At least 70 people marched under thebanner of gay and lesbian group VietRainbow of Orange County at the annu-al Tet parade in Little Saigon, said HieuNguyen, the organization’s co-chair.

Participants showed their Vietnameseheritage by wearing traditional dress andriding bicycles, and their sexual orienta-tion and gender identity by carrying therainbow flag.

Spectators showed their support bywaving both the rainbow flag and thered-striped flag of South Vietnam.

Standing strong against HinesEditor:

In response to your story entitled “Council delaysHines development vote,” Jan. 30, the major “commu-nity benefit” this community needs is traffic relief. Withits 7,000 car trips a day, without counting additionalvehicles from 48 other pending developments, the Hines project will gridlock 28 intersections inSanta Monica. When the light rail kicks in, that will addto the havoc by creating jams at street-level trackcrossings.

Groups rarely on the same side of an issue standtogether in opposing this monstrous development:Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights, Santa MonicaCoalition for a Livable City, all the neighborhood coun-cils and the more than 500 individuals who signed aResidocracy petition. Even the Los AngelesDepartment of Transportation weighed in, saying theproposal will create unmanageable overload on thenearby freeways.

Yet we have seen this story over and over againwhen the council votes against public opinion and thecity’s best interest. Our council members ... cave to alldeveloper demands. The ethically-challenged PamO’Connor, who had Hines pay off her $4,300 campaigndebt for 2006 a year after the developer bought theproperty, will vote for this plan on Feb. 4. As will TerryO’Day and Gleam Davis, who never met a project theydislike. We can only hope that the four other Councilmembers don’t let Santa Monica commit suicide byauthorizing the mother of all traffic tie-ups every dayfor the foreseeable future.

Harriet P. EpsteinSanta Monica

Fans of O’Connor Editor:

Possibly Santa Monica’s most effective leader fortransportation, mobility, and community livability isMayor Pam O’Connor, who also has served as the Chairof the Board of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, theagency that builds and operates transit in Los AngelesCounty. She has dedicated the past 20 years to aidingthe efforts of the city in such important matters as his-toric preservation, our school district, early childhoodeducation, and enhancement of police and fire firstresponders’ protection of us all.

Because of Mayor O’Connor’s 20 year establishedposition for sustainability and public transportation, and her key role in getting the Expo Line to SantaMonica, she has many supporters (including us) whohonor her for those accomplishments.

Nevertheless, some of Santa Monica’s more vocifer-ous complainers about traffic made a scurrilous attackon this ethical elected official at the Jan. 28 CityCouncil meeting about the Bergamont Transit Villagedevelopment agreement. Their objection was that thedeveloper, Hines, had contributed to O’Connor’s elec-tion campaign fund.

All council members, former and current, need andhave taken donations from developers and specialinterest groups. So it is irrelevant.

What is relevant is the seasoned judgment of MayorO’Connor for the long-term benefit of all SantaMonicans. Few are as knowledgeable about the city’sneeds in housing, business, education, and jobs, as wellas traffic management and transit.

AFTER LENGTHY PUBLIC COMMENTARYlast week, City Council will deliberateTuesday evening on the fate of the BergamotTransit Village (BTV) development pro-posed for along Olympic Boulevard in theeastern Mid-City neighborhood.

Our Assemblyman (and former SantaMonica mayor) Richard Bloom sent a letterto City Council last week enthusiasticallysupporting the BTV proposal by Texasmega-developer Hines for the former PaperMate site.

After gushing about how wonderful theproject was, he slammed those who want togo slow on development and who’ve beenurging council to change the proposal or killit altogether. He also wrote that if the traf-fic-generating Hines project wasn’t built, theresult would “significantly negatively impactour ability to moderate traffic congestion.”Say, what?

Bloom’s stand may earn him beaucoupdeveloper campaign bucks but it’ll cost himhundreds, maybe thousands, of SantaMonica votes in his re-election effort.

Bloom’s letter proved two things: He’sway out of touch with his home communityand I — and many others — were right inendorsing his opponent Betsy Butler, lastyear.

