With local cycling sensationDavid Zabriskie in town, I took theopportunity to sit down with him onAugust 31st for a relaxed interview.David invited me to his mother'shome and gave me the time Idesired to question him.

David is an affable young manwith a sly sense of humor. Ienjoyed my interview with him, butwas caught off guard momentarilyby his statement, as you will read inthe interview, that Cycling Utahneeded to print a retraction of astatement, in its article on his win-ning the Snowbird Hill Climb in1998, that he punched BurkeSwindlehurst. Then, seeing mymomentary surprise, and with thatteasing look in his eyes, he laughed.

I was in fact surprised because,as I informed him, I wrote the arti-cle, and did not remember anythingabout him punching Burke. I didpromise to review the article, whichI did. In fact, I reported only that

Burke claimed David had blockedhim, twice, from coming around atthe finish line.

So, no retraction is necessary.But I thank David, once again, for afun and entertaining interview. Itwas an enjoyable break from thedaily grind at my office, and it willbe an entertaining break for you, thereader, as you read this interview.Enjoy.

DRW: You were withUS Postal for a couple of year.DZ: Yes

DRW: Describe yourexperience with US Postal?DZ: When I was inthe US Postal Service, in the begin-ning it was very hard for me toadjust to the new style of racing. Itwas much more difficult and therewere some other things in my lifethat were changing. For the firstyear it was very hard and then thesecond year was much better. Thethird year I had a really good strongpart of the season, then I got hit by

a car. In the fourth year, it was justme trying to come back.

DRW: Describe yourexperience with CSC.DZ: It was complete-ly different than US Postal Service.I feel like I have imaginary armsaround me and around the team justholding us together. Everybodygets along really well and there isjust a bunch of really neat guys. Ifeel comfortable; I feel that every-one takes an interest in people.They are very intelligent with thetraining and SRM, the powermeters. Bjarne [Riis] was one ofthe first to use it in training camp.We got results at dinner. He calcu-lates everybody's [results], youknow. “You need to train with thesenumbers, you need to train here,you need to train here,” for everysingle person. It is completely dif-ferent. When things go bad is whenthey come and help the most. Thereare people there that do not haveany kind of any cycling background

at all. They have military back-grounds, but it translates over intocycling somehow, and the wholeteam and how we need to be togeth-er. It is a neat experience. It is anexperience that will help me evenafter cycling.

DRW: Describe BjarneRiis.DZ: He's a verystrong person, very quiet, verythoughtful. He thinks a lot. He isalways thinking and kind of talks alittle with a delay, but that is just hisstyle. Maybe his English stylespeaking. But he cares so muchabout this team. I know in the pasthe has put his own money into theteam to help float it. I am happy forhim that he got the sponsorshiprenewed and for more money andhe can make a lot of people happyand himself happy. To see the wayhe puts the stress on himself at theraces because he wants us to do sowell, it is crazy that he cares thatmuch about it. When Ivan [Basso]had the troubles in the Giro[d'Italia], he was close to crying.He's a good guy.

DRW: Speaking ofBasso, how do you think he will doin the upcoming years in the Tour?DZ: He's only 27.It's strange for me because he isonly a year older than me, but heacts, he carries himself with somuch class and he is so nice. Sinceday one, when I met him. Real niceguy, great to work for him and to bearound him. He has offered me anapartment next to him in Milan togo and train. I am going to do that.We've become friends really quicklyand he is a super nice guy. I thinkhe will win the Tour eventually, Idon't know when, but I think he isdefinitely capable of it. He seemedto be the only one attacking Lance.

DRW: How long isyour contract with CSC?DZ: It ends nextyear. Bjarne, being the kind of per-son he is, from what I have donethis year, he was saying ...to forgetabout it and we will open it up andmake something new. For sure it isgoing to be two more years and wewill talk seriously about a third,probably this weekend. Somethingthat I don't think US Postal wouldever do to any rider. It kind of killsthe incentive to do well.

DRW: Yeah. USPostal [Discovery] has had all thesegood support riders but they keepleaving. I did not know if that wasbecause they were unhappy or ifthey just wanted to see what theycould do as a team leader.DZ: Some of that isbecause they want their own glory.Another part is that you're only inthe sport for so long, your careerends at 35 maybe. You've got to dowhat you can as far as money andmonetizing time.

DRW: Right.DZ: The thing thereis, any result you ever got is incom-parable with what they [USPostal/Discovery] had with Lance.You say, “Hey, I got fifth in theWorlds,” or “Hey, I won the nation-al championship,” and they say,“We have the Tour de France win-ner.” That is the kind of attitudethey have. They feel like peoplewill come to the team and basically

Cyclists in Utah watchedwith increasing alarm lastyear at the rise in injuries andfatalities to bicycle riders onthe roads of the state. Thisconcern came to a head lastfall when Josie Johnson, agraduate student at theUniversity of Utah, was hitfrom behind and killed whileriding her bike up BigCottonwood road. Her deathwas the result of an extreme-ly negligent motorist.Following this tragedy, agroup of concerned cyclistsgathered together to host amemorial ride in tribute toJosie and all other cyclists inUtah injured or killed whileenjoying their sport. Nearly athousand cyclists showed uplast year on a cold and blus-tery day in late October totake part in the JosieJohnson Memorial ride.

This year, in continued trib-ute to Josie and other fallenriders, the second Josie

Johnson Memorial Bike ridewill start at 12 noon in SugarHouse Park on Saturday,October 15th. Riders willgather at the south end ter-races of the park and ride tothe mouth of Big Cottonwoodcanyon. The organizers havedesigned bright-coloredcycling jerseys and t-shirtsspecifically for the event,complete with a share-the-road message on the back.Donations for the jerseys andT-shirts will be encouraged:donation envelopes will beavailable. Mayor RockyAnderson and other localbicycle advocates will speakfor a few minutes about theirgoals to support safe bicy-cling in Salt Lake City and inthe state of Utah.

