical contact kidnapped Africans had with the African continent prior to being forced into waiting slave ships, we tried to imagine what reaching this spot must have felt like for some long-ago, unremembered African ancestor as she trembled on the precipice of a terrifying and uncertain fate.”

Uncontainable tears flowed as they recalled that for over three hundred years, without interruption, millions of innocent: men, women, children, husbands, wives, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, grandfathers, potters, weavers, farmers, midwives, and healers had begun the long passage into slavery from places like this.

“As we moved through devastating depths of grief and despair, Alice Walker’s poem ‘Torture’ ran through my mind:

When they torture your mother / Plant a tree

When they torture your father / Plant a tree

When they torture your brother / and your sister

When they assassinate your leaders / and lovers / Plant a tree

When they torture you / too bad / to talk / Plant a tree

When they begin to torture / The trees / And cut down the forest / they have made

Plant another”

They understandably felt tremendous sorrow and rage for so much loss. But when Dedan asked, “What would healing look like?” they recognized the question that would drive their dedication to find a way to honor and remember the forgotten ones.

Their plan seemed almost to form itself as they thought about the state of the world: the degrading environment, the desertification of Africa caused by global warming, and they realized that one powerful action they could take would be to inspire a movement to plant trees along the Trans-Atlantic Slave Route — a million trees. Every tree would serve to respect and honor the forgotten ones, while helping to heal the increasingly devastated environment. They didn’t know how to do this, of course, but simply making the declaration that this is what they would do had power in it that has opened doors to unimagined possibilities.

In March, as part of the annual commemoration of “Bloody Sunday” and Dr. King’s historic

immediate, observable and significant, but will require a serious commitment by both the inmate and the institution.” At first, the courses were viewed with suspicion by the deeply conservative Southern religious communities, both inmates and wardens, and were even terminated for a time. But the improved behavior of course graduates eventually convinced administration to allow it to go forward. Donaldson is now making plans to create a special wing exclusively for mediators.

Doing good, giving back were values instilled in Mr. Murrell from an early age by his famous aunts, Bessie and Sadie, the Delany sisters, who wrote the best-selling book, Having Our Say. Ed says he was instructed that, “’You have to give back to society, and if you do that, all that you give will come back to you many times over.’” And he says he has found that to be true.

The courses are silent, except for some communication with the students before the courses start and during the last two days. Despite this apparent lack of social interaction, Ed feels he has developed a deep relationship with the prison inmates who have taken the training over the four courses he has served. He says, “I do feel I know the men, some of them really well.”

Aside from the “measurable success in lowering recidivism rates and improving inmate behavior and coping skills” described on the Vipassana Prison Trust website, Mr. Murrell finds much else to recommend the work, demanding and difficult as it is, and sees much more than outward behavioral modification in students. Specifically, he notes deeply changed attitudes, transformed interior landscapes. And for himself, “It’s important that a person follow his heart, and this is something I know in my heart that I should be doing.”

There are several movies about the prison courses: The Dhamma Brothers, Doing Time, Doing Vipassana, and Changing from the Inside. You can learn more on the Vipassana Prison Trust website: www.prison.dhamma.org

Help for the Seriously Ill, Comfort for the DyingFriends of Hospice on the Northern Mendocino CoastEven with the support of family members and private insurance, being seriously ill or dying is still sad and hard. Being alone and poor makes it tragic. As state and federal budget cuts mean fewer government programs, the agencies and institutions that can ease the burden, or even fund basic medical needs, are being eroded. Many programs will not repair or replace home safety equipment, and new regulations make an individual decide between a walker and a wheelchair when both are necessary. Keep reading, because there is a lightness to bring to this story.

Our coastal community, so generous and caring, does not allow the sick and helpless to be cold, unsafe, and hungry. In 1986 the hospice coordinator at the Mendocino Coast District Hospital’s hospice program asked for volunteers to create a nonprofit organization to fund a safety net for hospice patients who couldn’t afford sufficient home care, medicine, heat, and food. So was born Friends of Hospice on the Northern Mendocino Coast. By the early 1990s Friends of Hospice expanded its outreach to include those who were cared for by Home Health when recent surgeries or serious illness and injuries made them unable to work, and their insurance didn’t pay for all the help they needed. When the Cancer Resource Centers of Mendocino came to the coast, their staff found there were needs they couldn’t always fund, such as special wigs and gas cards for people going “over the hill” for radiation five days a week. Friends of Hospice helped them.

