It had been four years since Iwas at the Utah Summer Games,but it was easy to remember whyI enjoy this event so much. Asusual, upon arrival we foundeverything well organized bycoordinator Quinn Pratt and allthe events came off smoothly.All we had to worry about asriders was to show up and ride.

But the Utah Summer Games,at least the road cycling events,are unique. Let’s be honest:This is not top-level competition.That’s not to say the events arenot competitive. Indeed there issome very intense competition.But few of the regular racingcrowd show up for the UtahSummer Games.

That has always surprised me,as this is in fact a four-stageevent, packed into three days,with excellent venues, and is oneof the best stage races in Utah.Maybe it is the fact that onlymedals and jerseys are awarded,with no prize money or awardsof monetary value. Or perhapsbecause it has the reputation ofnot drawing top competitors, itbecomes a repetitive cycle, withmost of the regular race crowdnot showing up because theyknow most of the regular crowdwill not be there.

I do not know. But frankly, I

am rather glad for it. It hasbecome the one time when peo-ple who like to compete once ayear, or even just once, and justfor fun, can do so without over-whelming intimidation. I thinkthat is good.

This year, we were reunitedwith Alice Pust. Once again, shewas the only woman in her cate-gory. But she loves to competea couple of times each year, andwhile she is not going to be onthe racing circuit, she takes hercycling hobby seriously. Shehas become a crowd and partici-pant favorite at the UtahSummer Games.

As usual, we also saw manycompetitors who were obviouslynot regulars on the race scene.This included many who werespouses and children of peoplewho compete more regularly.They realize they can attend anevent where they need not justwatch. They can compete them-selves in very relaxed, friendlyand encouraging atmosphere, anatmosphere where they arecheered even more for just

showing, riding and finishing.My own wife, who has little

interest in bicycle racing otherthan watching Lance Armstrongstomp on the competition in theTour de France, and occasionallywatching her husband getstomped on himself, participat-ed. I even conned my 13-yearold daughter, Marinda, into par-ticipating with promises that shewould probably be the only onein her category, which in fact shewas. Charles Rosett’s son, Max,was there competing with hisfather. Don Winder and his sonwere there. These are all peoplewe will not see at regular race.

Quinn maintains numerouscategories, both male andfemale, based on age, with 2- to3-year brackets in the teens and5-year brackets for 30 and older.And while the separate bracketsmay be, and in fact are, com-bined for the criterium and roadraces, they are always awardedseparately. Thus, if there is onlyone woman, for example, in the45-49 category, she wins andgets a medal. Just showing andracing gets recognition and anaward.

Each event is treated as a sep-arate race, with medals for thetop three in each category. Thenthere are medals for the top threeoverall, and a yellow jersey for

Alta. You gotta love thisplace. It's a real Utah gem. It'swhere one of the nation's firstchairlifts carried legendaryskiers up legendary slopes to baglegendary powder. It's where sadsacks and mining magnates alikeonce grubbed through the dirtwith hopes of turning dull rocksinto big bucks. It's where the2002 Winter Olympics nevercame, where tourists shied awayfrom in the wake of terrorism,and, for one season, where localskiers truly ruled the haunt. It'salso where a new singletrackcould add new meaning to theresort's proud motto, "Alta is forSkiers", by augmenting it withthe words, " . . . and MountainBikers."

Albion Basin Road (6.2miles, out-and-back, moderatelyeasy, 800-foot gain)

If not for a near 9,000-foottrailhead elevation, the AlbionBasin Road would be one of theeasiest rides in the WasatchRange. Inasmuch, novice bikersand flatlanders alike will likelyfeel the head-spinning and lung-constraining effects that comewith high elevation. Ride slow.Stop from time to time, and youreyes will feast on formidablepeaks of naked rock and on vastmeadows that read like entirechapters torn from a PetersonField Guide to wildflowers.

Directions are pretty straightforward: Start at the informationbooth near the end of the pavedLittle Cottonwood Canyon Road,and head up the dirt and gravelAlbion Basin Road. Your desti-nation is Albion Campground,where you can top off yourwater bottle before hiking to asecret lake on the Cecret Lake

Interpretive Trail (bikes prohibit-ed). Retrace your tracks downthe road, or veer left and link tothe Albion Meadows Trail for abetter taste of what mountainbiking is all about.

Germania Pass (8.3-mileloop, strenuous, 1,900-foot gain)

If you reminisce of the dayswhen bikes were rigid and lycrahelmet covers were vogue, thenyou need to go ride the oldRustler Run race course overGermania Pass, just for old timesake. If you're not an old school

hold out, then the scenery aloneis worth your effort.

Start from the Wildcat base atGoldminer's Daughter Lodgeand take a jaunt on the Alta Trailto the Albion Day Lodge. Climbthe gravelly Albion MeadowsTrail for just over a mile to Alf'sRestaurant, and go right to thebase of Sugarloaf Lift. Now youclimb. The old miner's road risesdirectly beneath Greeley Ridge,crosses Backside bowl, andcurves around Glory Hole basin.You can practically count the100 turns you could make if you

skied off the ridge above. Pumphard under Sugarloaf Lift, andveer right to reach GermaniaPass at the patroller's cabin.

