Talk Of The Town

It’s All Change! CALL it the hip quotient or the cool factor... whatever it is, Cape May and West Cape May just got a lot more of it.

As the tourist season begins, some new businesses are starting their first summer here, while oth-ers have made changes in location or offerings. West Cape May in the vicinity of West Perry Street and Sunset Boulevard from Park Bou-levard to Broadway and south on Sunset has become a sort of a new food district.

Near the CVS corner, there are plenty of changes and addi-tions to the business line-up.

Many mourned the passing of Higher Grounds Café on West Perry Street following Hurricane Sandy and a fire. A new eatery Continued On Page 14 ?

called Emilia’s Garden opened last week in the same spot. Like Higher Grounds, it will offer coffee and an emphasis on breakfast and brunch.

New owner is Thomas Carpenito, while Penelope Cake will sell handmade gifts and hold arts and crafts workshops from a garden shed on the premises. John O’Hara, culinary manager of Emilia’s and a former executive chef at Juan Pablo’s in Wildwood, said he is also planning to serve light dinners. He promises at least two varieties of frittatas — sort of a cross between an omelet and a quiche.

Directly across the street is a building that once sold seashore chic decorations. The words “gen-eral store” appeared on the front of building when paint was removed.

It will not resume that use but become an Italian deli. Owner Dan Cappelletti will put his name on the new business, “Cappellet-ti’s Olde World Italian Deli.” (We do, though officially stand against the use of “olde” and “shoppe”, no matter the circumstances.)

Dan also owns Cappy’s in Cape May, next to the Wawa and Cappelletti’s on the boardwalk.Di Bruno meats and cheeses from Philadelphia will be featured and Dan is working towards a July 4 opening. The fixings of a great beach picnic could start here.

On Park Boulevard, Seaside Cheese moves to a larger location closer to the CVS intersection June 19, says owner Steve White. The cheese folks are taking over the

Berries, Berries, Berries...DO NOT forget about West Cape May’s Strawberry Festival, being held in Wilbraham Park on June 1 (or 2, if it rains) from 9am to 5pm. There will be strawberry smoothies, strawberry tacos, strawberry ice cream, chocolate-covered strawberries, straw-berry barbeque sauce on ribs and chicken... you get the idea. Also available will be strawberry T-shirts, hats, jewelry, art work and stained glass, as well as antiques, crab cakes, and bird-houses.

Thank you!A BIG shout-out to Congress Hall valet John Chirila. We were in the Brown Room recently, conducting an interview for our upcoming June color issue that ran a bit long. We hadn’t fed our meter engough quarters, so John staved off the cop bent on writing us a ticket, ran inside the hotel, grabbed our keys, and moved our vehicle to safety. And he wouldn’t even accept a tip! Now that’s customer service. .. next time, we’ll just valet from the start. Our apologies to John for having to take a ride in our hasn’t-been-vaccuumed-in-eons car.

Open... Maybe?WHAT is the deal with the open signs being displayed by local business who are not, in fact, open? There’s one particularly eggregious gas station offender, who shall remain nameless, who has faked us out several times!

David Matagiese is launching EcoVentures Adventure Camps, which is good news for kids (and parents) .

Cape May Linen location while that textile landmark moves down the street a block or so to 600 Park Boulevard, next to Cape Fitness.

Steve promises more dining space, fresh produce and more gourmet items available.

Meanwhile, Cape May Linen spends its last day in the current location on Memorial Day Mon-day May 27 and opens in the new location June 1.

Drive towards Cape May Point on Sunset and stop at the Cape May Honey Farm and its new neighbor People People. No that’s not a mistake, it’s People People, maybe like Barbra Strei-sand’s “People Who Need People.” If you see Hidden Valley horse aficionado Nancy Hall’s truck in the parking lot, you’re in the right spot. She is helping her friend, Jen Daily, the shop’s owner.

The boutique of fine dresses and beachwear was formerly located on Broadway in the tiny shop that once housed Bob Jack-

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Janeen Kelley of North Port, FL.

How long have you been coming to Cape May? Since I was five years old.

What do you like about it? I’m obsessed with Cape May! It’s sophisticated and charm-ing and has so much history and culture. I could talk about it for hours. When I die, I want my ashes scattered in Cape May.

What’s your favorite place? Elaine’s Dinner Theater! It’s quirky, fun and cool. It’s a microcosm of everything I like about Cape May.

Least favorite thing about Cape May? It really bummed me out when they got rid of the bookstore and put in Stewart’s.

What is your favorite res-taurant? The Mad Batter. The Blue Pig is pretty good too.

And your favorite store? Either West End Garage or Bath Time.

What do you like about Exit Zero? I like a lot about it. I love reading the weekly issues, I learn so much about the his-tory. It gives a nod to the past while embracing the future of Cape May.

What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? That the color issue is only published six times a year.

What’s your T-shirt size? Large.

Want to join our army of sub-scribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. It’s $50 for all 47 BW issues PLUS our six color issues.

son’s surf fishing empire. Cape May Bait and Tackle is now in that location.

Outside People People, an old sign on the building is peek-ing through the paint with the word Halbruner’s. Nancy said the building housed a Ford dealership many years ago.

Next door at Cape May Honey Farm, Doug and Andi Marandino are buzzing (we had to) with enthusiasm for a great summer of sweetening the lives of their customers. The store will be open seven days a week begin-ning in June. Additional varieties of honey have been added and even furniture polish and leather care products containing bee’s wax, said Andi. Warm weather has made local bees active not to mention all the available pollen this season.

