    Though Christmas

    couldnt be spent with

    our families, the divi-

    sions put up a great

    effort to make it feel

like home and bringsome Christmas cheer

    onboard the USS Hopper.

    Divisions had secret

    Santas and stocking

    stuffers. Families,

    schools, and churches

    sent an abundance of

    Christmas cards and

    cookies (which everyone

    has been working hard

    to burn off since).

    The competition was

    friendly and fun, and

    gave everyone a warm

    feeling that is much

    needed during the holi-

days away. The CO saidit best when he said

It is a great honor to

    serve your country dur-

    ing the holidays, and

    I think everyone can

    feel that sentiment.

    On Christmas

    Eve, 2009, the ships

    crew worked diligently

    to compete with each

    other in a Christmas

    Decorations competi-tion. Though we could

    not be home with our

    families, people still

    showed they were in the

    spirit of Christmas

    with decorations,

    Christmas music in the

    P-ways, hot chocolate

    and eggnog, letters

    from students, and some

    of the crew even

    dressed up as some of

    your favorite Christmas

    Characters.

    With an ice

    cream social, for the

winning division, onthe line, the competi-

    tion became fierce.

    Supply, coming in

    fourth place, had a se-

    vere advantage in the

    cookie department. De-

    signed to bribe the

    judges by harboring the

    only kitchen available,

    the cookies were a suc-

    cess. The CO said they

    were, Hands down, the

    best cookies in the

    competition. Unfortu-

    nately, cookies alone

    were not enough to win

    first place.

    Coming in third

    place was CC division.

    IC2 McClains sisters

    class provided them

    with a lot of Christmas

    cards. They obviously

    put some money in to

    make their P-way feel

    like you were driving

    around the neighborhood

    looking at Christmas

    lights with your fam-

    ily. They had a huge

    inflatable snowman that

    had gone missing, but

    resurfaced just in

    time.

CA division hada plethora of hand-made

    Christmas decorations.

    They had a nativity

    scene, a Christmas tree

    with edible decoration,

    candy cane icicles,

    candy filled snow balls

    and Christmas cards

    from a Sunday school

    class. STG3 Hall

    dressed up as Jack

    frost and ambushed the

    judges with a wintry

    blast of snow while

    STG3 Blomstrom waited

    downstairs as a Christ-

mas Elf to welcome themto the North Pole.

    STG2 Kester, as Mrs.

    Clause, then came out

    with hot chocolate and

    cookies to complete the

    North Pole experience.

    The most edible P-way

    earned them second

    place.

    In first place,

    however, R-Div put up a

    great fight. DCA

    dressed up as a snow-

    man, and DC2 Avery was

    a fire-fighting snow-

    man. Their P-way had a

    lot of Christmas lights

    and they had snacks for

    the judges as well.

    They had cookies, car-

    rots and milk avail-

    able. They also had

    letters for Santa for

    what each person in the

    division wanted includ-

    ing longer working

    hours and more drills.

    Thankfully, Santa did

    not bring these.

    Our Founding

    Fathers built our country on

life, liberty and the pursuitof happiness. To this day,our country still runs on that

    foundation. Yet, one

    question lingers in the mind,

    How far does that founda-

tion reach? Since our startwe have always waged wars

on our beliefs and desires to

    be independent, to be free

    thinking, and to be treated

    justly. We continually

defend our own soil andnow we find ourselves

    defending other countries

    soils. Our brothers and

sisters are on the ground in

Iraq and Afghanistanwaging the current wars.

    We fight for reasons that

appear to be for the better

good of our world and that

    will leave our own country

    safe. Yet, with each day

that our presence is evidentin the Middle East, cultural

    changes occur. Westerniza-

tion is in progress. Womenare becoming educated, are

being liberated; yet fastfood chains are infiltrating

    more developed areas of the

    Middle East and contribut-

    ing to the degrading health

    and obesity of those coun-

tries. Cultures are chang-ing for good and for bad.Culture, the definition of

what a country is. It is un-

    derstandable to protect our

    own interests and longevity

in the scheme of things, butto change otherswho are

we to do that? Who are we

to take away from the foun-

    dation that another country

is built on. We know from

our own history that it takesa lot for a country to liberate

itself and to stand up on its

own. So, why would we go

    above and beyond protect-

ing our own interests tochanging the foundation of

    another country? Is it right

for us to project our beliefs:

    religious, political, and/or

social, onto others? It is not

right for us to project and

change others cultures toprotect ourselves. We are

    ultimately robbing others of

their history and their futurefor those bad changes we

are making. But to protectourselves, we must leave a

    footprint on a country. This

    footprint is unintentional,

    but the change we make

appears to be a ripple now.

How big is the ripple goingto get? Theres no way totell, but we need to think of

    whether or not there are

    ways to protect ourselves

    and our interests without

    making large ripples,especially negative ripples.