Hunker down for a wilddescent on the rubbly serviceroad, which curves throughBallroom bowl and down to thebase of Germania Lift. Yourbrakes will smoke on the finaldescent across the bottom ofAlf's High Rustler run back tothe Wildcat base. Pop intoGoldminer's Daughter for afrosty beverage (open Thursday-Sunday) to give cheers to thisclassic tour and to bemoan thatexpert racers used to have to ridetwo laps!

Boulder Basin Trail (8.3mile-loop, strenuous, 1,800-footgain.)

"Get back to that bit about anew singletrack," you say?When combined with theCatherine's Pass Trail and theAlbion Meadows Trail, theBoulder Basin Trail loop takesyou on an up-close tour of Alta'sall-time classic powder stash. Atthe heart of this ride is a shortbut well-crafted one-laner thatruns through the shadow of theinfamous Devils Castle area. Youhave to be good with your "left-and-rights" because there areseveral unsigned turns, and evenif you're an admitted Alta-holicwho's privy to the ski patroller'sterrain code names, you'll besurprised at how different theworld looks without its blanketof downy white. Rest assured,you can't really get lost becausegravity will always steer youhome safely.

Head out from the AlbionDay Lodge, and climb theAlbion Meadows Trail to the topof the Albion Basin Road. Hopon the Catherine's Pass Trail, and

pedal and push your way up thesteep narrow gulch. About .8mile up, fork right on a faintpath that runs across SupremeBowl and drops to the camp-ground. Or, go for broke, crestCatherine's Pass for a gloriousview into Brighton, and take thecutoff trail on the return. Thetricky part of the ride is findingBoulder Basin Trail. Go leftfrom the campground road,climb about a half-mile pastsummer homes, and watch for anunsigned trail forking right.You'll climb a bit more thancurve across a tongue of chunkyrocks that has spilled from theCastle's ragged wall. If you lookup, you'll see that there is nochair lift providing access to thebowl; skiers have to hike andtraverse diligently to "get thegoods."

The trail turns to smooth-run-ning dirt, darts into the conifers,and descends quickly through ajunction with the Cecret LakeTrail; then it wanders past mono-lithic boulders dressed withdainty flowers before meander-ing playfully down the length ofthe basin to Alf's Restaurant.Reconnect with the AlbionMeadows Trail and glide to thebase.

Trailhead Access: From I-215,take Exit 6 (6200 South, SkiAreas). Travel east on 6200South then south on WasatchBoulevard and UT 210. Followsigns for Alta and Snowbird.Drive 8.5 miles up LittleCottonwood Canyon Road fromthe flashing billboard to the endof pavement at the Albion base.

There is nothing like firsthandexperience to open--or evenchange--your mind about some-thing. With enough first handexperience it is even possible tostart questioning the dogma andstart to seek the truth.

I have enjoyed a good deal oftime riding my trusty Bike Fridayaround different parts of Europeand past issues of Cycling Utahcontain some reports from thesegreat trips. My work gives me theexcuse and the mechanism, but theriding and just being in Europe arewhat really takes me back. I fitthe rides in during breaks in themeetings, on extra travel days Iadd wherever I can, and some-times even during vacations thatbegin or end with a scienceengagement.

Like most of us who have beenlucky enough to have our bikes inEurope, I am a long time fan ofthe European approach to cycling.It is not an exclusive sport prac-ticed by a tiny bunch of lean peo-ple with shaved legs. Instead it is amajor mode of transportation,making up a substantial portion ofthe trips that residents of TheNetherlands, Belgium, Germany,Austria, Italy, and France take intheir daily travels. The lean folksin lycra are there, but they are stilla tiny bunch compared to themasses who would no sooner havetitanium on their trusty iron steedsthan they would pack concealedweapons or care who wins theSuperbowl.

What we who love cycling alsobelieve as an issue of faith is thatthe reason Europeans ride so muchis that they have miles and miles--kilometers and kilometers, actual-ly--of perfect bike paths. Theywalk out their doors, slip onto aseparate bikeway with never a carto threaten them, and even enjoy aseparate system of lights manag-ing each intersection or roadcrossing. Motorized vehicle justdo not exist in the world of aEuropean cyclist and so, of course,they all ride bikes. Simple, right?

The logical extension of this

situation is, of course, that untilwe in North America create a sim-ilar system of safe, clean, hermeti-cally sealed bike paths, only thebrave and the insane (or both) willride bikes. Riding with motorizedvehicles is just too dangerous, andwill always be until we have whatthe Europeans have, millions ofdollars (and Euros) worth of per-fect bike paths. Simple, right?

Well I am here to tell you thatit ain't that simple! Like mostinteresting things in life, the truthcan be much more complicated--and interesting--than the dogma.And this dogma of cycling only

working when cyclist andmotorists live in separate worlds istoo insidious and dangerous toleave unchallenged. For if webelieve it, then we will never havea significant number of peopleusing bikes.

