Inside this issue

uly 1st marks the beginning of our fiscal year, so while our

listeners and viewers are enjoying all that summer in Hampton Roads offers, we at WHRO are reflecting on the year

that just ended, and getting to work on the goals we’ve set for the year that lies ahead.

As with any time of reflection, we’re looking at what worked in the last twelve months, and what we think we can improve on during the next. Much of that reflection has to do with how we steward the trust and the resources of the people who support us – and like every other year, I’ve been amazed to realize how much it takes to keep this enterprise running smoothly.

So July is a great time for me to acknowledge and give thanks to the hardest working and most dedicated staff any CEo could ask for.

The people who work behind the scenes at WHRO are capable, talented and passionate about our mission – just as much as those whose names you know and whose voices you recognize.

It’s also a great time to give a shout out to the many individual volunteers who help us on a regular basis. Whether they’re in the studio helping with administrative work, manning pledge phones during on air campaigns, leading tours or any of the countless other tasks they perform, we couldn’t be successful without these individuals.

We don’t often enough have a chance to publicly acknowledge the local organizations, groups and businesses that volunteer not only time, but goods and services to WHRO – and I can’t think of a better way to start this new (fiscal) year than by using this column space to thank them publicly. If you frequent any of them, I hope you’ll remember to thank them as well!

A publication for the WHRO community in Hampton Roads, VA

We appreciate the support of all of our members, and thank each and every one of you!

WHRO maintains an open meeting policy for our Board of Directors and Community Advisory Board. Members of the public are welcome to attend and ob-serve these meetings. uly 4th – arguably the quintessential American holiday. It’s rife with images – from flags and fireworks to cookouts and bottle rockets, it seems

everything is trimmed in red-white-and-blue. Throughout this issue of dimensions, you’ll find a variety of radio and television programs we’re airing to celebrate both the solemnity and the festivities of the holiday – culminating, as always, with A CAPITOl FoURTH!

This year, two-time Emmy Award-winning television personality Tom Bergeron (“dancing With the stars”) once again returns to host this annual event, starring music legend Barry Manilow, back by popular demand following his powerful debut performance on the show in 2009.

Broadcast live from the West lawn of the u.s. Capitol, the biggest and brightest birthday party in the country will also feature

performances by Candice glover, the season 12 winner of “American Idol”; country music artist Scotty McCreery (winner of “American Idol”); actor and singer darren Criss (“glee”); musical prodigy and classical crossover star Jackie Evancho; Broadway and television star Megan Hilty (“smash”); Broadway’s new hit Motown: The Musical; and five-time Academy Award-winner John Williams conducting music from the Oscar-winning blockbuster lincoln; with the national Symphony orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly. With 20 cameras positioned around the city, you’ll have a front row seat for the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation.

A CAPITOl fOuRTH also airs on national Public Radio and to our troops around the world on the American Forces network.

SECRETS OF THE DEAD ULTIMATE TUT Wednesday, July 10 • 9pm

ninety years ago in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, the greatest archaeological find in history was made: the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb and its golden treasures. It made Tutankhamen the most famous name in ancient Egyptian history. But the real story has become shrouded in myth — with many mysteries around the tomb unsolved to this day. This two-part special combines the latest evidence from a team of archaeologists, anatomists, geologists and Egyptologists to build the ultimate picture of Tutankhamen. Blending 3d graphics, stylized reconstruction and action-adventure forensic investigation, the programs take a 21st-century approach to ancient history, following new scientific research and presenting fresh insights into how Tutankhamen was buried, why his tomb was the only one to remain intact and the enduring enigma around how he died.

EATING ALABAMA Thursday, July 11 • 9pm

Returning to Alabama, a couple sets out to eat the way their grandparents did — seasonally and locally. But they soon realize that everything about the food system has changed since their families left the farm. What follows is an introspective and often funny meditation on community, the South and sustainability.

MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! eNdeaVOur, SerieS 1 sundays, July 7-28 • 9pm

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY Tuesday, July 2 • 8pm

This 1985 Ken Burns film explores the creation and history of the remarkable statue of liberty and what she represents to all Americans. narrated by david McCullough, the film traces the development of the monument — from its conception to its fascinating and often controversial construction to its final dedication — and offers interviews with a wide range of Americans, including former new York governor Mario Cuomo, the late congresswoman Barbara Jordan and the late writers James Baldwin and Jerzy Kosinski, to explore the meaning of the statue of liberty.

BAYOU: DC’S KILLER JOINT Friday, July 19 • 10pm

The Bayou: dC’s Killer Joint chronicles the 45-year history of a Washington, d.C., landmark and takes viewers on a journey from Dixieland to Dave Matthews, from strippers and bikers to hippies and punks. The kind of neighborhood club that’s all but vanished from the American scene, The Bayou featured jazz legends Coleman Hawkins, Woody Herman and Count Basie in the 1950s; rock ‘n roll and student riots in the ‘60s; the debuts of Kiss, the Runaways, dire straits, foreigner and u2 in the ‘70s and ‘80s; and the last-ever performance by international sensation Eva Cassidy in the ‘90s. Told by Bayou performers, employees and patrons, this film celebrates the club’s music, mischief and enduring legacy.

NAZI MEGA WEAPONS Wednesdays, July 17-31 • 10pm

In the quest for world domination, the nazis built some of the biggest and deadliest pieces of military hardware and malevolent technology in history. With brilliant, dark minds and a legion of slave labor at their disposal, the nazis believed the path to ultimate victory was to out-build and out-engineer their enemies. To them, bigger definitely meant better, and better meant more lethal. As Hitler’s grip on Europe tightened, he ordered men like Wernher von Braun, ferdinand Porsche and Alfred Krupp to build increasingly outlandish machines and structures to realize his master plan. Creating huge terror machines, hi-tech superguns and some of the original weapons of mass destruction to control a nation, conquer a continent and win the war. This is World War II told from a new perspective. The series uncovers the engineering secrets of six iconic mega-structures, tells the stories of the evil geniuses that designed them and reveals how these structures sparked a technological revolution that changed warfare forever.

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW ViNtaGe richmONd monday, July 29 • 8pm

AnTIQuEs ROAdsHOW revisits items appraised in Richmond, Virginia, back in 1998. A Cartier desk clock has increased in value from a 1998 appraisal of $10,000 to $15,000 to an updated estimate of $25,000 to $35,000. Meanwhile, a Royal doulton bear has dropped from an original appraisal of $5,000 to $7,000 to a current valuation of $3,000 to $5,000. Other items featured include 1956 World series baseballs, a Carnegie autograph album and a collection of diamond and ruby jewelry.

THE BUDDHA Tuesday, July 23 • 8pm

Two-and-a-half millennia ago, a new religion was born in northern India, generated from the ideas of a single man, the Buddha. The Buddha never claimed to be God or his emissary on earth. He said only that he was a human being who, in a world of unavoidable pain and suffering, had found a kind of serenity that others could find, too. This documentary by award-winning filmmaker david grubin tells the story of his life, a journey relevant in our own times of violent change and spiritual confusion.

hen it comes to smart programming for kids, nobody does it better than public television. We never

get tired of bragging about PBs KIds being the number one educational media brand, offering offers all children the opportunity to explore new ideas and new worlds through television, online, mobile and community-based programs. In fact, in an independent Harris poll last year, PBs KIds was once again named the most educational TV/media brand, the safest destination for children to watch television or visit online and the top provider of content that helps children build reading and math skills.

These shows do more than entertain youngster with bright colors and happy characters – they teach them math and science skills, vocabulary, spelling and civics in a way that makes sense to them. Whether they’re watching Curious george, Clifford the Big Red dog, Word girl, or any of the programs listed on the grid to the right, your kids are seeing programs of the highest quality, written and produced by educators and other experts.