Former Santa Monica mayor and coun-cilman (1981-1992), Santa Monica forRenters’ Rights co-founder and currentsteering committee member Denny Zanesent a letter to the local news media aboutthe BTV. Ditto for Michael Feinstein, also aformer mayor and councilman (1996 -2004). The letters, more like position state-ments, have fueled speculation about themrunning for council, this fall.

They wrote that the development shouldbe mostly residential. They mean apart-ments, of course. It appears that housing is“OK” — especially low-income housing —as long as it’s SMRR voter-based rental hous-ing. Forget condominiums. They’ll attractthe middle and upper classes.

They ignore the fact that the hundreds ofadditional apartments they desire (473 unitsare currently proposed) will still generatelots more traffic. As little as a two or threepercent increase in cars will be enough toadd to significant community-wide conges-tion during rush hours.

SHRIVER ENTERS RACE FOR SUPERVISORAnother former Santa Monica mayor and

city councilman (2004-12), Bobby Shriver, has tossed his hat into the ring in the race forthe Los Angeles County Third SupervisorialDistrict replacing the termed out ZevYaroslavsky.

Shriver’s leading opponent is Sheila Kuehl, the former California Assemblywoman whorepresented the 41st District (1994-2000) andformer State Senator for the 23rd District(2000-2008). Shriver’s entry into the supervi-sors race has apparently made the Kuehl cam-paign nervous.

Her strategist Parke Skelton, who hasmanaged and guided numerous SantaMonica campaigns over the years, startedslinging mud within hours of Shriver’sannouncement. He described Shriver as awealthy elitist who owns oil stocks. Really? Isthat the best that Kuehl’s consultants can

come up with? I also own a few shares of oilstock. So what?

In any case, I’ll be writing more aboutthis race during the months to come. In themeantime, I’m supporting Shriver. He hasmy wholehearted endorsement.

The Third District is the most diverse ofthe county’s five supervisorial districts. Itspans from Santa Monica and the coast east-ward, across the Santa Monica Mountainsinto the San Fernando Valley and includessections of Hollywood, Beverly Hills andWest L.A.

SPEND, SPEND, SPENDMayor Pam O’Connor and Mayor Pro

Tem Terry O’Day asked staff to analyze rais-ing the minimum wage from $14.08 to$15.37 an hour for the lowest paid cityemployees as well as employees of all con-tractors working for City Hall.

Although the wage increase will onlyimpact a small number of employees, anyadditional expense at all will only add toCity Hall’s expected budget deficits begin-ning in the 2015-16 fiscal year.

This is when the California PublicEmployee Pension System (CalPERS) plansto increase employee pension costs by asmuch as 50 percent over a five year period. With other costs such as employee healthcare also increasing, expenses are expected tooutpace revenues — thus leading to as muchas a $9 million deficit in the next fiscal yearand growing to $29 million by 2018. Expectincreased fees and new taxes to pay for it anda much needed new fire station.

It appears to me that O’Connor andO’Day are pandering to the municipalemployee unions and want their support inthe upcoming 2014 election when O’Connorwill surely run again and in 2016 whenO’Day’s term expires.

Speaking of spending, City Hall bureau-crats are now talking about City Hall payingto restore that ugly statue, “Chain Reaction,”in the Civic Center. Estimates on the cost torestore the dated mess range from $250,000to $400,000. Bad move and a huge waste oftaxpayer’s money.

City Hall should stick with their originalplan and let the preservationists who thinkit’s an “important piece of art” pay for it. Iffunding isn’t in place within a reasonableperiod of time, auction it off to the highestbidder and hope it finds a home at the NixonPresidential Library.

COUNCIL WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOUTHA few weeks ago, City Council approved a

“Community Civic Engagement Strategy” tooutreach to the younger members of thecommunity by accelerating City Hall’s socialmedia activities and hosting multi-genera-tional meetings and events.

Noting that most current civic partici-pants “have gray hair,” council wants toengage the younger members of the com-munity between 20 and 50 who it feels havenot had a voice in the civic process.