Following these brief com-ments, 2005 Tour de Francestage winner and YellowJersey holder Dave Zabriskiewill lead the ride to the mouthof Big Cottonwood Canyon.This ride will not be a timetrial and speeds will be helddown such that young and

old, and fast and slow riderscan equally participate.

At the mouth of BigCottonwood Canyon, currentbike project leaders will detailprogress reports and answerquestions. Three projects -bike lanes on Wasatch Blvd,a bike lane up BigCottonwood Canyon, and thecountywide bicycle route map- are in early concept phasesand there will be the opportu-nity to provide suggestions tothe organizers of these pro-jects. There will be amoment of silence in com-memoration of fallen cyclists,and then a return toSugarhouse Park alongWasatch Blvd. The ride routeand other information areavailable at www.slcbac.org.

Funds raised from thisyears ride will be used to sup-port a new statewide bicycleadvocacy group, the UtahBicycle Coalition. Instead ofdirect payment for jerseysand T-shirts, the organizersare requesting donations thatwill be used to help establish

this group and fund futurebicycle advocacy projects.

This event will serve as amedia and public educationopportunity. The singlebiggest reason motorists donot like sharing the road withbicyclists is because somebicyclists disregard the lawand ride irresponsibly.Bicyclists need to respect sig-nals and traffic law if theywant any respect in return.We ask that all cyclists takingpart in this ride set a positiveexample for responsible bicy-cle riding.

For Motorists:1. Bicyclists have the samerights to the road asmotorists. They are permittedto ride in the center of thelane when unsafe conditionsexist, and to ride 2 abreastwhen not impeding traffic.2. Leave at least 3 feet whenpassing a bicyclist (it's thelaw). If there is not enoughroom on the road, do notpass.3. Look for bicyclists before

turning at all intersections.Do not pass a bicyclist andturn right in front of them.4. Make sure a bicyclist is notapproaching from behindbefore opening your car door.

For Bicyclists:1. Ride in the same directionas traffic and ride as far rightas practical. If unsafe condi-tions exist (shoulder debris,lane too narrow) you are per-mitted to ride in the center ofthe lane.2. Make yourself visible bywearing bright clothes andusing lights and reflectors atnight. Signal your intentionsto turn or change lanes.3. Obey all traffic signs andsignals. DO NOT run red lights orstop signs.4. Ride no more that 2abreast and only when notimpeding traffic.

Today’s lifestyle can be hec-tic: work, wife, kid, house, and aslew of other obligations. It’s go-go-go, don’t let up, and don’tlook back. For many, however,mountain biking offers a briefbut welcomed respite from thedaily hustle by coupling thenuances of nature with two-wheeled bliss for a deep cleans-ing of the body and soul. Sowhen my wife, Tricia, anddaughter, Joanna, granted me a“cleansing” break last weekend,I bolted out the door with sparksflying from my heels. “Be backin three hours . . .,” I shoutedthrough the ‘hood as I screecheddown the road. I had faith thatmy ride bag was pre-stocked forsuch an occasion: If I had for-gotten extra Clif Bars then I’d gohungry; no water and I’d bethirsty; no bike shorts and I’dwear my civies; no shoes and I’dgo bare foot. I did, however, takethe extra second to make suremy front wheel was in the truck.(Yes, I forgot my front wheelonce–only once. And you can’timprovise that!)

As I headed up 3300 South toI-215, I had only minutes todecide where I’d pursue my sin-gletrack bliss. The likely candi-dates where Park City, BigCottonwood Canyon, or MillCreek Canyon. With drivingprowess that would have landedme a commercial gig as a “pro-fessional driver on a closedcourse,” i.e., a last-second three-lane head fake before the onramp, I swerved south on routeto Mill Creek. And as I ralliedup the canyon, squirming intobike clothes and fumbling forClif Bars, I paged through vol-umes of mental notes to formu-late a ride plan that would maxi-

mize my singletrack pleasure,and get me home on time.(Tricia has long-since adjustedmy ride itinerary for “Bromkatime,” a simple multiplicationfactor of 50 percent.)

I calculated trail mileages andestimated ride times. Big WaterTrail: 6.5 miles round trip, 50minutes. Much too short. GreatWestern Trail to the Mill CreekCanyon divide: 9.2 miles roundtrip, 1 hour 30 minutes. Time to

spare. Big Water-DesolationTrail-Wasatch Crest-Mill Creekloop: 13 miles (I think), 2 hours(maybe). Bingo.

Helmet, gloves, water, ClifBars, keys–check. I charged upBig Water, and within minutes Ibecame fixated on the beads ofsweat splattering off my top tubeand the seconds ticking away onmy cyclometer. In my periphery,

a blur of trail-side pastel blendedwith the woods’ ever green, andI sensed alternating warmth andcool as I rode through mottledshadows. For 1.5 miles to theGreat Western Trail junction, Iagonized over which direction toride the upcoming loop; then myfront wheel decided for me bypointing straight ahead up BigWater.

By the time the dogs at DogLake cocked an ear to myapproach, I was skittering downthe steep, gravelly, rut-of-a trailto the Mill D North junction,where I dismounted without hes-itancy or humility to hoof it upthe steep, gravelly, rut-of-a-trailtoward Lake Desolation. Back inthe saddle, the Desolation Trailbeckoned my granny gear for aslow, tedious, delightfullypainful climb through flickeringaspens and past sun-kissedmeadows to the trail’s namesakelake. The backbone of theWasatch Range rose above me,and one more “character-build-ing” low-gear pump brought meto the loop’s highpoint on theCrest Trail.