Out on Stevens Street is a mighty dose of cool, Willow Creek Winery, ready for its first summer. The tasting room suggests Italy or maybe Sonoma Valley, California. All that’s missing is a mountain.

The winery is open seven days

a week for tastings and tours of the 50-acre farm. A Wine Toast and a Pig Roast will be held July 4 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm to celebrate the farm’s independence, said Kevin Celli, farm director. A blues band will be on hand along with red and white wines. It sounds downright patriotic.

Before you leave West Cape May, slow down and enjoy bar-becued meat that’s been smoked for 12 to 14 hours at Beachside Smokehouse, 416 S. Broadway, the former Daniel’s and Moonfish Grille location. Opening Memo-rial Day weekend, the new restau-rant features a menu combining sweet, tangy barbecue with fresh seafood and local produce.

If you’re walking the mall, barbecue is available at the Cape May Smokehouse, open at the for-mer Lemon Tree location. All their meats are slow smoked using Oak and Apple wood in custom built smokers. They have chicken, pork, ribs, turkey breast, sausage and even fried catfish. Get ’er done!

Talk Of The Town? From Page 14

Sounds like the south will rise again.

In the heart of Cape May, Ella Rae Summer Boutique has moved from Beach Avenue to Washing-ton Commons, next to the Acme parking lot. Co-owner Nicole Garcia said she has wanted the store to be located near the mall since day one.

“People are purposely shop-ping on the Washington Street Mall,” said Nicole. The new loca-tion is at least 25 percent larger than the previous spot. It’s the “boutique that makes you chic,” according to Nicole. Moving into the old Ella Rae spot is the, ahem, new Exit Zero Store! If you don’t have an Exit Zero hat, you may not know which exit to take to Cape May and you could wander aim-lessly through Rio Grande looking for a kite or a box of fudge. And wouldn’t that be sad?

A new store in-the-works is Galvanic at 514 Washington Street

Mall, showcasing men’s clothing in a dramatic atmosphere pur-posed to be cool and electrifying and unlike anything seen in this area. Owner Ryan Platzer said he hopes to open in mid-June. The shop formerly housed Gifts Galore for those keeping score at home.

New last year but redecorated this year is Pano, a sit-down din-ing establishment upstairs in the City Center Mall, offering a nice view of the mall. Folks are talk-ing about the great salads. Make sure you save room for dessert. It’s brought to you by the same family who own George’s Place and Y.B. on Beach Avenue.

Also along Beach Avenue, Congress Hall has a new Veranda Continued On Page 18 ?

Juice Bar featuring fresh juices made from fruits and vegetables from Beach Plum Farm. Guided farm tours are available Wednes-days, Fridays and Saturdays at 9:30am. The farm is located on Stevens Street in West Cape May. A Family Harvest Day takes place at Beach Plum Farm every Thurs-day from 7-10am.

It’s not the same old thing this summer. Eat somewhere where you haven’t eaten before and for heaven’s sake, get some new clothes.

New Camp In TownWHEN 31-year-old David Mata-giese was a child growing up in Cape May, his mother kicked him out of the house until lunch, and then kicked him out again until dinner, and rightfully so. “I loved it,” he told us. “I biked to the marsh or the woods and explored them with friends. Kids have lost that get-outside-and-build-a-fort mentality. It’s too difficult to get them unplugged and away from the iPhone or iPad or computer

long enough.” So, in an attempt to make

connecting with the environ-ment — and being active — more appealing than a session of Grand Theft Auto V (which is the most obscene, disturbing video game we’ve ever encountered, but we digress), David has founded EcoVentures Adventure Camps, launching this June.

The camp will be led by a staff of trained naturalists, including David himself, a marine biolo-gist who graduated from Lower Township High School, the Uni-versity of Hawaii at Manoa, and the Nova Southeastern Oceano-graphic Center/Guy Harvey Research Institute before running domestic and international nature programs for 40,000 kids a year through the International Game Fish Association in Florida, a position he held until moving back to Cape May last fall.

“I remember a girl named MaryAnn,” David said. “She’d

Talk Of The Town? From Page 16always had this notion in her head that horseshoe crabs are kill-ers. But the first time she got her hands on one, you could see it in her face; her opinion had switched in a matter of 30 seconds. The crabs had gone from man-eating to friendly, and you could see the wheels turning in her head.”

The Cape May program — geared for boys and girls between the ages of six and 13, though “no one will be checking ID” — will have the same goal: to un-detach kids. “I want them to think, ‘If I throw this water bottle on the ground, it’s going to affect me per-sonally,’” David said. “These are going to be the voters, consumers, and policy makers one day.”

To facilitate this, each day’s camp will have a theme, one which incorporates a physical component — think bodyboard-ing, snorkeling, skimboarding, and grab bag games like clam-pitching. “I have always enjoyed

sharing what I’ve learned through formal education by teaching it to others in an informal education center,” David said.

Case in point: the campers might learn about sharks while creating shark tooth necklaces. Or they might learn about nature on a walk to collect pieces for the mak-ing of reclaimed surfer bracelets. Or on Fridays, when the group will launch from the Miss Cape May for a fishing adventure, kids won’t just cast lines, they’ll discover the different adaptations of the ani-mals they’re bringing in. “Nothing will get stale,” David said. “Every day will be something new.”