Great idea. Then council members canlisten to the younger members of the com-munity and ignore them just like they ignorethe rest of us.

LINCOLN, Neb. With yet another obstacleremoved for the Keystone XL pipeline, opponents were pressing forward with a law-suit to challenge the project, public protestsand an effort to inject the issue into theNovember elections.

Supporters and opponents both werequick to claim victories with the U.S. StateDepartment report released Friday, whichraised no major objections to the pipeline. The oil industry, some union groups andcongressional Republicans called on theObama administration to move forward withthe project, while a coalition of landownersand environmentalists say there is still causefor denying a federal permit. The projectwould ship 830,000 barrels of oil a day fromCanada to Texas Gulf Coast refineries.

Meanwhile, farmers and ranchers inNebraska who oppose the pipeline are plan-ning to run for seats on a state board thatregulates power stations that are neededalong the project route. And nationalactivists say they have recruited more than75,000 volunteers willing to participate incivil disobedience, should President BarackObama approve the Keystone project.

The project now goes to a 30-day com-ment period and a review by U.S. Secretaryof State John Kerry and other agencies.Obama has 90 days to make the decision onthe pipeline, but the White House on Fridaydisputed the notion that the report is head-ed to a fast approval. Oil began flowing lastweek through an Oklahoma-to-Texas sec-tion already approved by Obama.

“There’s no question, if the presidentapproves this permit, that there will be civildisobedience,” said Jane Kleeb, executivedirector of the group Bold Nebraska, whichhas helped organize opposition in the state.“We’ve said from the beginning that we willsupport the landowners and what they wantto do and what they think is best for theirproperty. I think you’ll see some landownersdriving really slow on their county roads toblock the (pipeline) trucks.”

Project backers said the report — the latestin a five-year review by state and federal agen-cies — bolsters their case for the pipeline andeliminates the need for further delays.

The Keystone XL is “not about energy ver-sus the environment. It’s about whereAmericans want to get their oil,” said RussGirling, CEO of pipeline developerTransCanada. “Keystone XL will displaceheavy oil from such places as the Middle Eastand Venezuela, and of the top five regions theU.S. imports oil from, only Canada has sub-stantial greenhouse gas regulations in place.”

Opponents were planning to host vigilsthroughout the nation Monday and“pipeline meet-ups” throughout February toencourage people to raise the issue with can-didates in the 2014 election. They also werewaiting for a Nebraska judge to rule on alawsuit challenging a state law that allowedthe project to proceed. A ruling is expectedby late March, and whatever the outcome anappeal to the Nebraska Supreme Court is anear certainty.

Kleeb said 115 landowners in Nebraskastill refuse to sign agreements with pipelinedeveloper TransCanada and would engage innonviolent civil disobedience if the compa-ny tries to lay pipe through their land. Shesaid her group also plans to run candidatesfor the Nebraska Public Power District, astate board that approves and regulatespower projects.

The district plans to construct a 115,000-volt transmission line to support a pumpingstation that would be used for the Keystone XL.District officials have said they can’t discrimi-nate against customers, but Kleeb said candi-dates will challenge the pipeline while promot-ing more alternative energies in Nebraska.

“We will make sure folks know that wehave not gone away, that we are still fightingthis pipeline,” Kleeb said.

Many opponents have turned their hopesto Nebraska, where a group of farmers andranchers have joined forces with nationalenvironmental groups to block the pipeline.

“They have some lawsuits in the works, and they’re pretty passionate people,” saidPaul Seamans, of Draper, S.D., who farmsand ranches on land where the pipelinewould cross. “I’m putting my hopes in themand the fact that President Obama is envi-ronmentally inclined.”

Julia Trigg Crawford, the owner of a farmnear Paris, Texas, who is in a legal battle withTransCanada over the pipeline, said she wasdisappointed in the State Department’sreport but happy to see some acknowledge-ment that tar sands will do further environ-mental damage.

While polls have shown that a majority ofNebraskans support the project, opponentsargue it threatens a region of fragile, sandysoil in the northern part of the state.