That’s why we’re so excited about introducing two new friends who’ll be

joining our schedule in the fall: Peg + Cat, shown here. The show follows the adorable, spirited Peg and her sidekick, Cat, as they embark on adventures, solve problems and learn foundational math concepts and skills. Each episode features a story in which Peg and Cat encounter an unexpected challenge that requires them to use math and problem-solving skills in order to save the day. Their adventures take viewers from a farm to a distant planet, from a pirate island to a prehistoric valley, from Romeo and Juliet’s Verona to Cleopatra’s Egypt to new York’s Radio City Music Hall. While teaching specific math lessons, the series displays the value of resilience and perseverance in problem-solving.

PEG + CAT is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education through the Ready To learn Initiative, a program that supports the development of innovative educational television and digital media targeted at preschool and early elementary school children and their families, and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

finally, it’s a production of The fred Rogers Company – need we say more?!

n 1961, the school boards of norfolk and Hampton Public Schools began exploring the idea of teaching elementary and secondary students through the relatively new medium

of television and, by handshake agreement between Vincent J. Thomas and Hunter B. Andrews, the school board chairs of norfolk and Hampton respectively, established WHRO-TV.

Over the next few years, the utilization of WHRO’s instructional programming expanded to the cities of Chesapeake, newport news, Portsmouth, suffolk and Virginia Beach; as well as the counties of Isle of Wight, nansemond and York. These school divisions formally incorporated to own and govern, creating the group then known as the Hampton Roads Educational Television Association, or HRETA.

Reflecting WHRO’s continuing determination to incorporate technological advances into the educational experience, HRETA changed its corporate name to the Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association; and additional school systems applied for membership. for the last five years, HRETA has included 18 school divisions throughout eastern Virginia, all of whom work together to own and operate WHRO. This month, we’d like to extend our warmest welcome to our nineteenth owner member: Middlesex County Public Schools.

Middlesex has participated in services and activities offered by WHRO’s Consortium for Interactive Instruction for years, and we are excited to initiate them now as an official owner member. The leadership and guidance of our owners are what brought us to where we are today and what continues to keep WHRO on the forefront of education!

he Fourth of July commemorates the signing of America’s Declaration of Independence in 1776. The document calls for our independence

from great Britain, and claims that all men are created equal with unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

More than two hundred years later, America remains independent, but just as all men were not created equal in 1776, inequality among Americans still exists in 2013.

The Schott Foundation for Public Education has published a biennial report on black males in public education. The 2012 Report, entitled “The urgency of now” indicates that nationally, only 52% of black males graduate from high school in a four-year period. Among the nation’s largest school districts, norfolk ranks at the top of the lowest ranked districts for black males with a graduation rate of 32%.

The report continues, “The schott Foundation has consistently noted that these unconscionable outcomes for these young

boys and men are not reflective of their potential nor their abilities – but a direct result of denying them equitable supports and resources they need to be fully engaged and succeed. This is the opportunity gap that is the root of the achievement gap.”

According to schott, solutions should take a two-pronged approach: 1) reduce and reclaim the number of students who are no longer in schools receiving critical educational services; and 2) at each level, improve the learning and transition opportunities for students who are present but not fully engaged and unable to access the supports to fully excel.

For kids who begin life on an unequal playing field, it’s crucial that we provide a system of safety nets to catch them before they fall. It’s critical to the health of America’s communities, democracy, and economy.

so, this fourth of July, please take a moment to consider what you can do to help every American have a fair shot at life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and help ensure that

America continues to be strong and independent for another 200 years.

he gang of 8 has announced that in order to be a citizen of the united states, you have to listen to the Capitol steps 4th of July

special, “Politics Takes a Holiday!” It airs at 12noon on – July 4th – on WHRV 89.5fM.

Also, statistics show that many people who have not listened to past specials have been audited by the IRS. Coincidence? Probably!