Which means every day will

also bring a new opportunity for grown-ups to relax, sans the little ones. “Hey,” David said. “Parents need vacation time, too.”

The EcoVentures home base is the Grand Hotel in Cape May, with an additional location at 1901 New Jersey Avenue in North Wildwood. Participants can reg-ister for the day ($70 for one; $195 for three), the week ($295), or the season (see EcoVenturesUS.com for more pricing info). Lunch is included. Camp runs from 10am to 4pm Mondays through Thurs-days, and 7:30am-12:30pm for fishing trips on Fridays. EcoVen-tures will also provide classroom out-reach sessions off-season. See EcoVenturesUS.com for a list of frequently asked questions, and other good info!)

SPF: Your New BFFTHE bad news? The American Academy of Dermatology esti-mates that, by 2015, one in 50 Americans will develop mela-noma over the course of their lifetime. The good news? Such

scary stats are causing people to wise up about their sun protec-tion… true, even for the bronzed beach bunnies who flock to America’s Original Seaside Resort every year.

“The awareness level is higher than we’ve ever seen it,” says Danny DeCamillo, owner of Summer Sun Surf Shop on the Washington Street Mall. “I’m selling 20 to 25 times more sun-screen than I was six or seven years ago.”

Still, the misconceptions about sun protection abound… a fact that hasn’t been helped by the deceptive labeling sun-screen manufacturers have got-ten away with until recently. This year will mark the first summer season such companies will be accountable to the Food and Drug Administration for their labeling. Forget about ever seeing “waterproof” on another bottle again… turns out, there’s no such thing.

What else do you need to know about your screen? We called Stephen David Hess, MD, PhD, FAAD — a Vineland and Egg-Harbor-based board-cer-tified dermatologist, a fellow of the American Academy of Der-matology, and himself a veteran of Jersey shore vacationing — to find out.

1. You need more. “People are only using half the amount they should be,” Stephen said. “That’s half the amount that was used during testing to deter-mine SPF.” Meaning? Use half, and you’re only getting half the sun-protection factor... your 15 just became a 7.5. So what’s the right amount? The American Academy of Dermatology rec-ommends at least a shot-glass size amount to cover the exposed areas of the (fully-clothed) body.

2. People often peddle 15 as the magic SPF number — go below it, and you might as well be

lathering yourself with shampoo. “I don’t agree with that,” Stephen said. “Any sunscreen is better than none. But I wouldn’t recom-mend going below 15, or 30 for any beach activity.” As for going above? “It’s true that, if sunscreen is applied correctly, there might not be much benefit to going higher,” Stephen said. But, then again, people rarely use the stuff correctly. (See number 1). The good news? People seem to be heeding this advice. “We have SPF15 in stock, but most custom-ers have started opting for 30 or 45,” says Roz Johnson, General Manager of Tommy’s Folly for the last six years. In season, she has to order nine to 12 bottles of each

Talk Of The Town? From Page 16

every two weeks.3. Reapply every two hours,

more if you’re sweating or in the water. Period. An SPF100 will wash off just as quickly as an SPF8.

4. Be careful with your beer. “Spilling lime juice on your skin can lead to a severe sunburn,” Stephen said. “We see this a lot with people are drinking Corona in the summer.” (And for those of you who use the old lemon-juice-to-lighten-the-hair trick… lemon juice isn’t as bad, but you still want to wash it off your skin, asap!)

4. Mind the marine life. “It’s true that in the last few years, concern has been raised about the danger chemicals in sun-screen pose to the environment after they wash off in the water,” Stephen said. It is troubling, especially when you consider that 20,000 tons of the stuff can be found in our waters every year, according to a 2008 study published in Environmental Health Perspectives. Look for “biodegrad-

able” the next time you shop.5. While UVB rays cause

sunburn, it’s UVA rays that might be the greatest cancer-causing culprit. “They can come through your car window,” Stephen said. “And because you’re not burn-ing, you may not even realize it.” The solution? Sunscreens that tout a UPF — or ultraviolet pro-tection factor — are truly broad-spectrum. Wear it even on cloudy days... dangerous rays are still reaching your skin.

6. Enjoy your summer. “I’m not going to tell you not to go to the beach,” Stephen said. “I still go; I just make sure to bring my sunscreen, as well as my sun-glasses and my hat, because I know that sunscreen isn’t per-fect. A small amount of sun is good for the soul, it’s true. People just need to be reasonable about it. My philosophy is everything in moderation.”

Everything… except sun-screen, that is. Layer that stuff on good, Cape May.

THE award-winning Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company has exciting shows lined up for its thirty-third season. It includes the

usual world premiere (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow), a New Jersey premiere (Lost on the Natchez Trace), a comedy by a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright (The Late Christopher Bean), an American detective joins Holmes in our popular radio-style productions (Holmes and Carter Mysteries) and their storytelling holiday show (Christmas with Harte and O. Henry).

From June 12 to July 20 at 8:30pm, the spotlight is on the New Jersey premiere of Lost on the Natchez Trace. Slave auctioneer Malcolm Jeters is headed home when he falls from his mule during a violent storm. Injured and starving, he yells for help. The only one who appears is a runaway slave. The question in this compelling new play is who will save whom?