Opponents insist that the new pipelineroute — redrawn after state officials object-ed to the first path — still crosses theNebraska Sandhills, an ecologically fragileexpanse of grass-covered sand dunes in thenorthern part of the state. The pipeline wasrouted around an area designated as theSandhills by the Nebraska Department ofEnvironmental Quality, but activists say themap doesn’t reflect the true conditions inthe area.

Michael Kappel, courtesy Flickr TOUGH GOING: The harsh winter we are having shouldn’t be viewed as a refutation of globalwarming, but rather as further evidence of a growing problem.

Earth TalkDoes the fact that we’ve had such a cold

and snowy winter mean that global warmingmight not be such a big problem after all?

Lacey LLynchburg, Va

IT’S TEMPTING TO THINK THAT THEcold air and snow outside augur the end ofglobal warming, but don’t rejoice yet.According to the Union of ConcernedScientists (UCS), weather and climate aretwo very different beasts: “Weather is what’shappening outside the door right now; todaya snowstorm or a thunderstorm is approach-ing. Climate, on the other hand, is the pat-tern of weather measured over decades.”

Isolated weather events and even season-al trends are not an indication of globalwarming’s existence one way or another, andmost climatologists agree that the carbonpollution we have been spewing into theatmosphere for the past century is leading tomore frequent and intense storms of everykind and causing greater temperature swingsall around the planet. In short, the harshwinter we are having shouldn’t be viewed asa refutation of global warming, but rather asfurther evidence of a growing problem.

“There is a clear long-term global warm-ing trend, while each individual year doesnot always show a temperature increase rel-ative to the previous year, and some yearsshow greater changes than others,” reportsthe National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration (NOAA). The agency chalksup these year-to-year fluctuations to naturalprocesses such as El Niño or volcanic erup-tions, but points out that, regardless, the 20warmest years on record have occurred since1981, while the 10 warmest were in the past12 years. And global average temperatureshave risen by 1.4°F overall since the early20th century.

According to Becky Oskin ofLiveScience.com, shrinking polar ice caps asa result of global warming in recent decadesare one factor that may be contributing to

the cold weather in North America this win-ter. “One way the shrinking ice changesweather is by pushing winter air south,” shereports. “When the stored ocean heat gradu-ally escapes in autumn, it changes the pat-tern of an atmospheric wind called the polarvortex, streaming frigid Arctic air into NorthAmerica and Europe.” Meanwhile, a 2012study by researchers Jennifer Francis andStephen Vavrus concluded that intensewarming in the Arctic has caused changes tothe jet stream that regulates air circulationaround the planet, potentially leading tostronger winter storms hitting the easternseaboard of the U.S.

And what about all that snow? “Hotter airaround the globe causes more moisture to beheld in the air than in prior seasons,” reportsUCS. “When storms occur, this added mois-ture can fuel heavier precipitation in theform of more intense rain or snow.” The U.S.is already enduring more intense rain andsnowstorms, says the group: “The amount ofrain or snow falling in the heaviest one per-cent of storms has risen nearly 20 percent, averaged nationally-almost three times therate of increase in total precipitationbetween 1958 and 2007.” And some regionsof the country “have seen as much as a 67percent increase in the amount of rain orsnow falling in the heaviest storms.”

And Oskin points out that while we maybe bundling up and shoveling out in theU.S., it’s turned into another scorcher of asummer in the Southern Hemisphere: 2013was Australia’s hottest year on record, and2014 has started off even hotter, with tem-peratures soaring to 125°F and severe firewarnings issued in at least two states there.Apparently global warming is still on.

processing plant workers, truck drivers andthose who sell fertilizer, irrigation equip-ment and tractors.

No place may be harder hit thanMendota, a small farm town where unem-ployment rose above 40 percent at the heightof the economic recession in 2009, also a dryyear. Mayor Robert Silva said he fears thisyear could be even worse.

“We’re supposed to be the cantaloupecapital of the world,” Silva said. “But we’rethe food line capital of the world.”

Residents of Mendota late last year beganseeing tough times on the horizon when littlerain fell in the valley and snow didn’t blanketthe High Sierra. This marks the third consec-utive dry year for California, and Gov. JerryBrown has declared a drought emergency.