In 2009 the board of Friends of Hospice decided to expand again and help anyone who was served by an agency that screened each case for genuine need, if she or he was suffering a serious or terminal diagnosis. No cash gifts are given, only direct help by the service agency. For more than twenty years, Friends of Hospice has quietly funded wheelchair ramps and shower chairs, a grant for the Senior Center’s Circle of Elders, support groups, personal care for those too ill or injured to care for themselves, pain medications, and weekend bathing. Volunteers screen each request, no matter how mundane or unique, and seek ways to encourage dignity and give small comforts. Each grant is discreetly introduced through the agencies that serve these deserving and grateful citizens. Special indeed were the birthday party for the eight-year-old granddaughter of a hospice patient, and an anniversary meal delivered from a favorite restaurant.

For seventeen years most of the funds have been generated by Rossi Building Materials’ annual golf tournament. Their staff and family have dedicated the funds raised to provide for the most vulnerable in our community. But times are getting tougher, and agencies are increasingly strained. In 2010, Friends of Hospice received less than eighteen thousand dollars and donated over thirty thousand dollars. This year Friends of Hospice hopes to reach even more needs, which means raising more money. Debt Ceiling, An Oxymoron?

It’s better to be a dog in peaceful times than a man in a chaotic period.—Chinese proverb

A Wall Street Journal article recently reported “The U.S. government is expected to hit the $14.294 trillion debt ceiling Monday [May 16], setting in motion an uncertain, 11 week scramble to avoid a default.” The debt ceiling is a cap set by Congress on the amount of debt the government can legally borrow. The problem is that the cap is in theory, not in prac-tice. According to the Congressional Budget Office the “debt ceiling” has been raised seventy-four times since 1962. That’s seventy-four times in less than fifty years. In the United States a debt ceiling is an oxymoron. Alan Greenspan recently asked on national TV, “Why do we have a debt ceiling anyway?” He went on to say, “We appro-priate funds, we have tax law, and one reasonably adept at arithmetic can calculate what the debt change is going to be. The Congress and the president have signed legislation predetermining what that number is. Why we need suspend-ers and belts is something I’ve never understood.” Ezra Klein in the Washington Post points out: Greenspan also makes the logical point that “you cannot have a position which stipulates that, ‘I will never allow the United States to default. But on the other hand, I will not allow the process to go forward unless there are additional actions with respect to the debt.’ ” In other words, if you’ve said you won’t shoot the hostage, you can’t simultaneously demand a ransom. Indeed. The Congressional Budget Office agrees: “By itself, setting a limit on the debt is an ineffective means of controlling deficits because the decisions that necessitate borrowing are made through other legislative actions. By the time an increase in the debt ceiling comes up for approval, it is too late to avoid paying the government’s pending bills without incurring serious negative consequences.” The fact is that the world is awash in debt, debt limit or not. Slow growth and in some cases, like Greece, negative growth make this debt an increasing burden relative to the economy. We in the United States are in the midst of a major debate on how to reduce our debt or at least our ongoing budget deficits. [Note, the government debt is the accumu-lation of all past budget deficits.] Europe is in an even worse position as economists Gary Evans and Peter Allen point out: “The EU is in destabilizing feedback loop that it cannot control. Sovereign credit is deteriorating and this is reducing confidence in national banking systems, causing or increasing the likeli-hood that sovereigns will have to assume bank liabilities. This further impairs the sovereign credit and increases the lack of confidence in the banks.” Reducing and eventually paying the government debt requires policies (higher taxes, spending reductions) that could slow down or reverse economic growth. It just isn’t as simple as setting a debt ceiling. A gradual fiscal adjustment is far safer for the economy than an abrupt contraction. That is why none of the major budget plans currently being considered stops the growth of government debt. All the plans propose to slow growth in the debt not to eliminate it. Anyone who looks carefully at the components of govern-ment spending knows that the government deficit cannot be eliminated through spending cuts alone without making large changes in the so-called entitlement programs including Social Security and Medicare. I, for one, think we need to make major changes in the programs although equity and common sense dictates that those changes should be phased in over time. However, I also feel strongly that higher taxes should be a part of any debt solution. According to USA Today, “Americans are paying the smallest share of their income for taxes since 1958.” We cannot engage in two (three?) wars around the world, fulfill the promises we’ve made to the poor and elderly, encourage