I scrolled through mycyclometer’s data on the flywhile choking down a Clif Bar. Iwas half way around the loop,but three-quarters of my allottedtime was spent., I summoned myrace skills from a decade ago,but my withered legs and rustyreflexes didn’t respond like theyused to, and I got spanked like anewborn while wobbling overthe choppy rocks. But gravity isa powerful force and it was onmy side along the loop’s “backnine.” In short order, I was free-wheeling confidently past theoverlooks of the Canyons Resortto the Mill Creek Canyon divide,stopping twice to give ascending

bikers the right of way, naturally.Time was ticking as I angled

down upper Mill Creek Canyonin haste and with a plum of dusttrailing me. My accompanyingshadow stretched to three timesmy height, and it danced playful-ly across the basin’s grassyfields while the sun longed torest its head on the horizon. Iwas flying, and my wheelsseemed to hydroplane across thetwo creek crossings.

The Great Western Traildipped and dodged through thedark timber on a rolling butgradually descending course. Ifelt the knobs on my tires gripthe firm dirt, and my bike’s fullsuspension, although not neededfor the smooth trail conditions,gave a magic carpet-like ride.With stealth, I passed, and prob-ably embarrassed, a lady bikerjust as she was giggling withglee, but farther down the trail, Itoo found myself chuckling withuncontrolled joy.

The return flight down theBig Water Trail was icing on thecake, for no other trail in theWasatch is as smooth and forgiv-ing. I let off the throttle but did-n’t lollygag and only featheredthe brakes to keep my speed incheck. My bike gently pitchedand rolled through the conifersand I felt punch-drunk with con-tent. The “cleansing” was com-plete, and a week’s worth oflife’s toxins vanished into themountain air.

Back at the trailhead, I could-n’t care less about how long theride took because it was timewell spent. Still, I peaked: 13.5miles, 1 hour 55 minutes. Sweet!As I jumped into my truck, Ioverheard a biker revelingamidst her groupies about theBig Water Trail, “that was somuch fun.” Yes, despite myCharlie-Hustle approach to theday’s ride, it was fun, andalthough I ride a fraction of whatI used to, I cherish every ridebecause mountain biking isalways just that–fun. And I madeit home with 30 seconds tospare!

Doha, Qatar, is not on anyone'slist of favorite places to ride, it'shotter than Phoenix, flatter thanFlorida and there is constantlymore sand blowing around than in

Las Vegas. None of these are topchoices for riding a bike. No onewould want to ride each day there,unless perhaps you're living inDoha. The terrain and weatherconditions are tough enough, butmix in a bit of political uncertaintyand danger, and then cycling forfun or fitness becomes sort of ananomaly in a place like Qatar. Butjust about every morning, thatvery anomaly occurs in andaround Doha, in the form of asmall peloton of cyclists, a micro-cosm of riders from all over theworld who have at least one thingin common. And that's a love ofthe bike and the need to ride.

My pal Dave Morris, known asElvis to many in this cycling com-munity and the bike industry as awhole, is part of this group. Daveis living and working in Doha fora company that is serving supportfor the military action in theregion. It's a long way from homein the literal sense, and a long wayfrom the bike industry where Elvishas worked as a sales rep and inshops since leaving the Air Forceseveral years ago. But thanks toonline markets like ebay, Daveand his riding buddies can feedtheir habit for bike stuff and keepon the road, even in this tinydesert nation on the edge of thevirtual powder keg that exists inthe region.

That road is tenuous, though,and his stories serve as a reminderto his friends back here that ouroccasional brush with a pickuptruck mirror or expertly timed carhorn might be pretty small beansin the scope of on-bike dangers.We're pretty free to take any roadthat looks interesting, or that cir-cumvents a nasty hill or congestedintersection. In Doha, there is real-ly only one safe route, and if thereisn't a group of ten or so like-

minded folks who want to ride,there is no ride that day. There ismore safety in numbers.

Relative to the rest of theregion, Doha is a safe haven forAmericans, but there is still thevery real threat to life if one does

not adhere to the weekly militarynotices outlining off-limit loca-tions, travel routes and activitiesbased on intelligence informationgathered. The café or marketwhere you ate dinner or shoppedlast week may be a no visit zonethis week, and failure to pay atten-tion or adhere to the informationcould be disastrous. That kind ofvolatility can cut into your mileson the bike as well. As we ridehere in the states, we hear certaintypes of vehicles approachingfrom behind and brace for a yelledcomment from the window or theafore-mentioned horn blowing asthe vehicle passes. In Qatar, theseriders, whether American,Japanese, French, Irish, Saudi,Australian, Philippine or Germanwonder if the approaching vehiclewill pass without gunfire or otherloud and deadly action.

To date, there have been nosuch attempts. Dave attributes thisto the inclusion of the Qatarinational cycling team (yes, there isone) as part of the group, and to aspecific time of day and very rigidroute taken. The same flat, hot,windy and out of the way routeevery single day. Dave says that amajor part of the reason for theout of the way route is not onlysafety from bad guys with gunsand bombs, but safety from Qatari,and Middle Eastern in general,drivers who flail their Mercedes'and American SUV's through thestreets like bumper cars at a carni-val. The roads are smooth as glass,unless you happen to be out dur-ing the mid day heat, when yourtires stick to the melting asphalt.He says the biggest hill on theentire route is the extra thick painton the road at a particular intersec-tion. He jokes with me that it's the

It took almost two yearslonger in transit than it shouldhave. But a massive nationaltransportation bill that canadvance bicycling in many waysfinally arrived at the station.Congress approved andPresident Bush signed the Safe,Accountable, Flexible, EfficientTransportation Equity Act: ALegacy for Users. Now it's upto Congress to supply the moneyfor it and for states, communitiesand bicyclists take advantage ofthe opportunities that runthrough 2009 - when Congresswill have to undergo the sameprocess all over again.

