Kindergarten

First Grade

We are off to a great start in Kindergarten! Our Kindergartners have been learning all about Nursery Rhymes, including learning about rhyming words, main characters and the main events in stories. In math we have been learning about things that are exactly the same, things that are similar and categorizing items into groups. Please remember to check your child's communication folder every day for homework and important announcements from school. Please remember that if your child is a virtual learner, they must log in every day and remain logged in all day, whether it is to their homeroom Google Classroom or to Coach Mike's classroom during PE. They must log back into their homeroom after PE. Please also make sure that your child is in uniform every day, whether they are attending traditionally or virtually.

We are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning in K! Ms. Cahn and Ms. Ferrera

This is going to be a great school year! Despite, all the changes students are very excited to be back inside of the classroom. During the month of October, our first graders will be learning….. In Math,Sums and Differences to 10, parts within a whole, counting on, number sentences, number expressions, and NUMBER BONDS.5 + 2 = 7 2 + 3 = 5 5 + 2 2 + 32 + 5 = 7 3 + 2 = 5 2 + 5 3 + 2

The math examples above will help your child understand the concept behind adding and subtracting. In order for your child to be successful in math, he/she must complete their math homework. You may find extra math worksheets for additional support inside of their green folders. In Reading, we are learning to identify characters, Settings, Plots, and the Morals of Fables and Stories. Please help your child by practicing these Skills: Letter-Sound Correspondences, Segmenting and Blending CVC Words, such as /B/ /E/ /D/ and /M/ /U/ /D/, and last, but not least, sight words. SIGHT WORDS are a priority! Practice sight words every night.Blending three letter words together and memorizing all sight words help students to become great readers. Note:Remind your child to be on their best behavior.Good Behavior is always REWARDED.

Grade Level Updates

Third GradeSecond GradeOur third graders have been working very hard. They are doing a fantastic job learning to combine traditional school attendance with virtual attendance. We still have lots of bumps, but it is getting better each day. All are doing much better with keeping cameras on and mics off. We still need to work on turning our assignments in. This year, we have already covered literal & nonliteral language, identifying main events and sequencing them in Reading. In math, we are just starting multiplication by connecting it to repeated addition and grouping. Now would be a good time to start practicing multiplication facts. We are learning about the life cycles of plants and animals in science. In social studies, we are learning about what makes Louisiana unique and maps. For the virtual students, make sure you have a quiet place to do classwork, and you are keeping your supplies in a convenient, safe place. When and if you decide to switch to traditional learning from virtual learning, make sure you return with all those supplies. Thank you from your third grade teachers,Ms. Thomas and Mrs. Matherne

Greetings Parents and Superstar Second Graders!!! We are excited to work with you this school year! Whether in person or virtual, we will all work hard and do our best. This school year is as unique as all of our fabulous students. This month in Knowledge, we will be learning about Early Asian Civilization and Ancient Greek Civilization. We will also read Cat Bandit and Bedtime Tales in our Skills Lessons. We will study some tricky spelling words like do, down, what, where, why, from, she, once, one, could, would, should, there, said, says, and word. The tricky words don’t follow the rules. Students must memorize the spelling of these words. We will also study words that follow standard rules. We can sound out, segment, and blend these words. In Math, we will focus on place value, counting, and comparing numbers up to 1,000. We will practice adding and subtracting within 200 and using mental math and will even get some practice counting money! In Science class, we have been studying plants, and we planted some lima beans a few weeks ago as part of our study. They have now sprouted into beautiful plants. We will also study animal and plant dependence and the diversity of living things. We will close out the month learning about presidents and patriots in Social Studies. Parents, we have some excellent resources available to the students in Clever. Please use them to practice and enhance what we learn in class. Zearn is our math resource, and we are continuing to use Lexia for phonics practice. We also have a new program, Epic Books, which is a free virtual library. Our superstars can read on their own, or they can follow along to a book read aloud. I encourage you to have your superstar read something to you every day. We love our Superstar Second Graders! Thank you, parents, for all of the support you are giving. Together we will nurture and encourage our superstar students to grow into confident adults who will positively change our world!!! Mrs. Wilson & Ms. Wright

Grade Level and Other Updates

Eighth GradeSixth Grade (cont'd)ELA In October, ELA students are reading, writing, and thinking about how we grow from failure. Students will apply the discussions we have had in class into a compare and contrast essay about how the central idea in Steve Jobs’s commencement address and J.K. Rowling’s Harvard commencement address is introduced and elaborated. Students will then create a research-based first-person narrative about how a person they studied overcame failure. The narrative students will write will mimic Steve Jobs’s commencement address. These two writing projects represent two major assessments for sixth grade students this year! Social Studies This year in social studies, students are studying ancient civilizations.

Seventh Grade

Greeting Parents and Eighth Grade Scholars! In ELA, we are currently reading The Call of the Wild by Jack London and several literary and informational texts. While reading this text set, we are learning about citing textual evidence, vocabulary, using context clues, word parts, and constructing written responses. In Social Studies, we are learning about the Ancient Native Americans of Poverty Point. We are answering text-dependent questions, completing graphic organizers, watching informational videos, and constructing written responses. If you have any questions about this current unit, in either subject, feel free to send an email.I look forward to a successful school year! Mr. Brown

Welcome to Seventh Grade ELA/SS!! We are off to a great start to the 2020-2021 school year. This year in ELA, we will begin the year reading “Written in Bone,” an informational text by Sally Walker. This text will take us on a fascinating archaeological journey to 1650 Jamestown settlement, the first documented American settlement. In Social Studies, we briefly reviewed the 13 colonies. We are now following the timeline of the “A Crisis in the Colonies,” where we delve into the French and Indian War to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We are so proud of our seventh grade scholars. They are very eager and receptive to the new grade level and curriculum even though our year looks different from before. Thank you so much to our parents that have been incredibly supportive in making sure their 7th grade Pelican arrives at school/in class timely and ready for our daily adventures. Should you need anything, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Ms. Thomas

Social Worker's UpdateSuicide Prevention Month Dear Parents and Guardians: Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. We are all adjusting to the numerous changes and ‘new normal’ and, of course, look forward to a productive school year. Thank you for entrusting your child/children with us. September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Research notes that there is no single cause for suicide. Suicide most often occurs when stressors and health issues converge to create an experience of hopelessness and despair. We ask that you pay close attention to changes in your child’s behavior or new behaviors and feelings of being overwhelmed. Ask open-ended questions, listen, and avoid being judgmental. Reassure your child that you love him/her unconditionally. Supportive, loving relationships are key!