If one actually spends sometime riding in Europe, especiallywhen one leaves the major urbancenters that are held up as stellarexamples of bike culture likeAmsterdam, Freiburg, orStockholm, one sees a very differ-ent world. There are bike paths, atleast at times and for short tomedium stretches. And some

intersections in Dutch villages dohave separate little crossing lights.But there also many stretches inwhich cyclists ride the roadsalongside motor vehicles, some-times on striped lanes but some-times with nothing more than afew centimeters of roadside pave-ment.

Most routes of any distanceinclude segments of all sorts. Oneminute a separated bike path, thenext minute an unprotected roadcrossing to the other side of theroad and a section of striped bikeroute. There are times when thecyclists ride against the flow ofmotorists, there are times whenthey suddenly join that flow. Andmany many times, cyclists mustcross the motorized routes, at dri-veways, intersections, and variousforms of traffic circles ("round-abouts" in the jargon). To put thisin a local context, there are manycases in which the bike routes inEurope would never pass theguidelines that our friends at thetransportation planning offices tryand apply to bike routes in Utah.

So why does cycling theseroutes seem to work?

I believe there are a couple ofreasons. The first and probablymost important is that motoristsknow how to drive in a way thatrespects the rights and the needsof cyclists. After all, mostmotorists have been and many stillare cyclists themselves. And mostof them know that in a court casefollowing a bike/car collision they

will typically lose if they have nottaken every possible precautionaround cyclists.

So when motorists approachfrom a sidestreet or driveway, theyactually stop before the edge ofthe bike path or sidewalk. Theylook and see if the path is clear ofcyclists and only then the pull outto the edge of the road and startlooking for cars. When motoristsmake turns, they check over bothshoulders to see if a cyclist isnearby and might be endangeredby the turn. And when a cyclist istaking a lane on the roadway, themotorist of course slows down andwaits until there is safe space topass.

The second reason the systemworks is most cyclists actuallytravel at a fairly slow rate ofspeed. Trying to go at race oreven workout pace, I often foundmyself boxed in and having to bevery careful--not to avoid cars, butto avoid other, slower cyclists andthe odd pedestrian. I once fol-lowed a local racer through a setof small villages in the easternNetherlands and realized that hepaid almost no attention to thespecial bike signals or even bikepaths. He just went whenever andwherever there was space.Motorists seemed to tolerate thisapparently reckless approach andwe had a fine time.

So the good news is that onecan create a cycling system thatworks without the enormousexpense of separated bike pathseverywhere with separate lightsand control systems. The moreimportant message, I believe, isthat even if we did try and create aseparate-but-equal road system forbikes, it would likely fail unlesswe addressed the real problem--the attitude of motorists.

Changing attitudes is a hardproblem but it is not impossible.Education of new drivers, publicservice messages for the existingones, and high public profile state-ments from our political leaderscan all help. Laws that encourageand support bike use and enforce-ment of existing laws to protectcyclists from being bullied off theroad are additional measures thatcould work in our local area.Training cyclists of all ages abouttechniques and strategies that willget them around with confidencecan help people to escape theirfear and use the roads and routesthat we have now.

So we do not have to envy ourEuropean friends their perfect bikeroute system, instead we can worktoward a home grown solution thatwill work for us. I believe such asolution does include bike routesand even the odd path, but it mustincorporate other essentials likeeducation of motorists andcyclists. We just need to shakefree of the dogma and get to thetruth.

Sitting in the saddle all day long is painful enough, but sitting inthe seat with a saddle sore can make you think twice about going fora ride. Don't be embarrassed, every cyclist that puts in the miles willget one. So what is a saddle sore? It's an infection in your crotcharea that starts as a little red pimple like thing. Usually they only lasta couple of days but left untreated it can become a hard, red,inflamed mess that you don't want to sit on. In the worst cases theseinfections spread to other areas and can become large sores, boils orcyst that might require a bit of surgery to get rid of. Saddle soresusually start life as a bacterial infection called staphylococcus thatgets forced into the skin from the pressure of sitting on the seat allday. Prevention is the key. A good high-end pair of shorts with a nicethick pad can help. You really should have a few pairs of shorts andNEVER wear a pair of shorts twice before washing them. Youshould also clean your private area with an antibacterial soap. I useHibiclens which is available in the first aid section at the store. Ifyou do get the symptoms of an early saddle sore take caution. Youmight try a different style of seat and when riding stand more fre-quently than you normally do. Clean the area frequently and keep itdry by sleeping in the buff so you don't sweat at night. Do not putany ointments on it. These tend to keep the infection alive. Youmight also need to take a day or two off the bike and let it settledown. If the little buggers still persist, go to the doctor and talkabout getting on an oral antibiotic to kill the infection. Once againprevention is the key. Use good quality clean shorts, strong antibac-terial soap and keep the area dry.