While current programs, suchas Transportation Enhancementsand Recreational Trails will con-tinue, it may take a year beforeCongress can actually appropri-ate money for new programs andeven longer for the money to getdown to the state and local leveland the street.

But at any rate, we will seethe following changes.

Recreational Trails Program

As for the Recreational TrailsProgram, its authorization willbe increased from the previousmaximum of $60 million to $70million in FY 06, $75 million inFY 07, $80 million in FY 08 and$85 million in FY 09. The legis-lation also adds several changesto the program. On the one hand,it allows “assessment of trailconditions” and safety and envi-ronmental education (either indocuments or classes) as allow-able activities for grant funds.Grants can also support “non-law enforcement trails safety”patrols. But the law also saysthat any new trails on federallands must first be put in a“statewide comprehensive out-door recreation plan.”

The law already allowed pro-jects to use other federal moneyas part of the required matchingfunds - and now it will allowstates to cite recreational trailsfunds as matches for other feder-al projects. And grantees cannow count the costs of planningand environmental compliancespent before the grant arrived as

part of the match. (The lawrequires that Western states putup 10 percent of project costswith non-federal money; mostprojects exceed that.)

The U.S. Department ofTransportation (DoT) will“encourage” states to use youthconservation or service corps tobuild and maintain trails.Previous drafts of the billincluded a controversial provi-sion that would have requiredtheir use when possible.

Safe Routes to School

Many communities havealready developed Safe Routesto School programs. But for thefirst time, a specific federalfunding stream can devolve tocommunities through statesspecifically for projects toencourage children to ride bikesand walk to elementary and mid-dle school. The program can get$100 million in FY 06, $125million in FY 07, $150 millionin FY 08 and $183 million in FY09.

Each state must get at least$1 million a year. States can usethe money themselves or send itto local governments and non-profits via grant competitions.

States will have to appoint acoordinator for the program andDoT will monitor the programand spread information.

Other Benefits for Cyclists

The bill also makes the fol-lowing changes in law:

• States can use federalHighway Safety ImprovementProjects money to pay for bicy-cle safety improvements, includ-ing signs at bike-road crossings,specifically (but not exclusively)in school zones.

• State transportation depart-ments will have to identify haz-ards to bicyclists in their strate-gic highway safety plans. Thehazards can include railwaycrossings, unmarked or poorlymarked roads, and specific dan-gerous locations (intersections,hills). States will also have to tryto figure out how to remedy theproblems they find. States mustdevelop the plans by October2007.

• The Highways SafetyResearch & Outreach Programwill get about $142 million ayear to develop traffic safetymeasures, including bike safety.

• A new AlternativeTransportation in Parks & PublicLands program, operated jointlyby DoT and the InteriorDepartment, would get $25 mil-lion a year. Grantees woulddevelop ways to reduce traffic innational parks, national wildliferefuges, federal recreationalareas, national forests and otherfederal land. Projects could buildbicycle facilities.

• And while it may not seem tomake much sense, the legislationwill allow bicyclists to ride inlanes reserved for high occupan-cy vehicles on highways - butstates can also keep bicycles outif they determine and DoTagrees they “would create a safe-ty hazard.”

Marissa and Russ have been car-free for most of their timetogether, including the past 16 months. Marissa who answered thequestions is also the youngest profile for this column. There is abook currently being written about car-free and “car-lite” peoplewhich may have quotes from several people from Salt Lake includ-ing Marissa.

Cycling Utah: Given your age, you grew up during a time when caruse per capita greatly expanded. In the book Asphalt Nation, (JaneHoltz Kay, 1997, University of California Press) women quadrupledtheir driving from 1983-1993. So why don't you have a car and doyou miss running around town and doing things that your friendsdo?

Marissa B: I don't have a car because they are expensive, perhaps upto $500/month. The last car I had was on lease and when the leaseended that was it-no car. Russ kind-of influenced me. He hasn't hada car in a long time and always biked everywhere. I don't miss run-ning around town like my friends because I still do them. I meet myfriends on my bike, go shopping or have lunch with them.

C.U.: What is the biggest hassle; what is the greatest benefit to beingcar-free?

M.B. Sometimes it is a hassle to bring home a large item, like a vac-uum cleaner. Most shopping is easily done on my bike with a back-pack. If I plan on buying a large item, I can ask one of my familymembers for assistance. The main reason we would use a car wouldbe to go camping in the mountains. The biggest benefit is being out-doors and getting a little exercise throughout the day and knowing Iam not contributing to the air pollution.

C.U.: How far do you ride during a typical day doing all that youneed to do? Have you moved or changed jobs to accommodate beingcar-free? Have you changed who you socialize with?

M.B.: I ride from 7-20 miles daily. I live in Sugarhouse section ofSalt Lake City. Work and almost everything I need is within a 20minute ride from my house, so my I haven't had to make anychanges in my life such as work, where I live, or who I socializewith.

C.U.: How do people react when you tell them you do not have acar? Do they act annoyed or do they act like you should be pitiedand offer you rides even though you are content to ride your bike?Perhaps a bit of both?

M.B.: People generally say that is great that I bike to work anderrands, though in a manner that suggests it is not for them. Peopletreat Russ like a poor transient! I haven't had any people act annoyedthough many do feel sorry for me and offer rides. I politely tell themI have a ride already!

C.U.: Do you have more or less free time being car-free?

M.B.: By biking or walking, it is almost like having free time. As Isaid before, most everything I need is less than a 20 minute bikeride, so having a car won't give me more time, and possibly a carwould give me less time in the long run, given the responsibility ofhaving a car.

C.U.: What do your parents think?

M.B.: My parents think that it is good that I am saving money. Theyare willing to give me rides when we go out together. They havebeen supportive.

C.U.: Given our car culture, what do you see for the environment20,30 or 50 years from now?

