Hello Neighbours! The WIA membership drive, and early bird pricing, may have ended – but it’s never too late to join. If you are interested in joining please contact me directly (contact information listed below). And, once again we are happy to say there is no increase in the cost of a social membership. Yup, that’s right, that’s SEVEN years in a row now! I would like to take this opportunity to thank Carol Tait, Alison Gzowski and all of the Ward’s and Algonquin street captains whose hard work and great energy keep the wonderful WIA going. To contact me: 416.836.9934 or [email protected] Thanks and have a great season! - Stephanie Gordon

The courts have never looked better! Thanks to the many volunteers and members who have contributed their time and energy to enhancing and maintaining our beautiful clay courts! With our amazing weather, there has been a plethora of activity on the courts this season. We have had two very well attended Round Robins so far. The male/female winners of the May 21 Round Robin were Gabriel Loubert and Diana Rowland. Winners of the July 1 Round Robin were Tony Currie and Mary Partridge. After that Round Robin, Dennis Redican and Frank Sullivan hosted their famous beer dog BBQ. They plan to host another BBQ before the end of the season, so watch for the details. The July 9 weekend, we held the club’s Mixed Doubles tournament. This year’s champions are Warren Webster and Doryne Peace. They played against Andy Bursten and Melissa Amer in an exciting final set. Our club pro, Marc Irman, has been very active with lessons this year. He hosts clinics for both children and adults of various skill levels. Check out the Association website at www.wardsislandclubhouse.com to view the full schedule, Club Rules and daily pass information and pricing. - Mike French & Yolanda Snels Upcoming Tennis events: Men’s Doubles – Sat. If you have what it takes to open one of those darn twist-off bottle caps, you are just the volunteer we need to help setup the tables and chairs an hour before the Dinner in the Park. Please make a note in your calendar and show up at the WIA to demonstrate your strength on Saturday, July 30, at 4:30. But that isn’t your only opportunity to help out – the more hands the merrier! Sell tickets, beer, hotdogs or

WIA merchandise at the Beer Gardens.

Staff the bar, sell tickets, or be a runner at Bingo!

Set up tables for the White Elephant Sale, 9 a.m., Monday, August 1.

Help out at the Kids’ Midway, Monday at 2.

We are suddenly deep in the heart of Summer! And you know what that means? It means - I can’t believe Gala Weekend is almost here! Again this year, Gala Weekend starts off majestically with the Fire Parade. We are truly a lucky bunch of people to have Shadowland and their spectacular event at our very doorstep. What a start to Gala Weekend! And, following that, what a schedule we have lined up for you! First of all – surprise! – we have BEER. Lots and lots of BEER. In the Beer Garden. Imagine! What would Gala be without beer? AND, we can enjoy having a cold one while listening to some very fine music. We have back (because it also wouldn’t be Gala without them) the Dixieland Jazz Band. As well, we will have Mama Motown, some members of whom hale from our very own Toronto Island Marina. Talking about our very own, Saturday Night’s dance will be sent into the stratosphere by the Grand Hanlan Band! Best to start exercising your taste buds now for the Dinner in the Park. It is going to be a taste sensation, and you won’t want weak Buds. In no way

will this resemble an American beer! It will be a strong Canadian Dinner in the Park! Also, whether you define yourself as a Kid or an “Adult”, there will be a set of Games for You. Tennis, Soccer, Gala Weekend Games - there will be something for everyone. Come out, and test your mettle! And don’t forget the Midway!!! My favourite challenge? Scotty’s Electric Shock Game! Don’t worry, it only sounds scary. Over the years, how many of us have scored a major Bridge Boutique find or two (or fifty)? Gala will be your chance to flaunt these priceless finds! Bella Beazer and Barb Roerick’s brilliant minds came up with a great Masquerade theme: Best Bridge Boutique Garb. Wear your favourite free item and win a prize! Now that’s win win! There will also be sales aplenty, from homegrown Arts and Crafts (and around here those arts and crafts can be pretty awesome), to the greenest White Elephant Sale you will ever see! FINALLY, it will once again be time for Jay to spin those balls! We have waited a WHOLE YEAR for BINGO. And this year, I’m going to WIN!! This year, I am really, really going to WIN. Please, please, let me win!!! - Jacquey Malcolm

Have you been suffering from itchy slider-finger? Have you been missing your Two Little Duckies, your Love Potion Number Nine, your Snakes and Ladders or your Clickety-Click? Do you have an overwhelming longing to play Four Corners, Post Office, Around the World or Full House? Well, then, answer the Call and be at the W.I.A. promptly at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday and Monday of Gala Weekend when all will be in readiness, when the doors will open to admit the crowds, and when we will be in the Air Chair high atop the clubhouse stage, to bring you your annual fix – Bingo, Island Style! Don’t miss this glorious tradition! Come join us and prove that Ward’s Island Bingo actually can be heard beyond the far reaches of Hanlan’s! And if, after all these years, you don’t know what lies behind the title of this exhortation, come on out to the Bingo and all will be revealed. - Jay Bascom

Treasure too big to flaunt? Bring a picture of items like lamps or chairs that now adorn your home. We’d love to hear if you have a story to go with it. Did you run into the donor of the item? Did they ask for it back? Did you alter it to your tastes or wear it to a wedding? Let’s all rise to the occasion and honour our unique kiosk. Be sure to join us for a fun filled afternoon at the beer garden and wear or bring your treasures. Prizes for all winners. - Bella Beazer and Barb Roerick

Dinner in

the Park

For the delectation of Gala diners, the WIA searched high and low, over bridge and dale to identify five of the most revered chefs on the Island. As you can imagine, this involved heated arguments and much verbal salad tossing. Knives were confiscated during the opening rounds of discussion. Sizzlingly saucy threats abounded. Every Master knows that there is Only One Way to Cook! Things are at a very delicate point right now, but this humble eater is hopeful that an agreement will be reached and Dinner in the Park will be a Meal to Remember. At stake? Preparation of five enormous top rib-eye roasts, cooked to perfection - five different ways. The mouth waters at the thought. For those who prefer their food unsullied by the fat of the land, Nupur Gogia will be providing Tandoori infused Veggie-Paneer Skewers! - Jacquey Malcolm

Top Chef, Island Edition Judges will wander table to table, looking for the Most Spectacular Centrepiece (or as the Americans would have it, centerpiece). Points will be given for covering all five senses. And for those of us too old to remember that there is any sense left in the world, the five are Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste and Touch. Extra points for including the Sixth Sense!!!! PRIZE: Islander Nupur Gogia, president of Island Vines and a national wine judge, will once again provide a Fabulous Wine for our prize-winning table. - Jacquey Malcolm

Start practicing now for the Annual Egg Toss. Find a worthy partner, and get ready! Or, have you ever watched the ferry guys tossing those ropes and thought, that isn’t hard, I could do better? OF COURSE YOU HAVE!!! This is your chance to show how it should be done! Also, back, by popular demand will be Manuel Cappel’s Wonky Bike (an amalgamation of Ward’s and Algonquin ~ Wonky), otherwise known as a Backwards-Brain Bicycle. It’s so simple to ride, only a child who’s never ridden a bike can do it - but try

anyway! See if you can ride this brain baffling bicycle!! Ride properly (no feet on the ground) for 10 SECONDS and you will receive a trophy! And of course, we all want to know, will Paul Horne show us his stuff this year, riding in the Slowest Bike Race??!? Or, will Tanya Golden retain her crown? Whoever wins this illustrious race (other than Paul Horne), will be awarded The Anyone but Paul Horne Trophy for Slowest Bike Rider.
