Olney unites for first local Relay for Life eventBY MINDI KIMBRO

[email protected]

The rst-ever Relay for Life event in Olney drew a huge crowd of teams and residents to Cub Stadium on Friday, April 27.

According to Dr. Jeremy Johnson, who co-chaired the event along with his wife, Trina, more than 400 people were present at the track to enjoy the festivities at one time during the night of activities.

“It was just a variety of emotions,” Johnson said of the evening, which brings to-gether survivors, caretakers and family members of those who have lost the ght with cancer to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The evening kicked off with an opening ceremony featuring comments from

Debbie Walton, the area ACS representative. She rst com-mended everyone for a job well done on fundraising. At

the start of the night efforts totaled more than $60,000, and activities and drawings held by attending teams on

Friday evening raised an ad-ditional $13,000. By the end of the night the total amount had increased to $73,882.

“For a community this size, that is amazing,” Walton said.

Survivors, caretakers honoredBY MINDI KIMBRO

Olney has been hit particu-larly hard by cancer in the past, and has lost a large num-ber of residents to different forms of the disease. That is one of the many reasons why some of the most emotional parts of the entire Relay for Life event this past weekend occurred in the opening cer-emony when cancer survivors and their caretakers took to

the track to make special laps. All caretakers and survivors

were invited to register for the event, and were treated to a private meal on Tuesday, April 24, before participating in the festivities on Friday night.

Cancer survivors, almost all dressed in special purple shirts signifying their status, took the rst lap together in a show of solidarity, and many expressed their joy at being able to participate in such

an event.“It gives me hope,” said sur-

vivor Linda Barrier, a breast cancer survivor who took the opening lap with the support of her sister, Susanne Nier. “I really feel there will be a cure for cancer. I’ve survived 20 years and I’m going to survive another 30.”

Another breast cancer sur-vivor, Nita Hearne, echoed those sentiments. She has

been cancer free for four years.

“It shows a lot of community support,” Hearne said of the event and the large crowd it drew. “It’s neat to see all the other survivors out - some you didn’t even know were survivors!”

After the survivors’ lap, they were joined on the track by caregivers who had sup-ported them and others who had passed on for another emotional lap.

One caregiver who took the lap was Carla Perry, whose husband, L.F. Perry, beat prostate cancer many years ago.

“(This event) means that it is possible, and I hope in the near future, that we’ll have a cure. This many people just brings it out in the open more.”

Perry related her experi-ences as a caretaker on many levels, beginning 20 or more years ago with her status as a wife who simply urged her husband to get examined once his PSA test levels began to show an increase.

Once L.F. was diagnosed, Perry said her role shifted

Stadium is hushed for solemn Luminaria CeremonyThe most solemn part of the

entire Relay for Life event was the Luminaria Ceremony, which was held after dark on Friday night.

In complete silence, a group of “Hush Angels” and Pipe Major Robert G. Richardson began a quiet lap around

the track before the lights at Cub Stadium were turned out. Richardson performed “Amazing Grace” during a lap around the track prior to a slide show presentation honoring those who have passed away, as well as cancer survivors and caregivers.

SHHHH! – “Hush Angels” who quieted the crowd in-cluded Clay Fite, Alli Flem-ing, Austen Fleming, Carter Hinson, Ellie Hinson, Coo-per Lane and Chloe Neal.

AMAZING GRACE – (Left) Pipe Major Robert G. Richardson traveled sev-eral hours to be in Olney for the Relay for Life on Friday, and performed a moving rendition of “Amazing Grace” to kick off the Lu-minaria Ceremony. (Right) During the ceremony, the luminarias dedicated to survivors, caregivers and those who have passed were lit from within.

For the Fleming Fighters, the choice to participate was personal. Accordingto Keeley Rollings, team captain, the participants signed up to help due to one individual.