Is it possible to leave only

the good and if not, do those

    in charge of the countries

    we are influencing under-

stand the possible repercus-sions that could occur from

    our influence? How do you

    weigh the good against the

bad? And if you think the

good is better than the bad, what if it turns out to be

    wrongis it recoverable?

    We must believe that these

    other countries are the mod-

    ern day images of our

    Founding Fathers, but for

their own countries, andtake the chance for the

    pursuit of life, liberty and

happiness for themselves. We can only do what we

have done throughout ourcountrys life; we can only

    look to protect our interests.

    We must trust that others

Stress is caused bythe body's instinct to

defend itself. Thisinstinct is good inemergencies, such asgetting out of the wayof a speeding car. Butit can cause physicalsymptoms if it goeson for too long suchas in response to life'sdaily challenges andchanges. When thishappens, it's as

though your body getsready to jump out ofthe way of the car,but you're sitting still.Your body is workingovertime, with noplace to put all theextra energy. This canmake you feelanxious, afraid, worried and uptight.

    Tips for dealing withstress

Don't worry aboutthings you can'tcontrol, like theweather.

Prepare to the best ofyour ability for eventsyou know may bestressful, like a jobinterview.

    Try to look at change

    as a positivechallenge, not athreat.

Work to resolve con-flicts with other peo-ple.

Ask for help fromfriends, family or pro-fessionals. Set realis-

    "tattoo, and be-

    came utilized to

    describe the next

    to the last bugle

    call for the

    night.

    Gold Ear Ring

    Not a nautical

    term but a pieceof nautical

    knowledge: In

    case a sailor was

    lost at sea, he

    wore a golden ear

    ring to compen-

    sate the finder

    of his body for

    giving him a

    Tattoo - During

    the days of

    walled cities,

    tavern keepers

    would say "tap

    toe" when the

    town bugler

    sounded the call

    for everyone to

    return to theirquarters for the

    night. It meant,

    "The tap", or

    bar, is "to" (To

    be closed). To

    soldiers

    stationed near

    the cities, it

    sounded like,

    Christian burial

    and having a

    priest pray over

    his grave

    Stateroom-

    Derived from U.S.

    paddlewheel

    riverboats, in

    the 1800s first-class cabins were

    named after

    various states in

    New York,

    Virginia,

    Pennsylvania)

    hence the name

    V OL U ME 1 0 , I S S UE 1 P a g e 9

    I know that many

    people have tradi-

    tions regarding the

    holidays. In my

    past, that is from

    as far back as I

    can remember, the

    biggest traditions

    regarding the new

    year have been

    watching a ball

    drop, kissing some-

    one close to me at

    the stroke of mid-

    night, and writing

    a resolution for

the new year. Itwasnt until decid-

    ing what to write

    about that I ever

    thought of where

    these traditions

    came from. What I

    found was rather

    fascinating to me

    and I would like to

    share it with you.

    The tradition

    of celebrating the

    New Year, on Janu-

    ary first, can be

    dated back to 153

    B.C. The ancient

    Romans had a mythi-

    cal two faced king

    named Janus. Janus

    could simultane-

    ously look back at

    the year that

    passed and into the

    year on coming,

    thus becoming the

    symbol for resolu-

    tion.

    The ball in

    New York City was

    created in 1907. It

    was put in place to

    create attention to

    the second biggest

    building, during

    that time. The

    building was home

    to the New York

    Times. Owner Adolph

    Ochs wanted to draw

    attention to his

    celebration partyfor the New Year.

    When the headquar-

    ters of the paper

    was move to Time

    Square in 1914 the

    parties continued

    annually and the

    ball was recon-

    structed in 1920.

    Since then the only

    time the ball has

    not dropped was

    during WWII and a

    moment of silence

    was observed in its

    place.

    The kiss at

    midnight started

    with masked balls.

    The mask itself

    represented the

    evil spirits or

    wrongs of the year.

    The kiss symbolizes

    purification from

    said evil spirits

    into the New Year.

    The making of

    a resolution actu-

    ally comes from Ju-

    daism. It is part

    of a holiday called

    Rosh Hashanah. The

    purpose of a reso-

    lution, in this

    holiday, to reflect

    upon one's wrongdo-

    ings over the year

    and both seek and

    offer forgiveness.

    Today the NewYears resolution

    is a commitment

    made to oneself to

    change for the bet-

    ter.

    Other tradi-

    tions that I have

    found include but

    are not limited to:

    Eating 12 grapes

    one for each month

    of the year with

    the bell stroke at

    midnight. Eating of

    lasagna as the only

    type of pastas con-

    sidered good luck.