and support the private sector with essential public investment in education and infrastructure, etc. without paying our fair share. We can’t expect the rest of the world to finance our spending, however well intentioned, while we refuse to pay for it. The next few months are likely to be challenging for investors. The monetary easing pursued by the Federal Reserve is likely to come to an end sometime this year thereby removing one of the props in a weak economy. Meanwhile fiscal policy in light of the budget debates is almost certainly going to be con-tractionary. This is especially the case at the States. Governor Brown in California has vowed to balance the budget even if politics dictates that this be done with spending cuts alone. If he is serious, and I think he is, the government sector will shrink in size by billions and that will mean more unemployment and less private spending as well as government spending. Europe’s debt problems are ongoing and will likely restrain the future growth of our trading partners. The financial markets have been volatile lately in contrast to the steady growth in asset prices that we’ve experienced over the past two years. This is a good time to reflect on the fact that investing always entails risk and should be viewed with a long-time horizon and that individual investment decisions should be based on a clear sense of amount of risk one is willing to take. I would caution against market timing. Tax considerations, transaction costs, the difficulty of finding superior investment alternatives, and the dilemma of when to get back in make market timing difficult and potentially expensive. While the times ahead may be challenging, it is also likely there will be opportunities. A decline in asset prices sometimes leads to bargains. And investor vigilance and discipline, while always important, can be even more so in times of market volatility and stress. The politicians will sort out the budget. At least, this is what past experience indicates. None of us is likely to be entirely happy with the results. Debt is a burden and since it’s our burden we will need to face up to the facts and bear it. In an expanding economy, debt wisely used can be the grease that keeps the gears from grinding but in a contracting economy debt can be the sand that slows ones strides. I will leave you with this admonition based on an ancient Sufi story: “Believe in Allah but tie your camel first.”

march from Selma to Montgomery, Growing A Global Heart was invited to plant the first of the memorial trees along the Underground Railroad. The inaugural tree planting ceremony included participation from a cross-section of civil rights and environmental organizations, including the National Voting Rights Museum, the Federation of Southern Cooperatives, the Alabama Forestry Commission, the U.S. Forestry Service and the National Wildlife Federation.

Belvie and Dedan are excited about inviting their West African partners to join them in Alabama, later this year, in order to continue the tree planting initiative along the Underground Railroad, while leveraging the resources needed to launch the West African phase of the project.

Belvie Rooks has lived in Mendocino County off and on for decades. She is a writer, educator and producer whose work weaves the worlds of ecology, feminism, spirituality and social justice. Dedan’s social work in the inner city incorporates the principles of sustainability, permaculture design, environmental awareness and “the greening of the inner spirit” as critical aspects of the recovery and healing process.” You can learn more about their work on their website: GrowingaGlobalHeart.com.

Belvie and Dedan recently went to the 46th commemoration and re-enactment of Dr. Martin Luther King’s historic Selma-to-Montgomery March, first attempted on March 7, 1965. It was the images of bloodshed and brutality by law enforcement officers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge that shocked the nation and world alike, and what became known as “Bloody Sunday” eventually led President Lyndon Johnson to sign the Voting Rights Act. The culminating event at this year’s march re-enactment was that Growing A Global Heart was invited to plant its first memorial trees at the foot of the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge. Belvie and Dedan planted the Longleaf Pine, which is extremely efficient at carbon sequestration. At the beginning of the Civil War, there were 90 million acres of Longleaf Pine throughout the Southeastern United States, currently there are less than 3 million acres. REM

Sat. 06/25Mendocino Coast Garden TourEnjoy a behind-the-scenes, self-guided tour of some of the Mendocino Coast’s most beautiful “country gar-dens,” featuring landscaping artfully blended into the natural environment, on the Mendocino Art Center’s nineteenth annual Mendocino Coast Garden Tour. The day’s festivities will also include a garden shop and plant sale at the Mendocino Art Center and a gour-met vegetarian luncheon at Ravens’ Restaurant at the Stanford Inn by the Sea, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Mendocino Art Center. The Garden Tour is the Art Center’s largest annual fund-raiser.10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.Gardens on this year’s self-guided tour include:

• An ideal coastal garden with over two hundred erica-ceous, cultivars, rhododendrons, pieris, azaleas, heath-ers and conifers, as well as other perennials viewable on the many pathways.• A lushly landscaped garden sitting on eight acres at the end of a country lane. Three acres of tended gardens are surrounded by fields, forest, and tower-ing redwoods. The gardens feature a collection of ma-ture rhododendrons, a wide variety of conifers, shrubs and ornamental trees and grasses, mosses, extensive ground covers, and companion plantings in a series of garden rooms that completely surround the dwelling.• A garden, housing an ever-expanding colony of go-phers, voles, and a migrating mole, features blueber-ries, raspberries, live oaks, and apple, plum, pear and apricot trees.• A weaver’s garden who loves incorporating color into her weaving and into her landscape design. The property, which has a pathway leading to the Noyo River, has many fruit trees, ornamental trees, flowering shrubs, and a vegetable garden, as well as cactus and succulents surrounding the weaver’s art studio.• A garden with themed rooms, including Japanese, water, vegetable, and succulent.• The Noyo Hill Farm, located on the bluff overlooking Noyo Harbor. The owners, with their expertise and love for plants, have created a beautiful farm with organi-cally grown fresh produce.• The Weller House Inn (on the National Register of Historical Places, circa 1886) gardens were replanted in the late 1990s, with the idea of creating an English garden. The main lawn is ringed with soft-hued plants such as lavender, nepeta, artichoke and iris. Flashy ed-ibles flank the front porch, near a collection of fragrant heritage roses. Succulents, including the native cliff-hanger Dudleya, thrive atop the Water Tower, which is the high point in town.• The Surf Motel and Gardens received the 2008 “May-or’s Well Done Award” and the 2010 Fort Bragg Garden Club’s first place award. A highlight of these beautiful gardens is a gazebo, a peaceful spot where guests can relax and enjoy the colorful flowers and a spectacular view of the ocean. Benefit Lunch at Ravens’ Restaurant: Stanford Inn’s Ravens’ Restaurant, nationally acclaimed for vegetari-an cuisine, will host a special gourmet meal for Garden Tour guests, featuring Indian cuisine, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Mendocino Art Center. Ninety-nine percent of the ingredients are organic and most produce is from regional organic growers or the Inn’s California Certified Organic Farm. The meal is not the only sensory pleasure, with a breathtaking view from the dining room extending from the Big River Es-tuary to the Pacific Ocean.“Imagine… a Garden” Exhibit: To coincide with the Garden Tour, the Mendocino Art Center’s Main and Nichols galleries will feature “Imagine… a Garden,” a juried garden-themed exhibit with a wide spectrum of art, including ceramics, sculpture, paintings, photogra-phy and more, June 3–25.Garden Shop and Plant Sale: On June 25, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., browse the Mendocino Art Center’s Garden Shop, featuring a special sale on Mendocino Maples’ gorgeous Japanese maples, creative handcrafted gar-den art and many other surprises.Ticket Information: Garden Tour tickets ($40) and lunch tickets ($20) may be purchased by calling the Mendocino Art Center at 707 937-5818, ext. 10, or or-dering online at www.MendocinoArtCenter.org/Garden.html.

This is the sixth year that the Mendocino Film Festival (June 3 through 5) has come to Mendocino. The Festival presents independent films that give fresh in-sights on our world. Among the offerings are:

The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, the 1966 comedy that used Mendocino and Fort Bragg as stand-ins for a New England town dealing with stranded Russian submariners. Stars include Alan Arkin, Carl Reiner, Jona-than Winters, and Eva Marie Saint.

Feathered Cocaine, a documentary exposing the international smuggling of trained falcons. A mixture of geopolitics, terrorism, petrodollars, and nature con-servation.

Vanishing of the Bees, a documentary narrated by Ellen Page exploring the crisis of Colony Collapse Disorder, as honeybees mysteriously disappear from their hives.

Today’s Special, a culinary comedy starring The Daily Show’s Aasif Mandvi as a sous chef who is forced to take over a nearly bankrupt family restaurant in the suburbs.

Other Festival events are Friday Night Silents (silent films accompanied by live music), the popular Short Films offering briefer narratives, The Kids Program, presenting animated films to please younger audiences and the young at heart, and the 2011 Albert Maysles Award for Excellence in Filmmaking, this year going to director/cinematographer Les Blank who will screen clips of some of his films and answer audience questions.

Tickets are on sale for this event, and can be purchased through the website at MendocinoFilmFestival.com, or by calling 1-800-838-3006. Information about the Festival, including show times, is available at the website also, and free pro-grams can be found at many locations around Mendocino County.

Women Behind the Camera: Coffee and Conversation, will take place Saturday, June 4, 11:00 a.m., at Little River Inn’s Abalone Room. Three women directors, Dayna Goldfine, Nancy Kelly, and Jen McGowan, all of whom have films in this year’s Festival, will discuss the role of docu-mentary and narrative women directors in the industry, and entertain questions posed by the audience.

Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo explores the mystery of the development of Japan’s love affair with bugs. Like a great detective story, the film untangles the web of influences behind Japan’s captivation with in-sects and uncovers Japanese philosophies that will shift Westerner’s perspectives on nature, beauty, and life. Showing on Saturday, June 4, 11:00 a.m., at Matheson Performing Arts Center.

Something Ventured tells the story of the creation of an industry that went on to become the single greatest engine of innovation and economic growth in the twenti-eth century, creating world-class companies like Intel, Apple (found-ers Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs shown), Cisco, Atari, Genentech, Tandem and others as well as PCs and the Internet. This documentary wil be shown Saturday, June 4 at 2:00 p.m. in Matheson Performing Arts Center, with Producer Paul Hol-land and Director Dan Geller avail-able for a Q&A session.