Ouch!!Saddle Sores are a Pain! By Thomas Cooke

Every 4th of July, Elko,Nevada is home to the NationalBasque Festival. This year wasthe 39th annual festival, and thefolks from the Elko Basque Clubbrought back a tradition that hasbeen missing from the weekendlong activities for the last tenyears. To kick off the weekendlong festival, the Basque Clubhosted a criterium around Elko’sMain Street city park. I hadreceived an advertisement for therace months before, but didn’tmake up my mind to go until thelast minute. We have beenmired in the dog days of summerwith this Salt Lake City heatwave, so motivation to makeplans to travel to a bike race hasbeen hard to come by lately.There was the promise of a largecash prize list; $1000 to the win-ner and guaranteed cash all theway down to 20th place. Therewas also the promise of cashprimes. The prize list remindedme of some of the big moneycriteriums I had competed inback in New England years ago.The whole week leading up to arace like that, you can spend alot of time daydreaming abouthow quick you could spend

$1000. Some of the local racers who

didn’t go roll the dice in Elkomight have had family obliga-tions. Things like neighborhoodbarbecues, fireworks with thekids or maybe the beginning of along weekend away from bikeracing entirely. All of those rea-sons are understandable, but Istill think you need to take achance every once in a while. Itook a chance and drove to Elko.When we arrived at the park, itwas hot and windy, but the largetrees in the park provided plentyof shade, if you could find aplace that wasn’t alreadyclaimed by the locals who wereentrenched in their barbecuespots for the day. I had predict-ed the prize list would drawsome riders from Californialooking to make a few bucks,but as the Pro/1/2 start timecrept closer, it was obvious thatthe turnout for this one would besmall. Regardless of the turnout,the organizers of the race had aprofessional looking start finisharea with announcer’s stand andpodium. Curious people had setup lawn chairs all along thehome stretch. When we werecalled to the line, I felt like wewere racing for something or

someone. These people seemedgenuinely interested, which is aremarkable breath of fresh air.The spectator demographic atmany of our local races is oftenthe same; other racers, wives,husbands, kids and dogs. Therewas a little bit of tension andexcitement on the start line ofthe Elko criterium, and I liked it.

Despite a tiny field of 18 rid-ers hoping to scoop up someElko gambling money, the actionwas fast and furious from thegun. The Master of Ceremonies,an older gentleman wearing aTour de France Maillot Jaunewhich bore the autograph ofMiguel Indurain, shot his pistolin the air and we were clipped inand fighting tooth and nail forthe first corner. Around the firstcorner, I wondered who wasgoing to attack first? I guessedlocal hero Mike Peterson washoping to make an impressionon his familiar roads and maybesneak away for the first prime.The course was smooth and fast,and as we calmed down to acomfortable pace, JohnnyOsguthorpe fired the first bullet.We crossed the line completingthat first lap with the field strungout in a straight line, then primebell rang, meaning the announc-er was going to make us put on ashow. I went for that first prime

I can’t keep a bike in onepiece these days. I have a lot ofbikes, relatively speaking, and Ican’t seem to keep one of themin any state of rideability, nomatter how hard I try. Maybe it’sa hazard of being in the “busi-ness”, I don’t know. I guess itgives me an okay excuse for notriding consistently.

I recently made what Ithought was a statement on thisissue when I methodicallyassembled several of the “ k e ep-ers”, one at a time, and tookthem from the temptations of theshop environment to my base-ment, not to be disassembled -ever!

Well, that lasted about sixweeks. First to come apart was aDeRosa. Someone needed a nicewheelset in a hurry. I tried tostop myself at the very moment Iwas saying, “I have a yaddayadda set on a bike at home.”“Grrr, why did I just say that?”Next thing I knew, the poorthing is sitting in a corner, minuswheels, derailleurs, shifters andbrakes! What a sad site! OleUgo would not be pleased.

Before the dirt was shoveledonto that DeRosa, I foundmyself shlepping a Bianchi intothe shop to harvest the Chorusgroup from it for a friend andlong-time customer who wantedto drape his new frame with aChorus kit. Here I go again,“Well, I’ve got a Chorus kit on abike at home...grrrr, what am Isaying?”

Now, I have four preciously builtand untouchable bikes in variousstates of disassembly creating aboneyard in that dark corner ofthe shop, and no current rider toeven ride around the block for asoda! I’ve even built a couple ofreplacement Salt Cycles bikes,sold them. Grrrr. I think I’mgoing to come in under the cloakof darkness, late on a weekendnight, and build them all, thensneak them home, and ask mycoworkers to kick me any time Istart to mention that I have thisor that at home. I doubt I’ll havetrouble getting them to agree tothe kicking part of the arrange-ment.

Heck, (my heck?) I even soldmy coworker/buddy Rich’s bikea while back, while he was look-ing! I guess nothing is sacred,although it was just a run of themill aluminum bike, it was noteven mine to sell. I tried to tellhim that I was doing him afavor, but he gave me the gasface anyway. It’s a sickness thatI can’t seem to get over. I’ve got

to lay off selling other people’sstuff though. Or open a shop thatdoes that....There was a time when I rodethe same frame and equipmentfor two race seasons, save forthe tires and chain. You’d thinkit’d be the other way around,with the active race bike gettingnew widgets and dolled up on aregular basis, while the old fatguy just keeps everything thesame year after year. I wish! I’vegot one older DeRosa that hasbeen built with every version ofCampy’s ergo stuff, only to beharvested like a ripe fruit treeevery year. There’s somethingincongruent with new RecordCarbon Ten on a fifteen year oldSLX frame.