Written by Jan Buttram, co-founder and artistic director of Abingdon Theatre Company in NYC, the play was first produced

at Abingdon in 2012. After seeing it, ELTC’s artistic director, Gayle Stahlhuth, asked Jan if she would like to make further changes to the script, including adding a third person to the cast, and have another theatrical run, directed by Stahlhuth. Buttram jumped at the

opportunity.Tom Byrn, who was in last season’s It

Pays to Advertise and other ELTC productions, is playing the slave trader. New to ELTC is Leon Morgan, portraying the runaway slave.

The remarkable play, Lost on the Natchez Trace, is coming to East Lynne on June 12

Page 24: Volume 11, Issue 16 - May 23, 2013

Page 24 Thursday, May 23, 2013

Recently, he was in Gym Shorts at 777 Theatre in NYC. Stephanie Garrett, one of ELTC’s storytellers for Tales of the Victorians, who was in ELTC’s Christmas in Black and White, portrays a woman who inhabits the Natchez Trace.

On Tuesday, July 2 at 8:00pm, it’s ELTC’s popular admission-free student production, An Evening of Fables. After nine rehearsals, students ages 10-15 take to the stage in an entertaining event for all ages. Students interested in being part of the workshop, contact ELTC for applications.

Next up is the world premiere, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow from July 24 to August 31 at 8:30pm. The townsfolk believe that the headless body of a Hessian soldier astride his horse haunts their isolated village. When Ichabod Crane suddenly disappears, is it the fault of the Headless Horseman, or something else? Washington Irving’s supernatural story is adapted by James Rana who so vividly created ELTC’s last season’s The Poe Mysteries. Also like “Poe,” this production, with its cast of six, under the direction of Gayle Stahlhuth, travels up to Ocean Professional Theatre Company in Barnegat, NJ in late October.

East Lynne Theater? From Page 23

In the role of Ichabod Crane is Matt Luceno, who was in ELTC’s It Pays to Advertise. Recently he was in Chemistry of Love at La Mama in NYC.

Then it’s the delightful comedy The Late Christopher Bean, running from September 18 to October 13, a 1932 Broadway sensation by Pulitzer Prize-winner Sidney Howard. After his death, Christopher Bean is heralded as a great artist, and the art world now wants his work. But did a New England family destroy his paintings, misplace them, or hide them?

“It’s a play that has remained fresh and funny, proving once again that a strong script is rarely tarnished by time,” wrote Ken Jaworowski in his New York Times review of The Actors Company Theater’s production in 2009.

The cast is a blend of ELTC favorites and new performers. Actors who’ve appeared with ELTC before include Ken Glickfeld , Mark Edward Lang, and Maria Silverman. New to ELTC are Jennifer Bissell, recently in Mame at Media Theatre in Pennsylvania, Seth James, who performs with the American Globe Theatre in NYC, Francesca Mondelli, who works with WARP Theatre in Seattle, Bradley Mott, a regular performer at Steppenwolf and the Goodman Theatre, and Michelle Tomko who’s worked at The Cleveland Playhouse and

Actors Theatre of Louisville. On November 1 and 2, it’s Holmes and

Carter Mysteries, ELTC’s popular vintage-radio style production, complete with live sound effects and commercials, featuring Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Copper Beeches about a governess in peril, and Nick Carter and the Strange Dr. Devolo, in which Manhattan millionaires are missing.

For the holidays, from November 29 to December 14, with 8:00pm and 2:00pmcurtain times, it’s Christmas with Harte and O. Henry. Based on tales from the Old West written by Bret Harte and O. Henry, they are brought beautifully to life in storytelling fashion by ELTC’s artistic director, Gayle Stahlhuth. As in her other holiday shows, she portrays thirty-plus characters.

Along with the mainstage productions, ELTC is proud to offer its Sunday Film Series, co-sponsored with The Cape May Film Society. On June 30 at 8:30pm, to accompany ELTC’s mainstage production of Lost on the Natchez Trace and commemorate the 150th Anniversary of America’s Emancipation Proclamation, is the 2006 film Amazing Grace, about William Wilberforce’s battle to abolish slavery in England in the late 1700s.

The UndertowTerry O’Brien’s weekly column... it’s about nothing and everything, all at the same time

WELCOME, Undertowl-ings. How hast ye been since last we met on the morrow of that fell morning? Fair, I hope.

Sorry, I’m almost finished reading Lord of the Rings and I can’t stop speaking like a Tolkien character. By the way, a while back I ragged on LOTR film trilogy direc-tor Peter Jackson for some of his storytell-ing choices, but as I work through the final chapters of the book I realize a film version slavishly true to the source material would be approximately three months long. So… sorry, Peter.. On the .000000001% chance you read this, I hope it makes you feel better. (In New Zealand, it’s called Orez Tixe.)

Been a busy week here at Undertow Central as we prepare for the launch of our (my) shiny new toy, The Wild Times (which is, in a nutshell, an Exit Zero for the Wildwood Boardwalk… you’ve heard of Wildwood… four exits, about nine miles from where you’re sitting) which we’re (I’m) super-excited about. First issue hits the sands on the May 23. Which is today, I think. I’m

never really sure when the stuff I write is actually going to see the light of day because I’m bad at math and life. Regardless, check it out. We (I) think it’s pretty neat.