M.B.: People will use the car more and more until the environment,costs, hassles, etc. get really bad for the majority of people. I wouldhope that in 20 years that the population would wake up and think ofalternative commuting resources, rather than thinking they HAVE tohave a car! Some of my family can't imagine not having a car.Maybe it is easy to think that, until you don't have a car and realizehow unnecessary it can be. The environment is really suffering fromthis way of thinking. People want to have clean air, less noise, andless congestion, but they aren't willing to DO something to haveclean air, etc. Each one of us must do something to help the environ-ment instead of just talking about it. I hope we don't have to wait 50years.

DRW: You won thePrologue and wore the yellow jerseyfor a couple of days. Have you hadother teams asking you to sign con-tracts with them?DZ: Yeah, for sure.There's interest. It comes. But if Iwent to any other team, it would bea step backwards even though itmay be for a little more here orthere. I would just come back. Ithink that this team, for sure there isa lot more inside of me and theyknow it and they see it. There isthis man that they want me to gosee in October or November, sometime this off-season. No bikes, justme and him, two weeks. Just lethim, he called it, go inside of youand brings the real you out andthings like that. That's the kind ofstuff they do. I know there is moreinside of me and I feel that with thisteam it has a better chance of com-ing out. It might not, but I think ifthere is a team that can bring it out,it is this team.

DRW: Certainly withBobby Julich they really revitalizedhis career.DZ: Like I said, if Iwent to Telecom, that would be it.Maybe I would get a lot of moneybut what would I be doing? I wouldbe miserable and it wouldn't beworth it.

DRW: As to your Stage1 win in the Tour, everyone knewyou were a good time trialist.Through unexpected, it was not areal surprise that you were able towin the stage. I know thatArmstrong had ideas on leading

from start to finish, but you put ahole into that plan. [Zabriskiesmiles]. There was some talk thatthe wind conditions may havefavored you over Armstrong. Doyou think that was a factor?DZ: I don't think itwas that big of a factor. The armyperson that we have has some reallyaccurate meteorologist in Denmarkin the military and they said thatwind would be favorable from theback in the early part and then turna little bit. I don't think it made thatmuch difference. I mean [Laszlo]Bodrogi went before me and he is agood time trialist also and I took aminute out of him. He and I wentat almost at the same time and Itook a minute out of him so I wasobviously going fast.

DRW: What did it feellike, wearing the yellow jersey?DZ: It feels good. Inever planned on it. It feels good.

DRW: The photo wehad of you on the July issue ofCycling Utah was from the teamtime trial during which your falloccurred. Did you ever figure outwhat happened? You have probablybeen asked that a million times.DZ: Yeah. I don'tknow. When I stood up the tire wasoff the outside of the rim so maybethat is what it happened, it flippedoff. I'll never know.

DRW: You did nottouch a wheel?DZ: No. There wasa large gap in front of me.

DRW: My heart sunkwhen that happened.DZ: Yeah.

DRW: You stayed inthe Tour for about another week. I

never did really hear why you with-drew. Did you have injuries fromthat fall?

DZ: I did the firstcrash, and then the next day I waspretty sore and beat up. The dayafter, I fell down on some railroadtracks again. The next day, I startedout on the climbs and I could not goup hill. Both my arms were bad,and my breathing hurt that day. Ifinally got over those climbs and Iwanted to stop there. Somehow Ifinished that day within two min-utes of the time cut. The next day, Iwent to the race early and did awarm up. I tried to do everything Icould but it was impossible. I hadno power in my legs and I had tostop.

DRW: In terms of thefuture, I have people ask me if youcan win the Tour someday. How doyou see yourself as a potential con-tender in future stage races?DZ: It is possible.It's not something I am putting a lotof pressure on myself, but more ofthe media pumping it up thanmyself. I know that I am at leastcapable of stage wins, a good stagehere and there, doing a lot of work,being a real team player. If it turnsout in the future, you know, ifsomeone wants to push me in thatdirection, such as Bjarne, I will tryto. Right now I know what I amcapable of, I don't want to beweighed down right now by think-ing about all of that. I will do whatI have done and have fun with it.That seems to be when I do thebest. [The Tour] seems like thelongest shot possible. I can climb, Ican time trial.

DRW: Obviously youare a good time trialist.DZ: There are things

that are in me, but like I said, thereare things that are not in me. Oneof the things is the fighting thathappens in the peloton. It's almostlike you can't care about your life attimes. If you lose your concentra-tion, you are at the back. That isthe hardest part, focusing for six (6)hours straight. It is the most intensefocus. All these things happening.It is really crazy. There are sometimes when you are sitting and itslike, “This is not worth it.”

DRW: You referred tothe fighting in the peloton. Are youreferring to jostling for position andstaying in front?DZ: We are goinglike 60 kilometers an hour. It's likethis, you know. [Zabriskie positionshimself next me, crouched in a rid-ing position, and starts leaning andhitting hard into me.] If you'retense, they'll hit you and you willfall. When you are going that fast,you have to stay relaxed. It is achallenge because everyone isthinking, "I have to be at the front."Everybody is trying to stay relaxedbut everybody is going as fast asthey can. It is the worst in the Tour,by far. Every day is like Liege-Bastogne-Liege, shoulder to shoul-der and boom boom. Other racesare not so bad, you can go to thefront. There, it is insane. The guy Ineed to see, he does these things onyou that try to help relax you thatare really good. It is just, if you canjust relax and put yourself some-where else and not think about howfast you are going or how manypeople there are. Sometimes youlose it, and when you lose it, -. Forpeople that have never experiencedthat, ---. And that's what separates,you know, that intensity and energy.But they're really crazy.