So I just pile it in the bone-yard, and wait for the shoe toswitch feet, and some customerto come in with an older Recordkit that I can harvest from hisbike for a change. Hardly everhappens though. Even in thecase of the new groups that wesell, I ask sheepishly, “so, whatare you going to do with thatolder Campy group?” “Handsoff vulture!” is the usual reply.Man, I can’t get a break.

My favorite question fromcustomers is becoming “so, whatdo you ride?” “Hmm, what doI ride? Well....if I had wheelsand brakes, I’d ride this one, orif I had derailleurs and a saddleit’d be that one, or if I had.....”We usually just end up laughing.Then I try to counsel them to notdo what I do... unless, of coarse,all their stuff comes back home

to us.Someone who calls himself a

friend said that I should just selleverything except one bike. ThenI would be pressed to keep itintact. What kind of silly, mis-guided logic is that? Onebike?!... One bike?! Wha’the...How can someone even thinkthat? A person can’t have justone bike! I mean, what if I sellsomething off it, then whatwould I do? Huh? Grrrrr, I kindof see the point, I guess.

But nooo, he’s not going toget me to fall for that. You see,this so-called friend rides thesame size bike as me. I see himworking! Besides, which bikewould I keep? There’s a chal-lenge for you: choose your onekeeper bike. Out of all of them,mountain, road, cross, com-muter, single speed, cross coun-try, dually. Harder than itsounds, isn’t it?

Even as I look over at theboneyard, I can justify each ofthose beached ships lying there.And someday, they’ll all rollagain, I suppose. It may be foronly another six weeks, beforebeing harvested and thrown backto the boneyard. At least there isa positive - all these nice bikesaren’t getting thrashed, or stolen,or broken. Maybe I should justlook at the pile as a museum ofsorts. That’s it, I’m preservingthese things for posterity. I’ll betUgo feels better now, too.

The City of Evanston,Wyoming, and Paul Knopf havebecome well-known for putting onone of the best stage races in theIntermountain area, the HighUintas Classic. Fresh from their1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th placings inthe Pro-1-2 State Road RaceChampionship the week before,the Logan Race Club again domi-nated, with the State Road RaceChampion Sandy Perrins garner-ing the overall High Uintas win,John Osguthorpe taking 3rd, andKirk Eck finishing 5th.

The focus of this stage race isthe 70 mile road race from Kamas,Utah to Evanston. Leaving Kamason Saturday morning, the raceclimbs up the Mirror Lake high-way to an elevation of 12,000 feet,and then descends rapidly for 20miles before making the long fin-ishing run into Evanston. Theroad race is then followed up onSunday by a morning time trialand afternoon criterium.

Local prodigy David Zabriskie,currently racing with LanceArmstrong’s US Postal team, wasin town for the event. He, alongwith Osguthorpe, Perrins andBurke Swindlehurst (Navigators),formed the winning break in theroad race while ascending themountain. They then workedtogether to maintain their break till

15 miles before reachingEvanston.

At that point, Zabriskie began“mashing and rode away”, Perrinsrelated. He soloed in for the winwith a large enough margin toapparently secure the overall gen-eral classification title.Meanwhile Osguthorpe, Perrinsand Swindlehurst sprinted for sec-ond, a sprint that Perrins won, fol-lowed respectively bySwindlehurst and Perrins.

Zabriskie, however, after therace was riding without a helmeton. While acceptable in Europewhere he spends the majority ofhis time, this is unacceptable inthe liability conscious United

States and aclear violationof USCFrules. Asresult, he waspenalized fiveminutes bychief refereeGary Bywater,thus makingPerrins thestage one win-ner and drop-ping Zabriskiefrom apparentGC winnerright out of

contention.

This leftOsguthorpe,

thanks to his 15 second bonus forwinning the King of the Mountaincompetition, and a 5 second bonusfor finishing third in the road race,at the top of the leader’s board.Swindlehurst was in second over-all and Perrins in third.

The next morning, riding inreverse order of their finish in theroad race, Perrins put in an excel-lent effort in the time trial, catch-ing and passing Swindlehurst whostarted 30 seconds ahead him, andputting another 20 seconds onSwindlehurst by the finish. Healso finished well ahead ofOsguthorpe, won the time trial,and vaulted into the overall lead.

Swindlehurst, who also finishedahead of Osguthorpe in the timetrial, remained in second overall,with Osguthorpe in third.

Big Cottonwood Hillclimb

The inaugural Big Cottonwood Hill Climb may very well bethe little sister to the Snowbird Hill Climb up Little CottonwoodCanyon. But its differing characteristics make it a unique race inits own right, as attested to by its first winner, Jeff Louder. “It is alittle more tactically interesting than [the] Snowbird [Hill Climb].”