From 6pm to 8pm on Sunday night, the two hours I didn’t work last week, we (me, Owen, Jackson and Henry) took Cathrine out for Mother’s Day dinner at the Ugly Mug where I simultaneously, from the cor-ner of each eye, watched the Phillies mount an unlikely ninth inning comeback versus Arizona and golfer Sergio Garcia knock an unlikely two balls into the drink. Equally unlikely were the odds of watching my wife scarf down a huge chunk of prime rib, but there we were. In her defense, she has been

diagnosed as so lactose intolerant that if she gets within three miles of a slice of cheese she Hulks out and destroys a city. (Or gets a little gassy, whichever comes first…)

Anyway, her entrée was quite nice, my BBQ chicken quesadilla was tasty (though I’d have preferred a little less BBQ, a little more chicken) and my chicken chipotle Panini was fine (though I’d have preferred a little more chipotle, a little less chicken), but Owen won the day with the baby back rib lollipops and fries, which were juuuuust right. You can glean from this paragraph that I have not yet fully succumbed to full-blown anorexia yet. Though it was the big-gest meal I ate all week. In years past it would have ranked about 12th. That day.

Yeesh… it’s really hard writing this thing now that I’m not in four bands play-ing five gigs and learning 40 Beatles and/or Billy Joel songs… but karaoke! Friday Terry O’ke at Rio Station has hit its annual spring lull. With every other damn place opening up for the season that stream of karaoke singers now has many tributaries. But it’s

all good. Besides, they all end up back with me in the end… yes… come, come me pretties… into my warm, loving (sweaty) embrace…

Been having some very interesting adult-type conver-sations with Love Me Dudes bassist (and Herb Moore Trio mainstay) Terry Dougherty at our son’s Little League games (my Owen and his Quinn take turns batting ninth and play-ing right field which is what ALL the best players do… thank God they’re good at math) as we (baseball metaphor alert!) bat around ideas for our next Congress Hall open mic invita-tional in October (it’ll be here before we know it!). He says an Oldies show (encompassing the 70s and 80s… yes, 80s is Oldies now… sigh…) would be a big hit. My brother Mike is pushing a New Wave/ Classic Alterna-tive show (think The Cure, Elvis Costello, Squeeze). Me? I think a kickin’ Billy Joel show would be just fine. Or The Beatles. (Ducks beer bottle…)

Speaking of sons, my mid-dle one, Jackson Scott (awe-some name, right? Like a movie president’s or something… though most movie presidents these days are African-Ameri-can or female, tracking a meteor hurtling towards Earth. But I digress…) has been kicking all kinds of unholy butt for Cape May Dance Company as they prepared for their big show this past weekend. I am so grateful to Destiny and her crew for the hard work they put into these shows and for giving my child (and dozens of others) a chance to perform for an appreciative audience. I’ve always been a lit-tle bitter that I was not pushed in this direction when my obvi-ous, amazing singing ability became evident around five years of age. But now I can just live vicariously through him! That’s healthy, right?

My friend (and rival) DJ Jimmy J (karaoke at the Ugly Mug, Thursdays) recently began a new gig with the US Postal Service. He is also in the process

of getting his firearms license. I would therefore strongly sug-gest you sing whatever damn song he puts in for you…

Exit Zero HQ Factoid of the Week: Watching any show on Animal Planet that revolves around a “family” of animals is guaranteed to leave you in tears. Meerkats, Zebras… they all get eaten in the end. And there is very “Hakuna Matata.”

By the time you read this my new venture, The Wild Times, will be dropping jaws all along the Wildwood boardwalk (assum-ing I finish it in time, it doesn’t rain, my delivery guys can find EZ HQ, and I sell enough ads) and spreading a little of that Exit Zero panache a little further up the Parkway. This week will also see the unveiling of the new [artBOX], Exit Zero Museum Shop and Exit 4B Café, all (or most) under the auspices of the Exit Zero moniker. EZ is also opening a new beachfront store because they didn’t have quite enough on their plates. It’s been really great being involved with the company since the “ground floor” and getting paid… 50% less than I was five years ago.

Lastly this week, while I feel like I’ve been bringing you nothing but bad news so far this season, I can’t let this issue pass without mentioning the loss of our friend Daniel Quinn, who passed away after a swimming accident near his home. Dan recently relocated to Florida where he met the love of his life, Jennifer Henry, and one month ago welcomed his son, Kian, into the world. Danny was a regular at Terry O’ke when he was still in town and always performed his two favorites, “Handlebars” and “Santeria”, with as much joy and passion as he could mus-ter, redlining my amplifier and melting my speakers every sin-gle time, but all I could really do was turn down his mic a bit and smile because there was just no stopping him. Dan always had a kind word and a wide smile on his boyishly handsome face. Dan Quinn was 31 years old and he will be missed.

’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

City of Cape Maypresents

Peter Nero and the Philly PopsSaturday, May 25, 2013 at 8 p.m.‘There’s no place like the South Jersey Shore for Memorial Day weekend and no orchestra like ours to celebrate this patriotic holiday at Cape May Convention Hall,’ says Peter Nero. ‘We are honored the City of Cape May asked us to be a part of this special second annual celebration.’

‘The Cape May Convention Hall represents an economic development resource, expanding our city’s season to 10.5 months and cementing Cape May as a premier tourist destination,’ said Dr. Edward J. Mahaney, Jr., Mayor of the City of Cape May. ‘We are thrilled Peter Nero and The Philly POPS will join us again to celebrate Memorial Day weekend.’

The Old FogeyAh, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

again such a concealing costume hides my splendid abdominal muscles from the view-ing public, which is close to being an actual Sin. Then again, the widely disseminated shot of me as the body double of that James Bond actor as he strode out of the ocean (his head was cruelly superimposed on my body by Hollywood) did show the attractiveness of the briefs.