DRW: I didn't get into

bike racing until I was 35, so I havenever experienced that intensity. Atmy age, we all agree we are too oldto being doing that kind of stuff.DZ: Think of thefastest you have ever gone beforeand then think of 40 guys in front ofyou, 40 guys in back, on the sides,and try to stay as relaxed as you canthrough the turns, the radio's in yourear, and with the cars and heli-copters, you can't hear, and try tostay relaxed. And all you hear is,"Go to the front, go to the front!"

DRW: How old wereyou when you started racing aroundhere? I remember you winning theSnowbird Hill Climb one year.Burke Swindlehurst was in thatrace. Maybe you won more thanonce, but that is the one I remem-ber.DZ: No. Just once.We should print a retraction in thisarticle that I never punched BurkeSwindlehurst after the finish line.[Zabriskie laughs.]

DRW: I don't evenremember anything about you doingthat.DZ: I didn't. It was atight finish and somewhere in thearticle in Cycling Utah it was like,“After the finish line Zabriskiepunched Swindlehurst.”

DRW: I'll have to lookat that. I actually have the article.In fact, I wrote the article. I can'timagine me writing that.DZ: If it's in there -

here in Salt Lake, would you say,were the biggest influences withyou?DZ: When I started,around here it was the whole RockyMountain Cycling Club. My firstride, I remember the names. It wasRob Macleod, Shaun Dalby, andMike Newberry. Brent Farr wasalmost like a dad to me. He's awe-some, a super nice guy. Alwaysthere. Funny and good to bearound. Then, Ryan Littlefield, asfar as the racing. He started takingme around the country. My firsttrip with him was Super Week inWisconsin. They took me backthere so I could do the juniornationals in Wisconsin. And then,of course, Steve Johnson, he gaveme my first VO2 max test at the U[University of Utah]. Bill Harrisstarted to do the training. Quite afew people.

DRW: This was your first Tourde France and I presume, althoughyou don't know for sure, that youwill you be racing it again nextyear.DZ: Yeah.

DRW: Will the Tour beyour focus during the coming year,or will it be other races as well?DZ: Of course thereare other races. I think I could wina couple of smaller small stageraces.

DRW: What do youthink about Basso's intent to raceboth the Giro d'Italia and the Tour?DZ: He wanted towin the Giro because he is Italianand because he knew Lance wasgoing to do the Tour and that makesthe Tour unwinnable. He reallywanted to win the Giro before hismom passed away. He had a lot onhis shoulders. He told the media,"I'm going to win the Giro for mymom." He probably should nothave voiced these things so early inthe race. I think maybe they were alittle too overconfident. To come

right out and say, "I'm going to win,I'm going to win", it was like henever saw Lance. For seven (7)years in a row, [Lance] alwayspointed at someone else. "Youshould watch Ullrich. You shouldwatch him or him. Don't look atme. I'm just an older guy fromTexas.”

DRW: Speaking ofthat, Jan Ullrich always seemed tobe the only guy capable of defeatingArmstrong. Do you think Ullrichhad the ability to beat Armstrongand just did not rise to his potential?What about next year?DZ: I think[Alexander] Vinokourov and Ullrichcan win. I think Levi [Leiphiemer]can do well, too. I think[Alejandro] Valverde. He's good,and he's young, too.

DRW: It used to be thatpeople did really focus on morethan just the Tour. What about theriders and about Europeans in gen-eral?DZ: Europeans, theypay attention to a lot more. ForAmericans, it's the Tour. Maybethey would pay more attention ifthere was more media, but the Touris what gets the media. Some peo-ple think that it is the only race ofthe year.

DRW: OLN broadcastthe Giro and the Vuelta a Espana acouple years ago. Now you don'tget anything except maybe an hoursummary when it is all over.DZ: They only showthe end of the race. The most excit-ing part is the first hour to see howit all forms up and then you canreally see the tactics. "That teamhas a guy up there but we don't,we've got to chase," and you cansee it form. It helps people under-stand.

DRW: Armstrong hasmade the statement that he lovesriding his bike. I have often won-dered if bicycle racers on the pro-fessional level enjoy riding, or dothey race because it is a sport theycan excel at? When you are done

racing will you still ride your bike?DZ: Yeah, for sure. Ilove it. It is driving me crazy that Icannot ride with this thing [a caston his hand from a glass cut] andfor me it is the part I love. I lovegoing out and riding my bike, prob-ably more than racing. But the rac-ing helps. It gives you some moti-vation. There comes a time in theseason when you hate the bike. Youdon't want to look at it. You don'tlook at it for a week, then you wantto ride.

DRW: In the Pro Tour,they have the individual classifica-tion, but they also have the teamclass. Is CSC leading that?DZ: The last time Ichecked they were.

DRW: How importantare team placings versus individualplacings?DZ: For our team, tobe at the top of that classification isimportant. Bjarne gets really excit-ed about that. People don't call ourteam "CSC", they call it "TeamCSC". It is a team and that is how[Bjarne] explains it and that is howwe are portraying it and that is whatwe are. It is the truth and I knowthat he is really excited. I knowthat he is probably pushing peopleto stay up there so we can get ontop of that. I think that probablymeans more to him than individualthings. He likes it, he loves it. Ifwe stay up there and win, that prob-ably is going to mean more to himthan what it would mean to anyother director.

DRW: I remember Riissaying before the team time trial inthe Tour that he really believed CSCcould win and nobody took thatvery seriously. But for your crash,do you think you would have wonthe team time trial?DZ: It is hard to say,it was real close. Chances are goingto go up if things don't go wrong.

DRW: How importantis equipment in racing, or do yousimply take whatever the sponsorsgive you and is the equipment all

pretty equal?DZ: Last year itseems that we just took what thesponsors gave us. Obviously, westill take what the sponsors give uson this team but I see Bjarne takinga lot more interest in the equipment.He picks it out himself and he reallyis very finicky about everything.He wants us to have the best equip-ment because we are the best teamin the world.