    At the first toll

    of midnight, the

    back door is opened

    and then shut to

    release the old

    year and lock out

    all of its bad

Heres To a New Year Written by STG3 Hall

    luck. Then at the

    twelfth stroke of

    the clock, the

    front door is

    opened and the New

    Year is welcomed

    with all of its

    luck. For the Chi-

    nese New Year,

    every front door is

    adorned with a

    fresh coat of red

    paint, red being a

    symbol of good luck

    and happiness. Al-

    though the whole

family prepares afeast for the New

    Year, all knives

    are put away for 24

    hours to keep any-

    one from cutting

    themselves, which

    is thought to cut

    the family's good

    luck for the next

    year

    No this does-

    nt mean that we

    should paint the

    doors red and not

    use knives, refuse

    to eat anything but

    lasagna and grapes,

or put on a mask to

    get away with kiss-

    ing people.

    PICTURE CAPTION CONTEST

    13. Recycling.

    Not the general con-

    cept of recycling,

    just the system we

    use. I dont want to

    sort my trash, its

    trash, I threw it

    out for a reason. We

    spend too much money

    on recycling centers

    for it to even be

    worthwhile. They

    should just hire

people to sort outall the trash and

    break what can be

    reused back down to

    raw material. Then

    start converting

    dumps into recycling

    centers, not the

    other way around.

    This way it stimu-

    lates the economy by

    creating jobs in-

    stead of investing

way too much of ourmoney into something

    that isnt paying

    any dividends. I

    think its time they

    put me in charge of

    everything.

    14. The space pro-

    gram. Whatever hap-

    11. Using indiffer-

    ence as an excuse to

    be lazy. If you

    really care so lit-

    tle, than whats

    stopping you from

    just getting what-

    ever it happens to

    be done and over

    with? You obviously

    dont have anything

    better to do or

    wouldnt be com-

    plaining about how

    much you dont care.

You would be work-ing, so get to it.

    12. Ants. Ants annoy

    me, whether its the

    red ones, brown

    ones, black ones,

    just ants in gen-

    eral. Im pretty

    sure that if ants

    went extinct, it

    wouldnt really have

    that big of an im-

    pact on the ecosys-

    tem. I believe we

    have enough other

    little bugs in the

    ground to make up

    for all the scaveng-

    ing. You know, the

    ones that dont bite

    the hell out of you.

    pened to that thing?

    I strongly support

    giving those guys a

    bigger budget. Were-

    nt we supposed to

    have people on Mars

    by now? A few condos

    on the Moon or some-

    thing? Ever hear of

    Helium 3? Google it,

    we seriously need to

    gut the Moon and get

    our hands on that

    stuff. Besides,well wish we had

    some space travel

    available when that

    Large Hadron Col-

    lider finally jump

    starts a big bang

    and destroys the

    world.

    15. Overly critical

    people. You know

    those people who

just have so much tosay about everything

    they dont agree

    with, everything

    they think is wrong,

    and how they could

    do a better job?

    Yeah they got plenty

    JANUARY 2010 H OROSCOP ESBy IT2 F iorel lo

AriesSlow StartThe year seems to start off in reverse as you experience sudden stops and serious demands on your time. The emphasis is on

your professional life now, the Chiefs exam may present itself when other things are going on like your liberty.

TaurusCautious Optimism*You find meaning in life from instinct rather than intellect this month, as you are able to find answers with your feelings

rather than your head. Using Google never hurt either, if your computer isnt rebooting.

    Gemini

The Waiting Game2010 seems to start off on the wrong foot with pleasure becoming more and more elusive. Luckily there is a port visit soon to

assist you in putting your best foot forward.

lenge your traditional values should not be dismissed unless it involves moving midrats ahead 3 hours.

    Leo

Ready, Aim, Don't FirePowerful forces restrain your creative self-expression this month as work-related issues are emphasized. Managing your anger

can be crucial to your happiness now, cause the Christmas bills are gonna keep pouring in.

and beauty are emphasized shortly before you transfer out on Desert Hawk!

nearly impossible to make progress toward your long-term goals right now, such as becoming more Like A Chief!ScorpioMaster of Your Destiny

On the down side, mixed messages and difficulty with details are likely to arise this month, could be due to profile issuescausing your email not to work.

    Sagittarius

Paying the PriceYou have big plans for the year, yet January seems to start off in slow motion. Instead of looking out toward the distant hori-

zon, growth and meaning may come closer to home. While order negotiation may be at the forefront, facing these issues in-

creases your self-esteem to boost your confidence on your journey toward your long-term dreams.

CapricornDrop Your AnchorsThere's an urge to bring more romance and creativity into your life, and you can happily find a fresh path to guide you now.Accepting and letting go of your past aspirations helps you clean the slate and plant the seeds for new goals to work toward

so dont stress much about not making board.

    Aquarius

Back to Square OneEager as you are for this new year, there are still relationship issues left over from the past that must be addressed. The more

you attempt to push past your current circles of A, B, C, and D, the more frustrated you might become. Just remember when

    in doubt, Charlie out.

PiscesExpanding Your UniverseWhile January seems to start off with things moving in reverse, this month also brings wisdom, optimism and good fortune to

ignite your entrepreneurial spirit. Keep in mind not all things bought over seas can be sold in America!