So relax and celebrate your country by helping the Capitol Steps make fun of it. It’s not like there isn’t a lot of material to work with….

e’ve got the answer: AnTHEM tells the story behind francis scott Key’s “The star-spangled Banner,” the song famously penned after

the relentless bombardment by the British of fort McHenry during The War of 1812. Historians and music experts discuss the Colonial-era songs and events that influenced Key to write what would become the u.s. national anthem. AnTHEM also reveals

interesting facts about Key’s upbringing and religious leanings while

tracing the origins of the song. During the program, the u.s. naval Academy glee Club and St. John’s College Chorus give voice to this stirring and elegant song, including a performance of its first draft.

AnTHEM airs Thursday, July 4 at 9:30pm on WHRO TV15.

Breaking news from the Capitol Steps

ike all children, Connie Desaulniers enjoyed sketching and coloring. One day, when she was 10 years old, she sketched a profile of her sister while they were

watching television. Their parents enjoyed her work, and that compliment motivated Desaulniers to seriously pursue painting. she studied art throughout high school, and she was eager to major in art in college. Her father, on the other hand, had other intentions. He suggested to her—with good reason, of course—to receive a liberal arts education so she could find what people call a “real job.” desaulniers ended up attending the College of William & Mary, and although she continued studying art and graduated with a B. A. in fine Arts, her William & Mary education opened many doors in other areas, including a sales position at Busch Gardens during her senior year in college. she took the job and from there, began her busy career in marketing. Consequently, her productivity in art dwindled.

In the middle of her marketing career, desaulniers visited her grandmother, who was blind and living in a nursing home. Her grandmother asked her, “Are you still painting?” desaulniers answered, “no, I’m too busy with my job.” Her grandmother then looked into her direction, and putting

her fist in the air, she exclaimed, “You better do it, or God will take it away from you.”

Those words from her grandmother did the trick to make Desaulniers return to painting. Years later, collectors across the United States have purchased her works, and she now has her latest paintings on display at the café MAd about Chocolate, which she co-owns with her husband and chef Marcel Desaulniers in Williamsburg.

In this episode of Stories in the sky, desaulniers talks with Victor Russo about her experiences with returning to the art world, her techniques behind her craft, and her fondness for nature.

Each week, science Friday focuses on science topics that are in the news in order to bring an educated, balanced discussion to bear on the scientific issues at hand. OKLAHOMA! saTurday July 13 aT 1pm • Whro 90.3 Fm

It was as new and as American as that sinuous clarinet glissando at the beginning of “Rhapsody in Blue.” When it opened on March 1, 1943, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” breathed fresh life into musical theater. It had a compelling story, but more than that, the musical numbers – and what great songs they are – served the story line, as did the extended ballet sequence. Here was a musical that was fully integrated in all its parts, a turning point in the history of the American musical, which left the musty European operetta tradition behind. We invite you to join us and re-discover the magic that is “Oklahoma!,” saturday, July 13th at 1:00PM from the lyric Opera of Chicago.

HERE AND NOW sTarTs July 1 aT 2pm • Whrv 89.5 Fm

starting this month, we’re pleased to bring you the new Here and now, a fresh, new take on news magazine radio. Here and now is a collaboration between nPR and WBuR, who bring us On Point. Here and now airs at 2pm Monday through Thursday on WHRV, replacing Talk of the nation, which nPR cancelled last month.

Here & now’s daily lineup will include interviews with nPR’s bloggers, reporters and editors. The program will also showcase selected reporting from other nPR news programs. The expanded Here & now also will enhance nPR’s capacity to provide breaking news during weekdays.

THE GLORIOUS FOURTH July 4 • Whro 90.3 Fm

“The way to write American music is simple. All you have to do is be an American and then write any kind of music you wish.” strictly speaking, that comment by Virgil Thomson may be true, but say “American music” to the man or woman on the street, and a different definition will occur, one draped with red, white and blue bunting, one with songs in the vernacular, telling the story of the nation. Especially on the fourth of July, we’ll have to part ways with Mr. Thomson. for this most American of holidays, our American music will celebrate with traditional favorites – marches by sousa, songs by stephen foster, music that helps tell the story of this country; and we’ll even include a composition by Mr. Thomson. Tune in on the fourth and help us wave the flag.