Louder’s sentiment was echoed by the women’s winner, MarenOsguthorpe. “Tactics has more of a role to play in this race.” BigCottonwood Canyon has several shorter, steep climbs, but much ofthe canyon consists of longer, less strenuous stretches of roadwhere watching and playing off others can make the difference ina race. As Osguthorpe stated, “This is a totally different racebecause of the difficulty of having to stay with a group.”

Louder’s winning time was 50:13:21, while averaging 23.5miles per hour up the canyon. Osguthorpe winning time was57:49:78. Finishing in order behind Osguthorpe were Jen Ward,Laura Howat, Daphne Wilhelm and Laurie Humbert.

Starting en masse, the racers departed from the parking lot ofthe Porcupine Pub and Grill at the base of Big CottonwoodCanyon. Ryan Littlefield (First Endurance) set the pace the firstfew miles up the canyon through the extremely steep and toughStorm Mountain section where the race began to break up. Thefinal selection occurred a couple of miles later just above the well-known s curve.

Just after the s-curve, where the road continues to climb steeplyfor the next half mile, Louder began setting tempo, a tempo, how-ever that only four others could match. Christian Johnson (NewMoon/Utah Premier), Sandy Perrins (Logan Race Club) who wascredited by Johnson with “doing the lion’s share of the work” upthe canyon, Maren Osguthorpe’s husband John (also Logan RaceClub), and newcomer Chris Chamberlain (9th a& 9th), were theonly riders able to stay on Louder’s wheel. This elite group rodethe next several miles together.

Just before the Silver Fork Lodge, Osguthorpe attacked, but theothers responded and stayed with him. Louder then counterat-tacked, and this time only Osguthorpe could respond. Havingshed the three others, Louder immediately jumped again, and thistime not even Osguthorpe could match him. On the steep pitch infront of the Silver Fork Lodge, Louder had established his claimto victory, and soloed the remaining miles to the finish line in the

Louder, who is living and rac-ing in Ostende, Belgium for theLandbouwkrediet-Colnago team,has been in the states a couple ofweeks to do the USPRO NationalRoad Race in Philadelphia wherehe finished 57th and visit home.At Philadelphia, “I stayed withthe favorites when I should havebeen up front [with the break]making the favorites chase.” Thefavorites were able to out climbLouder on the famed Manayunkwall, thus leaving him to finishwell down the standings. “I hadbetter legs than I rode.”advantageand put the hammer down.

However, Humbert waited forHowat, and then hammered on thewindy stretch along Interstate 15and much of the uphill stretch toget Howat close to the group.Humbert’s effort got Howat closeenough to allow Howat to rejointhe lead group just before the startof the bell lap.

The lead group pacelined thelast lap and stayed together for thefinal dash on the gradual uphill tothe finish. “I was alone in the

front group, but with the knowl-edge of the sacrifices that put methere, I was determined to doeverything I could to make itworthwhile. ... I gave everythingfor that sprint and thankfully I wasable to deliver the win.”

Dodge finished behind Howatto take second, while KellyCrawford (Bingham’s) finishedthird.

In the Men’s Pro-1-2 race, theLogan Race Club snookered therest of the field. Putting togetheran excellent plan and effectivelycarrying it out, they sprung SandyPerrins on a gutsy solo effort thathe succeeded in parleying into achampionship ride.

The 72-mile race consisted of12 laps (6 miles each), and Perrinssolo ride was launched with about5 laps to go. The chase groupconsisted of Kirk Eck, AllanButler and John Osguthorpe (allLogan Race Club), Thomas Cooke(X-Men), Ryan Littlefield (FirstEndurance), Art O’Connor(Guthrie’s) and Christian Johnson(New Moon). With numbers intheir favor, the Logan Race Clubriders were able to control thechase group, allowing Perrins togut out his solo ride to victory.

To top off their day, the Eckand Butler were able to lead thechase group in for second andthird places, and Osguthorpe fin-ished behind Cooke for fifth,thereby garnering the top threeplaces, and four of the top fiveplaces for the Logan Race Club.

TANDEM TASTERS

My wife, Karma, and I areplanning to ride the annualSeattle to Portland (STP) ride onour tandem. This has become akind of family tradition, as Ihave ridden this ride with eachof our three oldest daughters.This year, I managed to coerceKarma into being my stoker forthis year’s event.

In the course of training,Karma and I often stop to eatsomewhere along the road. Idecided this was a good opportu-nity to try some new and unusu-al places, and thought I wouldpass our experiences andthoughts on the tested cuisine onto our readers.

For the first column, I want toreport on our experience atTacos Daniel. This is a small

Mexican restaurant located at1013 North 900 West, Salt LakeCity (521-9404). I was intro-duced to this café a few yearsago by our editor, David Iltis,and had been telling Karma eversince that I was going to dragher there one day. Well, drag-ging was unnecessary, as I con-trolled the bike and simplysteered us there last month.

Tacos Daniel sits in a simplered brick building in the stronglyHispanic part of Salt Lake.Karma and I were quite a sightas we pulled up in lycra shortsand shirts, fingerless cyclinggloves and funky looking hel-mets. We were definitely seenas an odd couple, as evidencedby the stares we received as weclacked on our cleats to a table.