DRW: As a rider, doyou notice differences between theequipment from year to year?DZ: I did. I noticedit a lot this year. I like it a lot more.It feels more responsive to me.

DRW: In the Tour, howdo you keep your energy level upday after day after day?DZ: Years and yearsof building up for something likethat. That's what it takes now. Thiswas my first Tour and that was afteryears of building my base. It takesit out of you, definitely. By the endof the Tour your eyes are sunken inand black. It is not easy. If youbelieve that you can adapt to it, thathelps.

DRW: I am sure youget plenty to eat and the right kindof food.DZ: Yeah, all of thatand staff is so important becauseyou can't be afraid to ask for any-thing. Every time you stand up togo get something, it takes energy. Areal nice staff will get you anything.Being around people you like isimportant. I don't think you can doit when you don't get along withpeople. Everybody just has to help.

DRW: You are engagedto be married now.DZ: Right.

DRW: Is your fiancéefrom around here?DZ: Yeah, she grewup here. She went to Highland.

DRW: Is Salt Lakegoing to be your home, your homebase?

DZ: Yeah. It will bewhere most of my belongings willbe.

DRW: Will she be liv-ing in Europe with you while youare racing?DZ: Yeah.

DRW: Are you goingto learn to speak Italian, or maybeyou do already?DZ: I do a little. Iam sure I will pick up more.

DRW: Tell me againhow you hurt your hand.DZ: It was a glassdoor in a restaurant in Denmark. Itwas closing on me, and I put myhand up to stop it and open it formyself and it just shattered. Theremay have been a crack in it some-where already.

DRW: How long willyou have the cast on?DZ: I can take thecast off to do little moves and sometherapy, but before I put a load onit, it has to be ten to twelve weeks.I will take the full amount of timebecause I want it to heal strong.

DRW: You are headingoff tomorrow to go to SanFrancisco?DZ: Yeah.

DRW: Are you goingto race in the Grand Prix?DZ: I am just goingto start and ride a lap. They can'tstart, the minimum they need tostart, is five guys.

DRW: That is the rea-son why you have to go. All right.Thank you for your time and for theinterview. Good luck, and we willbe hoping for great success for you.

We believe the August 2005article in Cycling Utah regardingTransportation Enhancement(TE) Funds was misleading.However, since the TE programis essentially citizen driven, weare pleased that Cycling Utah isinterested in educating its read-ers about this importantresource.

The article presented the UtahDepartment of Transportation asbeing unsupportive of trails pro-jects, and uncooperative andinefficient in the utilization ofthe enhancement funding avail-able. Nothing could be furtherfrom the truth. The data reportedin the August publication thatwas obtained from the informa-tion service, may or may not beaccurate; but it is more impor-tant to understand what thosenumbers mean rather than judgea program by the obligation rate

or to put some significance tothe number of projects pro-grammed by a state.

The unobligated balance inthe enhancement fund for Utahsimply indicates that the moneymade available through theenhancement program has notyet been spent. Utah has a veryactive enhancement programwith a primary focus on bicycleand pedestrian projects. Sincethe inception of the program100% of the funds availablehave been awarded to projectsponsors. This means that theproject sponsors, typically alocal government agency and/orbicycle advocacy group, hasbeen unable to complete workon the design and constructionof the project in a timely man-ner. The reasons for this lack ofperformance and thus the largeunobligated balance of funds arevaried and may include such

things as the inexperience of aproject sponsor; difficulty adher-ing to the federal-aid fundingrequirements; or securing thenecessary matching funds orproperty.

If our goal was to expend theenhancement funds as quickly aspossible and thus look good inregard to the obligation balance,the Utah Department ofTransportation could program allof these funds on projects thatthe state would select, design,and construct, thereby complet-ing virtually 100% of the pro-jects each year. Instead we havechosen to use an advisory com-

mittee to screen and select pro-ject applications submitted bylocal government and citizengroups, who then are responsiblefor the completion of their pro-posed projects. We are in theprocess of implementingchanges that will assist theseagencies and community groupsin completing their projects in atimelier manner.

Utah has programmed 80 pro-jects for over $28 million duringthe past 5 years. Bicycle-relatedprojects account for 60% ofthose projects, even though theyare only one of the twelve activi-ties eligible to receive funding.We believe keeping the publicand local government agenciesinvolved as partners in these pro-jects is the right thing to do andresults in a more effective pro-gram. The results have been dra-matic and have provided fundingfor more than 250 enhancement

projects in areas throughout thestate of Utah.

true. Dave and his pals have no trouble acquiring gear in Qatar, mostly

from ebay or European sources. For the Americans, shipping is quickand reliable through the military APO mail system. Others wait longerfor their new bike trinkets to arrive and pass through customs, but theyusually are delivered safely. The group is generally full of top level,newer bikes with the best components. He laughs that all the Americansare riding European bikes, and all the “Euros” are riding Americanbikes. Our ho-hum see-them-every-day brands are their hard to find andexpensive status bikes, and vice versa. And the same old, time honoredargument exists regarding Japanese versus Italian components, thecyclist's Ford/Chevy debate. And Dave is doing his part to spread thegospel of Tullio. Some products that are available only from Europe,and not available here in the States are gobbled up by the Americans,and hard to find or “classic” mountain bikes and parts from the U.S. arelikewise gobbled up and sent home by the Europeans. There is no needfor a mountain bike in Qatar. If it isn't paved, you need a camel orHummer to get anywhere in the desert sand.