I have ruled out nekkidness, this year: I and a few others (you know who you are, my friends) do in fact look rather impressive in our birthday suits. I know this from the

W HAT beach-wear fash-ion should be set as a trend this year? It’s a burden, dear friends, being a tastemaker of

such inf luence that whatever swimming costume I choose for the first day of Summer will become THE talked-about and worn fashion item of the season.

I remember the year I opted for a gold lame posing pouch, and glistened and gleamed my way along the waterfront to admiring stares and envious whispers. The next day there was a run on gold in the international exchanges as suppliers raced to produce enough leaf to coat a million tiny banana hammocks and minuscule bikinis. Not to mention a few tens of thousands of miniature golden doggie pouches after Young Albert’s custom-made gold briefs were featured in Vogue (canine edition).

I am minded to revive the modest Victorian neck-to-toe ensemble, in broad horizontal stripes. The last time I did so, in 1897, the crowded beach resembled a colos-sal herd of zebra in the Serengeti. But then

infamous naked ping pong parties held at the D’Catur Mansion the evening of the Full Moon every three months (guests include senior local politicians and law enforce-ment, and at least one editor with a puzzling tattoo). But the masses who f lock onto the beaches are generally not best suited to hav-ing their bits out in direct sunlight (have you ever SEEN a naked Wildwooder? Few have, and survived to tell the tale). Plus, naked sweating people with less than perfect but-tocks leave a very disturbing imprint in the sand, one that is peculiarly greasy and cold to step on with bare feet, and surely not hygienic. If you see one, do not look closely into the center, for your own good.

Compare, if you will, to my own glutes’ ‘footprint’, which resembles a small perfect watermelon cut in half and pressed firmly into the sand. It puts one in mind of a tiny skateboard park, minus the graffiti, if you don’t count the tattoo of Andy Warhol’s face — that wretch did it to me after a drunken night in the Brown Room, when I refused his offer to pay for a drink with a set of terribly mundane pictures of soup cans.

Here’s To Your HealthA weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

any of my siblings or their kids smoke. The issue of second-hand smoke is why

most public places are smoke free. But the issue of third-hand smoke has started a new conversation and the research is compelling. According to research done at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center in Boston, “Third-hand smoke leaves a cocktail of toxins that linger in clothes, furniture, and carpets for hours, even days after the cigarette is extin-guished, and is dangerous for infants and chil-dren.” Some researches go farther and say that the smoke actually gets absorbed into drywall and, once there, mixes with other chemical compounds forming yet another toxic com-

MY FATHER was an avid smoker up until about the age of 60. That wasn’t at all unusual for a guy of his generation. After receiving

scholarships to play football at the University of Maryland he opted for the military and there began his addiction to cigarettes.

I asked him how an athlete like himself would even consider smoking as an option. “We had a lot of down time and they were included in our rations. Everyone did it. We didn’t even think about it as bad for us.” He finally quit after a scare with what he thought was a heart attack. It was forty plus years of bombarding his lungs with carcinogens, but what we didn’t know until later was that he was doing the same to his wife and seven kids.

Second-hand smoke became a hot topic and was criticized by the tabacco companies as nonsense. I remember sitting in our dining room next to my dad smelling his smoke and watching it swirl in the air. I even would light the match for him. That smell reminded me of him so much. It still does. Oddly, it smells comforting to me. Just as strangely, not I, nor

pound. Anyone who has ever been inside a fire

damaged home knows that remediating for smoke is not easy. According to Joel Hirshberg of Green Building Supplies, hydogen perox-ide-based products provide the best non-toxic means of cleaning walls and surfaces. Walls can be sealed with a non-toxic water-based paint and primer known as Safe Coat, which encapsulates odors and keeps carcinogens in the walls as opposed to in the air.

But even if you smoke outside your home you are covered with a mixture of cancer caus-ing agents that walk right back in with you in your hair and on your clothes. Your kids hug them, your pets lick them, your sofa absorbs them and your bed is crawling with them.

Someday a smoker may just be called a “puffer” or a “sucker” as they switch over to the smokeless nicotine delivery systems that are on the market right now, in order to keep the rest of us safe. Perhaps we need a local celeb-rity to start the trend. He or she could be seen at bars and art openings sporting a Versace “puffer”. Maybe they will have a huge beard and be wearing a bandana or something.

THE Answer Lady invites inqui-ries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quan-daries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a

query, write to [email protected] Answer Lady,When did it become okay to wear paja-

mas in public? Did I miss a memo in the past few years or something? – Curious

Dear Curious, It is not acceptable, in the Answer

Lady’s humble opinion, to wear pajamas in public. If a memo was indeed circulated, she missed it, too. It never was acceptable, is not now acceptable, and only after the Answer Lady is dead and buried will it be acceptable. And even then, she will likely still have an issue with it. Naturally, one is granted dispensation in an emergency; i.e. one’s trash cans are rolling down the street (which happened to the Answer Lady last fall and she is STILL mortified that she dashed out of her house in her purple flan-nel pajamas with the cupcakes all over them); or if a bear walks in the front door

The Answer LadyWise answers to perplexing questions

THE Answer Lady invites inqui-ries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quan-daries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a

query, write to [email protected] Answer Lady,I recently spent the afternoon on the