When I say this is a Mexicanrestaurant, I am not just talkingof the cuisine. Karma and Iwere the only light-skinned peo-ple in the place, and everyone

else was talking away inSpanish. The menu was primari-ly Spanish, with one page devot-ed to the Spanish-challenged.Observing some of what wasbeing served to others, I couldtell certain of the menu itemsfailed to make it to the Englishlanguage page.

The atmosphere is convivial,especially among those whospeak Spanish. It was evidentthat many families make thistheir destination for a Saturdaynoontime meal. The walls arepainted a lime green, with repre-sentations of several menu itemspainted on the walls. One cor-ner was devoted to a statue ofthe Virgin Mary, and a Lakersjersey was hanging close to thecashier’s box.

I selected a vegetarian burri-to, while Karma chose a chileverde plate. I decided my burri-to was called vegetarian simplybecause it had no meat on it. Intruth, it was a bean and cheeseburrito, but the best bean andcheese burrito I have had.

Karma hit the jackpot. Herplate came with pork, which hada perfect crispness to it, beans,rice and tortillas. In trueMexican tradition, she rolled thepork and other items she desiredinto a tortilla to eat. I made hershare, and must admit it wasexcellent

Along with our meals, wewere served with warm tortillachips and a spicy salsa.

While eating, a pair of sere-naders came round and offeredto sing and play some romanticMexican music to us. It sound-ed like a great idea, till he said itwould cost us $5.00. I shouldnot be such a tight wad, I sup-pose, but I am, and I lied tothem saying I did not have $5.00to pay for a their music.

For a great ethnic experience,of which the excellent food isjust a part, ride (or drive, if nec-essary) to Tacos Daniel. Youmay look odd in your cyclingclothes, but they will treat youwell, and you will be treated tosome of the best authenticMexican food in town.

positions in the general classifica-tion, Perrins and Osguthorpe rodedefensively in the criterium, theirsole objective to markSwindlehurst and not allow him toescape. This worked well, andallowed a solo breakaway byButler to stay away for the criteri-um win.

The Women’s Category 1- 3group, while small with only fiveriders starting in Kamas, neverthe-less resulted in a hotly contestedfinish, both in the road race andfor the overall title.

While they stayed togetherthrough the lower miles of theclimb toward Mirror Lake, thepace quickened just before reach-ing the Provo Falls area. Thissplit the riders apart, with MarenOsguthorpe (Biogen) pushing intothe lead. Jen Ward(Porcupine/Bicycle Center) stayedwithin sight of Osguthorpe, how-ever, and caught up with her justpast the feed zone.

Together they rode to the top,with Osguthorpe sprinting aroundWard to grab the Queen of theMountain title and bonus seconds.Ward and Osguthorpe then rodetogether over the top of the pass,and down the other side all theway to Evanston where, again,Osguthorpe outsprinted Ward towin the road race. “It is easier tosprint than to ride all the way toEvanston alone,” Osguthorpewould say. With the QOM 15 sec-ond bonus and the 15 second vic-tory bonus, Osguthorpe was sit-ting in first place by 20 seconds.

(Ward had picked up 10 bonusseconds for placing second in theroad race.)

Kelly Crawford took third,coming in almost 20 minutesbehind Osguthorpe and Ward, but9 minutes ahead of fourth-placedRachel Cieslewicz (New MoonMedia/Utah Premier). By virtueof these time differences,Crawford was assured of 3rd placeoverall.

In the next morning’s timetrial, Ward struck back, finishing56 seconds ahead of Osguthorpe.She was now in first place overall,36 seconds ahead of Osguthorpe,and the final placings were to bedetermined in the afternoon cri-terium.

Osguthorpe calculated shewould need to win the criteriumand finish 22 seconds ahead ofWard. With that margin and the15 second time bonus for winningthe criterium, Osguthorpe couldsteal the overall win from Ward.On the third of ten laps, the bellrang for a $20.00 prime. AsOsguthorpe would explain, “Onewoman took off a little and I justlet her hang out there for a bit.Coming into the straight away shestood up to sprint, but I flew pasther on the inside, because I willdo just about anything for twentybucks.”

Osguthorpe went on to explain,“Having a jump and being com-pletely anaerobic, I decided tohike my skirt up and try to stayaway!” Anaerobic or otherwise,she rode the next 7 laps full out,and in so doing managed to put 50seconds between herself andWard, more than enough to securethe overall victory.

and won it, sprinting out of thelast corner and crossing the linewith a comfortable margin, onlyto be dismayed by the sound ofthe bell again. It was going tobe a long 70 minutes.

