Calvary is a congregation of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod January 2017 Volume 21, Issue 1 Pastor’s Column Happy “secular” New Year! As you may remember, the last column I had the chance to write came at the beginning of the Church’s “New Year” which began with the first Sunday of the Advent season. But now the world has caught up to us, calendars have turned another page, and a new year stands before us with all the usual promise and apprehension that attend the things of this world. Thankfully we know that no matter what may happen in the world, our country, our homes, or even our own lives, Christ remains the same, yesterday, today, and always! And as we start a new year together as a congre- gation, I want to use this column to revisit some of my remarks at the December 11 th , 2016 Voters’ Meeting. Those of you who are veterans of Vot- ers’ Meetings know that I am called upon to give a “State of the Congregation” report – which is something of a cross between a pep-talk and a realistic assessment of where the congregation stands from a pastoral perspective. As you might guess, this is not a task I particularly relish, but we all carry on. Now, in terms of the positives, I was happy to highlight our 17 families with students at Concor- dia Lutheran School (26 students have support from Mt. Calvary). What is exciting about this is that three of those families are new to Mt. Calva- ry, and have involved catechizing five adults bap- tizing four children (three are done, and one is still waiting). And this is not an aberration this year – similar stories can be told over the past few years – for 11 out of our 17 families have come to Mt. Calvary from either non-Lutheran or non- churched backgrounds. So this is a true “mission” outreach of the congregation, and worth celebrat- ing. God is good! I also was able to point to our Food Pantry (give a hearty round of appreciation to LaVelle Borders and her sturdy crew of volunteers) as an im- portant aspect of the service we offer to our area. And we can take pleasure in the blessing that worship continues to be, along with the excellent music program Bruce Tagge is able to offer (wasn’t the music on Christmas Eve fantastic?). But now we need to look at where we have to be more diligent as a congregation. One of the things that is not obvious as we gather our group across three different services (the two on Sunday, and the Thursday service) is that we have a significant group of younger families. In terms of numbers, half of our active membership is now under 50 years old, and some well-under that. The chal- lenge, as this generational shift occurs, is how to harness this change to effectively live out our call- ing as a congregation. One area in which we can improve is participa- tion. We have left behind a culture, some 40 years ago now, in which the church organized families’ calendars. Now there are many other activities that compete for a family’s time and energy. But we can’t let the fellowship here be neglected. Worship and the study of God’s Word are non- negotiables in the Christian life – for all ages. So, starting with yourself and your circle of family (Pastor’s Column connued on page 2)

Pastorrsquos Column

Happy ldquosecularrdquo New Year As you may remember the last column I

had the chance to write came at the beginning of the Churchrsquos ldquoNew Yearrdquo which began with the first Sunday of the Advent season But now the world has caught up to us calendars have turned another page and a new year stands before us with all the usual promise and apprehension that attend the things of this world Thankfully we know that no matter what may happen in the world our country our homes or even our own lives Christ remains the same yesterday today and always

And as we start a new year together as a congre-gation I want to use this column to revisit some of my remarks at the December 11th 2016 Votersrsquo Meeting Those of you who are veterans of Vot-ersrsquo Meetings know that I am called upon to give a ldquoState of the Congregationrdquo report ndash which is something of a cross between a pep-talk and a realistic assessment of where the congregation stands from a pastoral perspective As you might guess this is not a task I particularly relish but we all carry on

Now in terms of the positives I was happy to highlight our 17 families with students at Concor-dia Lutheran School (26 students have support from Mt Calvary) What is exciting about this is that three of those families are new to Mt Calva-ry and have involved catechizing five adults bap-tizing four children (three are done and one is still waiting) And this is not an aberration this

year ndash similar stories can be told over the past few years ndash for 11 out of our 17 families have come to Mt Calvary from either non-Lutheran or non-churched backgrounds So this is a true ldquomissionrdquo outreach of the congregation and worth celebrat-ing God is good

I also was able to point to our Food Pantry (give a hearty round of appreciation to LaVelle Borders and her sturdy crew of volunteers) as an im-portant aspect of the service we offer to our area And we can take pleasure in the blessing that worship continues to be along with the excellent music program Bruce Tagge is able to offer (wasnrsquot the music on Christmas Eve fantastic)

But now we need to look at where we have to be more diligent as a congregation One of the things that is not obvious as we gather our group across three different services (the two on Sunday and the Thursday service) is that we have a significant group of younger families In terms of numbers half of our active membership is now under 50 years old and some well-under that The chal-lenge as this generational shift occurs is how to harness this change to effectively live out our call-ing as a congregation

One area in which we can improve is participa-tion We have left behind a culture some 40 years ago now in which the church organized familiesrsquo calendars Now there are many other activities that compete for a familyrsquos time and energy But we canrsquot let the fellowship here be neglected Worship and the study of Godrsquos Word are non- negotiables in the Christian life ndash for all ages So starting with yourself and your circle of family