Tour de France time is, predictably, an exciting time for the group,but Dave was interested to find that the Spring Classics hold almost thesame interest and excitement for the Europeans. It's almost like a week-ly Super Bowl for them, and a hot topic during the weekly rides. Severalof them take small breaks and travel to Europe to watch the Classics inperson, something Dave has done and plans to do more of. He says thatat Tour time, it's mostly the Americans talking, thanks to bragging rightsfor the past seven years. But he also tells me that our Tour champion isregarded as just that by every nationality represented. There's no talk ofdoping or cheating, just respect for a great Tour rider. And a bit of sourgrapes that he squashes all at the Tour.

Cycling is a great escape from the daily news of the region for all theriders in Dave's group. There's hardly talk of the conflict that broughtthem all there and employs them there. They talk about their daily jobsas we all do, if they can. And they share information that may save theirlives as they venture out in public. But they mostly talk about bikes,debate brands of gear and joke in that sometimes morbid way that onlyhumor allows one to get past danger, or illness or strife. Once again, aswe all see on our group rides here at home, and for Elvis's group inDoha, the bike shows its virtue by bringing folks together, making themhealthier, and providing enjoyment. Here's a tip of the hat, and a wishfor a safe and stiff tailwind.

It was a beautifully coolmorning that dawned for theCycle for Life Century inHuntsville this year. With 122riders taking on the variedroutes offered, the majoritytook on the challenge ofclimbing Trapper's Loop fromboth sides. The Cycle for LifeCentury is one of the toughestcenturies in the State with over1 mile of climbing, and twoawesome descents that alloweach cyclist to try for their per-sonal fastest speed if theychoose or a more modestdescent if they are a little morecautious.

Event coordinator GrantAagard, of Tailwind Tours,was quick to offer his gratitudeto all the riders and volunteersthat made the ride a success,raising almost $2,400 to bene-fit cyclist's injured bymotorists. One of most com-mented upon aspects of theride, aside from the beauty,was the fact that it was sched-uled on Sunday this yearwhich resulted in significantlyless traffic on the roads.Aagard was heard to say; “Itwon't be long, with the growthalong the Wasatch Front, thatmost all rides will be forced tobe held on Sundays for safe-ty”. Although one of thesmaller centuries around it isone of the most challengingand scenic.

JJ Clark (Stein Eriksen Sport),made a strong push on the last lapto narrow Jones' lead down to justover a minute.

The pro women's field was aslarge has it had been all seasonwith five racers. Lining up withthe expert men made the start fastand more interesting. KathySherwin (Biogen-Idec) situatedherself comfortably in the pack offthe start line and pulled awayfrom the other women in the firstfew minutes of the race and neverlooked back. Her lead grew tonearly ten minutes over secondplace finisher, Sue Abbene(Biogen-Idec). Abbene, whoupgraded to pro, locally andnationally, midway through theseason, also raced very strongly.

Being the last race of the sea-son, and double points for theindividual standings, this raceproved to be crucial for some thatwere chasing the overall title aswell as the team title. Some of theclasses overall titles came down tosingle points separating the topthree, and even a tie that wasdecided from past race results inthe season. There was a big battlefor the coveted team title as anumber of teams shared the topspot numerous times throughoutthe year. 50 extra points were upfor grabs for teams that volun-teered to do trail maintenance,which several of them took advan-tage of. This offer not only bene-fited the clubs, but also the many

of the trails we all enjoy. At theend of the day it was TeamRevolution that came out on top,edging out Mad Dog Cycles byonly 50 points.

Again, the city of Evanston,WY, along with Ed Chauner, PaulKnopf, and all of the volunteersmade this an incredible event. TheCity held the annual pizza, beerand awards ceremony after therace. As always, the best legscompetitions and the $50 prizemoney drew a crowd. Many greatprizes were raffled off from localshops around the Salt Lake Valleyas well as a winter gear from localski shops. This event is always agreat way to end a season.

I think I speak for everyonewho participates in the IMCSeries when I say thank you foranother great year. The race pro-moters really do an amazing job,and I can't imagine what theseries would be like without youguys.

It's a beautiful weekend day,you're riding along, on a lonelyblacktop, near the shoulder, andyou are startled by blast of a hornfrom a motorist as he passes you.You think to yourself, 'what aNeanderthal'.

It's a beautiful weekend day,you're riding along, on a lonelyblacktop, near the shoulder, theline of sight is over a mile, their isnot a car in sight, there are noturnouts, there is over twenty feetof available pavement, you are notzigzagging to avoid enemy torpe-does and you hear a startling'LEFT!' as a lean mean roadcyclist passes you by on a veryexpensive bicycle. You think toyourself, 'what a Neanderthal'.

I realize at times this is properprotocol like on a bike path withyoung families, rollerbladers,inliners, etc. but, I've never felt itnecessary when I pass an obviousskilled bike rider on a open road,or for that matter any of SLC'scanyon roads to yell to anotherrider I'm passing. I feel this pro-duces the opposite effect of asmooth steady ride now beinginterrupted by someone yellingbehind you.

Of course, I might not be theenlightened one. I ride on a fiveyear old Schwinn with a cotton T-shirt and tennis shoes and usuallycalmly say 'hello' when I passsomeone.

Nearly 200 racers wrapped uptheir season with the last race ofthe 2005 Intermountain CupSeries, Wolverine Ridge, onAugust 13 in the beautiful UintaMountains. The course was simi-lar to years past with the additionof about a dozen big water barsthroughout the large lap, and all ofthe downhill sections were dry,dusty and very soft.

Eleven pro men rode up to thestart line, and any number of themhad a chance of winning. Among

them was Revolution rider, BlakeZumbrunnen, who jumped off linehard and led the group down thegully and over the bridge. “It'sbeen awhile since I started thathard, I missed that feeling, so Idecided to peg it and see how longI could hold it,” commentedZumbrunnen. He stayed out frontand put the hurt on for nearly sixminutes, popping a few riders offthe back, before Eric Jones(Biogen-Idec) decided to take con-trol of the race - control that henever relinquished over the 28mile course.