What happened after that ismostly a blur. I latched on to thetail end of what became a five-man breakaway that eventuallylapped the field. The group wasJeff Louder from the BelgianDivision 2 LamboukredietColnago pro team, new state roadrace champ Sandy Perrins and AlButler from the Logan Race Cluband myself and X-Men teammateTodd Hageman. We agreed earlyon to split all the primes and keepthe train rolling. We worked welltogether until the last few laps,when Jeff decided it was time totear it apart for the finale. At one

point the announcer made a call tospectators to come up and "placeyour bets". On the last lap, Toddwas able to latch on to anotherLouder attack. I was forced tomark Sandy and half-hope that hewould drag me up into a positionto contest the final sprint. If not, Iknew the X-Men had a shot withTodd hanging on Jeff’s wheel. Itwas a pretty solid plan, but it did-n’t materialize. Sandy nevercould close that initial gap, so ourchance of the win and $1000 wasin Todd’s legs. Jeff left nothing tochance and attacked Todd wellbefore the line. Maybe riding inEuropean Spring Classics with thelikes of Johan Museeuw and PeterVan Petegem gave Louder the legsto rip up the finish like that.Maybe the fact that his father Kenhad won this same race over 20years ago inspired him to push alittle harder for that line.

After the race, most of us hungout in the shade of the park.There was some downtime whileresults were being made officialwhich some of us killed by eatingchorizo and drinking beer. Thepromoter of the race was graciouswhen handing out the prize checksand thanked us all for coming. Itold him I thought this was thebest race of the year. He askedme what he should do to change itand make it better for next year. Isaid don’t change a single thing,we will take care of the rest.Word of mouth has a way ofspreading like wildfire amongstbike racers. I hope anyone whoreads this will consider spending4th of July in Elko next year.

the overall winner in each cate-gory. Invariably, there arenumerous categories wherethere are only one or twoentrants. But that’s just fine:They step forward and get theirawards just like everyone else.

Frankly, I would hate to seethis change. While it may begood for road racing in Utah ifthis event became a premierevent, something would be lost.Something intangible, butimportant, to those who willnever race seriously, or whomaybe will but are initially aretoo intimidated to join in a highlevel event.

I like the road racing portionof the Utah Summer Games.Just as it is. My hats off andcongrats to Quinn Pratt for theexcellent job he does, and thegreat opportunity for relaxedand enjoyable competition heprovides to all those who partic-ipate. We will be back.

On the evening of July 14th,Bill Harris sprinted to victory inthe Master’s National CriteriumChampionships which were heldin Bakersfield, California, end-ing a long journey to claim astars and stripes jersey. Bill hasbeen gunning for a Master’s titlesince 1997 and was able to

claim his this year while manyof his family members werewatching on the sidelines. Billwas competing in the 35-39 ageclass and had to go up againstthe likes of former Olympian

gold medallist Steve Hegg. Ithas been much publicized thatthis was to be Bill’s last yearracing, but when asked if thismeant another year for the cur-rent points leader of the UCA

The Yellow Jersey was notpublished in the United Statesuntil 1996, though originallypublished in a time when coun-tries competed in the Tour deFrance. The book’s main charac-ter is 35 year-old EnglishmanTerry Davenport, a veteran of 16years in professional bicycle rac-ing. After a year off of the bikehe is put in charge of a team ofriders from various countries toosmall to have their own nationalteam.

The book is written throughthe eyes of the main character.His team he bluntly calls, "apoor lot, save for Romain’sclimbing ability. I’m not beingbig-headed when I say I can beateach and every one of them atthe sprint-8 out of 10 anyway."Romain is his personal project.A 22 year-old rider fromLuxembourg with tremendousclimbing ability but needs helpin time trials and anything thatresembles a group sprint. Inputting the team together for theTour de France, Terry has to dealwith the abilities, loyalties andpersonal goals of the varied rid-ers he has inherited. Davenportnot only helps Romain train, butalso mentors him in life, forRomain is the boyfriend ofSusan, the daughter ofDavenport’s fiancé. DespiteDavenport’s current employ-ment, he seems more interestedin becoming retired again in aposition that doesn’t require a lotof time.

Part one of the book is ablend of romance and relation-

ships mixed in with racing andpreparation for the Tour.Davenport juggles his time withPaula, his fiancé and her daugh-ter Susan, and then discoversanother woman in his life. He isalso training to be a "non-racer"for the sake of Romain.

Part II of the book is the Tourde France where Terry findshimself fired as the team manag-er but is rehired shortly beforethe start. He is also part of theteam as a rider and learns firsthand who is riding for the teamand who is not. He tries to findtime between stages for his rela-tionships, which keeps the novelmoving and interesting. Witheach stage of the race you willfind yourself anticipating thenext chapter, no differently thanyour anticipation of the nextday’s results of the latest Tour deFrance race. Throughout theTour you feel a part of the race.Terry describes the approach up

the Alps. "It’s really somethingto see a climber waiting toattack. Any other sort of attackcan be neutralized but when aclimber goes there’s little thenon-climbers can do. To carryme through today, my only planis to get over the two big colswith as little suffering as possi-ble and try to keep up by makinga fast run down. Romain has ahundred-yard lead now.Suddenly he looks round andsits up, waiting to be caught. Buthe’s made it too obvious; anexpert like van Faignaert won’tfall for that one."

The New York Times bookreview compared this novel’sstyle as descended fromHemingway. It is easy to read,simple text and good characterdescriptions, similar toHemingway. I thought it readbetter than Hemingway, perhapsdue to the bicycle theme.