(Pastorrsquos Column continued on page 2)

and friends ask whether you all could be partici-pating more regularly And then drag yourselves here ndash encourage invite There are so many gifts to receive in the fellowship of the church but you have to be here to enjoy them

Another type of participation that we need to im-prove is participation in the maintenance of the congregation ndash not in reference to the physical up-keep of the building but with regards to the func-tioning of the congregation as a human organiza-tion Come to the Votersrsquo Meetings Read the re-ports Stay plugged in to what is or isnrsquot happen-ing at church I know some of you reading this arenrsquot familiar with how the work of the church gets done but nowrsquos the time to become familiar with that Council meetings Boards budgets planning giving committees volunteering ndash there is much for you to do The Board of Long Range Planning is going to put together a pam-phlet of their recommendations from the last two years and hope to have it in your hands by the end of the month In it you will find areas where you might be the person to help or you might know of the right person But we need you all In a very real sense what this congregation will be and do is up to you

Finally many of you have heard of the financial pressures we are facing We have adopted a plan for 2017 that should get us through the year but without improving our income some hard choic-es will have to be made for 2018 And by that we mean looking at support for Concordia looking at what we give to Missions and looking at staffing The numbers basically tell us that giving (from regular offerings) was only 80 of our expenses this last year Now we were able to largely offset that with the moneys that came from the Perpetu-al Endowment ndash but it didnrsquot cover everything and our checking account now functions on a week to week basis in terms of paying our bills As you can understand this is not how we want to continue The simple solution would be to have everyone increase their current giving by 25 - but I know our household canrsquot do that and I sus-pect yours canrsquot as well So if we want to contin-ue with the current level of ministry and service we offer we have to find ways to improve our

(Pastorrsquos Column continued from page 1) income and ask that you prayerfully consider how you can help So thatrsquos a review of the highlights from the Vot-errsquos Meeting I hope that you will sense the chal-lenges ahead of us and join with the rest of your brothers and sisters here to meet them with the confidence that God is at work in this place to build up the Body of Christ and that He will con-tinue to use us to bring His light into many plac-es Yours in Christ

PRIVATE CONFESSION Pastor Long will be available by appointment and between 1 and 2 pm on the Saturdays before ser-vices of Holy Communion for private confes-sion Come in through the front door and find him in his office or the sanctuary Confessions are sealed by a vow of absolute confi-dentiality and all ministers of the Gospel in the Lutheran Church are sworn to suffer harm rather than ever reveal anything brought to them in pri-vate confession Questions Please speak with Pastor Long

THANK YOU A huge thank you to all those who helped put the Sunday School childrenrsquos presentation together on Sunday December 18th and to all the children who took part in that presentation Well done

and friends ask whether you all could be partici-pating more regularly And then drag yourselves here ndash encourage invite There are so many gifts to receive in the fellowship of the church but you have to be here to enjoy them

Adult Class ndash ldquoCalled to Vote On hiatus until January 8 2017 Wersquore a little late on this but therersquos still time to consider our vocations as vot-ers coming up to the November elections This four part study by Prof Ken Schurb is not a ldquovotersrsquo guiderdquo as much as it is an examination of how we as Christians can faithfully use the priv-ilege of voting to serve our neighbor

Wednesday

the Parish Hall Thursday

Afternoon Bible Study Leviticus On hiatus until January 12 2017 Far from being a handbook for priests or manual on holiness the book of Leviticus gives a power-ful witness to how the Holy God gives His peo-ple access to His grace and blessing Join us as we journey through an unfamiliar world to find its wisdom for our own day Turns out the same God still comes to us as we gather for worship We meet at 100 pm in the Parish Hall

Christian Education at Mt Calvary

Sunday

YOUTH Sunday School Age 3 through Grade 8 meet downstairs Will not

meet on January 1 2017 During January we will learn how Jesus called his disciples and also how he healed many people ADULTS

Wednesday

Menrsquos Bible Study Job Why do even the faithful suffer in this world Come and explore the book of Job with us Wednesday mornings as we learn the mystery of Godrsquos work and will even in the midst of hard-ship We meet at the IHOP on Big Hollow Rd

(across from Target) Wednesdays at 630 am Wednesday Evening Bible Study Galatians On Hiatus until January 11 2017 Join us as we sprint through Paulrsquos Letter to the Galatians Ever wonder where Lutherans came up with all this ldquoLaw-Gospelrdquo stuff or wonder why wersquore so insistent that justification by faith is absolutely essential foa a proper understanding of Christ and His work Itrsquos all here Turns out St Paul was a LutheranhellipWe meet at 630 pm in

the Parish Hall Thursday

Afternoon Bible Study Leviticus On hiatus until January 12 2017 Far from being a handbook for priests or manual on holiness the book of Leviticus gives a power-ful witness to how the Holy God gives His peo-ple access to His grace and blessing Join us as we journey through an unfamiliar world to find its wisdom for our own day Turns out the same God still comes to us as we gather for worship We meet at 100 pm in the Parish Hall