Washington Street Mall, and was surprised at all the women I saw walking around wearing white. White jeans, white skirts, even white sandals. Has the old fashioned guideline of white only being worn between Memorial Day and Labor Day gone by the wayside? – Wondering about White

Dear Wondering,The Answer Lady’s guess is that this

rule, in recent times, has become less of a rule and more of a guideline. It is, perhaps, a simple matter of preference. Some fash-ionistas can (and will gladly) pull off white all year-round, but for old-fashioned ones like the Answer Lady, white in the summer months only is more within our comfort zone. Breaking out the white shoes and hats heralds the arrival of summer, as much

as the turning on of Cape May’s parking meters (except in an infinitely more pleas-ant way). Whether you are a rule-breaker or a rule-follower, make sure that you shop in a place that offers good advice and guid-ance as well as quality merchandise. This is what sets the quality local shops apart from big-store shopping, from Miss Demeanor to Caroline’s Boutique to Pink. Indeed, even Cape May’s consignment shops are staffed with fashion-conscious personnel who are always ready with good advice for

the Answer Lady, who is quite incapable of shopping without a great deal of guidance.

Dear Answer Lady,I’m attending my niece’s wedding this

summer in Cape May and I’m really looking forward to it. Recently I had lunch with my sister, the mother of the bride, and she was showing me photos of the bride’s gown and the bridesmaids’ dresses. I was surprised to see that the bride will be wearing white. I don’t wish to sound out of touch, but my niece has been living with her intended for a year now, so I doubt a white wedding dress is appropriate. What is the world coming to? – Appalled Aunt

Dear Appalled, The Answer Lady is desperately hoping

that you are implying you are horrified that your niece is wearing a white gown on her wedding day because she looks TERRIBLE in white, and for no other reason. Yes, there was a time when white symbolized purity, but there was also a time when brides were sold to their husbands, and a marriage was not much more than an exchange of prop-erty. Thankfully, that time has passed.

The Movie ColumnThis week, Arts Editor Tom Sims reviews “The Big Wedding”

I HAVE become jaded by movies with big actors. Many films with “all-star” casts have scripts that are anything but! It seems like nothing can save a film doomed by lousy storytelling.

Enter The Big Wedding, a film starring none other than Robert De Niro, Susan Saran-don, Diane Keaton, Topher Grace, Amanda Seyfried, Robin Williams, and the prover-bial “more.” When I saw it in the theater, I thought, “well it’s not that bad for a dollar rental out of the Red Box,” then I remem-bered, “Hey I just paid 20 bucks to see this.”

This film is not at all bad as far as mind candy goes, especially after a long week when all you want to do is veg in front of the big screen. But with all those big actors, don’t we deserve a something more? Granted, it could’ve been worse. It did not go so far as to have some huge food fight with cake slapped into people’s faces — but it still could have been a lot better! The humor could have been more sophisticated, the plot certainly could have been less contrived, and the acting could have been done with more heart (but

is that possible when your heart’s not in it?). The story goes like this: a young cou-

ple is getting married, and the groom’s birth mother (from Columbia) is a staunch Catholic. The groom’s adoptive parents are divorced so for the weekend of the wedding (while the birth mother is in town) they have to pretend to be married. This would be okay except the adoptive father has a new girlfriend who does not at all appreciate the situation. Didn’t we see this script before?

On TV? Maybe not in quite this format, but even so, this story is contrived. Critics and audiences have severely trashed this film. Its score on Rotten Tomatoes is 8% (and yep, that’s out of 100%).

I’d have to score it low as well, but... It’s not completely un-watchable. I will admit, it was entertaining in its own way. On a rainy day, when you’ve got absolutely nothing else to do, you can rent The Big Wedding (after you’ve exhausted all other better choices) and let it take your mind off your troubles. Just try to forget that these are million dollar celebrities. Hey, for a buck at the Red Box, it may even be worth it. Maybe.

Don’t let your young filmmaker create a crappy film like this one! (I’m the king of bad segues — sorry!) Cape May Film Camp brings great instructors to the area to teach students who are enthusiastic and willing to learn about producing, directing, writ-ing, and/or acting in a film! The week-long camp starts June 24, at the West Cape May Borough Hall. Get the details at capemay-film.org.

Not even the film’s star-studded cast could save it from itself.

Looking From LowerHeroes, happenings, and a few heckles... a monthly column by Lower Township Deputy Mayor Norris Clark

AMERICAN bald eagles love to live in Lower Township, and we often see these mag-nificent creatures feeding on our Bayshore sandbars. If you

haven’t seen one yourself, check the photos on our new Township Facebook page: face-book.com/LowerTownship. The only thing more beautiful than these birds is perhaps our sunsets.

Local Heroes: Lower Township holds high praise this month for John Louderback (not that he’s seeking any). Besides the satisfaction that he and wife Kathy bring with their quality meat products at Gaiss’ Market, John quietly lifts the community in many noticeable ways. John was part of the team that re-directed the Bayshore Heritage Byway through our Township, so visitors wouldn’t miss our hidden natural and cultural wonders including the historic Fishing Creek School, our community cen-ter restoration project. The Friends of Fish-ing Creek School, chaired by John, is raising funds for the Lower Township Elementary Educational Foundation in support of early

race director of the inaugural Escape the Cape Triathlon on June 2, and to the 1,000 athletes who are coming to Lower Town-ship, boarding the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, sailing into the Delaware Bay and then, jumping! We love to see people really div-ing into our Bay and swimming safely to our shores. In case you miss it, Exit Zero will catch it all for you.