This past week, the snow pack’s watercontent was measured at 12 percent of nor-mal. State officials announced that theywould not be sending water to California’sagricultural customers. U.S. officials areexpected in late February to announce theywill allot only a fraction of the federally con-trolled water that farmers want, if any.

If that scenario plays out, Silva estimatesthe lines they saw outside a Mendota foodbank five years ago could run three times as

long this year. His town’s unemploymenttoday is at 34 percent — the highest inFresno County — and interim City ManagerDon Pauley figures it will top 50 percent.

Officials at Mendota’s City Hall aren’t theonly uneasy ones. Steve Malanca, generalmanager at Thomason Tractor in Firebaugh, said farmers have already told him that dig-ging deeper wells and buying irrigationwater are higher priorities in 2014 thaninvesting in new farm equipment from him. With reduced work in the fields, Malancasaid it’s clear he will have to lay off some ofhis 49 employees.

The ripple effect of drought extends tothe trucking companies that haul crops, tirecompanies that outfit the big rigs and fuelsuppliers who provide diesel, he said.Employees at John Deere world headquar-ters in Moline, Ill., will feel repercussionsfrom drought in California, the biggest agri-cultural producer, he said. So will the busi-nesses that make cardboard boxes to holdcantaloupes and the wooden pallets forstacking the boxes, Malanca said. The listgoes on.

“When you make a hay bale, you’ve got totie that bale with string,” he said. “The sup-plier who made that string, he’s going to beout of work, too.”

A 2012 study by the Agricultural IssuesCenter at the University of California, Davis, found that farming and food processing

industries created nearly 38 percent of allCentral Valley jobs. Every 100 farm and pro-cessing jobs create work for another 92 peo-ple, said the report, which measured agricul-ture’s impact on the state’s economy.

Fresno County led the nation in farmingin 2012, generating nearly $6.6 billion ineconomic activity, said Ryan Jacobsen, exec-utive director of the Fresno County FarmBureau. With no surface water for farmers,he anticipates that up to 25 percent of irri-gated field and orchards in the county willlay unplanted.

This time of year, farmers start to planttomatoes for use as paste and spaghettisauce. Next come onions, garlic and cotton, which are among some 400 variety of cropsgrown in Fresno County. Farmers may haveno choice but to rip out permanent crops, such as almond orchards and vineyards thattake years to mature, or let them dry up withno irrigation.

Jacobsen said the three months left in therainy season are not likely to rescue the yearfrom drought. “We’re right on the front edgeof it,” he said. “It’s going to worsen, worsen, worsen.”

In a good year, Chuck Herrin, owner ofSunrise Farm Labor, based in Huron, putsbetween 1,000 to 3,500 people to work. Hesaid he will be lucky to hire 600 at the sea-son’s peak, installing drip irrigation systems, planting and harvesting crops.

Workers he can’t put on the payroll willbe forced to stand in food lines to feed them-selves and their families, Herrin said. “ByAugust, September, October, this will be avery tragic looking place,” he said.

His worry is echoed at the Los BanosSalvation Army, where residents gather eachweekday for a spiritual devotion before wait-ing to hear their names called to collect a bagof donated food. Felicia Grant, a lieutenantat the Salvation Army, fears that the droughtwill be so severe that middle class familieswill need free food along with the farmworkers. She hopes that they’re not afraid toask for help when the time comes.

Rick Palermo of Community Food Bankin Fresno recently drove to Mendota,Firebaugh and other rural communities inthe Central Valley, scouting places to handout food. He’s been on the phone with stateofficials gearing up for the high unemploy-ment expected from drought-related joblosses. In 2009, the last bad year, his foodbank, located in a massive warehouse in anindustrial area of Fresno, provided familieswith 10 million pounds of food.

While praying for a miracle, he’s trying toestimate how much will be needed to feedmasses of unemployed farm workers thistime around.

“We’re all doing our rain dance, hoping itdoesn’t come to that,” he said.“Hopefully, thewater comes, but if it doesn’t, we’ll be ready.”

