Roy Brown Jr., chief stylist responsible for design of the 1958 and 1959 Edsel, passed away on February 24 in Michigan at the age

of 96 . Forever associated with what he once called “Ford’s most successful failure”, Brown would become the last surviving senior

-level executive of Ford Motor Company involved with the Edsel project and would remain a staunch supporter of the car until the

end of his life, having owned and driven a 1958 Edsel Pacer convertible until 1990 when he gave it to his son Reg.

Roy was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on October 30, 1916. His father, a Chrysler engineer, moved the family to the Detroit

area when he was a teenager. Upon graduation from the Detroit Art Academy, Roy began his design career at age 20 with General

Above: 1955 Lincoln Futura concept

car was Roy’s first assignment at Ford.

and column used in the “Batmobile”.

Below: George Barris transformed the

Futura into the Batmobile in 1965.

Full-size clay prototype Roy unveiled to Ford’s Executive Committee

in August 1955, wearing a new color of paint in this circa 1956 photo.

Following his work on the Futura, Brown was named chief stylist for a

project code named the “E-Car” in 1954, later to become part of “Special

Products Division” in 1955. Roy and his design team were given a clean

slate with regards to the appearance of the new vehicle so long as basic

sheet metal remained interchangeable with its Ford and Mercury cousins.

As quoted in the September 1957 issue of Your Edsel Marketer, Roy said,

“We set out to style a car, that without any other identification, could be

recognized instantly”. Bucking the trend for wide, low horizontal front

grilles and vertical tailfins currently in vogue, his design team proposed a

vertical front grille theme with a horizontal, gull-wing tail light treatment

on the rear. Upper management bought it and Roy was given the green

light to proceed. As for the interior design, Roy’s team developed charts

on reachability that resulted in the transmission’s electric tele-touch shift

buttons located in the center of the steering wheel, use of toggle switches

on the dash and contour seats. Roy proudly believed his team was ahead

of the times in their application of “ergonomics” to the new car’s design.

In August 1955 when Brown unveiled a full-sized clay convertible proto-

type of the E-car painted white with turquoise trim to Ford’s executive

planning committee, the group stood up and wildly applauded its new

design. Sadly, the buying public would not be as kind two years later.

While other chapters of the Edsel saga would play out in management

offices throughout Dearborn, Roy and his design team lumbered on. De-

sign work for the 1958 model was essentially complete by Spring 1956

with the exception of trim work that would bear the car’s name. With

less than a year before scheduled production to begin, the issue of naming

Ford’s new car had now reached critical state.

Roy Brown (Continued from Page 2)

Initially, the design team favored the name “Ventura” for the new car and used it on many

early renderings and clay prototypes. Months of speculation would end when Roy received a

phone call informing him the Executive Committee, chaired by Executive Vice-President

Ernest Breech, had unanimously voted to name the car “Edsel”. The selection was a disap-

pointment to many on the team. Later, on November 19, 1956, the general public would

learn Ford’s new entry into the medium-priced field of automobiles would be called the Edsel

and the Special Products Division responsible for its development had now become Ford’s

new Edsel Division.

Roy’s team had completed designs for the 1959 junior and senior series Edsel in the spring of

1957 and had begun design work for the 1960 Edsel, well before the first Edsel had been

sold. Although the Edsel’s September 4th public introduction generated huge traffic in show-

rooms across America and Canada, sales expectations for the Edsel never materialized. By

the end of December 1957, with over four months production of unsold 1958 Corsairs and

Citations on hand, Ford’s Executive Committee voted to merge the Edsel Division with Lin-

coln-Mercury to form the M-E-L Division. To further cut losses, production of the larger

Mercury-based Corsair and Citation cars, the distinctive, ergonomically designed Edsel dash

with rotating drum speedometer, and the teletouch transmission control would be scrapped.

Faced with the demoralizing task of relegating their creation to nothing more than a modified

1959 Ford while maintaining an “Edsel” identity for the car, Roy’s team would need to com-

plete these design modifications on an accelerated schedule to meet the September 23, 1958

date set for regular production of the 1959 Edsel to begin.

As rumors that the Edsel would be discontinued circulated within Ford, many in management

blamed its radical design as the culprit. For his part, Roy was exiled to Ford of England in

1959 to set up a design office in Europe. A series of design successes beginning with the

English Ford Cortina secured his return to Dearborn five years later. He supervised design

work on Econoline vans and Thunderbirds before retiring in 1975.

Following his retirement, Roy supported the various Edsel clubs, serving as guest speaker at

numerous national rallies and participating in the “Edsels in Las Vegas” events. He was an

excellent speaker. His oratory and visual presentation of the Edsel’s development from the

designer’s earliest renderings to full-size clay prototypes, some that made it to regular pro-

duction and many that did not, would leave crowded rally banquet halls so silent you could

hear a pin drop. Those who had the good fortune to meet Roy and hear his presentation at the

1972 IEC meet in Louisville, the 1987 EOC meet in Anaheim, or the 1994 combined IEC/

EOC meet in Dayton or to talk with him at the 2007 combined IEC/EOC/TEC Fiftieth Anni-

versary Meet in Dearborn will never forget the kind gentleman always eager to sign

banquet programs, pose for photographs, and promote the Edsel’s elegant styling.

So long for now Roy ... we will miss you. Bruce Dean, President

International Edsel Club

Views of a full-size clay prototype for the 1959 Citation

4 door hardtop based on the larger 1959 Mercury chas-

sis. Production was scrapped in December 1957 by

Ford’s Executive Committee following poor sales of the

1958 senior series Corsairs & Citations. During his

1994 rally presentation, Roy showed a photo of a 1959

Edsel with the proposed one-piece tail light lens origi-

nally designed for the car, saying if he owned a ‘59,

he’d have a set of these tail lights custom-made for it.

To cut production costs, round 1958 Lincoln tail light &

back-up lenses, set in chrome pods fashioned in the

shape of these lenses, were used for regular production.