Speaking of athletics, check out all the basketball and soccer camps on that new Facebook page — did I mention that we hadve one? See facebook.com/LowerTown-ship. Isn’t it cool that Lower Township is finally up on Facebook?

A Few Heckles: Our last column cited the high unemployment in the area, and the need for some regional economic develop-ment. This prompted some of you to contact us, and ask how we could all do more. One person suggested that we set up a network-ing program in support of those looking for work. Others are offering to present inno-vative ideas to our next economic develop-ment committee. Send heroes, happenings and heckles to me at: [email protected].

childhood education using the restored one-room schoolhouse. And just recently, when we set up a “Friends of Lower Town-ship” program in support of our recre-ational programs including the Fourth of July fireworks, John was the first to become a Gold Sponsor, so now we’ll be thanking John and Gaiss’ Market all year long. And to all this we say: “Stay gold, John.”

Happenings: Let’s give one more shout-out to Stephen Del Monte, our energetic

Activity Of The WeekA weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Mark Memorial Day

MEMORIAL Day is our chance to remember sol-diers who have sacrificed their lives for the United States, and Cape May

offers several ways to mark the day.Waterloo, New York claims to have

created Memorial Day. They even have a proclamation from President Lyndon John-son recognizing the town as the birthplace of the holiday because, in 1866, it held the first documented town-wide event to honor soldiers killed in the Civil War. But south-ern women had set aside Decoration Day to place flowers on the graves of confeder-ate soldiers even earlier, and the tradition of honoring casualties of war dates back to ancient times.

In America, traditional Memorial Day ceremonies call for the flag to be raised to the top of the flagpole and lowered to half staff until noon, when it is raised to full staff for the rest of the day. This honors the men and women who gave their lives for the United States, and reflects the commitment of the living to ensure that their sacrifice is

Shore Trolley Tour on Sunday, May 26 at 12:30pm, includes coastal fortifications and a stop at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum. The Guardians of the Cape Trolley Tour (also taking place on May 26, at 7pm) ends with a visit to the Coast Guard Training Center and a Sunset Parade by the entire battalion of recruits. Following the Sunset Parade, the trolley will shuttle you back to the center of town. Or, you can head out on your own to Cape May Point State Park and visit Fire Control Tower No. 23 for a taste of what life was like for those who protected the New Jersey coast in the 1940s. For tickets and more information, visit capemaymac.org.

The Cape May County Veterans’ Bureau will hold its annual Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27th at 2pm at the Cape May County Veterans’ Cemetery in Cape May Court House. You can also honor fallen soldiers by lending assistance to the liv-ing — ask a soldier how to help, or consider getting involved in the USO’s Joining Forces effort.

Next week: West Cape May Strawberry Festival

not in vain. Since 2000, Congress has called for Americans to pause for a moment of remembrance at 3pm local time.

Cape May will mark Memorial Day with patriotic music on Saturday, May 25, when Peter Nero and the Philly POPS will hold their second annual concert at Convention Hall. For tickets and more information, go to capemayconventionhall.org. You can also learn more about the area’s military history with a trolley tour. The War at the

Lowering the flag to half-staff is an important Memorial Day tradition.

GERONIMO is a smart medium-sized pit bull who is only one year old. He

came to the shelter as a stray, but he’s a cud-dly guy with an exceptionally sweet tempera-ment. He loves going for long walks and being petted, but he especially loves being scratched behind the ears. All he wants is someone to go home with! Geronimo can go to a home with older children but not with cats and dogs. His adoption fee is $95.

KRINGLE is a handsome boxer and pit bull mix and is approximately four

years old. He loves the great outdoors! He would prefer to be with a human who loves the outdoors as well. Kringle has come a long way and really grown while under our care. He would do well in a home with older chil-dren who can understand the importance of reinforcing his training. His adoption fee is $95.

ZEKE is a three-year-old lab and shep-herd mix currently residing at the shel-

ter. He’s a fun-loving boy who can at times be on the boisterous side, but that’s just because he loves to play! Because of his size and power, he must go to a home with older children, but that’s just because of his exuberance and zest for life! If you think Zeke could fit into your life, please stop by and meet him today. His adoption fee is $95.

MADISON has got it all: looks, sass, and personality. So why has she been

waiting at the shelter for two years? She loves other cats and would be okay with a dog. She likes to play, cuddle, and be held. She’s active and very friendly. She would make the per-fect pet! Come and visit her at the shelter! Madison’s adoption fee is only $10.

INK and IBIS are brothers who were brought in as kittens with the rest

of their litter, but they have all since been adopted... leaving Ink and Ibis alone! They are one of the longest resident pairs at the shelter, and for no good reason. The adop-tion fee is only $10 for the both of them. It can’t get any better than that!

TABBY recently suffered a great loss when his beloved owner passed

away and no one was there to take him in. It was weeks before someone came to his rescue. He is very happy here at the shelter but he would like a second chance at love... He would make the perfect companion cat! Tabby’s adoption fee is only $20.

BITTY came to the shelter with her brother Benny and her sisters Bitsy and

Itty. Bitty is very social and she loves getting attention! All four siblings are very friendly and love to play – the perfect family cats! If you’re looking for a special cat to brighten up your day (or even four of them!), stop by the shelter for a visit. Bitty’s adoption fee is $35.