Investors entered the year with somedegree of skepticism and nervousness. Thestock market went basically straight up in2013. The S&P 500 index ended 2013 with again of nearly 30 percent, its best year since1997.

“No amount of negative news could derailthe market last year,” said Jonathan Corpina,a floor trader at the New York StockExchange with Meridian Equity Partners.

But no stock market can go straight upforever.

Many investors expected 2014 to be amore muddled and volatile year for the mar-ket. Market strategists late last year werelooking for the S&P 500 index to notch amodest gain of 4 percent to 6 percent, end-ing in the range of 1,850 to 1,900.

Investors were also looking for more pull-backs this year and possibly a correction, thetechnical term for when a stock marketindex like the S&P 500 falls 10 percent ormore. Three months ago, analysts atGoldman Sachs said there was roughly a 60percent chance that a correction would hap-pen this year.

“People did look at these stock marketvaluations at the beginning of the year witha degree of nervousness,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist with J.P. Morgan

Funds. “A correction would probably behealthy for the market.”

But many investors were surprised byJanuary’s turbulence. With one exception, the Dow had triple-digit moves every trad-ing day in January.

Still, with the broader S&P 500 indexdown just 3.6 percent from its January 15peak, the downturn is hardly severe.

“There’s been some negative news outthere — the economic data, corporate earn-ings and what’s now going on in emergingmarkets — but I’m not convinced the head-lines are bad enough to be a catalyst to pushus into a correction,” Corpina said.

Investors point to the December jobsreport, released on Jan. 10, as the event thatstarted the troubles. The U.S. governmentsaid employers created only 74,000 jobs inDecember, the worst month for job creationin since 2011 and far below expectations.

Up until then, weeks of data showed theU.S. economic recovery was accelerating.U.S. companies were selling record levels ofgoods overseas; layoffs had dwindled; andthe Federal Reserve was pulling back on itseconomic stimulus program, citing animproving economy.

Many investors called the December jobsreport as a statistical fluke. But the reporthas weighed on stocks all month, investorssay.

“It set a negative tone for the market,”Kelly said.

Other economic reports also painted apicture of U.S. economic growth possiblyflattening out instead of accelerating.

Investors combined these economic wor-ries with mixed signals from U.S. companies.

Wall Street is in the middle of earningsseason, when the country’s major corpora-tions report results for the final threemonths of the year. Half of the members ofthe S&P 500 have reported, and the resultshave been mixed. While fourth-quarter cor-porate earnings are up a respectable 7.9 per-cent from a year earlier, companies havebeen cutting their full-year outlooks andreporting weaker sales, according to dataprovider FactSet.

Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, said Friday that earnings may come in at thelow end or below its prior forecasts. It alsoexpects sales at stores open at least a year tobe flat. The company previously forecast thatsales would be modestly higher.

Wal-Mart’s forecast echo the commentsfrom Macy’s, Target, Best Buy and otherretailers.

Of the companies who have reported sofar, 44 companies have cut their full-yearprofit outlooks while 10 have increased theiroutlooks, according to data from FactSet.

Adding to concerns about the U.S. econ-omy and earnings were problems in overseasmarkets.

The bad news started with China. Arecent report showed manufacturing activi-

ty in the world’s second-largest economyunexpectedly contracted in January. Thereport added to other recent signs that theChinese economy was slowing down afteryears of massive growth.

Then came currency troubles in smalleremerging markets, particularly Turkey,South Africa and Argentina.

All three saw their currencies fall sharplyagainst the dollar, as investors began to pullout of emerging markets and return theirmoney to less-risky parts of the globe.

“These governments were financingthemselves with (foreign investor money),and now that these investors are looking togo home, there’s no source of money toreplace them,” said Krishna Memani, chiefinvestment officer at Oppenheimer Funds.

On Friday, the U.S. stock market closedout January on another down note. TheDow fell 149.76 points, or 0.9 percent, to15,698.85. The S&P 500 dropped 11.60points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,782.59 and theNasdaq lost 19.25 points, or 0.5 percent, to4,103.88.

Investors shouldn’t panic yet, moneymanagers say.

They will get the January jobs report nextweek. Also, another 93 members of the S&P500 are scheduled to report earnings.

“A 5 percent decline in equities is not anearthshattering event by any measure, par-ticularly after last year,” Memani said. “It’sstill way too early to give up on equities.”

care aides is expected to jump 49 percent inthe next 10 years, according to the report.

No. 1 on the list was industrial-organiza-tional psychologists but guess what wasnumber three? Home health aides, whoseprojected employment growth rate is 48 per-cent in the next decade.

HomeHero has two parts, said foundersKyle Hill and Mike Townsend.

One half of the idea is software thatallows users to manage caregivers. It trackstheir hours through smartphone-linkedtimesheets. Caregivers can record daily

activities and get paid through the app. Thishalf launched nationwide.

The other half is currently exclusive tothe Santa Monica area. It’s an online market-place that allows seniors and family mem-bers to vet these caregivers. HomeHero builta system that performs background checksand gives an entrance exam. They interviewcaregivers and shoot a high definition videothat’s posted online. They vetted all of thecandidates at the Santa Monica office, soright now most users are from the surround-ing region.

They’ve also set up a $1 million insurancepolicy that covers bodily injury or propertydamage.

For Hill, the invention of HomeHero was

the product of necessity: His parents live inOhio but his grandparents lived in Seattle. When his grandfather died they spent weekstrying to find reliable caregivers for hisgrandmother.

“It was a mess,” he said. “We tried to findpeople on Craigslist. They were under-qual-ified. They didn’t have experience. It took acouple plane rides for my dad to fly intoSeattle to interview caregivers in-person.”

Once his dad found someone, they strug-gled to manage the relationship.

“My dad didn’t know what time theyshowed up to the house or what time theyleft,” he said. “He was mailing them physicalchecks in the mail. They were debatingabout hours.”

As more Baby Boomers reach retirementage and caregivers become more highlysought after, Hill and Townsend are bettingthat they aren’t alone.

Previously, the founders had worked on aSan Francisco-based startup called Flowtab, which allows bar-goers to purchase drinksfrom their phone.

Science Inc. got behind HomeHero thissummer. Hill and Townsend moved to SantaMonica to build the program. It launchedlast week.

“We thought it all could be done better,”Townsend said. “And the need is only goingto keep growing.”

■ America's returning warriorscontinue to experience inexplicabledifficulty after putting their lives atrisk for their country. It took 13years for Army Sgt. Maj. RichardErickson to get his job back from hiscivilian employer after he tookleave in 2000 to serve in theNational Guard special forces. Theemployer soon fired him for taking"excessive military leave." Theemployer? The U.S. Postal Service, for which Erickson worked as a win-dow clerk (and which was forced toreinstate him after a January 2014ruling awarding him $2 million inback pay). Erickson had won severalinterim victories, but USPS foughteach one, extending the case, andsaid in January that it might evenappeal the latest ruling.■ Happy New Year: (1) Once again, celebrants in France marked Jan. 1by setting fire to 1,067 cars nation-wide (down from 1,193 the previousJan. 1). (2) In the Hillbrow neighbor-hood of Johannesburg, SouthAfrica, celebrants apparently decid-ed to abandon a 20-year-old tradi-tion and not hurl furniture fromhigh-rise apartments. (The Hillbrowcustom was highlighted on onesocial-networking website, alongwith the New Year's graveyard gath-ering of relatives in Chile andIreland's banging bread on walls todispel evil spirits.)

WEEKLY JOKEA fire started in the grasslands close to afarm. The county fire department rushedto the scene, but the fire was more thanthey could handle. Someone suggestedcalling the volunteer fire department.Despite some doubt that they would be ofany assistance, they were called.

The volunteers arrived in a dilapidatedold fire truck. They rumbled straighttowards the fire, drove right into themiddle of the flames and stopped! Thefirefighters jumped from the truck andfrantically started spraying water in alldirections. Soon they had snuffed out thecentre of the fire and leaving two partswhich were easily put out.
